Ensure your pool is filled to just below the overflow and have a dry water hose available that can be used from in-house water sources. Washing machine or sink attachments. If water level in the pool gets low and your pump loses prime, trapped water in your above ground equipment and plumbing can freeze and cause damage. 18:30 Buying large amounts of liquid chlorine from big box retailers during post-season price reductions to stock up for next year is a bad idea. Liquid chlorine has a short shelf life. Specialty independent retailers typically receive frequent fresh deliveries and quickly rotate through stock quickly. 25:00 wind moving across the surface of a pool greatly increases evaporation from pools. 27:33 Running a heater during cold spells is extremely hard on the heater due to the excessive condensation. Once the water temperature reaches warm temperatures, the condensation greatly decreases. 35:00 Be familiar with how to emergency winterize your equipment if needed. Get a pro to come out and show you how or make a video on the correct process for your particular pool equipment.

The plaster and tile were redone a couple of years ago before we bought it. It has older equipment that works fine. It does have a spa and a waterfall on the back wall that uses a different pump. My pool cleaner is an older Polaris with it's own pump. I had to put $200 in parts in the cleaner this summer and have the seal replaced. I have 3 teenagers and two golden doodles that use the pool a lot from may through august. We are finishing up a couple upgrades in the house and have a decent budget left over to use on the pool. What are some upgrades you would recommend for my pool? 13:30 Robotic Cleaners are an excellent addition to any swimming pool. Get it scheduled now for the fall 10:50 Black Algae. It is a Cyano-bacteria that exists in natural freshwater sources. Birds, ducks, or other animals or insects can transfer it to your pool. It can also be transferred to your pool by swimming suits worn in a lake and then worn in your pool. How and why is it getting in your pool? Lack of maintenance, adequate sanitizer levels, or circulation can prevent black algae. Black algae have a bio-film protective layer that has to be penetrated before you can kill the cyano-bacteria. Brushing or pressure washing is necessary to penetrate the protective bio film. scrubbing black algae spots with a chlorine tab is a good way to penetrate the biofilm, and applying concentrated chlorine directly onto the cyano-bacteria. BlueRay XL is a mineral purification system that works very wel in, preventing, controlling,g and helps to eliminateg black algae. Many black algaecides have high concentrations of metals. If not monitored and controlled metals can stain your pool surfaces. Culator metal eliminator is the only way I have found to remove metals from pool water effectively. Many "metal control" products only sequester metals. Chlorine breaks down sequestering agents. They are a temporary help, but do not remove the metals from the water. If you have metal stains on your pool surfaces, the stain has to be pulled back into the water before you can remove it.

Cons of remodeling in the spring. Time constraints, weather, and product availability can be an issue. Pros, full staffing and skilled labor is available. 17:20 Issues remodeling a pool in the winter are weather, labor availability, and pushing up against the holidays. Nobody wants their backyard to be a mess during holiday parties or traveling. 20:45 Fall is Frank's preferred time to renovate pools. The weather is manageable, there is less rush to finish before the holiday season, a reasonable labor force, and plenty of time to order and wait on preferred product selections if needed. There is also plenty of time to allow proper plaster curing. Renovation companies may also offer some incentives. 30:40 soapbox time: Frank goes off about plaster/renovation companies not offering proper plaster start-up yet will quickly void warranties if it needs to be done correctly. 34:28 Listener question number 2; When should you order your cover for your swimming pool. Frank recommends ordering leaf and safety covers in late summer. What is the difference between a leaf cover and a safety cover. 43:00 when covering an operational pool you must continue to test and properly treat your water.

AO error on display. Rat chewed through the blower air tube, igniter wiring, and flame sensor wiring. 12:30 what is the term "Shock". Shock is a verb. Shock is the action of quickly increasing the level of sanitizer in water to destroy contaminants and chloramines. The product you use to accomplish this increase is not really a "shock", even though the manufacturers are putting it on the label. Some people have a real problem with the misuse of this term. 15:00 Chloramines are a byproduct of chlorine and contaminants. They are an irritant and are the cause of the obnoxious smell that you may experience at a heavy-use pool or spa. The chlorine combines with contaminants and does not completely oxidize them. You measure chloramines by testing free and total chlorine separately. The difference between the two is your combined chlorine, which is chloramines. To eliminate chloramines using old-school methods, achieve ten times the amount of chloramines in free chlorine. 25:00 heat damage we see in summer. The most damage we see is caused by pumps losing their prime. When pumps run dry, they can get extremely hot and damage the pump, associated plumbing, and valves. Due to this extreme heat, shaft seals on pumps can quickly fail. A bad shaft seal can quickly ruin a pump motor. o-rings on valves and pump lids can be quickly damaged due to this heat. 33:45 How much water should you typically have to add to your pool? Be careful with auto-fills. Auto-fill failure is a common issue. Kona Labs is a great after-market auto-fill system. If you are going to get a cover for your pool, the sooner you need to get it ordered early. Many companies offer early discounts, and the closer to the fall it is, the longer it can take to get the cover ordered and installed.

The control system has to be properly set to the correct salt cell. There are 4 different T Cell sizes. If your controller is reading significantly off from water tests, it may need to be set to the proper cell size. The salt reading is high on the Hayward salt system. Salt system salt readings can vary 400-600 ppm from water test results and still be considered within range. Do not always trust the salt system readings from the salt control system. Test your water. Do not over-salt your pool. 30:00 If you are not qualified to work on electrical work, please do not work on pool lights or other components of electrical system. 30:40 Story of pool owner allowing kids to swim when they were receiving an electrical shock in the pool. High humidity reduces evaporation and water heats faster. Many forms of algae like warmer water. 07:35 Avoid putting flower beds around pools or any landscaping that may wash into the pool. This puts nutrients in the water that algae need to live. 10:35 Phosphates is algae food. 10:50 debris in the water, diluting water with heavy rains, filters getting dirty due to wash-in, all help contribute to algae growth. 11:41 nearby natural water sources, heavy foliage over the pool, close by golf courses, all may contribute nutrients to the pool that feed algae. 12:00 algae is also airborne and can always get into outdoor pools. it may also be introduced by insects and animals coming from natural water sources. 14:15 Tap water may be treated with phosphates 14:48 Rough plaster and surfaces in your pool give algae protection from currents and chemicals. Algae likes calm water. 15:45 Algae can double every three to four hours 15:55 Rough and jagged natural stones in water give algae-protected areas to create a colony. 22:10 brushing is critical in helping to minimize algae. 24:45 footwells in spas are frequently colonized by algae due to poor circulation. 26:50 Poor circulation on tanning ledges, along with water being heated quicker on tanning ledges, promote algae growth. 28:30 Chorine is one of the best algaecides. 03:25 Lower pH makes chlorine more active and effective. This can be problematic in salt pools that tend to run pH up. Algae will cause pH to rise, creating a better environment for the algae. 35:00 good filtration helps control algae 36:30 Chlorine is a good way to eliminate green algae. clean the filter, filter and circulate 24/7 until algae is eradicated. balance water. increase free chlorine to 30 ppm. brush brush brush 42:20 Mustard algae is more difficult to kill than green algae. Sodium bromide can help kill mustard algae, but do not overuse sodium bromide in a chlorine pool. BlueRay XL or metal algaecides are effective with mustard algae. cannot use sodium bromide with salt systems, UV, or ozone. Manage metal levels when using metal-based algaecides. Use CULATOR sequestrants and metal remover to manage metals. 48:20 ammonium sulfates can work to manage algae. Frank is not a fan. It can mess up chlorine residual for extended periods. 50:00 black algae is a cyanobacteria. difficult to kill. can get bad enough that you have to drain and chlorine wash if doable on your pool. scrub with chlorine tab. BlueRay XL helps manage black algae. 52:00 Controlling phosphate levels will help you manage algae. Phosphate removers require more frequent filter cleanings and/or backwashing. 54:20 borates help slow the growth of algae.

It works by detecting distress in the pool area, and then alerts you through various means. For instance, it can sound a 95 decibel alarm within the pool area and in the home. Additionally, it can send notifications to cell phones via the app. If you choose, Camereye can even notify local 911 authorities through a partnership with a home security company. In the unfortunate event of a drowning, Camereye can send pictures to 911 to help them respond better. 19:00 Camereye can count the people in the pool area, measure bather loads, even extremely large numbers of people in the pool area, and recognize the difference of activity from person to person as long as it has a line of sight. 21:40 Unlike Ring like cameras, Camereye does not have to be activated by a measurable amount of movement. Distance from the camera makes no difference with camereye. Camereye constantly monitors the visible area and measures differences in the view frame by frame and in patterns. Even small changes in the camera view are identified. 24:30 Camereye is the only system to meet type A, B, and C pool alarms. Type 'A' and 'B' is pool surface and below surface alarm, type 'C' is outside pool perimeter. 25:18 Camereye meets UL2017 requirements, for door and window sensing 26:30 can distinguish between pets and wild animals 27:00 can distinguish between large numbers of people and each person's activity independently. 27:50 can monitor bather loads, water color and clarity changes, and skim detection for surface debris 29:40 Integrating with Jandy, Pentair, Hayward, and other control systems. They still required proper maintenance and water chemistry. They are an algae-stat and help prevent algae. 23:00 When facing unusually difficult pool environments and situations, a mineral system is a good option for managing the pool. 24:00 If you use mineral systems, you should regularly test the water for metal levels and manage those levels. 26:40 The best solution for removing metals from water is the "CU Lator" metal remover. Follow the instructions closely. 28:00 If metal staining is present in your pool, you may not test high levels of metals in the water because the metals are on the pool surface and not in the water. You must remove the staining and get it back into the solution; then, you can test the levels and remove it from the water. 34:44 Could you make sure you are staying on top of your filter pressures? We just bought the house, and the pool is 3 years old. 3 kids, 3 to 8 years old. Our budget is tighter than expected due to the cost of everything else going up and having to replace a 5-year-old car unexpectedly. I travel a lot and have some spare time, and I wonder if I can manage the pool by doing testing and cleaning every other week. 11:10 Pool maintenance is difficult every other week in the harsh environment of the South. Any effort to save money will be for naught if you have to fight algae repeatedly and issues that come with inadequate pool maintenance. Inconsistent water chemistry alone can easily result in extra costs exceeding any savings hoped for by doing pool maintenance yourself. 15:00 You need to perform the 5 basics of pool maintenance: brushing, removing debris, filtration, circulation, and water chemistry. 21:00 Brushing is critical to controlling algae. Due to the physics of fluids, water movement right next to a surface is much slower than in the water away from the wall. Some algae develop a biofilm to protect themselves. Plaster and other pool surfaces have pits and crevices, fittings extending into the pool around returns, and skimmers create safe havens for algae. Brushing helps remove that biofilm and dramatically helps your pool chemicals do their job. It removes the algae off the wall and gets it into the body of the water, where the pool chemistry and sanitizers will be better. Brushing also helps remove debris, minerals, and organics off the surface, which can help reduce staining and scaling. You should also make sure you brush inside your skimmer throats. 26:27 It is essential to remove debris and dirt from the pool. Dirt and organic debris introduce nutrients into the water that feed algae. Make sure you empty skimmers, cleaner bags, and baskets. 31:19 Filtration removes small particulates from the water. Filters need to be backwashed and/or cleaned regularly as needed. Dirty filters will adversely affect circulation and turnover. Cartridge, DE, and sand filters have advantages, disadvantages, and different maintenance needs. Frank highly recommends replacing the sand media with glass filter media if you have a sand filter. 36:00 Circulation is critical to proper pool maintenance. Adjust the return jets to turn the entire body of water clockwise or counterclockwise to eliminate dead spots in the pool. Frank also recommends a minimum of two turnovers per day. Variable speed pumps allow you to accomplish more turnovers for less energy costs. 44:10 Pool water chemistry. Maintaining the appropriate water balance, as calculated by the Langelier Saturation Index (LSI), and ensuring proper sanitizer levels are crucial in keeping maintenance costs low for a swimming pool. While it is possible for increased chemical usage to overcome deficiencies in the other four basic areas of pool maintenance, doing so will ultimately increase the cost and workload of maintaining the pool. We just bought the house, and the pool is 3 years old. 3 kids, 3 to 8 years old. Our budget is tighter than expected due to the cost of everything else going up and having to replace a 5-year-old car unexpectedly. I travel a lot and have some spare time, and I am wondering if I can manage the pool myself by doing testing and cleaning stuff every other week. 11:10 Every other week, pool maintenance will be difficult in the harsh environment of the south. Any effort to save money will be for naught if you have to fight algae repeatedly and issues that come with inadequate pool maintenance. Inconsistent water chemistry alone can easily result in extra costs that will exceed any savings that were hoped for by doing pool maintenance yourself. Plaster and other pool surfaces have pits and crevices, and fittings extending into the pool around returns, and skimmers create safe havens for algae. Brushing helps remove that biofilm and dramatically helps your pool chemicals do their job. It removes the algae off the wall and gets it into the body of the water, where the pool chemistry and sanitizers will be better. Brushing also helps remove debris, minerals and organics off the surface, which can help reduce staining and scaling. You should also make sure you brush inside your skimmer throats. 26:27 It is essential to remove debris and dirt from the pool. Dirt and organic debris will introduce nutrients into the water that feed algae. Make sure you are emptying skimmers, cleaner bags, and baskets. 31:19 Filtration removes small particulates from the water. Filters need to be back washed and/or cleaned regularly as needed. Dirty filters will adversely affect circulation and turnover. Cartridge, DE, and sand filters have advantages and disadvantages and different maintenance needs. Maintaining the appropriate water balance, as calculated by the Langelier Saturation Index (LSI), and ensuring proper sanitizer levels are crucial in keeping maintenanc costs low for a swimming pool. While it is possible for increased chemical usage to overcome deficiencies in the other four basic areas of pool maintenance, doing so will ultimately increase the cost and workload of maintaining the pool. It is very important that you know the water volume in your pool, properly test your water, properly calculate chemical dosing, and measure doses

This will not only save you money on electricity but also on repair and replacement costs for the cleaner. Automated pool cleaners have many wear items that require replacement with increased use. 08:10—Robotic pool cleaners, like the Polaris Alpha IQ+ and Epic series, are more efficient and effective than traditional pressure-side and suction-style cleaners. They do a good job with dirt and debris. Most models are designed with features that scrub the pool walls, floor, and tile lines. 08:45—According to some studies, a robotic cleaner can save $200-$300 per year compared to an average pressure-side cleaner. Including wear-item parts, the total savings could easily reach $400-$600 per year. Frank suggests investing in a new robotic cleaner instead of spending money on pressure-side cleaners and booster pumps. 12:17- LED lighting is more energy-efficient than traditional incandescent lights, and it offers multi-color options. Leaving the pool lights on can attract insects, which in turn can attract other animals. 18:00- Running waterfalls unnecessarily can be wasteful and contribute to chemical expenses. If the waterfall has a separate pump, it should only be run once or twice a day for 10 to 15 minutes, and when people are there to enjoy it. Disturbing the surface of the pool with water features can result in increased evaporation, which may require additional chemical balancers to maintain the pool properly. 21:24- Systems with waterfalls that run off of the circulation and use a valve to direct water to the waterfall take away from the circulation of the pool. Consider automation to operate the waterfalls only when users are able to enjoy it. 25:10- Variable speed pumps are considered better than single speed pumps in numerous ways. Nowadays, all new pumps exceeding one horsepower are required to be variable speed. By programming a variable speed pump properly to cater to the requirements of your swimming pool, you can significantly reduce electricity costs, improve circulation, pool turnover, filtration, and water chemistry. Utilizing the lower speeds of a variable speed does reduce water flow through the system, but it also exponentially reduces the energy cost to circulate the pool Programming a variable speed pump to utilize lower speeds for longer periods can benefit you in many ways. Many filters have improved filtration when water flows through the poo filter at a lower speed. Chemical feeders such as saltwater chlorine generators can be set at lower percentages because they have more time to produce the necessary chlorine needed to sanitize the pool. Water chemistry can remain more consistent throughout the pool with longer periods of circulation.
During their conversation, Frank and Jacque discuss effective methods for managing the chlorine levels and water chemistry in a pool. Although calcium hardness, total dissolved solids, salt levels in salt pools, stabilizers, and borates do not necessarily need to be tested as frequently, they should still be checked regularly to maintain and manage proper water chemistry. If you encounter any issues such as algae, staining, etc., requiring you to dose products for treatment, you need to test the water frequently before dosing. 13:30 Frank dislikes using untestable chemicals or additives without a measurable effect or concentration. 17:15 When testing the chlorine levels in a pool, it's important to measure both free and total chlorine levels, especially when there is a swimmer load on the pool. Chloramines are formed when chlorine oxidizes ammonia, nitrogen, or carbon-based contaminants in the water. They are disinfection byproducts (DBPs) that should be eliminated by using additional oxidizers. Eliminate chloramines by achieving breakpoint chlorination through additional oxidizers. OTO chlorine tests do not provide information about the amount of combined chlorine. Chloramines can be irritating and are not as effective at oxidizing as pure chlorine. If you only measure the total chlorine levels in your pool or spa, you may get an inaccurate idea of its oxidizing capabilities. It's recommended to measure both free and combined chlorine levels separately for a more accurate reading. 24:25 To effectively manage your pool's chlorine, you need to determine your CYA or stabilizer level. If your pool has borate levels of 40 to 50 ppm, then maintaining 5% of your CYA level in free chlorine consistently is necessary. However, if you do not use borates, you must maintain 7.5% of your CYA level. Note that this percentage can vary if you also use ozone, UV, AOP, or mineral purification systems. 32:20 pH levels have a significant impact on the effectiveness of chlorine. Lower pH increases its effectiveness, while higher pH decreases its effectiveness and reduces the UV protection of CYA on chlorine. Waterfalls and turbulence from returns hitting the surface increase the rate of your pH rise and increase evaporation. If you have a dramatic pH rise from week to week, consider dosing acid for your pH on a more frequent basis. 39:00 It is crucial to conduct thorough testing and accurate calculations when determining the appropriate dosage of chemicals. 44:55 When testing alkalinity, subtract 1/3 of CYA from the test results to get adjusted alkalinity. Use this adjusted value for dosing. 46:20 Manage your CYA properly by taking steps to lower it, using borates to reduce the need for stabilized chlorine, and avoiding overuse of stabilized chlorine. Do not use stabilized chlorine when water temperatures get below 65 degrees in the off-season. 49:00 Hypochlorites, liquid chlorine, and cal hypo are high pH. However, it is not necessary to dose extra acid when using these products. 50:40 It is not recommended to use dichlor shock in trichlor pools as it can cause excessive CYA levels in the pool.

Frank estimates about 30% of pool chemicals used on swimming pools is wasted. The factors that contribute to waste include choosing the wrong chemical, improper testing, and incorrect dosing, both over and under. 07;30 Improper or inadequate pool and filter maintenance will greatly increase the amount of chlorine and balancers required to properly maintain a swimming pool. 09:15 When adding chlorine, it can also affect your balancers. This varies with the type of chlorine you use. Using too much chlorine in your pool can also have a ripple effect on balancer costs. For instance, chlorine tablets have a pH of around 3.0, which can impact your pool's pH levels. Additionally, these tablets typically contain around 50% CYA (cyanuric acid, stabilizer). The stabilizer can accumulate over time and create issues if it becomes too high. 10:45 Proper pool turnover and good circulation are crucial in keeping the costs of chemicals down. Poor circulation can cause inconsistent water chemistry in the pool, leading to more chemicals and labor required to manage the growth of algae colonies that develop in poorly circulated areas. To achieve good circulation, adjust the pool returns to turn the water clockwise or counterclockwise so that the entire body of water moves in one direction. You may need to replace your existing returns with different styles of returns to achieve good circulation.

The heat pump will adjust it's output as needed to maintain a constant temperature. When a system uses slower speeds for lower outputs they operate much more efficiently. These systems also operate at much lower temperatures than other heat pumps in the industry, allowing them to be much more usable from season to season. Most heat pumps will shut down at cooler temperatures around 46 degrees. The Pal Even Heat can operate as low 5 degrees. These heat pumps will also operate as a chiller in the summer time. PAL landscape lighting is the same unit that is used in the pools but it is suitable for dry locations also.
