Ep 176: Cannes Film Festival 2024, we review Bird, Megalopolis, The Girl With the Needle, and more This episode of Girls On Film comes from Cannes, where Anna Smith speaks to Jane Crowther and Wendy Mitchell about their Film Festival highlights. Anna hosts the very first Girls On Film party at The Members Club, and speaks to some of the guests about their work at the festival and which films they've enjoyed. First up, Anna takes us through the soundscape of Cannes and walks the red carpet for Emilia Perez. Anna joins the Women in Film and TV yacht party, to hear CEO Katie Bailiff's speech, before heading to MUBI's beach party. It's a tough job, but someone's gotta do it. Then Anna invites film journalists Jane Crowther and Wendy Mitchell to discuss the films they've seen in Cannes so far, which include Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, Megalopolis, The Girl With the Needle and On Becoming a Guinea Fowl, as well as Andrea Arnold's Bird, Wild Diamond, and feminist comedy horror The Balconettes. Jane talks about her new role as editor-in-chief of Hollywood Authentic, a new luxury, glossy magazine, and Wendy discusses her portfolio of projects including the upcoming Sundance London, and San Sebastian Film Festivals. Wendy and Anna are both on the Palm Dog judging panel for Best Canine on screen, so naturally the conversation turns to the various dogs in films at Cannes. They also discuss the impact of #MeToo and Time's Up, and recent changes at the Cannes Film Festival, including the arrival of signs stating that harassment won't be tolerated. Finally, we join Anna at The Members Club for Girls On Film's own Cannes party. We hear from a few of the guests, who include Akua Gyamfi of The British Blacklist and Dame Heather Rabbats of Time's Up, who talk about the launch of their new initiative around appropriate hair and makeup for diverse requirements on set. Anna also speaks to Nicole Weis of IFC Films, producer and comedienne Ronni Ancona, director Rachel Ramsay, and The Girl With the Needle co-writer Line Langebek Knudsen, and our wonderful supporter, IMDb founder Col Needham. With special thanks to our sponsors for the party, Rebecca Hawkes at Elstree Studios, HLA Agency, Col Needham at IMDb, and JoJo Dye at JJD Consulting. And with gratitude to our lovely partners for this episode, Vanessa Smith and Peter Brewer, for their continuing support of the podcast. Well I Know Now with Pippa Kelly

Wendy Mitchell is quite simply one of the most impressive people I have ever met. Diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease nine years ago at the age of 58, after an initial slump into depression, Wendy has since devoted her time and precious energy to raising awareness of dementia, frequently appearing on our broadcast media – she's a familiar face on the Breakfast Time sofas – and speaking at major conferences. Wendy's blog, Which Me Am I Today remains one of my favourite reads and, in writing it, she's created her own paper memory, something that has enabled her to produce two Sunday Times best-selling books about dementia, Somebody I Used to Know and What I Wish People Knew About Dementia – both written in collaboration with journalist Anna Wharton. This summer, Wendy's third book, One Last Thing, was published to great acclaim. As with all Wendy's writings, it comes from the heart and is honest, insightful and highly readable. Which, given its subject matter, is no mean feat. For One Last Thing deals with that most feared of subjects: death and dying. Though, as Wendy says herself, since her dementia diagnosis, she doesn't fear anything anymore, including death. In her book Wendy turns her mind to the serious matter of her future – which, as it does for all of us, involves her death – in order that she may fully appreciate living now. She explores this knotty, difficult topic through conversations with different people, including friends living with dementia and experts in various aspects of end of life, such as the legal practicalities and medical choices here in the UK.Often, she turns the spotlight onto herself: “As dementia dilutes my personhood,” she writes, “I cling to those things that make me who I am – a mum, a blogger, a walker and a photographer. For me, once those parts of me have been taken by this cruel disease, I'll have lost my personhood and would prefer death to an existence of snapshots of joy, as the time spent in confusion would far outnumber those moments”. Useful contacts:Wendy's blog can be found at https://whichmeamitoday.wordpress.com/ and her latest book, One Last Thing, How to Live With The End In Mind, published by Bloomsbury, is available on AmazonDiscover more about advance care planning advocate Clare Fuller and her services at https://speakforme.co.uk/My Future Care Handbook, an interactive book that helps people plan for later life: https://myfuturecare.org/ Hosted on Acast. How can we help people with dementia? Kim Chakanetsa talks to two women from Singapore and the UK about how they've adapted to living with the condition and why they now want to help others understand dementia better. Wendy Mitchell was diagnosed with young onset dementia at the age of 58. She wrote a bestselling memoir, Somebody I Used to Know about the slow realisation that she was changing, and the adaptations she needed to make to her life to cope. She's a vocal advocate for people with Alzheimer's and other dementia and promotes better understanding and care. Surprised by the lack of information available to her and her family, she's written a second book, What I Wish People Knew About Dementia. Emily Ong is from East Malaysia but now lives in Singapore. She first noticed something was wrong when she forgot how to make French toast, but it took her years to get a proper diagnosis for young onset dementia. Now 54 years old, she advocates for greater understanding of the disease and belongs to the Voices for Hope programme, helping people who are newly diagnosed or already have dementia. She says it's rare for Asians to speak about dementia and it's important to be open and spread understanding. Produced by Jane Thurlow (Image: (L) Wendy Mitchell, credit Jo Hanley. Full disclosure, today's guest Wendy Mitchell is one of my all-time favourite people. She is positive, witty, resilient, genuine and wise. She is the author of Somebody I Used To Know, a ground-breaking memoir that was selected as Radio 4's Book of the Week, chosen as one of the Times' newspaper's books of the year, and made it onto the Sunday Times best-seller list. She is also living with dementia.Seven years ago at the age of 58 Wendy, a former NHS manager, was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. In a classic stroke of down-to-earth genius, she started a daily blog to serve as her memory. It is called, cleverly, Which Me Am I Today, and it is insightful, compelling and beautifully illustrated with her own photographs. She loathes her dementia for stealing away everything that once made her who she was and for the havoc it will wreak on her two adult daughters' lives, but she also recognises that it has given her a rare perspective on the world. She has capitalised on this as a first-class dementia champion, her new life becoming as busy, in different ways, as the life she used to lead. Pre-pandemic Wendy was to be found travelling the country by rail, bringing her trademark humour and insights to primetime television and radio shows, conferences and colleges. As with all the true greats, whatever their field, Wendy makes it seem easy. In truth, each cab and train journey involves meticulous preparation, military timing and countless Ipad reminders. And as she once discovered, she can never stop pushing herself on. To stop, to take time off, is to let Alzheimer's win. So Wendy Mitchell keeps on writing, her camera keeps clicking as she trundles round her village or, as she's recently started doing again, traversing the country, opening all our eyes to what dementia is, and how it's possible to live a successful and rewarding life with it. On today's show, do dogs understand time and what is behind their internal clock? Then we take time out to celebrate the canine stars of the big screen with author and film journalist Wendy Mitchell. Can dogs tell the time? If you ever get the feeling your dog knows what time it is, you're not alone. But without telling the time in the literal sense, how do they seemingly know when it's time to eat, time to sleep or time to play fetch? The answer isn't straight forward, in fact there's more than one reason at play. We take a look at this phenomenon and some of the factors that could have you believing your dog is secretly wearing a watch. Do dogs have a concept of time? Dogs that know when their owners are coming home Wendy Mitchell, Author of Citizen Canine: Dogs in the Movies As a film industry insider and journalist, Wendy Mitchell has a unique perspective on the business. As we begin to emerge from lockdown, what are the similarities with the ‘Roaring 20s’ 100 years ago when Britain, having survived the Spanish Flu and the Great War, became a hedonistic playground? Will this time create a need for crowds, parties, touch, and an urge to ‘get out and enjoy life’? Jessica Fellowes, author of Mitford Murders crime series and companion books to the television series Downton Abbey, describes the Bright Young Things who were the influencers of their day, ‘Bachelor Girls’ who no longer needed to be married to enjoy independence, and gives parallels with how technology transformed lifestyles – from the labour saving devices that freed women from endless housework, to the internet which enables women to work from home today. The public’s understanding of dementia is generally very poor and the message we receive about it are overwhelmingly negative. Could fiction be the answer to showing a more rounded and factual portrayal? Emma Barnett talks to Wendy Mitchell, Anna Wharton and Professor Jan Oyebode. Throughout his career Jason has relentlessly innovated and defied collective wisdom on the business of filmmaking. His low budget approach is much more than about 'keeping costs down', it's about fundamentally reducing risk and retaining control. And the result of this? For Jason it has meant staying INDEPENDENT, empowering artists (like Damien Chazelle, Spike Lee and Jordan Peele) and building a global direct to consumer and industry brand. In this very special interview with journalist Wendy Mitchell, Jason discusses his work and the future of the film and television business. It was recorded in November 2020 for the Future of Film Summit.

Subscribe to Modern Selling on the App of Your Choice! The average tenure of a sales rep is 15 months and according to a report by DePaul University replacing a sales rep costs organizations $97,690 on average. That’s why when building sales teams, sales leaders must know how to attract, develop and retain top talent. My guest in this episode of the Modern Selling Podcast is Wendy Mitchell-Covington, National Vice President of Sales Success at TriNet. She is a strategist who has successfully built and scaled sales organizations. Throughout an extensive sales and leadership career, she has been committed to attracting, developing and retaining top talent. She believes top performing sales professionals are the engine that drive every flourishing company. Listen to this episode as Wendy shares her experience building sales teams and tips on how to build your own successful team. Helping Sales Reps Through Tough Times Many sellers are finding it hard to stay engaged and maintain productivity during the current health crisis. Not only have their working conditions changed but in many instances their target customer is not buying. Wendy says that it’s important for sales leaders to understand what’s going on with their team. Are they isolated at home and feeling depressed? Or are they trying to homeschool their kids while prospecting and attending virtual meetings? Once sales leaders understand the daily reality of their team, they can take actions to alleviate their pain. For example, at Trinet, they implemented a very detailed communication plan to address these issues and provide help. As a result, they established virtual meditation and exercise sessions, and began celebrating small wins more often to keep sellers motivated. Lessons in Building Sales Teams Wendy explains that there are three key ingredients sales leaders must have to build a great sales team: Attract top talent. Develop top talent. Retain top talent. To attract top talent leaders must identify the characteristics and past experiences required for success in the role they’re hiring for, whether it’s B2B or B2C experience, long sales cycles or transactional cycles, in-person selling or remote selling -- whatever the needs are for your organization. Wendy says one of the most important skills a sales leader needs is knowing how to conduct behavioral-based interviews. Listen as Wendy shares three fundamental questions you must ask every candidate. Once you hire top talent you must develop and retain them, starting from day one. Wendy says sales leaders must challenge their sellers constantly so they won’t feel stuck. You can do this by working together on a development plan and helping them improve their craft every day. Top talent will stay with your company if they feel they’re part of something bigger than themselves, so communicate your vision continuously. And, of course, you must be financially competitive if you want to retain them. Teach your Sellers to Think Like a CEO One of the keys to make your team feel part of something bigger than themselves is to teach them to think like a CEO. That means helping them understand and feel how they fit within the organization, and the impact and contribution of their work. Listen to my conversation with Wendy as we share some real life stories on how we accomplished this with our sellers and more tips about building your sales team.
