Angels have fascinated human consciousness since the beginning of time. The word angel derives from the Greek angelos, which is the default translation of the Biblical Hebrew term mal'ākh (literally “messenger”). The angel is a messenger between God and mankind. Whether we talk about angels, daimons, djinns, fairies, or any other of such beings, they all hold something in common, despite their difference in appearance, namely, they are all archetypal images of the same fundamental pattern, the archetype of the ethereal being. These spirits coexist with us; they just exist at another level of reality. As the archetypal image of the call, the angel initiates individuation, the journey towards wholeness of personality (the Self), as well theosis (union with God). Therefore, angels can help us both psychologically and spiritually. The integration of the angel archetype allows us to examine the nature of our essence or soul, the uniqueness that asks to be lived in each of us, and that unfolds itself during our lifetime. Thus, angels carry our true vocation, which is a calling, towards the meaning of our life. ☕ Donate a coffee ⭐ Support on Patreon ━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ⌛ Timestamps (0:00) Introduction (2:22) Angels in Zoroastrianism (3:33) Ba-soul, Genius, Daimon (6:25) The Transmigration of Souls and Reincarnation (8:10) Djinns, Fairies, Elementals (9:10) The Archetype of The Ethereal Being (9:50) Subtle bodies (10:18) The Role of Angels in the Creation of Evil (12:42) The Purpose and Motivation of Angels (14:35) The Anthropos (Primeval Man) (15:24) The Celestial Hierarchy: First Choir (17:20) The Celestial Hierarchy: Second Choir (17:53) The Celestial Hierarchy: Third Choir (20:40) Swedenborg and Blake (22:12) The Psychology of Angels (27:23) The Angel of Death (27:55) The Angel's Call (30:16) Angels: Individuation and Theosis (32:58) Angels and The Numinous (34:13) The Invocation of Angels (36:08) Angels and Dreams (37:05) Jacob's Ladder and Soul Geography (38:38) Wrestling with The Angel (40:40) The Integration of The Angel Archetype (42:16) Conclusion

We chat about how and why certain themes work their way into our writing as well as the joys of flash fiction as a form of storytelling. Stories include dreams that are more than they seem; Satan, transmigrated into a turkey; the chains of daily life (and the freedom that becomes those chains); and a girl searching for her lost friend. You can listen to Tee Zee's podcast, Flash Fiction in Five, here.  His blog, Roads Less Traveled, will include this week's story in print form. From Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable: Transmigration of souls. An ancient belief concerning the transition of the soul after death to another body or substance, usually human or animal, also known as metempsychosis. BRAHMANS and Buddhists accept human descent into plants as well as animals, and the BUDDHA underwent 550 births in different forms. The ancient Egyptians held to a form of transmigration in which the soul could inhabit another form to allow temporary revisiting the earth. See also PYTHAGORAS. Stories begin around the 16:15 mark. New Naratif's Southeast Asia Dispatches

On this episode, Bonnibel Rambatan talks about New Naratif's Research Department and the idea of research as activism with Lengga Pradipta, Migration Researcher at New Naratif. Migration research is an evergreen field of study that has only grown in its breadth of topics and range of micro-disciplines. In line with our approach of research as activism, that by conducting and publishing research that draws attention to such systematic failures of countries, and the consequent price that individual communities and people have to unjustly pay for, that we will embody the metaphorical butterfly whose flapping wings causes a cascading effect, changing people's attitudes and raising their awareness until this eventually manifests as the healing winds in a reformatory hurricane of social change, whether this is done through highlighting the environmental degradation resulting from reckless policies, the heartbreaking circumstances that lead Indonesian women to seek to migrate, or the self-destructive ways through which governments can actively encourage their people to desire being exploited. In this interview, Lengga talks about: - The history of migration programs in Indonesia. - How did the government persuade people to migrate? How did it play out? - Transmigration's major effects on the environment - The myth of national development and the new capital city of Indonesia - The romanticism of development and national progress in the face of global competition, as if natural resources are infinite - How people can see the relationship between migration and environmental degradation?

The question itself is deeply human and has a way of penetrating time, culture, income-level, place, and way of life that very few others can. In this special extended episode in our Answers series, we're exploring what different religions believe about the afterlife and, in particular, how these different traditions conceive of the postmortal reality known as "hell," "hades," or "naraka." By listening to this episode, we hope that you will discover a newfound interest in and appreciation for both the similarities and differences within and between these great religious streams.Did you know that Answers is also a YouTube series? Synopsis On today's date in 2002, just a little over one year after two passenger jetliners had crashed into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, the New York Philharmonic gave the premiere performance of a new work by the American composer John Adams. Entitled “On the Transmigration of Souls,” this high-profile commission sought to address a nation still in shock and grief at the terrorist attack of September 11, 2001. "I realized right up front that the public didn't need any more reiteration of the narrative of that day,” Adams said in an interview. “Certainly it didn't need some tasteless dramatization of the events… If I was going to do something meaningful, I was going to have to go in the opposite direction." Adams chose to set some of the words scribbled on posters plastered around Ground Zero by families searching for their loved ones. "They were a mixture of hope and a slowly dimming acceptance of reality," Adams said. “When people are deeply in shock… they don't express themselves in fancy language… they speak in the most simple of terms." Adams said he hoped his new piece would provide "memory space,” a musical work that could be at once a platform for either communal or personal reflection. Karma is a word most of us are familiar with, but its roots are much deeper than you might suspect. Three religions, Buddhism, Hinduism, and Jainism, all have nuanced views of karma that make it difficult to create a universal definition, but they all share the idea that one's actions have real consequences that can be good or bad.

The Bhagavad-gita is universally renowned as the jewel of India's spiritual wisdom. Spoken by Lord Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead to His intimate disciple Arjuna, the Gita's seven hundred concise verses provide a definitive guide to the science of self realization. No other philosophical or religious work reveals, in such a lucid and profound way, the nature of consciousness, the self, the universe and the Supreme. His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada is uniquely qualified to present this English translation and commentary on Bhagavad-gita. He is the world's foremost Vedic scholar and teacher, and he is also the current representative of an unbroken chain of fully self-realized spiritual masters begining with Lord Krishna Himself. Thus, unlike other editions of the Gita, this one is presented as it is--without the slightest taint of adulteration or personal motivation. This edition is certain to stimulate and enlighten with its ancient yet thoroughly timely message | find links where to read: sravanamdiaries.com/bhagavad-gita-as-it-is/

Maren Montalbano began her vocal career with the San Francisco Girls Chorus at age seven, and has been singing ever since. A graduate of both New England Conservatory of Music and Tufts University, Ms. Montalbano can be heard in three GRAMMY Award-winning albums: John Adams' Pulitzer Prize-winning work, On the Transmigration of Souls (2005), and Gavin Bryars' The Fifth Century (2018), and Lansing McLoskey's Zealot Canticles (2019), on which she is a featured soloist. She recorded Douglas Cuomo's opera Arjuna's Dilemma with Anonymous 4 members Susan Hellauer and Jacqueline Horner, which was released in 2008 to critical acclaim.  She appears on over a dozen commercial recordings, including Alice Parker's Listen Lord and The Family Reunion, Kile Smith's Vespers, Lewis Spratlan's Hesperus is Phosphorus, and Ted Hearne's Sound from the Bench. In the past five years, Ms. Montalbano has been a guest artist with Lyric Fest, Choral Arts Philadelphia, Network for New Music and Piffaro, the Renaissance Band. When she performed the modern premiere of Destinos vencen finezas, a 17th century zarzuela by Juan Francisco de Navas, with Philadelphia's Baroque orchestra, Tempesta di Mare, her dramatic interpretation was hailed as “pure, suave and sensuous” (Philadelphia Inquirer, March 2015). When she premiered the role of Andy Warhol #2 in Andy: a POPera (Bearded Ladies Cabaret and Opera Philadelphia), the Broad Street Review called her singing “impeccable.” Her debut album, Sea Tangle: Songs from the North, featuring all women composers and performers, was released in December 2016. During the pandemic of 2020-21, Ms. Montalbano turned to the digital world. She wrote, produced, and starred in an interactive digital one-woman show called The Bodice Ripper Project, which had its world premiere at the Philadelphia Fringe Festival, and she started a podcast of the same name. Other pandemic world premiere projects include David Lang's in nature (The Crossing/Warren Miller Performing Arts Center), Pete Wyer's Spring Street Opera (American Opera Projects), and the release of six different commercial albums with various collaborators. The 2021-22 season features Ms. Montalbano in more world premieres, both live and digital, from a podcast musical by Jennifer Rosenfeld to a work by Lansing McLoskey honoring the 100th anniversary of James Joyce's Ulysses. Ms. Montalbano lives in New Jersey and sings professionally throughout a wide geographic area with such groups as Opera Company of Philadelphia, Trio Eos, and The Crossing. She is passionate about keeping artists employed doing what they do best. Ms. Montalbano currently studies voice with Julianne Baird.

For most people, nightmares produce insomnia, exhaustion, and unease. For Graham Gordon Ramsay, a spate of severe nightmares in April 2020 developed into something more lasting and meaningful: a five-movement, 18-minute musical work for organ or string ensemble called "Introspections." To me, it's one of the most arresting artistic documents of the opening phase of the global coronavirus pandemic, and so we've made it the subject of this week's Song Exploder-style musical episode. (Headphones recommended!)Graham is a friend of the podcast; longtime listeners will recognize him as the composer of our opening theme. But he's also a prolific writer of contemporary pieces for solo voice, solo instruments, chamber ensemble, choir, and orchestra. In this three-way conversation, which includes organist and conductor Heinrich Christensen of King's Chapel, we retrace Graham's musical and psychological journey from the pandemic's dark, lonely early months (echoing through the turbulent, disquieting first and second movements of "Introspections") to the gradual adaptation and broader reckoning that marked the late summer of 2020 (reflected in the fifth and final movement's turn to more conventional major keys and harmonies).  As Graham himself emphasizes, there's no easy 1:1 correspondence between his pandemic experiences, his nightmares, and this composition. The piece is less literal than that, and listeners will, of course, bring their own experiences and interpretations to the work. But "Introspections" clearly takes its place among a genre of musical creations tied to a particular crisis or tragedy, with examples ranging from Benjamin Britten's "War Requiem" to Krzysztof Penderecki's "Threnody to the Victims of Hiroshima" to John Adams' "On the Transmigration of Souls," which won the Pulitzer Prize for its portrayal of the 9/11 attacks.Composers—alongside poets, artists, and even architects—help us gain some perspective on our collective traumas. And speaking for myself, both as Graham's friend and as one of the first to hear "Introspections," the piece will always be associated in my mind with the grim, stressful, baffling, but occasionally uplifting events of 2020.After the interview with Graham and Heinrich, stick around to hear "Introspections" in its entirety.I. Unrushed but steady (37:50)II. With an improvisatory feel (40:56)III. Quick, with a very light touch (46:08)IV. Uncomfortable, plodding (47:12)V. Synopsis During his later years, the German composer Johannes Brahms was a frequent visitor to the town of Meiningen, where the Grand Duke had a fine orchestra that gave stellar performances of Brahms' music. Early in 1891, Brahms heard one member of that orchestra, the clarinetist Richard Mülhfeld, perform chamber works by Mozart and Weber. Brahms was so impressed that they became fast friends. Listening to Mülhfeld play, Brahms became so enthusiastic about the clarinet's possibilities that he began writing chamber works for his new friend. Brahms was always particularly fond of the female alto voice whose timbre is similar to that of the clarinet, so Brahms promptly nicknamed Mülhfeld “Fraeulein Clarinet” and the “new prima donna.” For Mülhfeld, Brahms wrote a clarinet trio, which was followed by a clarinet quintet, and finally, a pair of clarinet sonatas, both composed in the summer of 1894. These two sonatas were first played by Mülhfeld with Brahms at a private performance in the home of the sister of the Duke of Meiningen on today's date that year. In November, the pair also gave private performances in Frankfurt for Clara Schumann and at Castle Altenstein for the Duke of Meiningen.  The first public performances occurred in Vienna in January of 1895. As they reach milestone birthdays, they talk to John Wilson about their work, and about the musical movement that links the three of them - Minimalism.Playlist:Philip Glass - Closing Steve Reich - Clapping John Adams - Phrygian Gates Bartok - Concerto For Two Pianos, Percussion and Orchestra, 3rd movt Stravinsky - Rite of Spring Bach Brandenburg 5 Charlie Parker - Be Bop Tchaikovsky's - 1812 Overture Bozo the Clown Philip Glass - Dance 8 Steve Reich - Livelihood John Adams - On the Transmigration of Souls Steve Reich - Different Trains Philip Glass - Floe Philip Glass - Facades Steve Reich - Clapping Steve Reich - Piano Phase Steve Reich - Drumming Steve Reich - Clapping John Adams - Grand Pianola Music Philip Glass - Knee Play 1 from Einstein on the Beach Philip Glass - Evening Song from Satyagraha John Adams - The People Are The Heroes Now from Nixon in China Steve Reich - The Cave John Adams - Hallelujah Junction Philip Glass - The Hours Steve Reich - Music for 18 Musicians Producer: Rebecca Armstrong.
