With grandiose job descriptions, and rose-tinted portrayals of the workplace, is it really any wonder there are a lot of problems in recruiting boiling underneath the surface?? A lot of retention problems actually start in the recruiting process.. Is it that far of a stretch to understand why new hires are noping out of fresh jobs in the first six months? Def not. In the quest to find the perfect hire, job descriptions and interview tactics often portray a false image of what the position actually entails. So why aren't recruiters being more honest about the roles they're hiring for? Hebba chats with Talent Acquisition Consultant and Content Creator Rhona Pierce about how the recruitment system is broken and what HR can do to fix it. How can recruiters be more honest about job descriptions and work culture in their hiring practices? Hebba and Rhona debate if there's a way to make employees understand the full scope of a job's duties during the interview process before revealing some of the best practical strategies that can help retain, attract, and engage qualified talent. 00:00:10 - Recruiting Misconceptions: Valuable Talent Acquisition 00:02:52 - Company Actions That Prompt Immediate Resignation 00:05:01 - Navigating the Gap Between Job Expectations and Reality 00:09:28 - Why People Quit 00:15:14 - Is Recruiting Broken? 00:19:26 - Truth in Interviews 00:23:47 - Asking Questions Before Accepting a Job 00:27:24 - Navigating the Current Job Market 00:36:51 - Transparent Recruiting: Setting Clear Expectations 00:39:35 - Aligning Job Expectations Through Communication 00:44:15 - Maximizing Preparation for Successful Hiring Reach every worker with Firstup's intelligent communication platform. In this Story x Story Rewind episode, we're bringing you the audio from our recent "Games Industry Explained: All Quirks Required" roundtable discussion. Nigel and Tazziii are joined by Talent Acquisition Consultant, Terrence Cua, to discuss the ever-evolving landscape of the video game industry and the skills, talents, and qualities needed for a successful career. This event, originally a livestream, was part of the "Do I Look Like a Gamer?" campaign and took place at King's London headquarters, the makers of Candy Crush. Tune in to gain invaluable advice whether you're employed, a freelancer, or an indie developer aspiring to make your mark in the gaming industry.
So we're looking at how the words are actually formed. When you're hiring for a technology manager, what does that mean? Are you looking for a technical technology manager? Are you looking for someone who grew up in the chops of software development, knows all of the full delivery life cycle, or are you looking for someone who's more project focused? If your job description isn't conveying those skills or that type of clarification in the job description, you're not gonna get the right person. You might get lucky. But when you're hiring at scale, you know you can't do that time and time again. Episode 48 of the Jess Get Hired Podcast features Gary Ross, President and CEO of Inside Comms. In this episode, we are going to discuss one of the most challenging aspects of communication in the workplace: handling difficult conversations, or as we like to call them, "Tough Talks." In this episode, Gary and Jessica will go over how to approach and navigate these types of conversations with ease and confidence. Some of the things you will hear: Identify the objective of the conversation. Before you engage in any difficult conversation, it's important to identify the objective of the discussion. What do you hope to achieve from the conversation? Is it to resolve a conflict or to provide feedback? Knowing the objective will help you stay focused and on track during the conversation. Decide on how and when to communicate the message. Once you have identified the objective, it's time to decide on how and when to communicate the message. Choose a time and place that is private, quiet, and free of distractions. Consider the other person's schedule and make sure they have enough time to engage in the conversation. Determine what you want in the end and how to follow up. After the conversation, it's important to follow up and check in on the other person. This will show that you are committed to resolving the issue and maintaining a positive relationship. Be Honest and Empathic Anticipate responses and reactions Watch your body language and tone of voice Listen to Understand vs. Listen to React Handling difficult conversations can be a challenging experience, but with the right approach and mindset, it is possible to navigate these situations with ease and confidence. Speaker Bio: Kathleen is a self-described storyteller, who believes that everyone has a purpose and a dream and always has had a passion for learning about other people's stories. At a young age, Kathleen's love for travel, music, adventure, and curiosity about people was evident. She would run around her neighborhood with an old tape recorder of her mom's, eager to interview anyone in site, and would spend hours listening to their conversations. Throughout elementary school, her heroes were Anderson Cooper and Lisa Ling who she watched every morning from school on their news show. Kathleen has spent her career speaking with brilliant scientists and engineers across the globe, connecting them to impactful teams. She offers strategic insight to her leadership teams to support long-term growth development and business plans. But if you ask Kathleen what she is the proudest of throughout her career, it would always be the trusted partnerships and collaboration she has built with her people. How often am I willing to be vulnerable and uncomfortable to grow? This episode of Big Fish in the Talent Pool is inspired by some beginning-of-the-year introspection. In 2022, I am focusing on making a little more “space” for myself, my family, and my clients. By allocating time for my relationships, I have decided to pause the podcast, at least for a while. I thought a nice capstone before my break would be a recent conversation I had with Kevin Grossman at the Talent Board. We talk about PeopleResults, our TA practice, a little about my career, and the never-ending quest to improve the candidate experience. Over the last four years, I have been fortunate to interview TA Leaders such as David Reed of Vail Resorts, Carly Sanchez of Wells Fargo, Sylvette Sawyer of OpenDoor, Rob Dromgoole of Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, Diana Barr of Boeing, Stephanie Zywien of General Motors, and Tim Streeter of (formerly) Whirlpool. Big leaders - all - and each with diverse views on industry best practices, their path to TA Leadership, and the latest TA technology. One final note, I am dedicating this capstone episode to my Grandma Svea (who is 100 and still kicking!) for modeling what it's like to pour your heart and soul into your work and your family. In this episode, you'll listen in on Erin's conversation with two emerging TA Leaders, Courtney Connor of Sequoia Consulting Group and Julia "Wonder Woman" Adler of Wayne Technologies. These "Future Big Fish" share their unique perspective from their 4-5 years of experience in consulting, staffing, and sourcing. They discuss their views of TA Leadership from an individual contributor perspective, the importance of keeping up with ever-evolving technologies, and their favorite TA technology right now. Both Courtney and Julia share their insight into why the younger generation is disrupting the status quo of leadership and following new, alternative avenues of success outside of typical paths to “success”. Throughout this conversation, there is a lot in store for both Big Fish and Future Big Fish listeners alike. And as for the more seasoned TA Leaders, stay tuned to hear how Courtney and Julia answer the question, "Fill in the Blank: We could fix Recruiting if only we would…__________.” Their answers might surprise you! Jacob Kramer is the Vice President of Driver Recruiting at US Xpress, Inc., a job he got by pitching his ideas to the CEO and Head of HR for automating recruitment in their industry. He had transformed stylist hiring for Regis Corp and saw synergies that could apply. So he took a risk, made the pitch, and the rest is history. A self-proclaimed introvert with a drive to solve big recruiting challenges, Jacob Kramer has a knack for using Recruitment Process Automation to replace time-consuming, manual steps in large-scale recruitment. Then he takes it a step further. Never one to be content with the status quo, Jacob challenges his vendors to create and deliver groundbreaking enhancements. Listen as he describes how he and his team germinated the idea of a geo-fenced AI Assistant who, based on census data, matches candidate demographics. No more generic bots for US Xpress candidates! The progressive steps in TA and eventually leadership were on the advice of a mentor who encouraged Lianne early on to consider Recruiting as a potential career path, which she did, and she's never looked back. Today, Lianne is doubling down on Conversational AI as a strategy to transform Core-Mark's recruitment approach, as she tackles the challenge of over 5,000 hires annually, most of them hourly. Tim Streeter is the classic example of Daniel Pink's A Whole New Mind, living out the power of using both left brain and right brain simultaneously in his Global Talent Acquisition leadership roles at Whirlpool and Accenture, and in the rest of his life. Where does he find the time and energy to flex into both realms in everything he does? That's Tim's secret, which he gladly shares in his book, The Contentment Commitment, and on Episode 38 of Big Fish in the Talent Pool. With degrees in Economics and Math, we could expect him to be all quantitative analysis and data, on which he does rely heavily. But he's also a great communicator, a strong people leader, a competitive soccer player, an author, and a musician, having made 9 albums over the past 10 years. Tim is creating his own legacy one purposeful decision at a time. Listen and be inspired! Contagious passion, gratitude and optimism for the future of Talent Acquisition characterize my discussion with MaryAnne Pelland, Citizens Head of TA Strategy and Services, in Episode 36. Having studied Biology and intending to be a doctor, she morphed her passion for helping others into an early career in staffing scientific talent, then insurance, then Citizens - where she's been making a difference for 17 years. According to MaryAnne, a career in recruiting is "The best job there is!". We talked Customer Empathy, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, TA Tech (Note: Paradox/Olivia and OutMatch skeptics will want to hear this), Candidate Experience , and Citizen's approach to retraining and repurposing branch banking employees during the pandemic. MaryAnne bakes practicality mixed with innovation into a fascinating TA model. My favorite quote from our conversation: “In every opportunity, good or bad, you should reflect and think about what you gained from it. Sometimes that gain is what not to do but some of it is recognizing that you pushed yourself to do the hard and scary things.” Can you find the Easter Egg in this week's Big Fish conversation?
