The Next Reel by The Next Reel Film Podcasts

“She doesn't know it yet, but she's hunting us.”How a Virus Spreads Through LanguageThe 2008 Canadian horror film Pontypool, directed by Bruce McDonald and written by Tony Burgess, was inspired by Orson Welles' famous radio broadcast of War of the Worlds. Originally, Burgess envisioned the entire film as a radio play, with the main character Grant Mazzy reading the script accompanied only by a visual of the blue waveform. While this concept wasn't fully realized, it heavily influenced the confined, constrained storyline of the radio station employees trying to make sense of the outbreak consuming their small town. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue the Disease Films series with a conversation about Pontypool.Dissecting the Viral Outbreak in PontypoolOne of the most intriguing aspects of Pontypool is how the horror unfolds through the limited perspective of the radio station employees. As Grant Mazzy, Sydney Briar, and Laurel-Ann Drummond receive increasingly disturbing reports from Ken Loney in the "Sunshine Chopper," the tension builds before the true nature of the viral outbreak is revealed. The film's unique approach to storytelling keeps the audience engaged, even when the explanation for the virus itself may seem a bit far-fetched.Throughout our discussion, we explore the metaphorical implications of a virus that spreads through the English language. As a Canadian film, Pontypool seems to comment on the value of traditionalism and the French language in Ontario, while also critiquing the potentially damaging influence of American shock jock radio. The film's central conceit – that language itself can become contagious and dangerous – resonates even more strongly in today's era of social media and misinformation.Other Highlights from Our ConversationThe wordplay and coincidences in Grant Mazzy's opening monologue, foreshadowing the importance of language in the storyThe debate over whether Grant Mazzy was infected by the virus at the end of the filmThe role of Dr. Mendez as the "book of the vampire," providing exposition and context for the outbreakThe powerful portrayal of Laurel-Ann's deterioration, offering a window into the effects of the virusPontypool may not be a perfect film, but its clever premise and thought-provoking themes make it a worthwhile entry in the Disease Films series. By confining the action to the radio station and relying on reports from outside, the movie creates a sense of claustrophobia and dread that keeps the audience engaged despite the sometimes flimsy explanation for the virus itself. We have a great time talking about it, so check it out then tune in. In this episode of Weaver: Beyond the Numbers, Shane Stewart, Mayur Naik, and Tony Burgess look into direct pay permits, their potential benefits, and the intricacies of maintaining them. As companies explore ways to optimize their tax functions, this conversation sheds light on the potential savings and responsibilities of direct pay permits.Key Points: • Direct Pay Permits allow taxpayers to pay state taxes directly, leading to potential tax savings• Benefits & challenges of obtaining a direct pay permit highlight a significant local tax savings, balanced against stringent qualifications and regular audits• The Implementation process involves strategic vendor selection after acquiring a permit and leveraging expert assistance for compliance and auditsDirect pay permits allow businesses to take control of their tax functions. They can shift the responsibility from vendors to an in-house mechanism, leading to more efficient management of exemptions and, often, considerable local tax savings. For instance, in Texas, businesses can switch from paying taxes based on their vendor's place of business to their own in potential jurisdictions with lower tax rates. Naik highlights, “The most important benefit [of a direct pay permit] is just getting control of your tax function... It helps you manage your exemptions much more efficiently.” Burgess adds on potential savings, “We have taxpayers that they're buying strings of pipe that are $15 to $20 million for multiple wells, and they're getting an instant up to $2 millions of savings just off of a single invoice.”Subscribe and listen to future episodes of Weaver: Beyond the Numbers on Apple Podcasts or Spotify.©2023

In this riveting edition of Weaver: Beyond the Numbers, host Brandon Hayes sits with Weaver's Tony Burgess and Steven Scarborough to discuss sales and use tax. Uncovering the multiple avenues available for businesses that might have overpaid on their taxes, this episode provides insights and actionable advice for companies navigating this complex landscape.Key Points: • Companies often overpay taxes and need methods to rectify these errors• Four approaches to reclaim overpayment are: direct state refunds, vendor refunds, tax return adjustments, and using credits during audits• Some states mandate vendor-first refunds. However, issues like poor vendor relationships can necessitate alternatives like “Assignment of Refund”While many are familiar with the negative consequences companies face when underpaying sales and use taxes, only some are aware of the frequent overpayment situations that businesses encounter. Scarborough outlines four ways companies can address these overpayments, from direct refund claims with the state to leveraging ongoing audits to offset balances.Burgess dives into the intricacies of each method, highlighting the potential challenges and advantages businesses might face. Especially significant is understanding how aggressive a company might want to be when pursuing these overpayments and the various implications of each approach.Scarborough adds, “In most cases, they don't want you just to put it as a credit on your return and let it wash into the current tax. Some states specifically need you to line it out on a section of the return. Some states will have you actually amend the prior period return.” The world of sales and use tax is intricate and layered with complexities. Yet, by being proactive and informed, businesses can confidently navigate this realm. Beginning in early childhood, we all form beliefs – which are simply ideas that seem true and real to us – based on a variety of sources, such as our parents, schooling, friends, and firsthand experiences. Unfortunately, however, some of these beliefs may be harmful, allowing self-doubt to creep in and holding us back from reaching our full potential. Therefore, it's crucial to shift these limiting beliefs — but how can we go about doing so? Tony Burgess, our guest in Episode 143 of The MINDset Game® podcast, has outlined several practical steps for changing beliefs that may be keeping you from reaching your goals. As the co-founder of the Academy of High Achievers (along with his partner, Julie French), Tony has trained and coached business leaders, entrepreneurs, and teams on powerful mental and emotional fitness techniques to help them tap into their full potential. He is also recognized for his expertise in neuro-linguistic programming (NLP), DiSC and Havening techniques, and is the co-author of “Pink Bucket Thinking” and “Beliefs and How to Change Them…for Good!”  In this week's episode, Tony discusses the concept of beliefs (including those that are self-limiting) and walks us through several steps in the belief modification process, including: Getting clear on what exactly you want to achieve when changing your beliefs Conducting a “beliefs audit” to distinguish those that are helpful from those that are no longer serving you  Asking “what if?” questions, and most importantly, using them as a way to expand rather than limit possibilities  Supporting this empowering thought process with cognitive evidence and experiential tactics   To learn more about Tony's techniques by downloading free PDF versions of his books, visit https://www.aha-success.co.uk/beliefs-book/ and https://www.pinkbucketthinking.co.uk/the-book/.  To subscribe to The MINDset Game, visit www.TheMINDsetGame.com.

We've been on hiatus for a bit, but we're back with one of my favorite movies by one of my favorite writers: Pontypool. Tony Burgess adapted the screenplay from his novel, which is titled called Pontypool Changes Everything. Pontypool is kind of a zombie movie, though the mechanism of transmission and specific expression of the contagion is unusual: whatever is making people violently attack each other is transmitted by language.

This week we’re joined once again by queer anthropologist Dr. Jamie Lawson to cover zombie films with a difference. Bill Pullman goes on a quest to find a revolutionary anaesthetic from Haiti in The Serpent and the Rainbow (1988), based on the book by Wade Davis. Next up, Mrs. Frenchie’s cat is missing somewhere in the memetic hellscape of Pontypool (2008), based on the novel by Tony Burgess. And finally a very special young girl is besotted with Gemma Arterton in The Girl with All the Gifts (2016) based on the novel by Mike Carey (includes spoilers for both). Also: Video game connections: Far Cry, Metal Gear & The Last of Us. Clairvius Narcisse. Jesus was not a Zombie. Snow Crash (again). Star Trek: Voyager: spirit animals. Welcome to Night Vale. Pontypool: the BBC radio play. The Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis. Spell. Cerulean blue. Semantic saturation. Lawrence of Arabia (1962). Ophiocordyceps unilateralis. 28 Days Later (2002). George Monbiot. We play a game of “Brains?”

On a related note: A Google image search for Ejecta will yield some pretty interesting results, though NSFW).
