Waiting: “Waiting for the fish to bite or waiting for wind to fly a kite. Or waiting around for Friday night or waiting perhaps for their Uncle Jake or a pot to boil or a better break or a string of pearls or a pair of pants or a wig with curls or another chance. Everyone is just waiting.” Is Dr. Seuss right? Are you just waiting? If so, Larry McMurtry had this observation for you, “If you wait, all that happens is that you get older.” You may do well to recall the words of Hazel Lee, “I held a moment in my hand, brilliant as a star, fragile as a flower, a tiny sliver of one hour. I dripped it carelessly, Ah! I didn't know, I held opportunity.” William James' advice is worth pondering since you are just waiting and don't have much to do anyway, “To change one's life: Start immediately. Do it flamboyantly. No exceptions.” So you aren't sure you want to change your life? You are fine with doing nothing? Bill Watterson has found a small glitch with that strategy. “There's never enough time to do all the nothing you want.” Ruth Ann Schabacker said, “Each day comes bearing its own gifts. Untie the ribbons.” However you decide to deal with just waiting and its glitches, Friedrich Nietzsche was nonetheless right, “When one has a great deal to put into it a day has a hundred pockets.” Surely one of those pockets holds a special surprise, just for you. Waisted Potential: Sometimes the truth isn't very complicated. Achieving personal excellence is a case in point. Michael Jordan said, “You have to expect things of yourself before you can do them.” Ralph Waldo Emerson echoed the theme, “Make the most of yourself, for that is all there is of you.” Bruce Barton also understood the key to excellence, “Nothing splendid has ever been achieved except by those who dared believe that something inside of them was superior to circumstance.” Mignon McLaughlin likely took the idea too far toward universal incompetence when he said, “We are all such a waste of our potential, like three-way lamps using one-way bulbs.” Even so, he did have a point. Most people stop far short of exhausting their potential. Thomas Edison was definitely right when he said, “If we all did the things we are capable of doing, we would literally astound ourselves.” There are doubtless many reasons for wasted potential, but “Chiefly the mold of a man's fortune is in his own hands,” as Francis Bacon counseled. “Only as high as I reach can I grow, only as far as I seek can I go, only as deep as I look can I see, only as much as I dream can I be. Brothers and Sisters: There is a Vietnamese Proverb that says, “Brothers and sisters are as close as hands and feet.” Although this isn't universally true, it should be. As Susan Scarf Merrell said, “Our brothers and sisters are there with us from the dawn of our personal stories to the inevitable dusk.” Marian Sandmaier added, “A sibling may be the keeper of one's identity, the only person with the keys to one's unfettered, more fundamental self.” Yes, “Our siblings push buttons that cast us in roles we felt sure we had let go of long ago…. It doesn't seem to matter how much time has elapsed or how far we've traveled.” Despite this truth from Jane Mersky Leder, “Children of the same family, the same blood, with the same first associations and habits, have some means of enjoyment in their power, which no subsequent connections can supply …” Even so, “To the outside world we all grow old. But not to brothers and sisters. We know each other as we always were. We know each other's hearts. We share private family jokes. We remember family feuds and secrets, family griefs and joys. We live outside the touch of time.” A warm “Thank you,” to Clara Ortega for reminding us. If this simple truth slips your mind, Pamela Dugdale is here to refresh your memory, “Siblings are the people we practice on, the people who teach us about fairness and cooperation and kindness and caring - quite ofte...

Would you hand a toddler a picket sign? It's a question that takes center stage as we unpack the daring move by some children's books to nurture the next generation of activists. "A is for Activist" and "Anti-Racist Baby Picture Book" are turning heads and storytimes alike with their bold introduction of social justice themes to the playpen crowd. But is there a line between early education and ideological imposition? We're peeling back the pages on whether these pint-sized primers are appropriate, or if they're fast-tracking kids into political discourse before they can even tie their shoelaces.Meanwhile, we switch gears and tap into the wisdom nestled within the The Way of the Warrior Kid by Jocko Willink Key Points from the Episode:Forget about coddling – this narrative is all about instilling resilience and responsibility in young minds. We share the compelling journey of Mark and his Uncle Jake, as they navigate the challenges of youth with a code of conduct that's as unyielding as it is uplifting. The takeaway is clear: there's power in preaching perseverance and moral fortitude to our kids. And who knows? We adults might just pick up a few tips on crafting a fulfilling life for ourselves and our little ones along the way.PS--we also give you a cameo by our AI robot D-3PO!Other resources: More goodnessGet your FREE Academy Review here!Get our top book recommendations listGet new podcast episodes dropped into your email box easilyWant to leave a review? Season 2, Episode 24: "Uncle Jake's Elderberry Wine"

The Make America Grape Again Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 29, 2021 21:47

For many of us city folk, our first introduction to Elderberry (and its alcoholic potential) was probably the infamous line from Monty Python and the Holy Grail: "Your mother was a hamster, and your father smelled of Elderberries." Yet, as it turns out, berries of the Sambucus genus have been used to make wine (and other alcohols: the blooms of Elderberry are used to make St. Germain.) for hundreds of years. And so it is that we return once more to West Virginia in this episode. James, Megan, and myself have never had any wines made from Elderberry, and Uncle Jake's Elderberry Wine, made by West Virginia Fruit and Berry Company, seemed like a good beginning. Well, there's also the fact that it was one of the first bottles of West Virginia wine I was able to find in a liquor store in neighboring Maryland! Located in Bridgeport, West Virginia, this winery began life as a fruit company, making jams and preserves, then wines, and is now beginning to make bourbon and rye whiskey as well. The owners, Bob & Becky Titchenal, pride themselves on not using high-fructose corn syrup for their jams and preserves. They also mention that their fruit wines would be a great cocktail mixer; something I wish we had thought of while drinking this bottle. Anyway, this wine was a really fascinating experience for us, and we hope you enjoy this episode! We never did find out just who Uncle Jake was, but as long as he wasn't like John Gault, I'm sure I would have enjoyed drinking with him. I will try to get back on my previous upload schedule in July (First and Third Mondays); I truly apologize that uploads have been so erratic. The main problem is that I haven't been able to find the time to edit my backlog of recordings as often as I'd like, and executive function thanks to ADHD isn't helping either...

“Waiting for a train to go or a bus to come, or a plane to go or the mail to come, or the rain to go or the phone to ring, or the snow to snow or waiting around for a Yes or No or waiting for their hair to grow. Everyone is just waiting. Waiting for the fish to bite or waiting for wind to fly a kite or waiting around for Friday night or waiting, perhaps, for their Uncle Jake or a pot to boil, or a Better Break or a string of pearls, or a pair of pants or a wig with curls, or Another Chance. Everyone is just waiting.” - Dr. Seuss So many of us are constantly playing the waiting game in our business. We’re, personally, in the midst of a huge transition on this front. We’ve decided to make the future of our company about agency. Taking action. Figuring it out. Self reliance. (It feels great.) We’ve identified a handful of places where we see folks get stuck in the waiting game in their businesses (many of which we’ve found ourselves in as well): Waiting for the money (to close the round, to win the next pitch competition, to sell out your next program, etc.) Waiting for that perfect person to come and join your team Waiting to be heard or to be acknowledged by others Waiting for the product, program, service to be built or perfected Waiting for the customers and clients to come to you So how do you break out of the waiting game? Take action. Take control back. Be willing to make mistakes and even to fail. Embody the archetype of the empress. Decide what you need to do, own it, and lead. Do what it takes to go out and make it happen. You’re not less than anyone. You’re fully capable. Joy: The Holstee ManifestoHustle: Kaouthar Darmoni and her Tedx Talk

Beating the Odds is the improbable, inspiring autobiography of financial guru, Eddie C. Brown, one of the nation's top stock pickers and money managers. It details how Brown skillfully kept Brown Capital Management afloat through the dot-com bust, 9/11, and the Great Recession. Born to a 13-year-old unwed mother in the rural South, this African American investment whiz created a Baltimore-based financial firm that amassed more than $6 billion under management.Brown writes about the profound heartbreak and disorientation upon the death of his grandmother who was his surrogate mother. He describes how his moonshine-running Uncle Jake subsequently became the dominant adult figure in his life. Brown details how intellectual curiosity, abiding self-belief, hard work, and divine providence helped him earn an electrical engineering degree, become an Army officer, and later a civilian IBM engineer. He left IBM to earn an MBA, followed by investment jobs that prepared him to start his own money management company in 1983.Recorded On: Tuesday, May 10, 2011

What is it about music that makes us get up and boogie? Music is infectious and is the quintessential mood changer. Particularly with children. Join us in the grand finale of Father's Month with special guest LJ Martin (aka Uncle Jake) whose soul mission is to uplift the world and children through the gift of music and poetry. ABOUT OUR SPECIAL GUEST: Referred to as a mix of Dr. Martin Luther King & Dr. Seuss, LJ Martin, a grass root American of African Ancestry was born in Mc Comb, Mississippi, where he grew up, was witness to, and caught up in the social and racial turmoil that consumed America during the civil rights movement of the 50’s and 60’s. During his formative years, he was influenced by Medgar Evers, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and Malcolm X all of whom he met His writing and oratory skills evolved from expressing anger at the demoralizing subjugation of his race, to his poignant dream of helping to shape an inclusive world. Over the years, roads traveled included the March on Washington and eventually to California where he now lives and continues his journey of committed involvement, sharing his original messages with people of all ages, races and faiths about the importance of respecting, accepting and embracing the global community. As UNCLE JAKE shares his own globally inclusive teaching tool stories and songs of all genres as well as tried and proven standards for K-3, at Libraries, Kids Camps, Hospitals and any place children gather. He does it in a style uniquely his own for goodness sake, sharing and caring, growing, listening and learning sake and of course, for funny giggly giggles and smiley smiles. A Poetic Inspirator, he visits middle and upper schools to share poetic fusions to challenge and motivate students not only to stay in school, but to make education a life partner; for education translates to knowledge and knowledge translates to wisdom.
