In this episode of the Telly Awards podcast, we dig into equitable representation in media with Madeline Di Nonno, CEO of Geena Davis Institute. For the past 20 years, the institute has pioneered groundbreaking research on the life-changing impact of representation. By exposing and exploring the interconnected identities often marginalized in the media, their work reinvents, transforms and inspires how global content creators tell stories. How far has the film industry come in representing women, people of color, the disabled, overweight people, LGBTQIA+, and adults over the age of 50? Representation “still falls short,” according to Madeline di Nonno of the Geena Davis Institute. In this podcast episode, we dig into their 2024 study of G, PG, and PG-13 films with budgets over $10 million. For example, women starred in just 35.3% of leading roles. Hosted on Acast. Welcome to the first episode of 2025! In this episode of THE POWER OF RE:INVENTION, host Kathi Sharpe-Ross kicks off the year with an inspiring conversation featuring Madeline Di Nonno, President and CEO of the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media. Madeline shares how a turning point in her career—when two significant life events collided—pushed her to reimagine her path and embrace Reinvention. She reflects on leaving behind a successful corporate career in entertainment to lead a mission-driven organization advocating for inclusion and representation in media. The conversation explores the challenges and rewards of career transitions, the impact of research and AI on gender bias in storytelling, and the importance of staying adaptable in a rapidly evolving world. Madeline's story reminds us that the most transformative moments often come from life's biggest disruptions. Whether you're navigating your own Reinvention or looking for inspiration to start the year with purpose, this episode offers powerful insights and actionable wisdom to set you on the right path. Key Takeaways: Reinvention often begins with a moment of discomfort—embrace it as an opportunity. Life rarely unfolds in a straight line; sometimes, challenges lead us to the most meaningful paths. Take stock of what truly matters to you and let that guide your decisions. AI and technology are reshaping every industry; staying curious and adaptable is non-negotiable. Reinvention is not a one-time event—it's a mindset that you can revisit whenever life calls for it. Remoy shares some stats from Soraya's seminal report (check it out; it's linked below) about how genders are represented in leading roles. Turns out that there is surprising parity among the binary genders in leading character representation.Girls being in leading roles is not as big a deterrent in boys' TV shows as we might collectively think… More on that later.Women and girls are way more represented than they used to be, but how much are current gender depictions on boys' TV shows challenging MASKulinity? "Having power doesn't have to dilute others power; in fact real power amplifies it." ~ Rochelle Marie The landscape of leadership is changing. Gone are the days when a strong arm and a directive attitude were the only definitions of power. In this episode, we peel back the layers of traditional "masculine" power to explore a more balanced, humane approach to leadership. This one's for you if you're looking to redefine your own concept of power and step into leadership roles with authenticity and grace. In this week's episode you will learn: Questioning Traditional Forms of PowerLeadership is evolving, and many career-focused women are seeking alternative forms of power that don't rely on an 'I'm the boss here' approach. We explore the limitations and drawbacks of this one-sided view of power, especially in a rapidly changing world where adaptability and collaboration are becoming increasingly crucial. The Landscape of 'Masculine' and 'Feminine' TraitsSociety often pegs traits like decisiveness, authority, and analytical thinking as "masculine," while labeling empathy, collaboration, and emotional intelligence as "feminine." We delve into why these categorisations exist and how they influence our perceptions of leadership. Understanding these biases can help us navigate towards a more balanced, effective form of power. The Balancing Act: Integrating Diverse TraitsLeadership isn't about being entirely 'masculine' or 'feminine'; it's about the harmonious blending of these traits into a holistic leadership style. We discuss the real-world application of integrating these traits, from being self-aware to amplifying others' unique abilities, leading to effective and humane leadership. Practical Steps for Embracing Balanced PowerThe journey to redefining power in leadership involves both introspection and action. We talk about practical steps like coaching and mentoring, dismantling limiting beliefs, and mindfulness practices that can help you tap into your innate wisdom and redefine your approach to power. A lot has happened politically and culturally since this podcast launched eight years ago. In this anniversary episode, I celebrate a number of wins while also reflecting on the importance of learning from history to avoid repeating past mistakes. For example, Lee Grant, an Oscar and Emmy-winning actress, overcame being blacklisted during the anti-Communist era. Her resilience and courage in speaking out against injustice serve as a lesson for today. I also highlight the work of The Geena Davis Institute on Gender and Media, which has expanded its focus to champion inclusion of the six major identities of gender, race/ethnicity, LGBTQIA+, disability, age 50+, and body type in media and entertainment. In addition to looking back on some of Advanced TV Herstory's episodes from the past year, I celebrate ATVH's inclusion in IMDb and the anticipation of reaching a new audience. Because ATVH is not beholden to sponsors, I can proudly say that I provide an unfiltered view of both historical and current obstacles to full representation and valuation. Many of these obstacles are at the center of the ongoing strike by the Writers Guild and the use of artificial intelligence. With a commitment to recognizing the importance of representation and critical thinking in the face of rapidly changing media landscapes, I thank you for your support of this podcast over the last eight years and I look forward to uncovering and sharing more untold stories of women in the year to come. For STEM professions, male characters outnumber female characters two-to-one (70.2% / 29.8%). 5: In live action, female characters account for most of the screen time (58.7%) and speaking time (58.8%), higher than any previous year. Two-thirds (62.6%) of children's TV episodes pass the Bechdel-Wallace Test 6: Children are being trained to harbor unconscious biases from a very young age. Tweens consume up to 6 hrs media a day, while teens up to 9 hrs (Common Sense Media). 7: The Geena Davis Institute found an alarming degree of sexualization in kids' tv. Now sexualization is a descriptor thrown around a lot. Still, in essence, it boils down to representation wherein a person's value is primarily or even entirely derived from their sexual appeal - or, as they write: ‘when physical beauty is equated with sexiness, when sexuality is inappropriately imposed on someone, or when a person is sexually objectified.' The results were concerning. There was an emphasis on physical appearance for women. Female characters were almost twice as likely to be better than average looking or stunning (37.9% / 18.9%). They wore more revealing clothing and were more likely to be shown as partially nude. 8: Another study found that female characters in kids' tv were more likely to use magic to solve their problems in children's tv, while male characters were more likely to use STEM skills or physical strength, which set troubling ideas for what women can achieve in reality, as well as potentially limiting men's prime attributes to the physical. https://www.cbc.ca/news/entertainment/childrens-tv-study-diversity-1.5118385 9: This all sets up disturbing tropes and expectations of real girls and women. 10: An alarming experiment discovered that gender biases were present in really young kids because when they were asked what they would be when they grew up, the level of ambition was so much higher in boys and, even worse, when asked what they'd be grown up as another gender, a girl came up with more options while a boy said ‘If I was a girl I'd have to be nothing' despairingly. These biases are being taken to heart unconsciously and very young. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

She went on to star in many films including The Fly, Beetlejuice, The Long Kiss Goodnight, Stuart Little, A League of Their Own, and The Accidental Tourist for which she won her first Academy Award. She was again nominated for an Academy Award and Golden Globe for her performance in Thelma & Louise. Geena is also the Founder and Chair of the non-profit Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media, which engages film and television creators to dramatically increase the percentage of female characters and reduce gender stereotyping in media made for children 11 and under. She is now recognized for her tireless advocacy of women and girls nearly as much as for her acting accomplishments.  In this conversation with Jay, Geena discusses her activism in Hollywood, as well as her latest book, Dying of Politeness: A Memoir, where she chronicles her "journey to badassery" and makes a powerful case for why Hollywood has a crucial role to play in promoting women's rights around the globe.  Please find a transcription of this episode: https://allaboutchangepodcast.com/podcast-episode/geena-davis/ See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

I am obsessed with today's guest and I'm not even going to pretend otherwise. Geena Davis, the star of such seminal movies as Tootsie, Beetlejuice, Thelma & Louise, A League of Their Own and the underrated classic, The Long Kiss Goodnight, TURNED UP AT MY ACTUAL HOUSE to record a witty, warm and fascinating conversation.*We talk about her feelings of imposter syndrome and self-doubt in the early days of her career, the fact that her failure as a model led to her first film role alongside Dustin Hoffman (who gave her incredible advice on how to defend herself against the amorous advances of her male co-stars) and the revelation of being diagnosed with ADD in her 40s. Along the way, we touch on height (she's 6ft! A tall woman like me!), the #MeToo movement, representation, almost becoming an Olympic archer, being an older mother and the seismic impact her friendship with Susan Sarandon had on Davis's life. I can't wait for you all to listen.*yes, she met my ginger cat Huxley and they got along famously.--Geena Davis's gloriously warm and ironic memoir, Dying of Politeness, is out now: https://www.waterstones.com/book/dying-of-politeness/geena-davis/9780008508111--How To Fail With Elizabeth Day is hosted and produced by Elizabeth Day. Welcome to Season 2, Episode 14! Most people like a good joke, but when it is harmful or demeaning, or there is a pattern of a specific target being laughed at instead of laughed with, then it can lead to reinforcing stereotypes and power dynamics. This is what has happened to Asian Pacific people in the U.S., and being the target of jokes desensitizing the impact with audiences and normalizes mocking of AAPI individuals. Today we take time to talk about some key moments when AAPI people were made to be the joke in movies or by comedians, celebrities, and athletes. There's some great work done by the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media. As we are now starting to open up globally,  cinemas return with the dynamic and nostalgic shared experience only a movie theatre can bring.    The combination of image & score can affect us so deeply, it's no surprise we hold the movie-going experience so dear to our cultures.    The creativity derived from the onset of the moving image has been astounding & so extraordinarily influential on how we tell stories. So powerful are these creative gems, they become inseparable from their scores, can be recognized with one line, and immediately felt emotionally with a 10 second clip.   John & Gordon talk about the influence of film on their Creative processes and way of thinking creatively.  Each choose 1 film which forever changed the way they viewed film, understood story, heard scores differently and simply rocked their world. John has chosen the 1985 John Hughes classic “The Breakfast Club” to discuss his relationship to the experience of the film and how he finds Creative influence in its story and characters.  Gordon has selected the shockingly dark and deeply emotive “Blue Velvet” (1986) by David Lynch, to discuss the larger picture of what affects our world, our relationships, transformations and the beauty found in life.    The Creative influences are endless when you have David Lynch directing and writing,  and Angelo Badalamenti creating  the atmospheric and mood altering score. Gordon discusses meeting with Geena Davis (Disney Parks Ambassador) and how her Geena Davis Institute is changing the faces we see on the big and small screen, as well as those responsible for creating the stories.   “If she can see it, she can be it” is the mantra that has expanded beyond bringing more women into visibility in all walks of life - but to the multitudes of diverse people who are under-represented today.   Please take a look at all the amazing work the Geena Davis Institute is doing & creating!https://seejane.org/We sent out a message into the universe that we are open for business, ready to connect.   We do it for pure joy.   It's permission to do and be that self we love.    It's creating the life that you want.  Love x  Love = More LoveCheck 13 Clue4 ALL THINGS MANGO VISIT US HERE..www.greenskinmango.com
