God uses certain means to bring about salvation, while He is sovereign over all of it. 51% of evangelicals confirm that their parents were the most important or significant influence in their becoming a Christian. 15% credit a spouse or a sibling as the most important influence in them coming to faith. And, only 3% credit a Sunday School teacher, a VBS instructor, or some other ministry in the church, and 4% would credit a concert or a crusade. Dads and Moms are critical to the cultivation of souls in this field. This program includes: 1. The World View in 5 Minutes with Adam McManus (Bloody Mary's first Protestant martyr, U.S. hits hard at militias in Iraq and Syria, Theology professor fired for upholding Biblical sexual ethic) 2. The Black Mind Garden: ReMap Your Mind! Create a Life You Design
SHOW NOTES In this week's Mind ReMapping Moment, I am joined by a good friend, researcher, medical doctor, health coach, teacher, and family man. We are discussing raising empowered black boys and the dad and mom conversations. · How can one embody both the mom and dad energy? · How can we empower our kids to be motivated in setting their goals? · Why do we need to discuss emotional fluency? One can embody both energies: The mom and dad energy. There are various perspectives on how we approach raising our kids. Having that mom and dad energy in the community and the home is essential. We have views on the role of each one and how we step into those powerfully so that we can raise empowered and balanced emotionally intelligent children. Dads can get exhausted, too, like moms are always. Providing scaffolding for our children Our children's capacity to do something conveys the message, and sometimes they cannot do what we ask at that moment. Children do not need to be rushed prematurely to the next stage; running through the moment and trying to reach the next step is antithetical to mindfulness. The ability to pick up clues, speak out about what is happening, and give your kids something else is enormous. Reframing Emotions Sometimes, presence is enough; there is no need for a magic pill or magic word because we do not always have the words. When emotion is present, and we don't always have the words to console, it's just about holding space for the person and making it okay for our kids to have an emotion and knowing that we will be there with them through that emotion. Pastors Doug, Blake, and Kyle return as a team to discuss the following: *please note this episode briefly mentions sexual misconduct, please take care when listening* 1. My question...what does the Bible and subsequent literature based on scripture tell us about our roles as husband/wife, Dad/Mom, man/woman? Society has taught me somewhat poorly and my wife and I are rethinking as in some fundamental ways we can see society's teachings aren't working for couples or families2. There's a lot of questions about homosexuality and it's probably because of Brock needing to step down a couple years ago. I know that we are all on our own journeys and beliefs change as we mature but it's a bit hard hearing three straight men talk about homosexuality. Why not invite a gay person like Brock on the podcast to talk about the other side of the conversation?3.u. I love this church, but I've been thinking about a lot since the news of Bruxy Cavey was released. You talk a lot about the importance of a diverse church and yet the leadership is made up of only white men. Matt Logelin didn't know what he was going to do when his cherished wife, Liz, died hours after giving birth to their baby girl. But something inside led him to her pregnancy blog. And that led Matt on a real-life inspirational journey through grief to finding life after heartache. When a friend urgently texted Florida mom Stacey Philpot about a Facebook post she just had to see, she wasn't sure what to expect. The post showed a teenaged boy standing alone at the flagpole and it seemed as if everyone had something to say about him. And that's when it hit Stacey — she was looking at her son! At the end of every episode, I always call on all the listeners to not let the conversation end with the episode; to take the conversation to various circles and have more meaningful conversations about the topics we discussed. Today, I brought some of those conversations to light with my little circle - my dad - Dr. Rudolf Fombad, and mom - Dr. Grace Fombad. We got to discuss the general consensus about marriage in our African community, which is not based on facts by the way, that compared to our parent's generation (baby boomers and above), we (millennials and below) don't value marriage as much because we get divorced easily. Mom and dad also shared their own perspectives on marital values through the generations based on experience, and we collectively shared some very insightful ideas and observations on various factors that may have influenced the outlook on marriage in our community. I would love to hear from you, about what you think of any of the episodes that have impacted you in one way or the other. Again, let's keep the conversation going and spark more uncomfortable but necessary conversations. Source article mentioned in episode: https://www.goldbergjones-wa.com/divorce/divorce-by-generation/ [00:01 – 04:16] Opening Segment I Introduce our guests, Dad & Mom [04:16 – 34:46] The Generations & How They View Marriage The generations that came before us (GI Generation, Silent Generation, Baby Boomers, Gen X). The early marriage problem The persistency of marriage in the times of our Parents How Laws made it difficult to divorce [34:46 – 59:35] More Discussions on Why Divorce was Uncommon Why younger generations are quick to call it quits on marriage The positive effects of women empowerment Learning to deal with each other weaknesses Tips on sustaining marriage [59:35 - 01:21:39] Final Words and Discussion Deeper tips on sustaining a marriage among Millennials and Gen Zs. The Impact of the extended family on African marriages Getting support from the family Final Words Tweetable Quotes: "Young people must learn how to react to the emotions of their partners in order to find solutions in their marriage." - Dr. Grace Fombad "In the older generation, divorce was a taboo and so most people rather stayed in marriage or faced discrimination after divorcing" - Dr. Radolf Fombad "We have to quickly learn how to help one another to manage the home and keep our marriage." - Anyoh Fombad "Some women feel they're failures for not having a successful marriage and that's wrong. You're valuable with or without marriage." - Anyoh Fombad LEAVE A REVIEW and tell us what you think about the episode so we can continue putting out the best content just for you! We want to share the joys, the struggles, and when sh&t gets real. We are so exited to share and support our fellow special needs moms and dads out there. Often times we as special needs parents feel alone in our journey with our child but we are truly not alone. So many special needs parents are walking on the same path as us. When our both of our kids got diagnosed we felt so alone. We had so many feelings and no one understood what we were going through. We would try to tell others how we felt, but no one truly got it. Until we started meeting families like ours. We hope to offer a safe place where we can share our journeys together. Where we can empower each other to become the best advocates for our children. Today's Speaker: Carey Green If your son came to you and asked, "Dad/Mom, what does it mean to be a man?" What would you tell him? It's important that you have an answer to that question that is informed by what God, the Author of maleness and femaleness thinks on the issue. This session of the podcast highlights a biblical exposition of what it means to be a man... and the lesson is not just for your son. It's for you too.
