Employees aren't just asking for feedback—they're begging for it.  So why are we still serving them stale, twice-a-year performance reviews like it's 1999? Let's talk about fairness—or, more accurately, let's talk about how your company is probably failing at it! You know the drill: the ‘neutral' policies that somehow always disadvantage the same people, the DEI initiatives that start and end with a Slack emoji, the performance reviews that feel more like a lottery than actual feedback.  This week, Zach Nunn (founder of Living Corporate and certified corporate truth-teller) joins me to rip apart the illusion of fairness at work!  We're talking remote work double standards, the sneaky policies that keep marginalized employees stuck, and why ‘transparency' is often just corporate code for ‘we'll tell you the rules but not how to win.'  If most workplaces were actually fair, we wouldn't need this episode!  But since that's not our reality yet… press play and let's get figure it out together. Choosing the wrong HR platform is rife with regrets: losing a top performer, promoting the wrong person, or failing to engage your team when the business needs it most. Welcome to a brand new season of the podcast, where I'm flipping the script and diving deep into more diverse topics! I'll be challenging myself (and my guests) to rethink what we think we know about the world of work, and how seemingly unrelated topics still tie back to HR. Today, we've got the one and only Sarika Lamont, aka my Comp Guru Queen, joining us! If you want to understand pay transparency and total rewards in a way that actually makes sense, Sarika is here to break it all down.  Spoiler alert: pay isn't as simple as it seems—and neither is the communication behind it.  We talk about why employees often misunderstand compensation, how we can improve the conversation, and why education is the key to getting pay transparency right. Are you ready to unlock the full potential of your workforce? Matt Crawford speaks with educator and author Matthew Ferrence about his book, I Hate It Here, Please Vote for Me: Essays on Rural Decay. When a progressive college professor runs for the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in a deeply conservative rural district, he loses. That's no surprise. But the story of how Ferrence loses and, more importantly, how American political narratives refuse to recognize the existence and value of nonconservative rural Americans offers insight into the political morass of our nation. Ferrence and I discuss how we feel voters are being spoken at instead of to and how the machine of politics makes some outcomes predetermined against the will of the people who vote for those exact outcomes. A great read at any time in our history but especially now.

In several ways, akin to the growing collective demographic of people who don't have children, the overlooked value of voter relevance & influence is too often dismissed by dominant political narratives. Tune in for this timely conversation with Matthew Ferrence, author of I Hate It Here, Please Vote for Me: Essays on Rural Political Decay (West Virginia University Press, 2024). In 2020, Matthew Ferrence ran for the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, in a deeply-red district, and lost quite badly. In his newest book, he reflects on this experience to explore how American political narratives refuse to recognize the existence and value of nonconservative rural Americans, and how losing offers insight into the political morass of our nation. In I Hate It Here, Please Vote for Me he offers a counter-narrative to stereotypes of monolithic rural American voters and emphasizes that the ways stories are told about rural America are a source for the bitter divide between Red America and Blue America. It's no surprise that I think HR and people leaders have one of the hardest roles at any organization. For me, it feels like sometimes we're not seen as true organizational partners. Or our role is so diminished and viewed as not important, yet everyone else in a business performs better because of the work that HR does. Coincidence? I think not! So, how can we finally be seen as key drivers to company growth, instead of the employee who puts out fires and pushes paperwork? My guest, Chris Haygood of Astute Edge, is here to shine a light on just how pivotal HR is when it comes to tackling big organizational challenges, not just the compliance stuff. We're diving into how the view of HR is changing, its strategic importance, and some hands-on tactics to help HR pros cement their role as key business influencers. Our chat also touches on the next decade of HR, including the role of AI and the need for HR leaders to be considered for CEO positions. This past season, I've asked each of my guests one simple question to find the root cause of employee dissatisfaction— “What would cause you to quit?” And in this episode, we're taking a look at the best answers my all-star roster of HR experts had to give. With grandiose job descriptions, and rose-tinted portrayals of the workplace, is it really any wonder there are a lot of problems in recruiting boiling underneath the surface?? A lot of retention problems actually start in the recruiting process..  Is it that far of a stretch to understand why new hires are noping out of fresh jobs in the first six months? It's BM time again and that means it's time for another episode this week Monday! This time our number one fan Brian is back with more great stuff and even more great things to talk about. Since it's his third appearance on the show and we don't have an official Bubbles Mushrooms smoking jacket for him, he has created a suggestion for the number one fan prize! Brian also completed our request from his first appearance on the show and finally made our Bubbles Mushrooms transformer - it's a mushroom that transforms into our dead dog, Bubbles! It is really quite amazing and maybe Katie will post pictures of it on our official Bubbles Mushrooms Instagram Page For Number One Fans! Brian answers Luke's questions about 3D printing, we discuss who takes the top place in the BM Number One Fan category and who's hot and who's not - who are your favorite sexy BM guests? Katie wonders if Brian has helped with any more procedures at his "doctor job", Edward reveals that he loves everyone after his colonoscopies and Brian talks about a potential future business opportunity. This week's activity is a rehash of Brian's favorite game that we made up called I Hate It Here but instead of hate, this time it's LOVE... or still hate. Can we save all of the stupid places that we hate by filling them with joy? Will the DMV have live bands like Primus performing? Can we make the podcast studio better by filling it with rocks? What if the circus had caged clown children? Will Brian wear an "I'm Poor" sign on his big date? How can we fix the Ohio Turnpike? Find out this week on Bubbles Mushrooms! This week on BM, we have our friend and #1 fan Brian on the program. Brian downloads show on his Motorola RAZR and Edward burns it to a CD-R for him so he can listen conveniently! We all share what our white people names really mean in a contest of who has the whitest sounding name of all time. Daisy barfed on the floor and then took a dump in the kitchen while Luke was cleaning up the barf. Jenn was going to take Daisy to the beach but since it's raining there will be no W.A.D. Brian tells us all about his job where he carries bowling balls around the medical center where he's a records person, just like Luke! Brian does not read the records, he just keeps the records and fingers through they and them on occasion. Brian also has a business plan on the side that is more than meets the eye, brought us some show-and-tell and also brought us each our own little toy as a present! Edward also brought some sexy show-and-tell that makes Katie horny, Jenn so sad that her vagina falls off and makes Luke call people names. Brian also brought all of the members of the program a neat gift that each and every one of us could not keep our hands off of for the rest of the show. Katie had a bunch of things to talk about before Edward reminded her of the fact that she only did chores, Luke Googles W.A.P. for fun, Katie has a Happy Meal Cat update and Leonard the Dog is finally ready to talk about his feelings. This week's activity or game or workshop is called [I Hate It Here]. Would you like to visit [Uncle Ted's Crush 'n' Eat Family Restaurant]? Would you rather tromp your tootsies through a foot of honey or a field of dog turds? How many fingers would you give up to ride a roller coaster or play a carnie game? What happens to all of the loose fingers at the end of the work day, boss?! You can definitely smash the 'rollercoaster go button' with your stump or forehead. Fabio is on all of the rides. Fabio is naked. Listen to hear all of the other dumb crap we come up with and remember to bring your paper toilet seat covers! Email the show at bubbmush@gmail.com, follow us on Instagram @bubbmush and stay tuned for Jenn's big TickTock Video Project coming soon! YET ANOTHER TULSA FOOTBALL GAME WAS CANCELED ("postponed") I HATE IT HERE. With the extra time due to no game recap, we dive deep into the SMU game - a rivalry game with massive implications. A win on Saturday gets Tulsa ranked for the first time in a decade. We go in on the Mustangs' coaching staff, key players, notable injures, our thoughts on the matchup, and more. After the SMU preview, we take a look around the conference and discuss the recent announcement of Tulsa Basketball's non-conference schedule. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thegoldenhurricast/support

UGH, I HATE IT HERE. There's no feeling like having a few drinks and then you put on one of your favorite moody RnB songs, then that snowballs into a whole mixtape. I feel everyone needs this type of mix in their life for when that time comes around when you want to express your feelings, or you simply just want to go through the moods. This is filled with some of my favorite chilled RnB, "Channel X," Nu-RnB vibes from the likes of Drake, Bryson Tiller, Dvsn, Post Malone, & many more.
