Unfortunately, you won’t find my room on Clubhouse. Not because I’m not on Clubhouse. I am. There are some fantastic rooms there, and I’ve heard some meaningful discussions. I actually thought about opening a room, and I even decided what it would be called and who my partner coordinators would be. But then I realized that I had totally forgotten the law of FOCUS. This law has a few meanings. I first read about it 25 years ago in what I consider to be the best marketing book I’ve ever read: “The 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing” by Al Ries and Jack Trout. The law of focus says, “The most powerful concept in marketing is owning a word in the prospect’s mind.” We must create a clear identity in the minds of our target audience. The best way to get ahead of the competition is to be very clear and focused about what word we own. But it starts much earlier. There are two decisions you should make regarding the basis of your market strategy: Who are your target customers and how should you define your product or service so that your potential customers understand its value? As an entrepreneur today, you are probably confused. There are so many options, so many people who might need your product, and so many ways you can present your product to your customers. Because there are so many options out there, you must find the customers who feel that they must have your product, that it solves their problem or best fulfills their need. The problem is that to focus and be the best solution for one or two specific target audiences, you have to give up on so many potential buyers. Here comes the law of SACRIFICE—you have to give up something in order to get something. There are three things to sacrifice: product line, target market, and constant change. So many opinions are out there. Everyone knows what you should do, who your target market is, and what marketing activities you should run. But here is the truth: NOBODY KNOWS. You can’t know until you search the market from the point of view of your potential target audience. Searching the market is not complicated today. In most cases, you don’t need an expensive research company. You can learn more about how to do it from my short guide, https://www.reachormiss.com/entrepreneurs-challenge-how-to-find-potential-market-for-a-new-product/ (The three free, practical steps to researching and finding your market). Here are two examples of entrepreneurs who managed to build a successful brand by focusing on and owning a single phrase in the minds of their target market. How did they manage to do this? They focused on the right things and sacrificed other options. The first entrepreneur is Mike Stelzner, who created the leading social media blog “Social Media Examiner” and the Social Media Marketing World global conference. Stelzner managed to own the phrase “Social Media” in the minds of his target audience. Michael Stelzner is the founder of Social Media Examiner, the author of the books Launch and Writing White Papers, and the man behind Social Media Marketing World, the industry’s largest conference. He’s also the host of the Social Media Marketing podcast, the founder of the Social Media Marketing Society, and the host of the weekly Social Media Marketing Talk Show. Michael’s Career “I started as a writer. Then in 2009, I did what I call ‘my great experiment’ when I was able to secure the website, SocialMediaExaminer.com for $10. I connected with some of my friends who were writers and encouraged them to write for this movement that I was starting, called Social Media Examiner. In 2009, not a lot of websites were giving out a lot of free information, and this thing just took off. In months, all of a sudden I had a crazy successful blog on my hands! And then the rest is history … right? From that blog, we were able to launch an online conference, and then a physical conference, and then a podcast and live show—all these things that we are doing today, over eight years...

Everyone knows I'm always looking for new ways of leveraging my expertise. Michael Stelzner is globally known as the founder of Social Media Examiner, one of the forefront sites reporting on social media and digital marketing today. He is a digital marketing leader and social media expert, author of the books Launch and Writing White Papers, and the man behind Social Media Marketing World– the industry’s largest conference. In addition to being the host of the Social Media Marketing podcast, he's the founder of the Social Media Marketing Society, and the central character in The Journey, an episodic YouTube documentary. Our discussion with Michael delves into his passion around video and the powerful tool inside our phones to capture footage and tell a story. He makes no bones about the fact that every company and brand should have a video strategy and if it’s not part of your mix, it needs to be. Not just because we can but because it draws our audiences closer to us as people. This is evidenced by his evolution from blogging to podcasting to video-based episodic storytelling as seen in The Journey. Next, we delve into podcasting, why Spotify is making a big play here, and the length of time people are spending in this (not so new, but exploding) medium. Followed up by the green field opportunities that exist within Instagram- one of the final frontiers of “free” organic reach. That leads us into a discussion on social influencer marketing and his thoughts on finding influencers inside a company. Listen up! In a world that’s become so hyper-virtual, people still want a face-to-face, in-real-life experience that inspires them and gives them memorable moments. How did Michael Stelzner lean into this and build social media’s most well-known conference? Why is it so important to focus on doing less things, excellently, over more things done moderately? How do we balance the love and passion we have for our businesses with being there for our kids? On this episode, Social Media Examiner and Social Media Marketing World founder, Michael shares on his Boss Dad journey. If you’re doing too many things, you’ll accomplish nothing. If you do a few things with excellence, you can accomplish more than you could ever imagine. -Michael Stelzner 3 Things We Learned From This Episode How the internet revolutionized marketing (05:59 - 08:02) Before the internet, marketing was about physical things you mail to people. It was all about packaging physical products like brochures. For a brand to reach the masses, they had to put out costly ads in magazines and publications. The internet completely changed this and even replaced some industries. Balancing time with our kids and our passion for our businesses (10:30 -11:16) A lot of entrepreneurial dads weren’t there during the formative years for their kids. Even when they are there, they sometimes misplace the love and put more into the business than the children. It’s important to find a way to keep the love we have for our children and our business in balance so our kids don’t get only bits and pieces of us. Cultivating entrepreneurialism in our children (16:14-16:29) As our kids get older and take on different hobbies and interests along the way, we have to let them discover who they want to be and just support them. In our businesses, we are the tip of the spear. That means as we move through the air we have to observe, learn, and make sure we land in the right place. Everything we do has to have a strategy and a purpose, even if it means doing less and cutting things down to make what we have excellent. Ep. 83 Show Notes Hi, Reachers, In a fascinating and thought-provoking interview with Mark Schafer, whom I see as the leading marketing experts today, he said: “The question I’m wrestling with now is that everywhere I go, marketing seems to be stuck. There are a few symptoms: People are overwhelmed by technology in marketing They are overusing technology in marketing They’re stuck in ineffective patterns Many of the companies today, either big or small, have social media departments that were established in 2010 to 2014, and I can assure you that almost none of the output these teams are producing have been updated. So much has been changed with social media during the last years. Marketing is too tech-centric instead of human-centric. We don’t want to talk with our customers anymore; we just want to monitor them on Twitter. We automate everything and we are losing our hearts, our souls, and our way. Marketing is sick right now!” Longtime readers and listeners know that I, and this podcast, is all about being customer focused. However, neither Mark Schaefer nor I think that the new marketing technology tools are bad. The opposite is true, I believe that the new technological tools and methods allow marketing communication, engagement, and is personal in a way we've never dreamt of. The point is which tools regarding customers, marketing, and sales are the best to use to maximize your entrepreneurial business. In this podcast, I ask my interviewees for their recommendation of the best marketing tool. However, I specifically tell them that I’m not asking about the latest, shiniest tool in the endless list. I want to hear which tool they use that most effects their marketing and business success. In today's episode, you will hear some of the most important recommendations from my interviewees. In the show notes of this new episode you will find the list of the most recommended tools of our guests, opinion leaders, and successful entrepreneurs. This surprisingly highly recommended and tool received recommendations of five different guests including Chris Brogan, Tomas Laurinavicius, and Joe Pulizzi. I chose to share the beautiful answer of Mike Stelzner: Mike Stelzner Michael Stelzner is the founder of Social Media Examiner, author of the books, Launch and Writing White Papers, and the man behind Social Media Marketing World–the industry’s largest conference. He’s also the host of the Social Media Marketing podcast, founder of the Social Media Marketing Society, and host of the weekly Social Media Marketing Talk Show. Michael’s recommended tools for customer focus, marketing, or sales Even though I run a company and conference that are called Social Media Examiner and Marketing World, I think the technology which is the best is e-mail. So many businesses are building their “house” on rented lands – social platforms, and suddenly those platforms change the rules and we no longer are able to reach the audience we want to reach. That’s why every business must have a strategy for building their own email list. For not being dependent on somebody else when they want to contact their audience. Samuel Pavin, Erik Huberman and Dan Knowlton are a few that recommended on this second most recommended tool. However, the king and knight of this tool which is much more than a tool - is Marcus Sherridan Marcus Sheridan Called a Web Marketing guru by the new York times, the story of how Marcus Sherridan was able to save his swimming pool company “Riverpools” form the economic crush of 2008, has been featured in multiple books, publications and stories around the world. It is also the inspiration for his newest book “They Ask You Answer” which was dubbed the number 1 marketing book to read in 2017 by Mashable. Today, Sherridan has become a highly thought after global speaker and consultant in the digital sales...

They started realizing they could make a career out of interacting with people on the internet. That was shocking to them!” - Michael Stelzner on the career jumpstarts in social media

You can hardly open your email these days without seeing someone promising the super-secret key to insane business growth. I know that the title of this episode seems like over-the-top clickbait, but by the time we’re done you’ll see that it’s no exaggeration. This kind of extraordinary growth is happening right now to my friend Michael Stelzner of Social Media Examiner. We're going to be talking with him this week and let him explain exactly how he has done this and how you can do the same for your business. Click here to download or listen to this episode now. Spiritual Foundations This week’s spiritual foundations should be exciting for you because I'm about to reveal to you a secret superpower you probably did not know you had. If you're a follower of Jesus, you are part of what's called the royal priesthood. It means that you are both a king and a priest under the kingly priesthood of Jesus Christ. In the old covenant, kings and priests were two different groups of people. You could be a king or a priest, but you could not be both at the same time. Today, if we are in Christ, we are both kings and priests. A royal priesthood. That means we have double the supernatural speaking power because of our king-priesthood roles. How do I know this? Well, if you look in Ecclesiastes chapter eight verse four it says, “Where the word of a king is, there is power.” If you look at Deuteronomy, chapter 21 verse five it says of priests, “By their word, every controversy and every assault shall be settled.” As a believer, if you're in business, you have an edge over other business people. There you go, I said it. What you say about your business deals will come to pass. You have that power in your speech. If you get falsely accused of something, if people give you bad reviews online or say bad things about you as they inevitably will, you need to know that by your very word, every controversy and every assault will be settled. This doesn't just apply to your business, it also applies the rest of your life. As a king-priest, you can bless your children by speaking words of destiny over them. You have the power to set in motion the supernatural forces that will give them what they need to win the battles of life and live out their destiny. Instead of agreeing with the devil when he says bad things about you, your life, your business, and your family, you should declare the opposite. You should say, along with me, “I live under supernatural protection. I prosper in all my relationships. God forgives all my iniquities and heals all my diseases.” You can say, straight from Scripture, “The Lord will make my way prosperous and give me good success.” You've got double the speaking power of any king or priest from the old covenant. Use your double speaking power and bring these blessings to fruition in your own life. Speak what you want to see and go out there and be the royal priest that you are. Tip of the Week I'm going to confess right now that I have never understood cryptocurrency. I hear people talking about Bitcoin and I just nod politely and listen, realizing I have no idea what they're talking about. That is until I had a conversation with my friend Joel Comm who is now the co-host of The Bad Crypto Podcast. This is a great place to start getting answers to questions like: What is cryptocurrency? What is Bitcoin? Does it have a place in your future? I think after listening to a couple of episodes, the answer is, “Yes it does.” I think this is the future of currency, of investing. It can be hard to understand, but these guys make it easy. My advice is to start at episode one and listen to each successive episode to get caught up. Take a listen, you’ll thank me…I promise. 33rd Episode’s Show Notes Michael Stelzner founded Social Media Examiner in 2009, and his biggest success was the Social Media Marketing World Conference. Jeff Bullas’s blog receives over 5 million visitors a year. David Beebe Is an Emmy-winning Branded Content Producer, Keynote Speaker, and Content Decoded. Jeremiah Gardner has been featured in Forbes, The Huffington Post, Entrepreneur Magazine, Lifehacker, and The Guardian. Mike Allton is a Content Marketing Practitioner, an award-winning Blogger and an Author. John Nemo is a Bestselling Author who wrote 7 books, a former Associated Press Reporter, Award-Winning PR Director and Social Media Consultant. These are the most successful people I have chosen to share their key success factors with you. Hello, Reach or Miss listeners. It’s almost impossible to tell what exactly makes a successful entrepreneurial brand so successful. However, I discovered that when we dig deep, all of the leading entrepreneurs have the one key success factor that works for them. I’ve chosen 6 successful guests to share their 8 key factors of success, which can be implemented by any entrepreneur that is looking to break their own records and become a market leader and a successful entrepreneur. The one key success factor Michael Stelzner Michael Stelzner is the founder of Social Media Examiner, author of the books, Launch and Writing White Papers, and the man behind Social Media Marketing World–the industry’s largest conference. He’s also the host of the Social Media Marketing podcast, founder of the Social Media Marketing Society, and host of the weekly Social Media Marketing Talk Show. There was a very clear motto in Michael Stelzner’s interview. When I asked Michael about his best advice for entrepreneurs and new small business owners, he had a clear answer: I think that when you get started, you really need to talk to a lot of people to really understand what their problems are. That could be through going to an event where a lot of people that meet your customers happen to be, and talking with them to understand what the customers’ problems are. If you already have some people in an email list, you can send an email to them, asking them questions, to understand what their challenges are. I think it’s the number one way that anybody can be successful. A lot of times we think that everyone is like us, which is totally not true, and we say “if everyone is like me, then they would be interested in that,” and then we just throw it out to the world and hope it sticks. Michael Stelzner’s one key success factor I would have to say truly knowing who our audience is and giving them exactly what they want, for free, over and over again. Jeff Bullas Jeff is a digital entrepreneur, marketing blogger, keynote speaker, digital strategist, consultant, and bestselling author. He works with companies and executives to grow their online businesses through social, digital, and marketing automation. His blog receives over 5 million visitors a year and is found at jeffbullas.com (http://www.jeffbullas.com) . He has spent most of his business career involved with information technologies, telecommunications, and the web. For Jeff Bullas, starting his social media career was a result of four different influences that happen around the same time: He was looking for a new career path. Jeff told me he read David Meerman Scott’s book, The New Rules of Marketing and PR, in 2008. Meerman talked about the power of content to attract the audience instead of having to go out and chase them and it sounded like a good idea to me because most businesses use cold calls.. He came upon Tim Ferries, who he worked for and Tim Ferries liked the idea. The last piece of inspiration was reading a blog post of HubSpot saying that if you don’t have a clue of what to start a business on then start a blog… “For me,”...

Michael Stelzner Show Notes Michael Stelzner is the founder of Social Media Examiner, author of the books, Launch and Writing White Papers, and the man behind Social Media Marketing World–the industry’s largest conference. He’s also the host of the Social Media Marketing podcast, founder of the Social Media Marketing Society, and host of the weekly Social Media Marketing Talk Show. Most passionate about I recently started something brand new, called The Journey, which is episodic documentary – a weekly short documentary about my company and the impossible mission that we are on to take the conference to a bigger place, which seems impossible right now. And every week, I’m documenting the struggle and how I’m breaking through in a short 5-7 minute videos, and so far my community loves it. We plan on doing it for five months, until the Social Media Marketing World conference. I think it’s one of the most fun things I’ve ever done, because it’s a real documentary about a real company that struggling to become successful. Our conference, Social Media Marketing World, had 3100 people there in 2017, and we want to grow that by 62% year over year, and then another 100% a year over year. We want to get to 10,000 people on the conference of 2019, which would more than triple our growth in 24 months. And we hope that, by sharing this journey, people will help us accomplish our mission, and a lot of people would find it entertaining, exciting, and learn from it along the way. Michael’s Career I started as a writer, and then in 2009 I did what I call ‘my great experiment’ when I was able to secure the website, SocialMediaExaminer.com, for 10 dollars. And I connected some of my friends that were writers and encouraged them to write for this movement that I was starting that was called Social Media Examiner. In 2009, there were not a lot of websites that were giving out a lot of free information and this thing just took off, and in months, all of a sudden I had a crazy successful blog in my hand! And then the rest is history… right? From that blog we were able to launch online conference, and then a physical conference, and then a podcast and live show; all these things that we are doing today, over eight years later. Michael’s customers Anyone who understands the importance of doing marketing with social media, so it’s typically somebody who is either a self-employed person who has a business and doesn’t have a lot of money, and wants to figure out how to use Social Media to grow the business or it’s somebody who works for a business, and their job is to do marketing for that business. I classify all these people as the label marketers. Social Media changes every week, this is what gives us longevity because unlike other industries, like science for example, where once you discover something that’s true, you can kind of rely on that forever; in the world of social media marketing, things change constantly and as a result, marketers need to keep up with it all and that’s where we come in. Michael’s best advice about approaching the customers I think that when you get started, you really need to talk to a lot of people to really understand what their problems are. That could be through going to an event where a lot of people that met your customers happened to be and talking with them to understand what the customers’ problems are. If you already have some people in an email list, you can send an email to them, asking them a lot of questions to understand what their challenges are. But somehow survey or ask what the challenges are, I think it’s the number one way that anybody can be successful. A lot of times we guess we think that everyone is like us, which is totally not true, and we say “if everyone is like me then they would be interested in that,” and then we just throw it out to the world and hope it sticks. Biggest failure with a customer I was already very successful,...
