Interview with UNO Art Professor Tony Campbell The journey of being an artist can be highly introspective; a long process of evaluation and revaluation. The resulting pieces of art are a direct result of these internal value structures we create. This was evident during a recent visit to The Mint, home to the New Orleans Jazz museum and a small permanent installation about currency on the ground floor, our ultimate destination. Great to catch up with John Scorse who is now a familiar member of the Sky team as he covers meetings on twelve tracks in the South East and Southern Districts. He talks of his relationship with the local jockeys and trainers. John explains that the sad passing of race caller and form analyst Tony Campbell led him to his long time role. He acknowledges the contribution of his co presenter Chynna Marston, a former jockey and devoted horse lover. John takes us back to childhood days and the inspiration he received from older brother Alan “Groovy” Scorse who was one of Sydney’s best apprentices. He pays tribute to Alan’s achievements as a jockey and trainer. He looks back on his initial apprenticeship to Jack Denham when he was one of an army of junior riders. John reflects on his multifaceted indentureship. Denham was one of five trainers with whom young “Scorsy” spent time. He remembers his first win and his initial city success. John talks of his big decision to go all the way to Perth for a stable retainer with Wally Mitchell. That fortuitous move led him to the best horse he ever rode- the horse to give him a famous Victorian sprint treble. He acknowledges another Gr 1 win on Western Pago, also a member of the Mitchell team. John talks of his wonderful ten year association with trainer Barbara Joseph and a special mare called Ain’t Seen Nothin’. He reflects on his realisation of a “tipper’s dream”- to pick the card at a Canberra meeting a few years ago. John brings us up to date with the progress of his jockey son Patrick who battles weight but has the lion’s share of talent.

With the entirety of pro sports in unprecedented lock-down mode, we offer some respite with a rewind back to the curiously borderline major league Continental Basketball Association (1946-2009), and one of its most successful franchises – the original Albany Patroons (1982-92). Video production firm owner/sports doc filmmaker/Cap City native Brendan Casey (“The Minor League Mecca”) helps us trace the story arc of a team that spent ten memorable seasons punching above its weight both on and off the hardwood. On the court, the Patroons won two CBA titles (1984, 1988), five Eastern Division crowns and complied a league-smashing 50-6 regular season record (28-0 in home games) in its penultimate season – becoming a launching pad for eventual NBA coaching standouts like Phil Jackson, George Karl and Bill Musselman. And a weigh station for notable big-league players past and future such as: Scott Brooks, Tod Murphy, Tony Campbell, Sidney Lowe, Mario Elie, Vincent Askew, and Michael Ray Richardson. In the stands, the Pats routinely squeezed sellout crowds into the city’s 1890s-era Washington Avenue Armory – a reliably intimidating environment where Albany’s rabid fans found themselves intimately part of the action. The team’s quick success at the gate became the aspirational force for the construction of a new region-defining 15,000-seat Knickerbocker Arena (today’s Times Union Center) in 1990 – only to see attendances dwindle and the franchise eventually drown against a backdrop of rising costs and CBA expansion.

Today, we’ll talk to an Independent, a Libertarian and a member of the Green Party about the reasons behind their candidacies, and their views on the future of third parties moving forward.Joining Tom today in Studio A are:David Lashar, a Libertarian running for Congress in Maryland’s Third District.
