You probably know her as the cute blonde that is FANTASTIC on video AND gives INCREDIBLE value to her audience! Through her podcast, newsletter, Youtube, and Instagram, Virginia teaches high-level strategy for business owners who need to connect with their audience. I started following her, interacting, and then jumped into This is Video School recently - her value-driven self guided course on how to create videos that convert to customers! We bonded over a 1:1 call where I divulged that I had said the word panties (GASP) in my very first podcast episode 7 years ago!! "Shew wee buddy" is all I gotta say about that. Virgiania has helped me and countless others use storytelling in their videos to connect with their audience and become the Real You on camera. Listen to our episode together as Virginia shares how she found her business coach and where she gains most of her clients…you may be surprised…or not;) Want "in" to her course, This is Video School? If you are struggling to grow your account on Instagram, it's most likely that you're posting bad content. You're not shadowbanned. Instagram doesn't have your picture hanging in the office taped to a dartboard. It's your content. But don't worry, this is fixable. You just have to own the mistakes you were making and get a better Reel strategy going forward. That's why in the latest episode of This is Virginia Kerr, The Podcast I talk about: The most common mistakes I see in Reels How to overcome them to grow your account All this to say, you have more control than you think you do. Sure, there is an algorithm that has a small influence on who views what. But for the most part, it's up to you; if you adjust the Reels you make and do your best to ensure they are free from the mistakes I discuss, I know you'll have more success with your viewership. In this episode of This is Virginia Kerr, the Podcast we'll take a closer look at The pitfalls of relying too much on market research Alternatives to help you stand out Other ways to connect with your audience As an expert it's your job to give your audience what they want to a degree, balanced with what you know they need. What's the right balance between storytelling and educational content? You don't want your content to be all about you…but you want make sure you're part of your content so they relate to you and remember you. In this episode of This is Virginia Kerr, The Podcast, I go over: Effective ways to utilize storytelling in your branding Things to avoid when sharing bits about your personal life Every post is a chance to reinforce your offer and create connection with your audience, but storytelling is especially effective in this regard. Especially if you're over a certain age, Instagram can feel like a members-only club of 20 somethings all running around with their giant smoothies and 47 snake plants. Does the idea of going live on facebook, IG stories or the new IG Reels freak you out? Today I talk with Virginia Kerr, video and marketing coach and strategist and we talk about the 3 must have tips for showing up on video to build trust in your business. 3 MUST HAVES before you start and to jot down on a post it before you start! 1.) HOOK 2.) 3-5 BULLET POINTS TO TALK ABOUT 3.) CALL TO ACTION Why video? Going face to camera builds trust with your audience and increases the know, like and trust factor that makes them feel like they know you. Are you more likely to buy from a friend? Of course, you are. Storytelling on video Stories matter and allow people to connect. If you can identify the superpower in your story then you can connect more deeply with your audience and find your gift to help other people with your story and gifts. Confidence comes with Repetitive Practice Just start and practice will make you more comfortable. If you feel more confident putting on make up then that's great, but people love looking at the raw and vulnerability of IG stories because it's showing the real you. Be seen as a resource Share something that you DON'T sell and recommend in your stories once a day. This will help you to be seen as a resource and not like a salesman. You can talk about your product with confidence, but find a happy medium and recommend other things that you don't sell, but they could benefit from it. Where should I start if I'm afraid of video? Start with IG stories face to camera. It's only 15 second clips that you can use filters and stickers and GIFs to make it fun or even questions and tips that you can offer. You have the ability to delete a story if you mess up, and knowing that it's only out there for 24 hours helps you to feel more comfortable sharing. Why would people care to watch my video? Who would watch this? People need and crave connection. They want to be entertained, learn free tips, and feel connected to you. Do's and Don't of Facebook Lives Don't do this on video Don't introduce yourself on the video Don't wait for people to join your LIVES before you start. Don't say "Happy Friday, or other greetings" DO this on video DO start with a hook right away (Ex: 3 must have tips to help you show up on video) DO have high energy and be excited. DO talk directly to your avatar. Assume they know you and are consuming your content. DO include a Call to Action at the end. Do you want her to answer a poll DO be prepared. Know your hook, an outline of what you want to share and the call to action. DO ask them to do things so that they will comment and answer you. This ups your engagement and boosts your posts. This makes it a two way conversation and market research. You can get market research. go into the DMs and get their exact language. What are Reels? Reels is multiple shot or edits that can be combined with text bubbles etc. You can use other apps like inshot, videoleap, or videoshot video and upload it to reels so you can repurpose it. If you inspire, entertain or teach on reels then on the explorer tab you can be found by people who otherwise may not have found you. Up for a challenge? If you’re from the St. Louis area, you’ve probably seen Virginia Kerr on TV. She used to be a reporter, news anchor, and lifestyle host. Jill Devine always thought Virginia was full of energy, positivity, and happiness based on what she saw from Virginia on TV. Behind the camera, Virginia was none of those things. Virginia came from a family that wasn’t great with communication. There were a lot of negative life events Virginia faced, so she turned towards food to eat her feelings away. It was at the age of 13 where she realized she was binge eating. She got help for the binge eating, but when she got older, she started drinking to cope with her feelings. It got to the point where she would drink herself to sleep and wake up every morning at 3am with negative thoughts. Those thoughts told her she was disgusting, and she was worthless. She never knew what it felt like to be happy and she had enough. In November 2018, she stopped drinking. Once Virginia was sober, she began to recognize her worth and value. Through her television career, she learned a lot about video marketing and sales and she’s taken that knowledge to create a video coaching business. Video on social media is the quickest way to get someone to know you and to build trust and Virginia teaches people how to do this. In this week’s episode, you will hear Virginia talk about her demons in further detail. You will also hear the advice she has for anyone struggling with an addiction and what she wished she would have had access to when she first realized she had a problem. #010 - Kerry's guest, Virginia Kerr (@thisisvirginiakerr on Instagram) is a former TV anchor-turned-entrepreneur who is rocking Instagram by applying effective TV techniques! In this episode, Virginia talks about how to use the four different TV shows you can create on your Instagram account (using Feed, Stories, IGTV and Live) to post the same general content topic in four different ways! That means you can be on all the "channels" without having to create completely different content for each one. She talks about how this works in TV news for different shows - it's the same concept - where you might cover the same topic or story in different newscasts, but you do it with a different emphasis each time. You make the assumption that the viewer has seen a previous version of the story, so you give it a different treatment, but at the same time you also assume the viewer has NOT seen an earlier version of the story, so you make sure that you cover the basics. Virginia also has a great hack that allows you to put a title on your Instagram Live...even though Instagram doesn't really offer that feature yet! You will love Virginia's energy and enthusiasm - she's a super inspiring person of faith - as well as her deeply personal story of leaving the TV anchor business after 20 years and overcoming some big obstacles and coping-struggles that blocked her from the joy and success she is experiencing today helping women entrepreneurs use video effectively. Virginia is a wiz at video and helping you build on-camera confidence, and at the time of this posting, she's launching her "5-Day IGTV Video Challenge" (starts March 9, 2020) that is a great way for YOU to start integrating video into your business! Hey my friends, today I am introducing you to my friend, Virginia Kerr. Virginia is well known around the St. Louis area as a television news anchor and the host of a show called The Thread St. Louis. Virginia also just outed herself on Instagram as struggling with alcohol. I met Virginia a few years back while working on her show. We did a segment together and had a blast. We laughed, cut up and I think we actually got yelled at by the producer to get back to work! When I drove home that day I remember thinking she definitely had it all together. A successful career in television. A happy marriage. An amazing healthy, son. One evening as I was scrolling through Instagram, I came across one of her posts. It was November 8th, 2018. She just shared she drank two bottles a night of Chardonnay. And she didn’t want to do it anymore. Honestly, I was shocked. Not that she drank two bottles of wine, but that she was “outing” herself on Instagram. And, asked us to hold her accountable! As I continued to follow her journey, I fell more in love with her. I already knew she was fun and had a wicked sense of humor. Now I was discovering her inner strength. Her resolve to love herself. Her honesty and unapologetic candor about her inner demons. I found her insta-diary fascinating. Some of the strategies she uses to stay sober I had used in saving my marriage. Some of the trauma she had to work through regarding her childhood were similar to my own. And, her courage to be what she was created to be, infectious. And today, she is sharing her story with us. Put your listening ears on, chica’s, this episode is loaded with amazingness! We take a deep dive into the following areas: - How binge eating turned into binge drinking. - Therapy and how it changed her life. - The debilitating effect of shame. - Toxic relationships and how she made the change. - How we both relate to Eminem (yes, the artist!) Remember, wellness isn’t just about moving your body, it’s also about changing your mindset. Love you, Lors xoxo P.S. Everyone who struggles with addiction feels the burden of hiding a secret, but that feeling can become greatly exaggerated for people in the public eye. As a news anchor and tv host, Virgina felt she was living a double life as someone who looked perfectly pulled together on screen despite battling the daily compulsion to drink. She recently celebrated 100 days alcohol free and is experiencing life with a new level of clarity and understanding. https://thisisvirginiakerrblog.com/ Instagram @thisisvirginiakerr
Virginia originally pursued journalism out of desperation. It wasn't out of noble efforts but instead to feed something that was missing inside of her. She says that she was a lost person who felt like she was worth nothing. She felt like if she could just be on television, then she would prove to herself that she felt like "a somebody”. Through her battle with an eating disorder, her connection with mental illness, and her miscarriage, Virgina shares with us God’s provision in her life. Learn of His love as we talk about true identity and no longer trying to hide or numb the pain that life might bring. Virginia Kerr is well known around the St. Louis area as a television news anchor. Most recently Virginia has founded and fueled an amazing television show called The Thread. A show that's dedicated to sharing the light and kingdom work of St. Louis. It highlights the hearts and efforts of activities, events, and individuals who want to make the world a better place. The Thread celebrates these people and organizations by sharing and inviting others to be a part of it. The purpose of the show is to help people know God better and encourage people to see their purpose in life by showcasing others who are already walking in that role. Tim was an alcoholic starting in 8th grade. In our time together, Tim gives us insight into why he chose alcohol as a coping mechanism and how it was masking who he really was. God worked a miracle for Tim through a family member that also struggled with alcoholism. His favorite uncle had just completed two years of sobriety and became a mentor to him. God provided many individuals, including his dad, along the way that helped him have a real heart change away from alcohol and toward Christ. Tim fully embraces the idea of Constantly Under Construction as he says that God is never done with him. God continues to work through him. The pull to work in ministry was a seed that was planted many many years before he became a pastor at a church. Tim knew that he was already in ministry when he worked on TV news, but God told him it was time to step away. And in that, he saw God stripping away things that weren’t meant to be part of his life and God's plan. And it was a process of finding his identity in Christ. When it comes to identity, Tim reminds us that God works in our lives when we step into who we really are. Walking into the role as pastor was such an amazing process because Tim was able to come with confidence because of the work that God had been continually doing in his life. Tim Ezell is a familiar face if you live in St Louis. As a TV journalist, he made us laugh for nearly 20 years amidst the heavy and necessary stories we catch on the early morning news. Tim has always been associated with levity and has been a bright spot to our mornings. We’ve watched him use goofy tactics, physical comedy, props and costumes to share a fun and light aspect to tv news. Tim now flourishes in his God-given identity with his own television show, The Thread. Which he makes very very clear that it would never have been created without the dream, vision, and follow through of his friend and fellow show creator and producer, Virginia Kerr. I’m so thrilled for you to hear Tim’s account about how God shaped him through his journey from alcoholic teen, to tv news anchor, becoming a pastor, and then BACK to television to complete a bigger ministry than Tim (and Virginia) has ever done before. The Thread gives the gospel message at each and every episode and the mission and message of The Thread can be summed up in the verse John 13:34- "As I have loved you, love one another." I can’t wait for you to hear of the big dreams Tim has about the show! It’s his goal to tangibly reach individuals by means of live events and functions. Get ready to want to take part in all the fun and joy Tim wants to inspire in those who participate in The Thread! Some things you may not know: The Thread is a show that is independent of FOX television network. Because people see Tim back on TV, they assume the show is funded by FOX. There have been moments where the show has needed financial and moral support. Tim has had bright moments where he sees God telling him that the show is doing work and there is fruit in his efforts. However, the show is funded independently and looks to outside support for viewers and donations. As a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, the show needs support. Go to the website to support financially. And connect on Facebook and Instagram to interact with the show and it’s episodes. The Thread will surely connect individuals and create a whole new level of community like we’ve never seen before!
