However, fuel and carbon levies will rise, the deficit sits at 4% of GDP, and debt is projected to stabilise at 77.3% of GDP. In other interviews, Motus Chief Executive Officer, Ockert Janse van Rensburg discusses Motus’ improved operational performance, the stronger sales volumes across key markets, and how disciplined strategy execution supported the Group’s robust financial results for the period. U.Chicago economist says tariff 'harms' won't be erased, even if levies stop

Economist Steven Durlauf, a professor at the University of Chicago Harris School of Public Policy, weighs in on the fallout from Friday's Supreme Court decision that the Trump Administration had exceeded its authority in declaring tariffs as being necessary under emergency conditions. While the move put an end to the previously announced tariffs, Durlauf discusses the uncertain benefits of the changes, noting that there are some monies that could flow back to consumers or prices that could decrease, but that most of the impacts will be more on the policy and economy fronts than to the pocketbooks of consumers and the coffers of businesses.  David Trainer, founder and president at New Constructs, says that technology investors could be headed for trouble as he expects the sector to roll over "and take several steps back," bogged down with more balance sheets showing an overload of debt.  He notes that tech stocks have benefitted from momentum investing and buy-the-dips thinking, but if earnings slow down — as he expects — and off-balance sheet debts hit home, the sector will lag other parts of the market. Vijay Marolia, chief investment officer at Regal Point Capital says that he expects GDP numbers to come roaring back from last week's disappointment, noting that the 4%-plus growth he sees for much of the rest of the year is more than just recovering the gross domestic product lost late last year to the government shutdown. He does not expect that growth to be derailed by continuing trade-policy and tariff uncertainty, which reached new heights last week after the Supreme Court decision. Also in "The Week That Is," Vijay discusses his experience playing around on prediction markets and how that has led him to see that those platforms — which most see as a different form of gambling — will have real impacts on investment theory and strategy in the very near future.

Solar support with strings attached: City of Cape Town faces criticism over renewable energy levies

Cape Town is often praised for having one of South Africa’s most progressive residential solar programmes, but the rollout has not been without controversy. Kadri Nassiep, Executive Director of City Electricity at the City of Cape Town, speaks to John Maytham about the City’s approach to encouraging solar uptake. Households can benefit from incentives including cash or bill credits for excess power fed back into the grid and the City has paid millions to residents for their contributions. Some administration fees have been reduced to make solar adoption easier. However, critics argue that additional costs such as feed-in meters and fixed infrastructure charges make participation complicated and expensive, particularly for middle-income households, high-value properties, and those using less municipal electricity. More than 14 000 objections and petitions have been lodged against the City’s tariff structures, with residents saying that fixed charges disproportionately affect disposable income. The City maintains that charges are necessary to cover the cost of pipes, cables, and staff, even as more households generate their own power, highlighting the tension between supporting renewable energy and maintaining municipal infrastructure funding. Presenter John Maytham is an actor and author-turned-talk radio veteran and seasoned journalist. His show serves a round-up of local and international news coupled with the latest in business, sport, traffic and weather. The host’s eclectic interests mean the program often surprises the audience with intriguing book reviews and inspiring interviews profiling artists. A daily highlight is Rapid Fire, just after 5:30pm. CapeTalk fans call in, to stump the presenter with their general knowledge questions. Ryan Bridge: Cut spending, don't levy

Labour's getting flak, especially in Auckland, for their capital gains tax. Rightly so. But National's approach, as is usually the case with centre-right parties, is user-pays. It's a way to get revenue without appearing to tax-grab your starving constituents. Yesterday it was whacking a new tax on our power bills in order to make them cheaper - we hope. Last week they scrapped the full driver licence test but then NZTA came out and said they may need increase fees for the first test and other bits to make up costs. We'll pay tolls to get the roads we want. We're about to get hit with congestions charging. International tourists pay the tourists' tax. Domestic tourists pay to use DOC huts and, more recently, carparks at peak places. Wellington will probably soon get a targeted special rate for pumping their number twos into the Cook Strait. Now, so long as this stuff is ring-fenced, I prefer things are charged this way because if you don't want to use a toll road, use a taxed one. User pays make more sense and is fairer to those who use, and more importantly, those who don't use a particular good or service. But at some point, your household budget is hit with so many fees and charges that you have to stop and ask how long it can continue. It's death by a thousand cuts. And then you ask, can't the government cut wasteful spending elsewhere to cover some of this stuff or give me some back in tax? In case you needed examples of that, this week, Shane Jones' half-billion slush funds would be a good place to start, I would've thought.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This shiny new episode is the first of Season 5, in which Joey and Tyler are addressing the theme of "Thinking in the Spheres". Should Christians automatically support school levies? In this episode of Unmasked, Joey and Tyler examine the proposed Battleground, Washington school levy and ask a deeper question: has the public school system proven itself trustworthy? They discuss the McCleary decision, rising education budgets, declining academic outcomes, administrative bloat, lack of transparency, and growing ideological conflicts between schools and families. From a biblical and civic perspective, they argue that throwing more money at a broken culture will not fix it—and that voting “no” may actually be the most loving option for children, families, and the community. This episode is especially relevant for Christians navigating education, politics, and civic responsibility in today's culture.Title: “More Money, Worse Results?
