On this episode of Talking Strange, host Aaron Sagers is joined by Rodney Barnes — the award-winning writer behind Killadelphia, Blacula, The Boondocks, and the new hardcover collection of the Batman vs. Werewolf book, Batman: Full Moon for DC Comics (available May 13). He's also the voice of the successful narrative horror podcast Run, Fool! and will soon be taking on new stories in the 30 Days of Night universe. Barnes discusses how growing up as a Universal Monsters kid helped shape his creative voice and love of horror, and he shares stories of how the tradition of oral storytelling — especially spooky stories told by his grandmother — deeply influenced his perspective and writing. From the gothic shadows of Dracula to the caped crusader battling werewolves, Barnes explores the intersection of pop culture, race, and the supernatural in his work. Whether you're a comic book fan, a lover of monster movies, or someone who grew up hearing stories that made you look twice at the dark, this conversation is for you. Subscribe, rate, and share if you're strange like us. More about Rodney Barnes: Rodney Barnes is an award-winning writer, producer, and comic book creator whose vibrant, emphatic voice has established him as a Hollywood mainstay. His publishing imprint, Zombie Love Studios, is dedicated to storytelling through unique BIPOC perspectives, including Killadelphia—nominated for an Eisner Award, Blacula: Return of the King—an adaptation of the cult horror classic, Monarch—an apocalyptic sci-fi adventure series following a group of Compton school kids in the midst of an alien invasion, and Florence & Normandie—a collaboration with artist/entertainer Xzibit. Additionally, Barnes hosted the Winning Time Podcast, and is host & co-creator of the Run, Fool! podcast—a collaboration between MrBallen, At Will Media, and Campside Media with 800K downloads a month and ranked 38th in true crime fiction podcasts. _______________________________________________________________ The Talking Strange Show with Aaron Sagers is a weekly paranormal pop culture show featuring celebrity and author interviews, as well as experts in all things strange and unexplained. As I launch a new series where I talk to people about their favorite teams ever, I start with my own, the mid-'90s Houston Rockets! Houston native and diehard sports fan KP joins me as we go through everything that led up to those Rockets' teams capturing back-to-back NBA titles!  We start in the ‘70s and ‘80s when a young KP first became a Rockets fan himself! KP talks about the difficulty of even watching the NBA on TV, the underappreciated greatness of Moses Malone, and the drafting of Ralph Sampson. Which current NBA player reminds KP of Ralph? We move on to the Rockets winning a coinflip to draft Hakeem and forming possibly the greatest big man 1-2 punch in the history of the game only to see a potential dynasty derailed by injuries and cocaine! How did a team that upset the Showtime Lakers to face the Celtics in the NBA Finals find itself floundering in NBA purgatory for YEARS? Then, a familiar face returns as the Rockets build out a roster fit for a contender! How did a new system and young players help Hakeem cement himself as the best player in the league? Also, the road from Choke City to Clutch City and a rematch of the 1984 NCAA Finals with a special guest appearance from OJ Simpson.  Getting on top is hard, but staying there is even harder. We talk about the challenges facing Houston as they tried to repeat as NBA champions and how those struggles led to trading for Houston's own Clyde Drexler. Also, a Dream Finals run that featured a Kiss of Death, an MVP showdown with David Robinson, and a young, svelte Shaq! We finish up with how the dynasty ended, Hakeem Olajuwon's place in history, and the cold reality of being a sports fan! The latest episode of "48 Minutes" begins with Bruce Bernstein's analysis of Jaylen Brown's new contract with the Boston Celtics followed by a discussion with Ross Geiger and Michael "World B" Freer on the preseason prognosis for the new look C's. Ross then asks Bruce & World B three questions he's dying to know the answers to. Each panelist will count down their top 5 teams heading into the season, share their 5 favorite all-time players by position, and conclude with a game of "What They Said/What They Meant." We'll even examine the new ESPN/ABC broadcast team of Mike Breen, Doris Burke, and Doc Rivers. ======== 0:00 ... Hello and Welcome ... Ross dedicates show #59 to Rajon Tucker. 1:05 ... Bet OnLine Live commercial read 1:42 ... Opening Comments: Bruce on Jaylen Brown's new Supermax contract with the Celtics and why the franchise did it. 3:47 ... World B defends Kawhi Leonard who was named to a list that nobody would choose to make. 5:28 ... Ross on Thanasis Antetokounmpo's new contract with the Bucks and why it is money well spent. 7:21 ... With Brown's new riches, the addition of Kristaps Porzingis, and Derrick White's increased role, the guys discuss whether the Celtics will be better or worse than they were last year. 11:30 ... The Milwaukee Bucks had the best regular season record last season, but lost in the first round of the playoffs.  Can they improve under rookie coach Adrian Griffin? 15:14 ... Ross asks Bruce and World B if they feel either LeBron James or Anthony Davis are capable of winning another MVP Award. 16:59 ... Our panelists count down their top 5 power teams heading into the season ... there is plenty of disagreement but lots of good analysis.  And definitely some surprising choices. 30:26 ... Just for fun, everyone shares their all time favorite starting fives by position ... Some of the choices will make you scratch your head while others may make you think. 44:11 ... When World B brought up the name of Jerry West, Bruce told the story of seeing the new movie Oppenheimer over the weekend and noting that the aggressive prosecutor in the movie was played by the same actor that portrayed West in the HBO series "Winning Time" about the Showtime Lakers of the 1980s. 45:04 ... Since many are getting tired of "Political Correctness,"  we play a game called "What They Said/What They Meant" where we cut through the BS and translate some of the PC terms that describe certain players. 47:47 ... World B's final thought is on the Orlando Magic and his hope that the upcoming season will bring increased success for this young and talented crew. 49:21 ... Bruce's final thought is on the new ESPN/ABC #1 Broadcast team of Mike Breen, Doris Burke, and Doc Rivers.  Mark Jackson is the odd man out and while he was a successful coach before joining ESPN, his coaching future is sketchy due to possibly being blackballed and we hope he can find a way to remain a vital member of the basketball family. 51:59 ... Ross' final thought is on Philly coach Nick Nurse and his stated objective of turning Paul Reed into the next Pascal Siakam. 52:45 ... Bye and see you all next week TRT 53:02

After years of beatdowns by the Detroit Pistons Bad Boys, Michael Jordan finally won his first NBA title in 1992. Amidst the commotion in the Bulls' locker room - champagne spraying, players and coaches yelling, media swarming - everyone wanted to get a defining image of MJ's triumph, but the Finals MVP was nowhere to be seen. Lakers team photographer and co-creator of NBA Photos Andrew Bernstein was the one who snapped the definitive shot of Jordan crying with the trophy, his father James at his son's side. Such photographic glory was no such thing when a 20-year-old Andrew left UMass at Amherst and headed west to study in the City of Angels. He soon got a gig assisting veteran photogs for Sports Illustrated, and then managed to talk his way into photographing the 1983 All-Star Game for the League on his own, long before photographers had assistants and technicians to help them. He proved his talent and tenacity in the Forum that weekend, and was soon the official lensman for the Lakers, documenting their wins and losses against Larry Bird's Celtics, the Shaq-Kobe-Phil Jackson three-peat, and the two titles Kobe won with Pau Gasol. In this episode, Andrew shares:How he talked his way into the 1983 All-Star Game assignment What role confidence and New Jersey moxie played as he built an unsurpassed portfolio and started NBA Photos in a filing cabinet in his small apartment What he did to make Magic Johnson reprimand him on a Converse commercial setHow he got into Pat Riley's huddle to shoot the Showtime Lakers during timeoutsWhy a shot of Michael Jordan and another of Kobe are his favorites among thousands of photosLearn more about Andrew's fantastic photography on his Instagram feed and listen to his insightful interviews as host of the Legends of Sport podcast.
