Today, on Karl and Crew Mornings, we kicked off a new weekly theme called Every Age and Stage. We discussed the importance of having wise counsel, especially from older generations. When navigating one's 20's and 30s, its important to have the 3 c's: character, conduct, and curiosity. Our Scripture references were 1 Timothy 4:12 and 2 Timothy 2:22. In these passages, Paul was investing in young Timothy, encouraging him to strive for godly character and conduct. Karl brought us a word from MBI's Chief Operating Officer, Mark Wagner, about the importance of staying curious as an adult. Finally, our guest this morning was Paul Angone. As a parent, children growing up is oh so bittersweet.  I am just now starting to adjust to the idea that I'm the mother of kids that aren't babies or toddlers anymore. While my kiddos are not yet flying the nest, many of you have expressed anxiety and sadness about the upcoming transition for your parenting to kiddos leaving the house. In this episode I'm joined by journalist Celia Dodd, author of “The Empty Nest: Your Changing Family, Your New Direction” and “All Grown Up: Nurturing Relationships With Adult Children”.   We cover this issue from so many angles from how this impacts you, your spouse, your adult child, a sibling still at home, how this is different for a single vs. a married or partnered parent and more. Celia approaches this subject with compassion and we discuss how to handle the myriad of emotions from sadness to fear of the unknown to anxiety that your child may be farther away than they've ever been from you and the excitement for getting in touch with other aspects of yourself beyond being a mother.   I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did, although I'll admit this interview made me anxious about my future for sure! Pointing towards work I need to do within myself to ease this transition for myself and my family - and illustrating that it's not too early to listen to this episode! “All you need is love” is a lie. This first episode might be a little controversial because I think saying “I love you” should not be the peak of relationship seriousness. Because for one, it's really easy to say I love you to someone you don't really know. I think we've gotten love all wrong and it's messing up our expectations of what it means to have a healthy relationship. We talk about falling in love like we're powerless against it. Love has taken control and we're plummeting face first right into it. And whether we fall into a “Hallmark Movie Love” where the high-powered city businesswoman meets up with the small town farmer and they work together to keep Pine City from getting redeveloped. Or a “Shakespearean Love” where there's going to be a bunch of tragedy waiting for you at the end, we talk about it like it's out of our control. Because I'm in love.  If all we need is love, why are so many people who are in love and getting married, falling out of love and getting divorced? Listen to the episode and hear why I think some other statements and parts of a relationship are WAY MORE IMPORTANT than saying I love you. If you want to read more about the lies of love, I write about it all in my new book 25 Lies Twentysomethings Need to Stop Believing, which you can find here: https://bit.ly/25-Lies
