Tameka and Alex kick off the conversation catching us up on their golf game—along with Justin giving us a few priceless tips—before doing a deep dive into their five best tips that every beginner golfer needs to know! Key Takeaways (19:00) It's all about the short game. It's true: Nobody started playing golf because they like to putt and chip. But working on your short game builds a strong foundation, over time, for your full swing. (25:57) Most people aren't that good. As with starting anything new, it's easy to be intimidated by those who have more experience than you. At the beginning, everyone looks like a PGA Tour player. On the other hand, in Tori's words, “I can verify that balls are not going far and they're going cock-eyed. You're not the only one!” Justin concurs, saying, “No matter what level you are, there is some really bad golf to be played out there, even on the highest level.” (30:57) When in doubt, ask. No question is stupid in this game. Ask about the rules. Ask about etiquette. Ask about the dress code on certain courses. Ask where the range balls are. Ask where the first tee is. These are all normal questions, and everyone from your foursome to the pro shop staff to the bag room staff will be more than happy to answer any of them. (38:02) Nobody cares about your game. Rather, pace of play is number one. This is easier said than done, of course. But simply being aware about pace of play will help speed up your game. Avoid getting lost in conversation and focus on keeping up with the group in front of you. (44:41) Just pick it up. Nobody has been banned from the game for making a single mistake. Failing to adhere to the dress code the first time around is a lesson to keep in mind for next time. Be open to learning and making mistakes, and you will improve as a golfer. When I heard about this woman who runs a healing centre offering touch starvation and cuddle therapy for men out of her own home, I knew I had to invite her on this podcast. Her name is Kat. And not only is her own story super inspiring, but her approach to helping men and couples heal from symptoms of touch starvation - lack of intimate, physical contact with others - is remarkable. Physical intimacy in our relationships (outside of sex) is vital for our mental, emotional and physical health. But in a society where many men still suppress or balk at their need for physical and emotional intimacy, therapy involving gentle touching and platonic cuddling is catching on. And for good reason, as you're about to hear - it works. In this episode, Kat and I are talking about: Why men, in particular, often suffer from touch starvation Why touch and physical intimacy outside of sex is so important in a relationship How sexually active relationships can still lack physical intimacy Symptoms and effects of touch starvation How a cuddle therapy session works Effects and benefits of cuddle therapy Masculine stigmas that cause many men to suffer Why Kat focuses her healing therapy mainly on men Why Kat chose to focus on helping men heal, despite being a victim of abuse by a man CONNECT WITH EMILY Book a private coaching call with Emily to work together. When it comes to relationships, I see two major issues with fixating on “red flags”: they're often unfairly judgemental, and can get in the way of the compassion and forgiveness needed to grow and move on - be it in your current relationship or your next one. So here, I want to reframe how we look at - or look back at - these relationship warning signs. When we shift our focus from the red flag itself to the patterns and awareness level we each bring to a relationship, we can have a much easier and healthier time forgiving and continuing our innate yearning for love. In this episode, we're talking about: Why we need to pay attention to patterns in our relationships vs. red flags How to not give up your power in seeking help Why we struggle to forgive ourselves for missing red flags The difference between unconscious incompetence and conscious incompetence Why compassion is such a huge factor in forgiveness Why to stop focusing on red flags How to best re-enter the dating world after a breakup CONNECT WITH EMILY Book a private coaching call with Emily to work together. “What's hard about being a man?” This is a question I've been asking a lot of (those who identify as) men lately. And while so many of our modern conversations are rightfully focused on helping marginalized communities heal and be supported after generations of oppression, men are often under-supported in the realm of mental and emotional health, and the results impact the entire collective. This is why people like James Walsham “The Compassionate Man” and others have begun creating platforms to help men shake off generations of outdated and toxic paradigms around masculinity and societal expectations to have somewhere to do the work of self-discovery, expanding their worldviews, opening up emotionally, strengthening their relationships and growing as humans. In this episode, James and I are talking about: Why men often struggle to open up emotionally Why men often don't give compliments to other men How women can better understand and support men How to deal with sexual shame and guilt Exploring sexual fantasies, how sex parties work and the safety measures involved Why social media is a great tool for learning and joining conversations Where men can find men's groups, men's circles and men's communities CONNECT WITH EMILY Book a private coaching call with Emily to work together. The root cause of every argument or disagreement in a relationship almost always goes deeper than what triggers the argument in the first place. For instance, if there's a breakdown over the dishes not being done or a messy house, it's never really about chores. In this quick episode, I'm going to explain how to get to the root cause by using one simple question to ask both yourself and them. You'll be shocked at what arises and how it helps you solve problems and open up communication. Have a listen, try it out and please let me know how it works for your relationship! A love language is how one expresses and receives love through actions or words. The term was popularly coined in the book “The 5 Love Languages” by Gary Chapman. But I want to take that list way deeper. Because to me, how we express love also includes some even smaller, but vastly underrated actions, inactions (I'll explain) and levels of vulnerability and openness that are necessary for building better relationships. So in this episode, I'm running down my list of “12 Underrated Love Languages That Go A Long Way” and why we need to pay attention to these small, yet massive things: Ask genuine questions with curiosity Active listening & slowing down speech “I was thinking of you.” Laughter and playfulness Loyalty Presence Open, honest communication Choose people who choose you back Protective instincts Warmth, sweetness and sense of ease Take your “armour” off Create openings I'll explain each in detail - these will completely revolutionize your relationships! Also, I'd love to hear any love languages you would add to this list. How do YOU show and receive love? DM me or email me (contacts below). My dear friend Claire Falconer is a literal ray of sunshine and one of the most knowledgeable humans I've come across when it comes to helping women (and couples) get the most out of their hormones and menstrual cycles. Once we deeply understand the phases and signals of a woman's cycle, we can then leverage it not just for conception and pregnancy, but for every aspect of women's daily lives, health and relationships. It starts with busting the modern myths and stigmas around a woman's cycle, and instead working with it to vastly improve physical health, emotional health, fitness & weight loss, sleep quality, energy level, and of course, everything to do with preconception, pregnancy and postpartum health. Claire Falconer is a personal trainer, yoga teacher and health coach who has worked with hundreds of clients all over the world, specializing in women's health, especially hormonal health, preconception, pregnancy and post natal women. In this episode, we're talking about: How men's and women's hormonal cycles are different How a woman's cycle is an indicator of good or poor health The importance of hormone balance How to work with your hormones The phases of a woman's cycle and how to embrace its energetic highs and lows How menstrual cycles affect energy levels, weight loss and sleep quality How to increase chance of conception and pregnancy Tips for a healthier pregnancy How to plan workouts and diet around your cycle Effects of birth control Facts about premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and how to better control symptoms I would love to know your takeaways from this one - a lot of information here about something so common, yet so often misunderstood. The deepest foundational layer of any relationship is respect. Respect means honouring someone's most genuine self, despite imperfections or differences. Respect provides the base for which feelings of trust, safety and well-being grow upon. But gaining someone's respect can feel like a massive challenge. When we get caught in the trap of people pleasing and perfectionism, we're not our authentic selves. We then compromise our values, boundaries and energy - all innate qualities that people ultimately respect in us, whether they like us or not. In this episode, we're talking about: Why admitting your mistakes can benefit your relationship The importance of honesty, integrity and constantly striving to be congruent Why mastering your craft is an important element of respect How to be your most genuine, authentic self How to set better boundaries with yourself and others How gaining respect starts with self respect Why gaining respect is (in my opinion) even more important than gaining trust, and how the two are closely interwoven On that note, a question I've been asking many people lately: “What's worse, losing trust in someone or losing respect?” What are your thoughts? Let me know your response - DM or email me (info below). Would love to know your thoughts on this question or the topic of respect. We talk a lot about managing our time, but not managing our energy. Truth is, energy is a far more valuable resource than time. Energy propels us toward the life and relationships we truly want. But we only have so much of it. So how do we stop giving our energy to things that are draining us and holding us back? It starts by recognizing what you may not even realize is depleting your energy and letting go of it. In many cases, this could mean letting go of huge, longstanding anchors in your life - including people. In this episode, we're talking about: The most common energy-draining areas of your life How to boost your energy with kindness Why you need to let go let go of some relationships - even long ones How different people, work and habits can increase your energy A helpful 3-step Energy Audit to help identify exactly where you should be putting your energy and where to stop. At 83 years old, Joy Elliott set out to travel the world the way most graduate students do: staying in youth hostels, buying one-way tickets to spontaneous destinations and drinking with strangers. Heartbroken by the loss of her husband, her trip not only “kept her from dying too” but helped her heal from loss, overcome extreme shyness and prove that we can all live an exciting life at any age. Her new book, “Joy's Journey” is an inspiration that it's never too late to fulfill a dream, meet new people and experience transformational change. I smiled the whole time I read it, and I had to have her on the podcast to go deeper into the greatest lessons and most memorable stories of her travels (so far). In this episode, you'll learn: How travelling solo helps you build relationships Why asking for help is important How traveling helps you overcome shyness How to travel on a limited budget How seniors and youth can build relationships with each other How asking for help builds self confidence What stopped Joy from committing suicide Tips for living happily at an old age How someone can be happy living in poverty Joy has so many great lessons in this episode.
