With Pope Francis' funeral just hours away, the Vatican says about 250,000 paid their respects to the pontiff in St. Peter's Basilica. Francis was known for his love of those on the margins - immigrants, the poor, those too often shunted aside. CNN's Clarissa Ward talks with a female inmate who met the pope last year, when he came to her prison. She remembers him as a “Pope of the people.” And perspective on this moment from Andrew Sullivan, who has written often, and eloquently about the pontiff, the church, and his own Catholic faith. The United Kingdom wants to turn off the sun. If only there were a half-dozen science fiction stories that told us that was a bad idea. Oh, wait… Clarissa Ward has returned after she faked rescuing a Syrian prisoner. Now she's in the Vatican and we're wondering what she's faking this time. The news media is making it sound like Texas governor Greg Abbott is helping developers build communities that house illegals. But is he really?President Donald Trump is done with Russia/Ukraine shenanigans. The negotiations continue, but it looks like Trump is ready to get this wrapped up. The only question left is whether Putin and Zelensky can play nice.GUEST: Josh Firestine | Bill RichmondLet American Financing help you regain control of your finances.
On this episode of ABL Live, we covered a variety of topics, including CNN journalist Clarissa Ward reporting an obviously fake story of an abandoned prisoner in Syria, James O'Keefe's O'Keefe Media Group exposing a National Security Council advisor, the ongoing issue with the drones over New Jersey and other parts of the United States, flat Earther "Jeranism" going to Alaska to prove his theory correct and being shocked as a result, and much more! --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/anthony-logan/support
Andrew Walworth, Tom Bevan and Carl Cannon discuss whether Trump will force federal workers to end remote work, and a new Emerson Poll shows that 41 percent of Americans under 30 think the murder of healthcare executive Brian Thompson was “acceptable. They also talk about CNN reporter Clarissa Ward's blockbuster video report from a Syrian jail - a report that turned out to be false. The man she helped “free” from the prison has since been identified as a first lieutenant in Syrian air force intelligence with a long history of alleged war crimes. Next, RCP White House correspondent Phil Wegmann and Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) discuss Congress' last minute efforts to pass a continuing budget resolution, an end of the year spending bill that Roy condemns as "a blank check." Roy also provides a behind-the-scenes look at a recent meeting with Elon Musk and members of Congress. And finally, Andrew Walworth talks to Fox News Senior Political Analyst Juan Williams about Trump's agenda and the challenges he will face from Republicans and Democrats during his first 100 days. Also a preview of Williams' latest book, "New Prize for These Eyes: The Rise of America's Second Civil Rights Movement".

“Ukrainian intelligence sent about 20 experienced drone operators and about 150 first-person-view drones to the rebel headquarters in Idlib, Syria, four to five weeks ago to help Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the leading rebel group based there, the knowledgeable sources said. The aid from Kyiv played only a modest role in overthrowing Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Western intelligence sources believe. About the Lecture: This conversation will be devoted to Elena Kostyuchenko's book I Love Russia: Reporting from a Lost Country (2023), “a haunting book of rare courage,” as Clarissa Ward, CNN chief international correspondent, called it. In March 2022, as a correspondent for Russia's last independent newspaper, Novaya Gazeta, Kostyuchenko crossed the border into Ukraine to cover the war. It was her mission to ensure that Russians witnessed the horrors Putin was committing in their name. I Love Russia stitches together reportage from the past fifteen years with personal essays, assembling a kaleidoscopic narrative that Kostyuchenko understands may be the last work from her homeland that she'll publish for a long time—perhaps ever. It exposes the inner workings of an entire nation as it descends into fascism and, inevitably, war. I Love Russia earned several distinctions, including a Best Book of the Year by The New Yorker and TIME, and the Pushkin House Book Prize (London, U.K.). About the Speaker: Elena Kostyuchenko is a Russian journalist; in 2024-2025, she is a Fellow at The Nieman Foundation for Journalism, Harvard University. She was born in Yaroslavl, Russia, in 1987, and she spent seventeen years reporting for Novaya Gazeta, Russia's last major independent newspaper, until it was shut down in the spring of 2022 in response to her reporting from Ukraine after the start of the Russian invasion. She is the author of two books published in Russian, Unwanted on Probation and We Have to Live Here, and is the recipient of the European Press Prize, the Free Media Award, and the Paul Khlebnikov Prize. This event is part of the CREECA lecture series, which is held on Thursdays at 4:00 pm. Coffee, tea, and cookies served starting at 3:45. **This talk was co-sponsored by the UW-Madison School of Journalism and Mass Communication and the Center for Journalism Ethics.**

The conviction marks the first time a president's immediate family member has been found guilty of a crime during their father's term in office, though his crimes predate Joe Biden's tenure as president. After the verdict, Hunter Biden said he was disappointed by the outcome but was "more grateful for the love and support" of his family. President Biden said he accepts the verdict, while supporting his son. "I am the president, but I am also a Dad. Jill and I love our son, and we are so proud of the man he is today." Anderson speaks to two people who've worked with and know President Biden well, CNN political commentators David Axelrod and Kate Bedingfield. Plus, CNN's chief international correspondent Clarissa Ward is granted extraordinary access inside camps in Northern Syria housing women and children captured after ISIS was defeated. We sat down with him to talk about his experience working in the Middle East, what it was like when he returned to Israel late last year, and how journalists get their information. Plus, we ask whether he would ever have thought the events of 7 October were possible and if he is surprised by Israel's response. Club Picks: This article that was written by Adam himself. He talks about it in the podcast because it was published 24 hours after the 7 October attack. He also discusses CNN reporter Clarissa Ward, one of the only reporters who has been able to enter Gaza without an escort. Here is a piece she produced after doing so. We live in a world that is beautiful but brutal. No-one knows that more than war reporter Clarissa Ward, who has spent nearly two decades reporting from front lines around the world: from Syria, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan to Yemen, Ukraine, Israel and Gaza.Within hours of Hamas' terror attack on October 7, Ward traveled to the site of the Tribe of Nova music festival and Be'eri kibbutz massacres. Two months later, Ward and her team visited a UAE-run field hospital in southern Gaza as victims – young and old – poured in to receive treatment from wounds sustained in Israeli strikes.Ward was on the ground in Ukraine as Russia began its invasion in February 2022 and has since spent more than five months crisscrossing the country to cover the now two-year war. Clarissa Ward is recipient of the National Press Club's most esteemed prize, the Fourth Estate Award, and is the author of ‘On All Fronts: The Education of a Journalist' (Penguin Press), a memoir that details her singular career as a conflict reporter and how she has documented the violent remaking of the world from close range.

Ten years ago the podcast industry was in its infancy and the format of Global Dispatches was a bit different than it is today. I would sit down with people who had interesting lives or careers in international affairs and interview them about their life and career, with digressions about the historic foreign policy moments in which their or career intersected. I did around 200 of these longform biographical interviews over the first several years of the podcast. These interviews are mostly behind a paywall at this point, and unlocked for paying subscribers via Apple Podcasts or Spotify. For today, I wanted to bring everyone my 2016 conversation with Clarissa Ward, CNN's Chief International Correspondent. At the time, Clarissa Ward had recently snuck into rebel held territory in Syria. We kick off with a conversation about the mechanics of sneaking into a conflict zone and the risks that war reporting entails. We then have a long conversation about how and why she became a journalist, including her time in Beirut and Baghdad. Get more episodes like this by becoming a premium subscriber. It is the week between Christmas and New Years so I wanted to do something a little different this week and bring you one of my favorite episodes from deep in the archives. Now, I started Global Dispatches ten years ago, in 2013. And back then, aside from the BBC, there weren't really any international affairs and world news podcasts. Today, of course, the landscape is a bit richer and I am happy for that--I don't view other international affaris podcasts as competition, but rather believe that a rising tide lifts all boats so the more the merrier. But ten years ago the podcast industry was in its infancy and the format of Global Dispatches was a bit different than it is today. I would sit down with people who had interesting lives or careers in foreign policy and international affairs and interview them about their life and career, with digressions about the historic foreign policy moments in which their or career intersected. I did around 200 of these longform biographical interviews over the first several years of the podcast. I did so many of these I can't name them all here, but some names you might recognize include George Mitchell, James Stavridis, Joseph Nye, Nick Kristoff, Robin Wright, Fareed Zacharia, Jessica Tuchman Matthews, Dennis Ross, Linda Thomas Greenfield, and so many more. These interviews are mostly behind a paywall at this point, and unlocked for paying subscribers via apple podcasts or Spotify. But for today, I wanted to bring everyone my 2016 conversation with Clarissa Ward. She is CNN's chief international correspondent. At the time, Clarissa Ward had recently snuck into rebel held territory in Syria, including Aleppo. And it was because of her several excursions into Aleppo that she was invited to brief the Security Council later that year. We kick off with a long conversation about the mechanics of sneaking into rebel held territory and the risks that entails. We then have a long conversation about how and why she became a journalist, including her time in Beirut and Baghdad. And I have been thinking about this nearly 8 year old interview because in December Clarissa Ward became one of the first, if only, western journalist to enter Gaza without embeding with the IDF. She filed a harrowing report from a makeshift hospital in southern Gaza, which I will link to in the shownotes of this episode.
A field hospital has been set up by the United Arab Emirates government in Rafah, in southern Gaza, to help treat the sick and injured. CNN Chief International Correspondent Clarissa Ward was able to see their work. CNN is first western media outlet to gain independent access to southern Gaza without an IDF escort. She joins AC360 to share what she saw in the hospital, including a 20-month-old boy who has scratches all over his face, and doesn't even know that his parents and siblings were killed in a strike. Plus, the Iowa caucuses are just a little more than a month away and CNN Chief National Correspondent John King traveled there to speak to Republican voters he's been following for the last five months about former President Trump's lead in the polls. He tells Anderson Cooper why some are hesitant to vote for Trump and what candidate may get their votes. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
CNN's Clarissa Ward and her crew became the first western journalists to enter Gaza independent from Israeli forces since October 7, briefly visiting a 150-bed hospital that was recently constructed in a soccer stadium by the United Arab Emirates in the southern part of the enclave before leaving to report on the footage from Abu Dhabi. Reading by Tim Foley.
The $48 million question is about to be answered for Rudy Giuliani, with a jury set to resume deliberations on the damages he will pay for smearing two Georgia election workers. His lawyer says it could be “the civil equivalent of the death penalty”. Plus, a rare look inside a Gaza field hospital, as CNN's Clarissa Ward reports from the front lines of the humanitarian catastrophe. And, Vladimir Putin takes questions in his first extended news conference since invading Ukraine, appearing to celebrate the US feud over Ukraine aid, and using a deepfake Putin to ask himself about his rumored body doubles. Also, Republican Sen. Ron Johnson's “Examples” of fake Democrat electors falls flat. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
CNN's Clarissa Ward got rare access to a hospital in southern Gaza where the human toll of the Israel-Hamas war was on display. Lawmakers are set to leave Washington without striking a deal to pass additional funding for Israel and Ukraine. The drugmakers behind an experimental cancer treatment report more progress for people with high-risk forms of melanoma. A woman is suing a Boston fertility doctor for allegedly inseminating her mother with his own sperm secretly. Plus, NASA lost contact with one of the longest-operating spacecrafts in history. Scores of brave Palestinian journalists have been bringing the horrors suffered in Gaza to the world. Many of them have lost their lives doing so. Tjada D'Oyen McKenna, the CEO of Mercy Corps, shares insights on growing global food insecurity and deepening inequality. At the end of 2022, one in 10 children worldwide were dealing with malnourishment, the result of the worst hunger crisis the world has faced in a generation. It's an effect of the ricocheting of the triple threat of climate change, geopolitical conflict and Covid-19 through the global economy. Though there's little chance of resolving these issues imminently, community-sourced efforts can play a large role in combating the devastation they bring to people around the world. On a recent trip to Somalia, Tjada D'Oyen McKenna, the chief executive of humanitarian aid organisation, Mercy Corps, saw the real-life impact of these global concerns up close. On stage at BoF VOICES 2022, she discussed that experience, and how people around the world can contribute to positive change. “[Global community] should inspire us to really make small actions, to make a difference and figure out ways in our own lives and in our own lines of work where we can contribute,” said D'Oyen McKenna. This week on The BoF Podcast, D'Oyen McKenna discusses details of her visit to Somalia and the effects food insecurity has on society. Key Insights: D'Oyen McKenna believes we all have a responsibility to engage with and respond to crises around the world, even if the causes are out of our hands. “While none of us can fully control the forces that are shaping our world today, we do get to choose how we represent ourselves in that world,” said D'Oyen McKenna. “But also how we engage with the world that we find, how we respond to it and act in it.” Despite the hardships that citizens of Somalia and other impoverished or conflict-ridden countries face, human determination and grit always shine through. “Even amongst this unimaginable hardship and grief… the power of the human spirit really comes alive,” said D'Oyen McKenna. While the world can feel divided with society frequently grouped under different sub-categories, D'Oyen McKenna argues that we should create a new sense of global community. “In a world of pandemics, climate crises and global hunger there is no us and them, only us.”Additional Resources:BoF VOICES 2022: Finding Optimism in an Unsteady World: From the Ukraine War to the climate crisis to the legacy of the pandemic, speakers including CNN's Clarissa Ward, Mercy Corps' Tjada D'Oyen McKenna, Goldman Sachs' Tim Ingrassia and Google X's former chief business officer Mo Gawdat discussed the uncertainty gripping the world — and why there's cause for hope.To learn more about the BoF Professional Summit: Artificial Intelligence, Web3 and an Inflection Point in Fashion Tech, please click here Hosted on Acast.
