On this episode of Conduct Detrimental: THE Sports Law Podcast, Dan Lust (@SportsLawLust) is joined by Tarun Sharma (@tksharmalaw), Mike Kravchenko (Watch on YouTube) and special guest, Sam Ehrlich (@samcehrlich) to jump into a discussion covering a wild last week or so in the sports law universe - and our episode is jam-packed.Was it just a dumb joke or a reputational and career-ender? We break down the implications of Falcons DC Jeff Ulbrich for his son's impersonating of a team exec and prank-calling Shadeur Sanders, along with other players, during one of the most important moments of their lives.Judge Claudia Wilken pushes back on settlement approval, citing walk-on harm and a lack of clarity on grandfathering athletes. Sam explains how Holly McLean's story at Oklahoma exemplifies the chaos for cut athletes and why this delay could haunt the NCAA for years. Sam also unpacks the anti-competitive logic used in Pavia and Elad's recent wins, and why lawsuits are replacing waivers. With the Edge Collective attempting a $200K clawback from Madden Iamaleava, we ask: Is a 50% clawback clause enforceable or a penalty in disguise? Sam, Mike, and Tarun dive into liquidated damages law, incentives, and the risk of opening this can of worms nationwide.Champions Blue LLC might be the most important structural shift in college sports. Will this move invite private capital? Change employee classification? Or blur the line between collectives and athletic departments entirely?New lawyer, media silence, and ESPN likely out. The crew analyzes why Shannon's legal team's strategy may have cost him his job, and how even a winning legal case may lose in the court of public opinion.Professor Sam Ehrlich's College Sports Litigation Tracker: https://www.collegesportslitigationtracker.com/ ***Have a topic you want to write about? The duo break down the legal contradictions, media strategy, and what might come next for Club Shay Shay and its $100M future.Next, a settled sexual assault claim involving Rangers star Artemi Panarin was leaked, despite NDAs and no admission of wrongdoing. With both Panarin and MSG having agreed to a confidential resolution, how did this story end up on The Athletic's front page? From Nico Iamaleava's transfer saga to the Arkansas AD hinting at legal action against athletes breaking NIL deals, the wild world of name, image, and likeness continues to spiral. On this episode of Conduct Detrimental: THE Sports Law Podcast, Dan Lust (@SportsLawLust) is joined by Tarun Sharma (@tksharmalaw) and Mike Lawson (@Mikesonoflaw) to tackle another wild week at the intersection of sports, law, and media. The three mainstays are also joined by special guest, A.J. Perez (@byajperez)The trio breaks down the latest in House v. NCAA, where the much-anticipated $2.8B settlement inches closer to final approval... or potential collapse. The lack of resolution around roster limits, opt-outs, and future NIL frameworks continues to leave schools, players, and lawyers in limbo as the July 1st deadline looms. With opt-outs like Chris Jenkins already launching new lawsuits, it's clear that House won't be the last courtroom battle. The crew shifts to the dramatic case of Tennessee QB Nico Iamaleava, whose reported NIL-related “holdout” shocked the college football world. With conflicting stories from insiders and a do-not-contact tag surrounding his transfer to UCLA, the guys break down what this means for collectives, contracts, and whether schools are finally taking control back from athletes. In the same segment, the Rob Wright transfer saga highlights the chaos of the portal era as BYU wins out on a key prospect despite Baylor's apparent expectation of a return. The conversation turns to buyouts, contractual enforcement, and whether unionization might be the only path to lasting reform. Finally, Dan welcomes back AJ Perez, formerly of Front Office Sports, to discuss his newest role as producer of Netflix's upcoming Untold documentary on Brett Favre. They dive into the challenges of producing a legal minefield like Favre's ongoing saga, journalistic ethics, and why defamation lawsuits, even from big names, don't always go as planned.***Have a topic you want to write about? On this episode of Conduct Detrimental: THE Sports Law Podcast, the NIL hour is BACK as we are led and joined by Tarun Sharma (@tksharmalaw) and Mike Lawson (@Mikesonoflaw) for a quick trip around the college sports law world. Is college football facing a flag-planting frenzy? A weekend of intense rivalry games, headlined by the Michigan-Ohio State showdown, set the stage for a chaotic day of heated exchanges, postgame brawls, and field-storming flag displays. Punches were thrown, helmets went flying, and tensions boiled over as fans, coaches, and players engaged in verbal sparring, physical altercations, and, of course, flag-staking dramatics. State lawmakers are pushing back against restrictions on NIL compensation and the NCAA is facing significant challenges in regulating NIL deals. While things are looking to be moved away from NIL collectives, Mike explains what this means for schools and their individual states. Tarun and Mike cap off the episode sharing their what to watch for....including but not limited to point-shaving, student-athlete prop betting, and the SEC vs. ACC basketball challenge. On this episode of Conduct Detrimental: THE Sports Law Podcast, Dan Lust (@SportsLawLust) is joined by Tarun Sharma (@tksharmalaw) and Mike Kravchenko (Watch on YouTube) to discuss over an hour of topics including the San Jose State volleyball controversy, Baker Mayfield's lawsuit against his father, and the ongoing legal battle between Drake and Kendrick Lamar over streaming manipulation and defamation. The conversation highlights the complexities of these cases and their implications in the sports and music industries. A debate around women's sports eligibility related to San Jose State Women's Volleyball has sparked conversation over fairness and inclusivity in collegiate sports, as court rulings uphold the player's right to compete, while critics push for policy changes. Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield has filed a $12 million lawsuit against his father and brother's private equity firm, alleging breach of a settlement agreement involving misappropriated funds. Drake has filed preliminary petitions accusing Universal Music Group of using bots and payola to promote Kendrick Lamar's hit "Not Like Us" at his expense while considering defamation claims over lyrics that target his character. Dan Lust (@SportsLawLust) is joined by Tarun Sharma (@tksharmalaw), Mike Lawson (@Mikesonoflaw), and Mike Kravchenko (Watch on YouTube) for a fun trip around the sports law world. The Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson fight raised questions about its legitimacy...people are getting ready to sue. Not only about the quality and concept of the fight being "rigged," but also Netflix's quality of the stream. A lot to unpack here. Warner Brothers secured a settlement that allows them to continue producing 'Inside the NBA' through ESPN. The NBA's settlement details are here as the team dives into each aspect...while the Knicks are under investigation. What for this team? The Brunsons. Dan was in the New York Post, Mike watched Old School and gives his review....but best of all Tarun and Mike Lawson go through a short version of their NIL hour to discuss point-shaving scandals, Bryce Underwood changing his decision, and the possible beginning of the end NIL collectives... Tarun Sharma, Conduct Detrimental Sports Law Podcast, on FSU’s lawsuits and where he believes this will go. What did FSU sign, that the ACC is trying to get the courts to say in their favor? How important is this for the ACC? What does “grant of Rights” mean legally? The fact that it goes until 2036, can that make it declared illegal? How should the ACC be looking at all of this and their perspective of things? If athletes are declared employees, will schools eliminate other non-revenue sports because they would not be able to afford them?

Does the NCAA actually want to change their model?? Welcome back to the intersection of sports and the law! On this episode of Conduct Detrimental: THE Sports Law Podcast, Dan Lust (@SportsLawLust) is joined by Mike Lawson (@MikeSonofLaw) is and Tarun Sharma (@tksharmalaw) to discuss the latest surrounding the NCAA. FSU gets snubbed from the College Football Playoffs. (2:00) FSU had an undefeated season and was ranked 4th going into the conference championship season. However, they ultimately fell to 5th place and Alabama took over the 4th place following their upset over Georgia. Florida Senator Rick Scott sent a demand letter to the committee for texts, emails, notes, etc. regarding their decision to snub FSU. Governor Ron DeSantis also stated that the state budget would put aside $1M for a possible lawsuit for FSU being left out of the playoffs. We break down the potential lawsuits that may emerge and analyze the CFP selection committee's decision to drop FSU. During halftime of the Texas v. Oklahoma State football game, two participants competed in a halftime game in which they had to throw footballs into a target. (4:21) After video replay evidence, and a viral tweet by Dan Lust, Dr. Pepper has agreed to award both halftime participants with tuition scholarships due to an incorrect determination of the winner. The NCAA is proposing a new subdivision conference where the "haves" can make up their own rules, and the "have nots" will sit on the sidelines. (34:59) NCAA President Charlie Baker released a proposal in which a new subdivision of college athletics which school can opt-in to. The schools that opt-in would be based upon the financial status of the schools, and the schools within the subdivision would be able to create their own new rules regarding scholarships, recruiting, NIL, and more. The biggest thing would be that these universities would be able to enter into NIL deals with their own student athletes. This may show that the NCAA is willing to adapt to the times, but there is still a long way to go. *** Have a topic you want to write about? Tarun Sharma, NIL Law Clinic, has made a special clinic at the University of Minnesota to dive into NIL debates and structures. What’s important that we’re seeing right now that’s impactful to NIL? What is failing so far with NIL? Where does Tarun see NIL going from here? What needs to happen to improve the system?
Welcome back to THE Sports Law Podcast! This is your one-stop shop for all things sports law. In this episode, Tarun Sharma (@tksharmalaw) and John Nucci (@JNucci23) host the podcast to give you the latest news surrounding college sports. An Iowa state appeals board recently approved a monetary settlement stemming from a racial discrimination case filed by former Iowa football players. (0:46) The settlement totals more than $4 million with $2 million coming from Iowa taxpayers' pockets. This agreement has prompted prominent voices to question why the AD for Iowa, Gary Barta, is still in his current position at the school. Since his tenure started in 2006, there have been four discrimination lawsuits totaling almost $7 million in damages. Nick Saban recently commented on the current state of NIL. (10:04) His statements point to his thinking that players are now choosing based on money rather than the best opportunity for their future. While Saban seems to routinely criticize the use of NIL, Alabama is working to create an environment to help their athletes produce content for NIL. Given the prominence of NIL in the college space, golfers are faced with additional hurdles when navigating both NIL rules and USGA amateurism rules. (20:21) One of the rules, in particular, is that college golfers may not give directed instruction for any sort of compensation. While college golfers may be able to release videos with general tips, they cannot be directed at an individual. International players, which make up quite a large percentage of college golfers also face hurdles regarding their visas. John Ruiz recently filed a lawsuit regarding his classification as a booster by the NCAA. (26:24) This lawsuit comes in the wake of the punishment handed down by the NCAA following the recruiting violations at the University of Miami. Ruiz had previously stated that if the NCAA's statements about Ruiz's classification as a booster hurt him financially then he would take legal action. The NCAA defines boosters as “representatives of the institution's athletic interests.” *** Have a topic you want to write about? ANYONE and EVERYONE can publish for ConductDetrimental.com. Welcome back to THE Sports Law Podcast! We cover all recent stories at the intersection of sports and law. Today, host Dan Lust (@SportsLawLust) is joined by Tarun Sharma (@tksharmalaw) and John Nucci (@JNucci23) to break down the latest stories in sports law. The NCAA handed down its first NIL related violation against the University of Miami. (2:48) The violation pertained to the Cavinder twins who currently play for Miami's women's basketball team. The NCAA charged a prominent Miami booster John Ruiz with having an impermissible dinner with the twins during their transfer recruitment. This marks the first time that the NCAA has handed down such a violation and could show the path that new President Charlie Baker will take to enforce NCAA NIL guidelines. The guys give their pick of where the next NIL crackdown will occur. (16:04) The odds were set at -300 for the SEC, +125 for the ACC, +250 for the BIG10, and +450 for the rest of the field. John ended up picking the ACC citing other prominent boosters surrounding Syracuse. Dan laid his money down on the SEC citing the heavy hitters such as Georgia and Alabama. He also talks about the Jimbo Fisher and Nick Saban drama. Tarun placed his bet on the BIG10 citing value and highlighting the bigger schools like Michigan, Ohio State, and Michigan State. Details have leaked about contract provisions present in the contracts of current LIV golfers. (22:17) These provisions, as detailed by John, seem to show the restrictive nature of the contracts that could have an affect on their current lawsuit with the PGA. These provisions also seem, in some ways, to contradict the statements from golfers who made the jump about the reasons why LIV would allow them more freedom. Dan and Tarun provide a little educational segment using the recent defamation lawsuit filed against Pat McAfee. (34:50) This includes what to do when you receive a complaint as well as the different ways a case can go following the initial filing. Dan also talks about the possibility that this case could move to federal court due to the residence of the parties involved. *** Have a topic you want to write about? Welcome back to THE Sports Law Podcast! We keep you up to date on everything at the intersection of sports and the law! In this episode, Tarun Sharma and Evan Mattel take the reins to discuss breaking issues in the world of Sports Law. Special guests include Francis Carlota (@SluggaSports) and Mike Scott. Jaren Jackson Jr.'s name has been in the Twitter news recently due to a stat disparity between home games and away games. (2:35) Jackson has many more rebounds and steals at home as compared to away games. While the stats differ considerably, it seems that the explanation is more that the team struggles on the road leading to the stat difference. The official Twitter account for the NBA referees released a statement regarding the outcry following a missed foul on Lebron James that ultimately led to a Laker's loss in overtime. (10:42) Concerns have been raised that officiating woes are starting to cause people to complain about their sports bets being sabotaged. This week, Vice President of Enforcement Jon Duncan, stated that the NCAA will be able to use circumstantial evidence to presume an NIL violation. (19:29) The burden of proof has shifted to the school to prove that they did not violate the NCAA's NIL policies. This week Stetson Bennett was arrested following a call of someone loudly banging on doors. (29:20) Officers found Bennett intoxicated and arrested him. It is uncertain whether or not this arrest will affect his NFL draft stock. News has dropped that Sinclair Broadcasting is on the brink of bankruptcy. (33:39) Sinclair controls the Bally networks which provide local broadcasting for multiple sports teams. Evan is joined by Mike Scott, Associate General Counsel for the Washington Nationals to discuss his journey into sports law. (40:49) *** Have a topic you want to write about?
