Today's episode of the podcast is a throwback to an incredible interview with Mike Stelzner, the creator of Social Media Examiner and Social Media Marketing World. I had a great time chatting with Mike about out how he uses his platform to stand out in a busy industry – so much of which is still relevant now! KEY TAKEAWAYS COVERED IN THE PODCAST You don't have to be on every single social media platform. Instead, you need to ensure you're putting your energy into the spaces where your customers are. Social media is great when it comes to tracking your results. If you're struggling to track your results, however, you need to ensure you're making goals to ‘stop' things as well. If you want to stand out in a noisy industry you need to understand exactly who you are trying to reach and what they struggle with. Once you know who you're trying to reach, you need to ensure you're creating content for that person. This could be a podcast, written word, video or live and in person. Think about what you're best at. If you don't know what your customers want, ask them. Once you have asked your audience, you need to see if their actions are matching their statements. We should all be doing stuff that makes it easier for people to remember who we are. The best way to make an impact on someone in person is to meet them in person. THE ONE THING YOU NEED TO REMEMBER ABOVE ALL ELSE One of the most important things you can do when it comes to social media is to be yourself. Successful people are authentic. HIGHLIGHTS YOU SIMPLY CAN'T MISS The Elevation Principle that outlines the 3 things you need to be successful. If you're not putting information out there, someone else is. You want to be the resource that people come to every single time they need information. Social media is called social media for a reason. If you're not a nice person, you won't survive. The 3 shared traits behind successful entrepreneurshipsIt took me fourteen years of research that included following 120 entrepreneurs from their first stages, Interviewing more than 200 successful entrepreneurs, and listening to thousands of them. Here are the three factors of the Formula for Entrepreneurial Business Success. 1. New / Non- existing thing - that's needed Jon Lee Dumas invented a daily podcast, Jeff bullas started to write about social media when the first innovators seeked for information, Mike Stelzner started to share content for free, Douglas Burdett started to interview authors of new marketing books, John Nemo cracked the code for selling through LinkedIn, Pam Wasley established the interim executive model, Mike Allton built websites for clients and shared content about social media to find more customers when he realized that what his customers really wanted was to learn about how they can use social media. So, he became a blogger and social media educator. and the list goes on. You don't need to be the first, and you don't need to be the only one in the world that offers that product or service, you do need to be the first or unique among your target audience. The story I heard in my interview with Mike Allton is a great example not only for choosing a new needed service (or in that case, information) but what it takes to find it. Mike Allton Mike Allton is a Content Marketing Practitioner, award-winning Blogger, and Author in St. Louis, and the Chief Marketing Officer at SiteSell. He has been working with websites and the Internet since the early '90s and is active on all of the major social networks. Mike teaches a holistic approach to content marketing that leverages blog content, social media and SEO to drive traffic, generate leads, and convert those leads into sales. Mike's entrepreneurship I started the Social Media Hat back in 2012. At that time, I had been building websites, and as part of that website business, I was blogging about social media marketing in order to give my prospects and customers helpful information. It didn't attract people who needed websites, it attracted people that already had a website and wanted to learn about their social media opportunity. So, as a result, I wasn't growing my online business, but I discovered that I like to write and I like to teach people how to use social media blogging. I realized that the content doesn't help to sell websites, however, I decided to create a site about social media blogging and that what I did. I've used my site as a testing ground for anything related to online marketing. I execute the test and write about it and I found out my audience really appreciates those kinds of insights. And in the meantime, I was experiencing making money through the website and I tested that as well. Affiliate relationships, Google AdWords, Display ads, and many other monetization techniques. The most successful way to make money is to have a product that can you sell a lot of, so it can scale. 2. Technology is a success factor Andres Pira started to use VR systems that allow his real estate clients to walk through and see what they are buying, without actually being there, and sold an extensive amount of units just with this technology. Dorothéa Bozicolona-Volpe uses technological listening tools to focus on understanding customers' needs to help her clients make their digital transformation. Paul Bratby got some geeks that turned his trading strategy that hasn't lost a quote for 15 years, into a software. Mellissah Smith worked with a development team that developed the technology for developing automatic marketing strategies without a human. You don't necessarily need to develop a new technological tool (although sometimes that's what leaded entrepreneurs towards a billion-dollar company market cap). However, you must find the technology that will allow you to boost your entrepreneurship to a meaningful...

Unfortunately, you won’t find my room on Clubhouse. Not because I’m not on Clubhouse. I am. There are some fantastic rooms there, and I’ve heard some meaningful discussions. I actually thought about opening a room, and I even decided what it would be called and who my partner coordinators would be. But then I realized that I had totally forgotten the law of FOCUS. This law has a few meanings. I first read about it 25 years ago in what I consider to be the best marketing book I’ve ever read: “The 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing” by Al Ries and Jack Trout. The law of focus says, “The most powerful concept in marketing is owning a word in the prospect’s mind.” We must create a clear identity in the minds of our target audience. The best way to get ahead of the competition is to be very clear and focused about what word we own. But it starts much earlier. There are two decisions you should make regarding the basis of your market strategy: Who are your target customers and how should you define your product or service so that your potential customers understand its value? As an entrepreneur today, you are probably confused. There are so many options, so many people who might need your product, and so many ways you can present your product to your customers. Because there are so many options out there, you must find the customers who feel that they must have your product, that it solves their problem or best fulfills their need. The problem is that to focus and be the best solution for one or two specific target audiences, you have to give up on so many potential buyers. Here comes the law of SACRIFICE—you have to give up something in order to get something. There are three things to sacrifice: product line, target market, and constant change. So many opinions are out there. Everyone knows what you should do, who your target market is, and what marketing activities you should run. But here is the truth: NOBODY KNOWS. You can’t know until you search the market from the point of view of your potential target audience. Searching the market is not complicated today. In most cases, you don’t need an expensive research company. You can learn more about how to do it from my short guide, https://www.reachormiss.com/entrepreneurs-challenge-how-to-find-potential-market-for-a-new-product/ (The three free, practical steps to researching and finding your market). Here are two examples of entrepreneurs who managed to build a successful brand by focusing on and owning a single phrase in the minds of their target market. How did they manage to do this? They focused on the right things and sacrificed other options. The first entrepreneur is Mike Stelzner, who created the leading social media blog “Social Media Examiner” and the Social Media Marketing World global conference. Stelzner managed to own the phrase “Social Media” in the minds of his target audience. Michael Stelzner is the founder of Social Media Examiner, the author of the books Launch and Writing White Papers, and the man behind Social Media Marketing World, the industry’s largest conference. He’s also the host of the Social Media Marketing podcast, the founder of the Social Media Marketing Society, and the host of the weekly Social Media Marketing Talk Show. Michael’s Career “I started as a writer. Then in 2009, I did what I call ‘my great experiment’ when I was able to secure the website, SocialMediaExaminer.com for $10. I connected with some of my friends who were writers and encouraged them to write for this movement that I was starting, called Social Media Examiner. In 2009, not a lot of websites were giving out a lot of free information, and this thing just took off. In months, all of a sudden I had a crazy successful blog on my hands! And then the rest is history … right? From that blog, we were able to launch an online conference, and then a physical conference, and then a podcast and live show—all these things that we are doing today, over eight years...

BUSINESS BUILDING INSIGHTSDon't let fear stop you. Say yes to new opportunities and figure it out after. Practice bravery in your business. Putting yourself out there can lead to big things. Overcome imposter syndrome (http://giftbizunwrapped.com/episodes/take-control-of-your-fear) by reminding yourself of wins. This week’s episode is an incredible interview with Mike Stelzner, the creator of Social Media Examiner and Social Media Marketing World. As an expert in the social media marketing world, I wanted to speak to Mike to find out how he uses his platform to stand out in a busy industry. We look at what makes people successful, giving his formula for creating content that people will want to engage with. Key Takeaways Covered in the Podcast · The speed in which social media moves is one of the biggest challenges for those working in a social industry, as well as those using social media to grow their business. Luckily, it’s starting to slow down. · You don’t have to be on every single social media platform. Instead, you need to ensure you’re putting your energy into the spaces where your customers are. · Social media is great when it comes to tracking your results. If you’re struggling to track your results, however, you need to ensure you’re making goals to ‘stop’ things as well. · If you want to stand out in a noisy industry is to understand exactly who you are trying to reach. Who is that somebody? What struggles do they have? What do they do? When you create something, remind yourself of the person you’re creating it for. · Once you know who you’re trying to reach, you need to ensure you’re creating content for that person. This could be a podcast, written word, video or live and in person. Think about what you’re best at. · If you don’t know what your customers want, ASK THEM. Once you have asked your audience, you need to see if their actions are matching their statements. Clear signs are the messages you receive from your followers. · Not everyone is supposed to be in your tribe. · If you’re not putting information out there, someone else is. You want to be the resource that people come to every single time they need information. · We should all be doing stuff that makes it easier for people to remember who we are. · The formula for success is ‘great content + other people – marketing messages = growth’. When it comes to your business you need to ensure you have amazing content, strong connections and less of a pitch. This is the Elevation Principle. · The best way to make an impact on someone in person is to meet them in person. · Social media is called social media for a reason. If you’re not a nice person, you won’t survive. · One thing you need to remember above all else… One of the most important things you can do when it comes to social media is be yourself. Successful people are authentic. Episode 133 Show Notes After twelve years of research that included following 120 entrepreneurs from their first stages, Interviewing more than 100 successful entrepreneurs, and listening to hundreds of thousands of them, here are the three factors of the Formula for Entrepreneurial Business Success. 1. The thing that’s needed Jon Lee Dumas invented a daily podcast, Jeff bullas started to write about social media when the first innovators seeked for information, Mike Stelzner started to share content for free, Mike Allton built websites for clients and shared content about social media to find more customers when he realized that what his customers really wanted was to learn about how they can use social media. So he became a blogger and social media educator. Douglas Burdett started to interview authors of new marketing books, John Nemo cracked the code for selling through LinkedIn, Pam Wasley established the interim executive model, Mike Allton built websites for clients and shared content about social media to find more customers when he realized that what his customers really wanted was to learn about how they can use social media. So he became a blogger and social media educator. and the list goes on. You don’t need to be the first, and you don’t need to be the only one in the world that offers that product or service, you do need to be the first or unique among your target audience. Let’s hear Mike Allton. Mike Allton Mike Allton is a Content Marketing Practitioner, award-winning Blogger and Author in St. Louis, and the Chief Marketing Officer at SiteSell. He has been working with websites and the Internet since the early ’90’s, and is active on all of the major social networks. Mike teaches a holistic approach to content marketing that leverages blog content, social media and SEO to drive traffic, generate leads, and convert those leads into sales. Mike’s entrepreneurship I started the Social Media Hat back in 2012. At that time, I had been building websites, and as part of that website business, I was blogging about social media marketing in order to give my prospects and customers helpful information. It didn’t attract people who needed websites, it attracted people that already had website and wanted to learn about their social media opportunity. So, as a result, I wasn’t growing my online business, but I discovered that I like to write and I like to teach people how to use social media blogging. I realized that the content doesn’t help to sell websites, however I decided to create a site about social media blogging and that what I did. I’ve used my site as a testing ground for anything related to online marketing. Dorothéa Bozicolona-Volpe uses technological listening tools to focus on understanding customers’ needs to help her clients make their digital transformation. Paul Bratby got some geeks that turned his trading strategy that hasn’t lost a quote for 15 years, into a software. Mellissah Smith worked with a development team that developed the technology for developing automatic marketing strategies without a human. You don’t necessarily need to develop a new technological tool (although sometimes that’s what leaded entrepreneurs towards a billion-dollar company market cap). However,...

Today, we’re testing Mike Stelzner’s theory that shorter videos under 2 minutes are highly favored by Facebook. Let’s find out, on today’s Social Media Lab.
A video can do a whole lot more than deliver information to your tribe. If done right, video has the power to tell a story that moves, inspires, motivates and captivates the viewer. But, creating episodic video content that people can’t wait to consume takes a lot of time, energy and often times, a great deal of frustration. In this episode of Youpreneur FM, I’m joined by my good friend and founder of Social Media Examiner, Mike Stelzner. One thing you need to know about Mike is that he’s probably one of the most transparent entrepreneurs doing business in the online world. He never holds back. Amazingly, he’s managed to rebrand himself over the last 18 months with his weekly video show, The Journey. Mike and I discuss his show in more detail covering why he launched it and how he was able to use the numbers and data behind his own content marketing to help him discover how his show was (or wasn’t) being consumed. Using this information, Mike was able to make some ridiculously drastic changes to completely transform the show and reach an even bigger audience. Find out how he did it by tuning in to the episode! Essential Learning Points From This Episode: People love stories that have unexpected twists In a day where we struggle to get attention, story is the thing that cuts through Sharing your struggles helps to make you more authentic, relatable and likable Building your personal brand is key to growing your business Use analytics to ‘crunch the numbers’ and make decisions based on your findings Nobody watches videos longer than a minute on Facebook. And the main trends in entrepreneurial marketing for the New Year I often asked how I choose my interviewees for this podcast. I imagine the main reason for the question is the high diversity of the eighty guests on the show since its establishment on March 2017. It’s not easy to find a clear pattern among them. Can you guess what the connection is between interviewees like: Kate Erickson, Guy Kawasaki, Pam Wasley, John Lee Dumas, Mike Stelzner, Jack Kosakowski, Andy Crestodina, Mark Schaefer, Mark Metry, Mike Allton, Chris Brogan, Pascal Guyon, David Beebe, and Lee Oden, just to name a few? You already know that they are all successful entrepreneurs and/or influencers (opinion leaders) in their fields… However, besides these common characteristics, they are all customer focused entrepreneurs, which is what marketing is all about, after all. They, as entrepreneurs, succeeded due to their customer focused approach, or as educators and influencers about this critical issue. I chose interviewees who left their mark on the field of entrepreneurial marketing. But before diving into the most meaningful interviews that marked the changing marketing direction for entrepreneurs in 2019, I would like to remind you about the main differentiation of entrepreneurial and/or startup marketing: It is the need to introduce, sell, and brand a new unfamiliar product or service at least in one aspect - It can be a totally new product, or a new target market for the product, or a totally new business model and the like. The biggest trends of entrepreneurial marketing for 2019 and who the trend setters and the early adopters of those trends are Entrepreneurial successes based on a failure When I joined the entrepreneurial industry, entrepreneurs were considered as magical geniuses, which were considered to be potential billionaires by the fact they established a startup. But with time many entrepreneurs and startups fell, and a lot of investments went down the drain. A few of my guests, like James Arthur Ray, Ovi Negrean, and Josh Elledge talked about the inevitable failures as a base for success. Ovi Negrean Even though you might be at one peak at one point, if you want to go to an even higher peak, you will have to go through some valleys. After 10+ years of experience working in various firms, ranging from start-ups to Fortune 500 companies, having also some entrepreneurial ventures in between, Ovi jumped full time into the startup world with nugget (acquired) and is now focused on SocialBee (https://socialbee.io/) . He has experience in building and managing software development teams; building SaaS and mobile products; creating ROI-positive social media; marketing and product launches. He is passionate about helping startups succeed in building great products, finding the appropriate launch sequence, and the best levers to grow. He’s also an idea machine and can really help with brainstorming. His imaginary friends say he’s a fun guy. When I was growing up, I used to climb mountains and I still do. I still like to go snowboarding from time to time and I’m really looking forward to being able to go to Switzerland again. Those are the most beautiful mountains that I’ve ever seen. I think also, coming back a bit in the metaphorical world from the physical world, but keeping with the mountain part, I also found that our life is also like mountains; even though you might be at one peak at one point, if you want to go to an even higher peak, you will have to go through some valley A link to Ovi’s podcast interview: Ovi Negrean: Even though you might be at one peak at one point, if you want to go to an even higher peak, you will have to go through some valleys (http://www.reachormiss.com/ovi-negrean-even-though-you-might-be-at-one-peak-at-one-point-if-you-want-to-go-to-an-even-higher-peak-you-will-have-to-go-through-some-valleys/)

He's also host of the Social Media Marketing podcast, founder of the Social Media Marketing Society, and the central character in The Journey, an episodic documentary.Michael Stelzner lives and breathes storytelling and social media. While we explore his story, we dig some interesting nuggets about social media and how it affects storytellers today.“If you think about this industry of social media and how young it is, it's just 10 years old… so what you have is a lot of people who, around 2008 when it really started blowing up, were out of work. They started realizing they could make a career out of interacting with people on the internet. That was shocking to them!” - Michael Stelzner on the career jumpstarts in social media
On today’s episode I wanted to share an interview that I did on Mike Stelzner’s The Social Media Marketing Podcast. I also share some creative ways for sourcing your lookalike audiences, or what base audiences you can create your lookalike audiences from. Want to win a 30-minute strategy session with me? On the Show Today You’ll Learn: What lookalike audiences are and what using them will allow marketers to do How accurate they are what we should be considering when targeting location and audience size Ways to get creative in using lookalike audiences, besides just exporting your email list What custom audiences to explore when making lookalike audiences and ways to use the engagement audiences from videos How to target cold audiences effectively – instead of just trying to direct sell to them Examples of how I’ve used these strategies in my own business, why we exclude as many groups as possible, my budget recommendations and more I’ve been getting some good feedback about the shorter Quick Tip episodes I’ve been airing weekly, and stay tuned because I have another one coming your way later this week!
Hayut Yogev Show Notes I decided to be my own podcast guest…. It started as an idea from one of our listeners, and I decided to go for it. Marketing has been a major part of my life for the last 32 years; With executive international brands marketing roles for the first 22 years of my career, and working with more than 120 startups and entrepreneurs on their global strategy, marketing, and sales for the following ten years. The exceptional percentage of failures of startups companies led me to develop a unique model for startups, enabling them to find the biggest opportunity for their venture in the international market. Most passionate about For the last 10 years, I’ve been passionate about helping entrepreneurs and startup founders to succeed in selling their products and services while building a leading, sustainable brand. Today I’m most passionate about my podcast the Reach or Miss podcast for the customer focused entrepreneur. On the show I interview successful entrepreneurs and opinion leaders about the customer focus and approach that enabled them to achieve their major successes. When I started this podcast in March 2017, I didn’t know what my interviewees would say. I had a clear perception of what would enable entrepreneurship to succeed. Over the last 15 months, I interviewed 60 successful entrepreneurs and influencers like Guy Kawasaki, John Lee Dumas, Mike Stelzner, Cheris Brogan, Joe Pulizzi, Marcus Sheridan, and many others. I was excited, although not surprised, to find that what I knew about marketing and business success in both established companies and entrepreneurship was exactly what all my interviewees talked about. It’s all about focusing on the right customers; it’s about listening to your customers and understanding their needs. My best advice about approaching customers My advice is always to focus on your customers. It starts with finding your biggest market opportunity; however, it’s important to remember that we look for different kinds of target audience in different stages of entrepreneurial business. When we launch the product, we look for the innovators, those that look for innovation and new solutions. Those who are willing to take the risk of a new and not-yet-proved product or service. The target audience we focus on in the second stage is the early adopters, and only then should we approach the ‘heavy users’. And as I said before, listening to your customers and focusing on their needs and behaviors is also the most repeated advice from my podcast’s interviewees. Biggest failure with a customer I think the biggest one is that I haven’t yet succeeded in making a major shift in the perceptions of most startup founders and entrepreneurs. Most of them still think they know who their potential customers are – but their thoughts are subjective, we can never know until we check! Somewhere along the way, it became reasonable for entrepreneurs to believe that startups are all about going from failure to failure until success comes. No! If you won’t study the market in order to understand where your company’s specific market opportunity is, you will never play it smarter than your competitors. And you will keep playing roulette, hoping to win one day. But in business, the opportunities are huge, if you play the game right. Unfortunately, more than 90% of the entrepreneurs I met within recent years (a few thousand) – don’t! To answer this question with a particular example, I think one of my biggest failures was with a company that offered great services in the world of rules engines especially for businesses. They decided to build a complete product for financial predictions based on an excellent rules engine they developed, but they didn’t succeed in selling it. During the research and the market strategy process we walked them through, there was a clear answer from the market about what they needed....
Have you ever wondered why someone that seems new on the scene seems to come out of nowhere to become an overnight success? Or is it just a myth of overnight success? In this episode, we talk about the myth of overnight success and share some examples of people who appear to be overnight successes in social media marketing, but who really built their skills the old-fashioned way. By hard work. Episode Highlights: Here are a few people that Madalyn and Kami watched as they came on the scene and heard people say were “overnight successes.” You can read their back stories on the links to see that they were anything but. They did leverage all of their experiences before, and some were even well known in other industries. Brian Fanzo got his start in Meerkat, which was a live stream program that was crushed by the release of Periscope. Brian took advantage of the live streaming technology to get widespread recognition. He was at the right place at the right time, getting seen by all the industry experts. They took notice of him, and next thing you know, he was speaking across the world. Before he broke out on the online marketing scene, he has a successful career in Cybersecurity. Sunny Lenarduzzi is a YouTube star doing business to business videos starting her career in news media. She started working for a news organization and knew how to be on camera in a good way. Moving away from that, she used Periscope and YouTube to talk to her audience and expanded into the videos she does today. She collaborated with others to do a promo with Applebee’s which was marketed really well and was really successful with over 1 billion impressions. (Related: Listen to a recent episode with Sunny about how to rock YouTube). Mike Stelzner rocketed to the top and is known as the CEO of Social Media Examiner which is a blog dedicated to social media marketing. He also has the largest social media podcast called The Social Media Marketing podcast. Here is what Stelzner did before he took the social media blogging world by storm. He was known for being the Whitepaper expert, and he helped many companies write these persuasive essays to build their business and wrote books about it. Hard work made it easy to pivot into a new, but closely related industry. Are you ready to find your path to success like Brian, Sunny and Mike. We went over a few keys to get there, but it probably won’t get you there overnight. Be Consistent If you lose your consistency, you lose your voice. Choose your platform and show up every day. Check in on your secondary platforms and find a frequency you can adhere to. Let Your Work Speak for Itself Keep your work at excellent levels and people will take notice. People are always looking for good content, fresh ideas and things to talk about. Don’t Compare Yourself to Others You have something specific to give. Figure out what that is, then share it. Look at your competition, audit them and find a gap that isn’t being covered, rather than compete with them. Be Head Down and Focus on You What can you bring to the table that’s different? Take courses and listen to books to better yourself and learn more. Collaborate, Collaborate, Collaborate Find opportunities to partner up with someone in your network and collaborate on something together. That is how we started this podcast. Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook - now even LinkedIn is getting in on the act of providing on-demand video tools for users. What does that mean for you as a marketer? You’ve got to learn how to effectively use these incredible new tools that are available. In this conversation, Mike Stelzner describes how “edutainment” in the form of video can be one of the most innovative and effective ways to use social media. He’s doing it himself by producing a “reality” video series he’s titled “The Journey” and is seeing amazing watch numbers increase right before his eyes. Find out exactly what Mike’s doing, how he’s doing it, and why he’s doing it - and how his example can serve as a template for becoming more innovative in your social media marketing efforts, on this episode of Social Business Engine. Social Media Innovation differentiates you in an increasingly crowded market. Here is how Mike Stelzner is staying on the cutting edge Mike’s new video show, “The Journey” is a chronicle of his entrepreneurial path. It walks through the real-life, daily issues he faces as a business owner and leader of the amazing team at Social Media Examiner. From hiring and firing contractors, working through strategy and vision, to planning amazing events like Social Media Marketing World, the show documents what it’s really like to lead a successful business. In his conversation with Bernie on this episode, Mike highlights why he thought the show would be a good way to market SME as a company via social media and explains why marketers need to begin adopting the new video tools available while there’s still time to be on the cutting edge. Mike’s a great example of a person who takes risks for the sake of leading the industry forward. After hearing this conversation (and seeing his new show) you’ll agree, so be sure you listen - and check out “The Journey.”
40th Episode’s Show Notes Hi entrepreneurs reachers. We are celebrating our 40th episode! I want to thank you, our listeners, for finding us, for coming back and listening over and over again, for your feedback, and most of all, I would like to thank you for your trust. My biggest wish, and the reason I started this podcast, is to provide each and every one of you with the most relevant and important content and tools that will help you entrepreneurs, startup founders, and small business owners to gain the fastest, biggest, and most sustainable success through an ongoing, growing stream of leads and paying customers while building your brand. Having worked in executive international brands marketing roles for the first 20 years of my career and having worked with hundreds entrepreneurs and startups on their global strategy, marketing, and sales for the following ten years, I can tell you that during these crazy times of endless changes, there is one thing that hasn’t changed; the way people think, desire, and decide. Marketing is all about looking at things from the point of view of your potential customers, because the money you are looking for is in their pockets. Once you learn to look at your product or service from your customers’ eyes, brain, and heart – the customers and the market leadership will be yours. In this episode, we chose to walk you through the second round of the best advice for winning your customers, from these seven leaders and most successful entrepreneurs: Mike Stelzner, Jeff Bullas, Erik Huberman, Mike Allton, Ian Anderson Gray, Douglas Burdett, and Jeremiah Gardner. I never know in advance what will be the best advice from my guests. When we decided to launch a podcast that will be devoted to customer focus for entrepreneurs, I wasn’t sure what would come out of these interviews. There is a huge shift in marketing today, but the amazing thing is that these seven people gave exactly the same advice we got in the first “best advice ever” episode – I invite you to listen to this episode to hear the top advice in 2018. I first learned about Michael Stelzner in 2009, while looking for some professional information about social media, and was amazed to see all the great most professional content Michael’s blog Social Media Examiner was sharing. No one shared much knowledge for free back then. But it wasn’t only the fact it was free, Mike Stelzner and his college writers opened a wide gate to this wonderland of social media. I fell in love with this blog and a few years later, I flew 20 hours from Tel Aviv to San Diego to take part in the 3rd SMMW conference and haven’t missed that conference since. Lets listen to Mike’s best advice: Mike Stelzner Michael Stelzner is the founder of Social Media Examiner, author of the books, Launch and Writing White Papers, and the man behind Social Media Marketing World–the industry’s largest conference. He’s also the host of the Social Media Marketing podcast, founder of the Social Media Marketing Society, and host of the weekly Social Media Marketing Talk Show. Michael’s best advice about approaching the customers I think that when you get started, you really need to talk to a lot of people to really understand what their problems are. That could be through going to an event where a lot of people that meet your customers happen to be and talking with them to understand what the customers’ problems are. If you already have some people in an email list, you can send an email to them, asking them a lot of questions to understand what their challenges are. But somehow survey or ask what the challenges are, I think it’s the number one way that anybody can be successful. A lot of times we guess we think that everyone is like us, which is totally not true, and we say “if everyone is like me then they would be interested in that,” and then we just throw it out to the world and hope it sticks. The story of...
Social media marketing has changed dramatically over the past few years. From the rise of live video, to the huge drop-off in organic reach for Facebook pages. New platforms launching and disappearing seemingly overnight. It can be hard for the busy membership owner to keep up. Mike Stelzner is a man with his finger on the pulse of social media marketing. As founder of Social Media Examiner and the man behind the largest conference in the industry - Social Media Marketing World - he's the first port of call for experts and influencers worldwide when it comes to whats working right now in social media. In today's episode of The Membership Guys Podcast - I talk to Mike about the current state of social media marketing, and chat about how he uses social media and content marketing for both his conference and Social Media Examiners own membership website.
Michael Stelzner Show Notes Michael Stelzner is the founder of Social Media Examiner, author of the books, Launch and Writing White Papers, and the man behind Social Media Marketing World–the industry’s largest conference. He’s also the host of the Social Media Marketing podcast, founder of the Social Media Marketing Society, and host of the weekly Social Media Marketing Talk Show. Most passionate about I recently started something brand new, called The Journey, which is episodic documentary – a weekly short documentary about my company and the impossible mission that we are on to take the conference to a bigger place, which seems impossible right now. And every week, I’m documenting the struggle and how I’m breaking through in a short 5-7 minute videos, and so far my community loves it. We plan on doing it for five months, until the Social Media Marketing World conference. I think it’s one of the most fun things I’ve ever done, because it’s a real documentary about a real company that struggling to become successful. Our conference, Social Media Marketing World, had 3100 people there in 2017, and we want to grow that by 62% year over year, and then another 100% a year over year. We want to get to 10,000 people on the conference of 2019, which would more than triple our growth in 24 months. And we hope that, by sharing this journey, people will help us accomplish our mission, and a lot of people would find it entertaining, exciting, and learn from it along the way. Michael’s Career I started as a writer, and then in 2009 I did what I call ‘my great experiment’ when I was able to secure the website, SocialMediaExaminer.com, for 10 dollars. And I connected some of my friends that were writers and encouraged them to write for this movement that I was starting that was called Social Media Examiner. In 2009, there were not a lot of websites that were giving out a lot of free information and this thing just took off, and in months, all of a sudden I had a crazy successful blog in my hand! And then the rest is history… right? From that blog we were able to launch online conference, and then a physical conference, and then a podcast and live show; all these things that we are doing today, over eight years later. Michael’s customers Anyone who understands the importance of doing marketing with social media, so it’s typically somebody who is either a self-employed person who has a business and doesn’t have a lot of money, and wants to figure out how to use Social Media to grow the business or it’s somebody who works for a business, and their job is to do marketing for that business. I classify all these people as the label marketers. Social Media changes every week, this is what gives us longevity because unlike other industries, like science for example, where once you discover something that’s true, you can kind of rely on that forever; in the world of social media marketing, things change constantly and as a result, marketers need to keep up with it all and that’s where we come in. Michael’s best advice about approaching the customers I think that when you get started, you really need to talk to a lot of people to really understand what their problems are. That could be through going to an event where a lot of people that met your customers happened to be and talking with them to understand what the customers’ problems are. Biggest failure with a customer I was already very successful,...

Michael Stelzner is the CEO & Founder of Social Media Examiner, the world’s largest social media marketing resource. I read his blog every day because it’s filled with the best, most up-to-date articles and information that pertain to the world of social media. Mike is the host of the Social Media Marketing podcast. He brings on expert guests discussing strategies and tactics that will help you take your social media marketing to a new level. Mike also hosts a weekly live video show called Social Media Marketing Talk with expert commentary on the latest news of the week. In this episode, Mike shares insights into cool ways you can market your events utilizing ClickToTweet, which is one of my favorite tools. He breaks it down and even shares a cool hack that allows you to include an image. This is something I’ve never seen done before. Mike walks us through the process and I have to say, it’s quite simple. I can’t wait for you to learn about this cool tip (see screen shots in the show notes) and so much more. Your Call-To-Action Your call-to-action for this episode is to take your marketing a step further by utilizing this method of ClickToTweet on your website. The best place is on a Thank You page. This can be for an event, like the way Mike uses it. Or when someone signs up for your webinars (I used it for that) and even purchasing your books or services. There’s no end to the ways you can use this method. It all start with ClickToTweet. Try this and let me know what you think by sending me a tweet @MadalynSklar. Today I’m thrilled to have Michael Stelzner on the show. Now I was introduced to Mike by my friend Darren Rowse of Problogger and I’m really glad that he made the intro. Mike runs the ridiculously popular site Social Media Examiner which gets an insane amount of traffic. I’m just going to make a rough estimate here but I’m guessing somewhere in the 1.1 million uniques per month range. He’s got over a half million email subscribers and a half million Facebook fans for his page. Mike also runs the largest social media conference in the world called Social Media […] The post 151: How Mike Stelzner Created A Multi Million Dollar Social Media Marketing Site And Conference appeared first on MyWifeQuitHerJob.com.

Do you know what the most important skill in business is? Persuasive communication. And persuasive communication is at the heart of great Copywriting. Today, a reading from my forthcoming book, How to Write Copy That Sells. Click here to download or listen to this episode now. Spiritual Foundations How to lead like Jesus. Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that His hour had come that He should depart from this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end. And supper being ended, the devil having already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray Him, Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come from God and was going to God, rose from supper and laid aside His garments, took a towel and girded Himself. After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded. Then He came to Simon Peter. And Peter said to Him, “Lord, are You washing my feet?” Jesus answered and said to him, “What I am doing you do not understand now, but you will know after this.” Peter said to Him, “You shall never wash my feet!” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me.” Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!” Jesus said to him, “He who is bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and you are clean, but not all of you.” For He knew who would betray Him; therefore He said, “You are not all clean.” So when He had washed their feet, taken His garments, and sat down again, He said to them, “Do you know what I have done to you? You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you. Most assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him. If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them. Social media marketing is here, it's here to stay, and it's bigger than ever. But who can keep up with the trends, the new networks, and the shifting sands of strategy and tactics? How do you know what to spend your time on, and what's a waste? Who could possibly sort through this mass of possible opportunities or pitfalls? You- that's who! All you really need is the 2015 Social Media Marketing Industry Report. In today's episode, I'll tell you where to get it, why it's important, what to look for, and how you can use this valuable piece of marketing intelligence to catapult your social media marketing forward in the remaining half of the year! Other reasons to keep listening include: How to write a $10 Million sales page… Why you can have hope no matter how big your challenges… And your last chance to get a free training video on how to start, run, and grow a business that changes the world. Spiritual Foundations You Lose Nothing Because God Restores Everything No matter what situation you find yourself in, you can be assured that God sees you, cares for you, and will provide for you… and beyond that, he will restore what the enemy has stolen, and set you up better than you were before! In the Old Testament, God protected Hagar and her son Ishmael when she was cast out from Abraham's house. Hagar called Him “the God who sees me”. While Job was severely tested, God did restore everything he lost and more. When Joseph was sold into slavery by his brothers, unknown to them he rose to rule over all of Egypt. He was not bitter, but said, “What you intended for evil, God intended for good, so that I could save your lives and many others.” And in Romans 8:28 the Apostle Paul tells us “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good…” So remember, no matter what may come your way, God is for you and not against you, he will restore you to better than you were before. His grace is bigger than any setback, problem, or circumstance, even the ones that seem impossible. He sees you. He restores and heals. What the enemy intends for your evil, God will repurpose for your good. And He makes ALL THINGS work together for your good! Tip Of the Week Would you like to know how to write a $10 Million sales page? I'm going to show you just that next Tuesday, June 2, 2015 in a special free Masterclass. This is a live training, so I'm sorry – if you're listening to this after June 2, 2015, this opportunity has already passed you by. That's why it's a good idea to listen to the podcast every week, and subscribe to my email newsletter! We only have 1,000 seats available for this Masterclass, so register now at https://rayedwards.com/masterclass. Feature Presentation: The State of Social Media Marketing The 2015 Social Media Marketing Industry Report is out. The purpose of the report is to show how marketers are using social media to grow their businesses. The report is authored by Michael Stelzner, the founder of Social Media Examiner. It's their 7th annual report, 52 pages, and over 80 charts. It's all easy to understand and digest, and Mike takes the time to point out the “not-so-obvious” findings. Over 3,700 marketers responded to the survey that produced this report, and I don't know of any other source from which you can get this kind of data. Why This Report Is Of Value To You I highly recommend you get the report for yourself and start digesting it. Most of your peers will probably ignore it… and of those who download it, most will not read it… and of those who do read it, only a small, single-digit percentage of them will actually take the time to understand it and reason through the implications. Place yourself in that small minority, and you give yourself an enormous success advantage you can start capitalizing on immediately. I'll give you a top line taste of what can be gained from this report in moment, but let me echo some advice form the report itself. This information is for you regardless of your experience level with social media marketing. If you're experienced with social media, compare yourself against other marketers, see which platforms they're looking at next and determine whether you're achieving the same benefits as your more experienced peers. If you're a beginner (or really any level), take a look at the time commitment, benefits and platforms that your peers are using. • The time commitment: The report examines the weekly hours marketers invest in their social media efforts. This analysis will be helpful for marketers just getting started or those seeking support staff. • The benefits of social media marketing: This section of the study reveals all of the major advantages marketers are achieving with their social media efforts. It also looks at how weekly time invested and years of experience affect the results. • Most-used social media platforms: Discover which platforms marketers are using and how their usage will change this year. The report also examines which platforms experienced marketers are using. Other interesting, and more advanced topics in the report include… • Social media networks people want to learn more about: In this section, you'll discover the social platforms that marketers are most interested in learning about. • The report also examines the role of content in social media marketing, paid social media and how marketers respond when new networks emerge. • Plus questions such as how business-to-business (B2B) companies differ from business-to-consumer (B2C) companies and whether the size of a business has any bearing on results. • Perhaps most interesting of all, the report also highlights significant changes since last year's study. I Know What You REALLY Want… Here Are The Top Nuggets From The Report Okay, I know how it is. You're busy and you want me to read the report FOR you and give you a summary. And that's what I'm going to do. But it would be a huge mistake for you to leave it there. You see, there is a very deep and valuable advantage and opportunity for you in the report, but to make it work you're going to have to get the report and mine this particular pot of gold for yourself. I'll explain all that shortly, but for now, let me satisfy your curiosity with some of the primary findings… • Twitter, YouTube and LinkedIn hold the top spots for future plans: A significant 66% of marketers plan on increasing their use of these social networks. • Marketers want to learn most about Facebook: While 93% of marketers are using Facebook, 68% want to learn more about it and 62% plan on increasing Facebook activities. • Video becoming important: A significant 57% of marketers use video in their marketing; however, 72% want to learn more about video marketing and plan on increasing their use of video. • Podcasting on growth trajectory: Only 10% of marketers are involved with podcasting, yet 26% plan on increasing their podcasting activities and 43% of marketers want to learn more about podcasting. • Facebook and LinkedIn are the two most important social networks for marketers. When allowed to only select one platform, 52% of marketers selected Facebook, followed by LinkedIn at 21%. • Most marketers aren't sure their Facebook marketing is effective: Only 45% of marketers think that their Facebook efforts are effective. • Tactics and engagement are top areas marketers want to master: At least 91% of marketers want to know the most effective social tactics and the best ways to engage their audience with social media. The Hidden Opportunity I Spoke Of Earlier Perhaps the most opportunity-rich information in the report are the top 5 social media questions marketers want answered. The top social media questions marketers want answered can be summarized in the following keywords: tactics, engagement, measurement, audience and tools—in that order. But do not stop here. If you are a social media marketing provider or agency, if you are a consultant or coach, or i you train people in social media marketing, this is the vein of pure gold you're looking for. Here, in this section of the report, you will find the topics for your next consulting sessions, online courses, blog posts, and podcasts! My advice: go beyond the obvious top line conclusions, spend some time reading an digesting, and think. Think about the following: How can you take advantage of the trends for promoting your own business? How can you model the best behavior for you clients and students? What connections can you draw that take data from different areas of this report and tie them together into new strategic and tactical approaches to marketing incorporating social media. And then dig deeper: how can marry your specific knowledge of your target market with the trends and current needs of marketers revealed in this report, and use that mixture to create new rocket fuel for marketing programs? Thinking of this nature will give you an advantage your competitors will not even understand, let alone duplicate. For those of you intrepid enough to actually heed my advice, you'll find more than 80 charts that visually convey some fascinating findings. For example, the report looks at which social networks are used by those who invest the most time in social media marketing, the benefits achieved by those who've been at this for years and how marketers respond to new social networks. There's much more to be mined from this report. I've only scratched the surface. What most will fail to realize is what a generous gift Mike Stelzner gives us with this report. In fact, I am honestly going to try and convince him to charge for this. An independent study, commissioned to retrieve the same level of response, exactness of data, and rigorous construction of the questions to yield unbiased, statistically reliable results would surely be a minimum six-figure investment. You get all this for free. At least until I can talk Mike out of the crazy tree, and get him start charging something for this treasure chest… which is filled with treasure maps to other treasure chests! Someday. But in the words of Aragorn, son of Arathorn, not this day. For now, it's still free, so go download your report now at: http://www.socialmediaexaminer.com/report2015/ What is the most interesting and useful insight you got from the new report? May I Ask A Favor? Subscribe to the show in iTunes and give us a rating and review. Go ahead and subscribe now, and give us your star rating and review on iTunes. Last week I was having a new Internet line installed at my home. I explained to the workers, all under 30, that I needed a period of quiet during the middle of the day because I was about to record a podcast. "What's a podcast?" one of the young crew asked. "It's an Internet radio show," I explained. "Oh," he said, "I have heard a few of those. But what's a podcast exactly?" I then launched into an impromptu lesson on podcasts but it dawned on me that this fellow, like about 20 percent of Americans, was indeed listening to a podcast ... and like the majority of the world, he didn't know what a podcast is. This underscores some very interesting research revealed on the latest episode of The Marketing Companion. Calling a podcast a podcast is confusing to many people. We don't call an online magazine a printcast. It's still a magazine. We don't call an online newspaper a journalcast. It's still a newspaper. Why do we treat audio differently? One podcaster who has broken away from the podpack is Mike Stelzner, founder of Social Media Examiner and the talented host of the SME podcast. "We call the Social Media Marketing podcast an on-demand talk radio show," he said, "because everyone knows what talk radio is, and on-demand is an easy way to distinguish it from traditional radio." This might seem trivial until you hear the explanation from my podcast ... er ... on demand talk radio show ... co-host Tom Webster and why this nuance might be a huge hurdle to mainstream growth. I learned something important through this discussion and I think you will too. Let's dive in, shall we? Please support our extraordinary sponsors. You're smart. You never believed the people who said “there's no money in Social Media”. You thought the people who said Social was all about “pictures of what people had for lunch” or “videos about cats” were missing the point. Yes, those things are popular on Social Media… and it's also true that Social Media is a vital marketing medium that can bring big rewards, monetary and otherwise when done right. Just ask Taylor Swift, Oreo, the folks behind the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, or even President Barack Obama. Just knowing Social Media Marketing is important, however, is not enough. You must know how to do it right – or at least how to not do it wrong. Today's episode will address what I consider to be the 5 Social Media Marketing Mistakes you are most likely making right now… and how to fix them. Tip Of the Week I have not one, but three tips for you this week! Tip #1: Smart Podcast Player First, I'm very excited about the new podcast player we are using on our website. You know, that little “play” button you click to hear audio on the web, such as listening to podcast episode? Up until now we were using a very primitive podcast player. But we just switched the Pat Flynn's Smart Podcast Player. Pat created the player for his own enormously popular podcast. Here's what he says about it: I created this custom player with my team because I wanted a better listening experience for my audience. They deserve the best. After sharing the player with my audience, I received hundreds of requests from other podcasters who wanted to use the player too, and so the Smart Podcast Player was born. You put an immense amount of time and care into creating your podcast; the player you use should reflect that. My team and I have put the same attention and care into building the Smart Podcast Player. I know that you (and your listeners) will love it. Some of the features and benefits: Works with any feed, from any host, anywhere. Looks amazing the design is clean and modern, and you can customize it to match your site perfectly. Lets your listeners explore, discover, and share. The Smart Podcast Player has an interactive library that allows your listeners to explore past episodes in your backlist without interrupting the episode that’s playing. The player also empowers your listeners to search your backlist by tag, download their favorite episodes in MP3 format, and share episodes with their friends. Your library of episodes updates automatically anytime you publish a new episode to your feed. All metadata is available, episode description included. Your listeners can control the speed of the currently playing episode just like they enjoy doing when they use today’s latest podcast mobile apps. It's also got rave reviews from podcasters like John Lee Dumas, Michael Hyatt, and Jaime Tardy of the Eventual Millionaire podcast. And this one is a big deal that I think doesn't get enough emphasis: there's a direct “Subscribe In iTunes” button on the player. The number of subscribers plays a big role in how your show ranks on iTunes. And now your podcast player can encourage those subscriptions, as in the picture you see below (you can actually click that picture and subscribe to this podcast… go ahead… I'll wait…) You can see the entire library of The Ray Edwards Show in the Smart Podcast Player, so you can see it in action, by clicking here. And once you've decided you can't live without the player, check it out at SmartPodcastPlayer.com Tip #2: Twitter Power 3.0 You may know Joel Comm as a New York Times Best-Selling author, and as a top social media influencer. I know him as the guy who convinced me to write and publish my first book, Writing Riches. Much of my success is tied to that book. It was published because of Joel's encouragement and advice. We have been good friends for many years now. I don't know Dave Taylor, but I have benefitted from his work at AskDaveTaylor.com many, many times (just as millions of others have). Joel and Dave just launched their co-authored book, Twitter Power 3.0, and I recommend you click here and buy your copy now. Twitter Power (the previous version) is already the world’s top-selling book on the subject of Twitter. It was endorsed by Tony Robbins (who, by the way, has 2.58 million followers on Twitter). This newly updated super-guide, Twitter Power 3.0 will show smart businesses and entrepreneurs how to use Twitter to massively grow their reach. And this new, improved, cutting-edge book is endorsed by none other than Guy Kawasaki, who says, “This book will give you a big head start toward mastering Twitter from two people who already have.” The book is also endorsed and praised by Robert Scoble, Mari Smith, Chris Brogan, Jay Baer, John Lee Dumas, Michael Stelzner, Kim Garst, and other top social media influencers. Look, you don't need anyone's expensive “Twitter Course” or “coaching” – you can dominate your market on Twitter simply following the advice in this book. Inside Twitter Power 3.0, you'll discover how to: Grow your number of followers PLUS increase your engagement on Twitter Make your content to go viral (you’ll be shocked at what works and what doesn’t!) Measure the Twitter metrics that matter most and fine-tune your strategy to maximize your results In celebration of the launch of Twitter Power 3.0, Joel and Dave are offering some generous bonuses when you order your copy of the book today. The bonuses you get include a brand new eBook called Social Poetry 2 (which features the top marketers/influencers online… even I make a brief appearance in the book). So, to get more followers and influence on Twitter, start by ordering your copy of Twitter Power 3.0. And, of course, claim all the free bonuses that come with your purchase. I don't make a single penny for recommending this book to you. The links in this post are not affiliate links. I just happen to think this is an excellent book, and I think you need to read it (if you want to be successful with Twitter). Tip #3: Social Media Marketing World 2015 Session Recordings Was traveling to San Diego for Social Media Marketing World 2015 just not an option for you this year? If so, you missed the marketing event of the year. I had the privilege of leading one of the tracks at the event, and I soaked up a ton of great knowledge from the other sessions. Below is a picture of me with my personal Mastermind Group, the Green Room Mastermind. In the photo is Pat Flynn, Cliff Ravenscraft, Mike Stelzner, Mark Mason, and Leslie Samuel. This is the first time we have all been in the same physical space at one time! (L-R) Mark Mason, Mike Stelzner, Pat Flynn, Cliff Ravenscraft, Leslie Samuel I know, I know, you're feeling left out. Spiritual Foundations Satan Is No Longer Allowed To Accuse You Of Anything Recently a friend expressed worry that his troubles were because of Satan. My friend said to me, “I just know this problem is happening because Satan is the ‘accuser of the brethren', making sure God is aware of my every sin.” He was referring to a passage from Revelation 12:10: “Then I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, “Now salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren, who accused them before our God day and night, has been cast down.” (NKJV) Many people believe that this is still going on, and that the “casting down” comes at the end of time. But that is not true. A careful reading of Revelation in the context of the rest of the New Testament shows that this “casting down” of the “accuser of the brothers” has already happened. “Who shall bring a charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies.” Romans 8:33 In book of Job, Satan is in God's presence and us griping about Job (see Job 1:6-12). Now here's the question I have about this scene: what the heck is Satan doing at God's throne? That's God's most holy place. How can Satan be allowed there? It's pretty simple: we gave him our pass to the throne room of heaven. Adam bowed to the will of Satan in the Garden of Eden in Genesis 3, and that means's Satan was able to take Adam's place and could come before God. Satan became “the accuser of the brothers” – he did nothing but bend God's ear with lies about us. Then something amazing happened. The “last Adam”, Jesus Christ, gave his own blood and cleansed the things of Heaven (Hebrews 9:22-24). The work Jesus did, which he called “finished”, redeemed the place where Satan stood before God. There's no place in heaven for Satan. He cannot come before God and accuse you or me. Those days are over. The next bit of good news is who is in God's presence today – and that would be JEsus. He is there on our behalf (Hebrews 9:24). And so now who can condemn or accuse us? “Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.” Romans 8:34 Listen, as I read the book of Job I see it contains many theological knots. I can't untie half of them. I do know that much of it is bad theology, presented as just that. God himself says that Job's friends spoke wrongly about Him, invalidating much of the text as theology. Job wanted someone to plead on his behalf. (Job 9:33) We actually have what Job desired – we have Jesus as our representative, and he is interceding for us (1 Timothy 2:5). So… what does Satan do now? The only thing he can do: he comes to you and me, here on earth, and accuses us through our conscience. His only weapon is lies. His weapon is only effective if we believe the lies. He has no power. (Colossians 2:15) So if you find yourself thinking that God's will is for you to be sick, or hurting, or hungry… or that God is punishing you for your sins… don't buy into that garbage! Don't listen to Satan's lies. God justifies you, and nobody, not even the devil himself, has the power to come before God and accuse you. You, just like Jesus, have free and total access to God's throne of grace to “obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need”. (Hebrews 4:16) Revel in your righteousness, and know that all your sin-debt has been paid, you are free, and there's no one left to accuse you. Imagine yourself in the place of the woman caught in the act of adultery. Here accusers dragged her to Jesus, accusing her. He turned the accusers away and… When Jesus had raised Himself up and saw no one but the woman, He said to her, “Woman, where are those accusers of yours? Has no one condemned you?” She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said to her, “Neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more.” John 8:10-11 That's what he's saying to you and me today: “Neither do I condemn you.” Feature Presentation: Are You Making These 5 Social Media Marketing Mistakes? Social Marketing is more important now than ever. If you don't believe that, or don't understand why its true, hasten thyself over to Social Media Examiner and get the Sixth Annual Social Media Marketing Industry Report. It is 50 pages, and over 80 charts worth of data from 2,800 organized into an important and comprehensive report. It will open your eyes to just how important Social Media Marketing is to you and your business. Based on that report, Mike Stelzner gave a fantastic keynote at Social Media Marketing World 2015, where he outlined the 8 major trends all marketers must know about in 2015. After spending two and a half days at the conference last week, attending sessions, taking notes like a madman, listening to the podcasts and reading several books by presenters at the conference, plus reading a pile of articles on Social Media Examiner, I decided to create this Social Media-focused show. So here are the 5 Social Media Marketing Mistakes you are most likely making… and how to fix them. Pronto. Social Media Marketing Mistake #1 Failure to have a Strategic Social Media Marketing System. “Strategic” means: the identification of long-term or overall aims and interests and the means of achieving them. “System” means: a set of principles or procedures according to which something is done; an organized scheme or method. Thus, a Strategic Social Media Marketing System is: A set of principles and procedures of using Social Media with the overall aim of increasing the profitability of the enterprise. Do you have such a system? Is it written down? Does the document clearly define the intent of the system? Does it define, step-by-step, how to activities are to be conducted to achieve the Strategic Objective? Could anyone on your staff or team execute the instructions based solely on the written procedure? If not, you don't have a system. How To Fix Mistake #1: Develop a written document that spells out the principles and procedures of using Social Media with the overall aim of increasing the profitability of the enterprise. Social Media Marketing Mistake #2 Failure to have a consistent branding presence across Social Media Platforms. Your images, logos, and profile pages look different across all the different services, including your own blog. Your logo, colors, and design scheme are just a hodgepodge of what you used at the time you signed up for any given network. How To Fix Mistake #2: Get a professional logo design and headshot made, if you don't already have them. Know what your design color palette is and use it. Then, change your images, logos, and profile pages should look alike across all the different services, including your own blog. Your logo, colors, and design scheme should always match. And if you have a personal brand, use the same headshot on all the services… and make sure it looks like you! Social Media Marketing Mistake #3 Failure to understand the different Social Media services. The rules – both written and unwritten – differ from service to service. the proper way to be a valued member of each community is to understand its culture and behave accordingly. Proper behavior looks different on LinkedIn than on Google+ or Facebook, and Facebook profile etiquette is different from the etiquette for Facebook pages. And Twitter is different from all the rest. Unfortunately, many (most) marketers have never taken the time to really learn the culture of the networks they are part of. These same marketers then don't understand why their “social” marketing “doesn't work.” Here's a clue: If everywhere you go, you smell body odor, you might be the one who needs a shower. How To Fix Mistake #3: Study the most popular users of each service. Watch their behavior and interaction. Read a guide on the networks you want to be part of. You can find definitive guides and up-to-the-minute tips at Social Media Examiner for free. One powerful and important insight: spend most of your time on Social Networks being social. Interact. Respond. And don't make the mistake of being self-promotional all the time. My rule of thumb is to try to be 90% sharing and helpful, and to use only 10% of my Social Media activity to directly promote. Now go out on the playground… and play nice! Social Media Marketing Mistake #4 Failure to have a presence on the most important Social Media sites. Many marketers sign up for ever Social Media network, don't dig deep into any of them, and so have a lackluster presence everywhere. Yuck. Don't do this. It just makes you appear to be one of the mediocre masses. You shouldn't – and can't – have a presence on all Social Media networks. How To Fix Mistake #4: I know I will get arguments on this, but in my opinion, here are the networks you should focus on, in the order of priority, from most important to least (but I think they are all important). Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Instagram Pinterest Google+ As I said, I know some will want to argue with be about this list, but I think it's right on target. Feel free to differ with me in the comments… or on Social Media! Social Media Marketing Mistake #5 Failure to use strong visual content in your Social Media Marketing. Most Social Media Marketers are focused on words. As a copywriter, I understand. But copywriting and writing in general isn't really about the medium – it's about the message. If you're focused only on the text, you're missing out on huge momentum and potential profit. More and more, people are consuming visual content. How To Fix Mistake #5: Get visual – especially video-visual! One of the hottest trends, according to the data from the Social Media Marketing Industry Report (and Mike Stelzner's keynote), is video. In particular, native video. Meaning video that is posted and hosted on the network distributing it. The networks seem to be giving preference to video that is uploaded via their own network interface. So use Facebook to upload your video to Facebook, instead of uploading it to YouTube and linking to it on Facebook. The same is true of other networks as well. And for goodness sakes, don't forget pictures and those “quote memes” that seem so popular. You can make your own using Canva or Wordswag. And finally, there are infographics. If you want to capture complex ideas in a simple way people love, use infographics. There are a lot of great tools to make them yourself, among them Canva, PikToChart, and Visual.ly. To a large extent, blogs are living, breathing things. They're a place for you to record the day-in-the-life of your brand, to explore new possibilities and take the occasional look back to see how far you've come. This is precisely what makes your blog the primary place where brand loyalty is fostered. Your posts allow your audience to come along with you and experience the development of your brand as it happens. Ideally, your blog is your audience's closest connection to you. That's why it's a good idea to step back now and then to reexamine your blog. Even if you've had a blog for a long time and your subscriber numbers are strong, it's always a good idea to find ways to breathe new life into it. Don't worry--I'm not talking about a whole new site redesign. There are lots of simple, no-cost ways to tweak, amplify and expand your blog's potential, making it more valuable for subscribers to read...and more streamlined and effective for you to use. To help us really understand what launches a blog from good to great, I've invited master blogger, Mike Stelzner, to share his insights and tips. If you don’t know Mike Stelzner yet, he’s the founder of Social Media Examiner, the world’s largest social media magazine, and the host of the top-rated podcast “Social Media Marketing.” Mike and I go way back—he offered me my first paid gig when leaving my corporate job. That feels like a lifetime ago, but in reality, it was just a few shorts years ago! You’ll also learn about a really cool way to make sure that all of your blog posts look fantastic when they are shared on Facebook. This is SO CRUCIAL to attracting new visitors to your blog! To learn how to make this happen, click here to access the special quick guide. EPISODE FREEBIE Get the Quick Guide: "How to Easily Set Up Open Graph and Make All Your Posts On Facebook Look Outstanding" FREE DOWNLOAD Mike is a goldmine of insight on creating a successful blog. Here are just a few of the things we talked about in my recent podcast episode: Choosing Content Social Media Examiner churns out huge amounts of quality content in the form of long, newsy blog posts…every single week! How do they choose what to blog about? ⇒ Run smart surveys As of my conversation with Mike, Social Media Examiner was producing their 2015 survey to find out how marketers are using social media to grow their businesses. It’s coming out soon! You'll learn about trends in mobile optimization and social integration, which content categories and social platforms to prioritize, and what to expect from the future of social media marketing. (If you can’t wait until the 2015 one comes out to see what one of these surveys looks like, click here to see the 2014 version.) The data collected in these surveys is used to decide what their audience wants more of as they design their editorial calendar for the year. This narrows down the field considerably to topics that will instantly catch on with their readers. There’s still a lot of brainstorming to be done, but it’s focused within certain categories that are important to the Social Media Examiner audience. ⇒ Reach out to great writers Make it worth their while. A lot of talented writers contribute to Social Media Examiner in exchange for their huge number of page clicks. Find out what exposure on your site can offer your writers, and start sending out feelers. If you find a couple of truly standout writers, snap them up—put them on retainer or hire them for specific blogging projects. When you can marry great content to an engaging, authentic voice, you’ve got blogging gold. ⇒ Pay attention to what your audience likes Facebook shares and “likes,” retweets and comments are important, but they aren’t always the most important. In their first couple years, Social Media Examiner would take their cues on content from the number of tweets and page views any given post received. If an article got a lot of Twitter play, for example, they would write more articles on that topic. But then they realized that page views weren’t their goal; their method of monetizing had to do with growing their email newsletter list. After tracking conversions, they started to see patterns in what brought in paying leads. Those became their new guidelines for what kind of content to produce and where to channel it. Don’t miss out on more of Mike’s priceless advice for optimizing your blog—click here to listen to Episode 44 for the full interview. Don't Be Afraid of Sending Too Many Emails Social Media Examiner is famous—some might say “notorious”—for emailing their list every single day. Here’s what Mike had to say about all those emails: ⇒ Consider the end game Statistically, most people come to your blog once and never come back. By getting them on your email newsletter, you have a chance to lure them back over and over. The daily email from Social Media Examiner teases subscribers with their great content—little 70-word blurbs that include the day’s articles and lures them back to the website. ⇒ Use FOMO to your advantage Daily emails are an implied brag, i.e. if Social Media Examiner has something to email about every day, they must have a lot going on! It creates FOMO (fear of missing out) in the subscriber—they want to stay up to date—which gets those emails opened. ⇒ Give your followers something to share Everybody wants something cool to share with their friends and followers. If you produce a lot of content, your audience will always have something to share online—“Check out this cool article I read on Social Media Examiner.” Even if they never buy a product that you have to sell they become evangelists for your brand, offering the most powerful kind of advertising: word of mouth. Recently, all those great blogs have parlayed into the Social Media Examiner Show, a podcast that comes out four times weekly and repurposes longer articles into abridged versions delivered through audio. An entirely different editorial staff handles these audio episodes, as opposed to the written ones. Obviously, it takes really rich content to be repurposed in so many ways. If you don’t have the budget or the time to manage a big editorial staff, here are Mike’s top two priorities for soliciting help in creating content that can be mined for multiple uses: ⇒ Copy editor The most important step is making sure your content is pitch perfect—you can’t have misspellings, punctuation errors or awkward, clunky, repetitive phrases. No matter how great an authority you are on your topic, misuse of the English language will undermine your readers’ respect for what you have to say. When I asked Mike which was the single most important blogging-related hire to add to your team, he answered without hesitation "A copy editor." ⇒ Graphic designer First impressions are a big deal, when it comes to content getting shared. You want something that looks beautiful wherever someone shares it—a Twitter Card, for example, is a lot more visible than a simple tweet, even one with an attached image. An Open Graph-optimized image for Facebook and Twitter will get your content optimum play on social media. Open Graph data is how Facebook decides what image to post in your feed; you can determine it yourself, instead of letting Facebook (or whoever is posting the link to your content) decide for you. One image with eye-catching typography and white space left in the right areas will draw an audience’s roving eye and get your content opened. Download our free quick guide that walks you through the process of setting up Open Graph. This free download is extremely valuable to attract even more traffic to your blog! Tracking Your Traffic You probably already know that Google Analytics will tell you what percentage of your traffic is coming from Facebook and Twitter and so on. But by using UTM tracking codes—a little extended code that goes on the end of your URL and compressing that with bit.ly—you can assign campaign-level triggers to any particular thing you do. It works like a homing device to see where your posts end up and which ones are getting the most traffic. This allows us to segment what percentage of our social traffic is coming from our own sharing versus other people out there sharing on their own. Sometimes when we try to use technology to solve problems, there's an easier way. I have a personal story about this, which happened over Thanksgiving. I was going to a friend's farm to enjoy a deep fried turkey with some friends, when we realize we didn't have enough oil. We drove over to the grocery store, only to realize neither one of us had our wallets. We couldn't pay for the oil! Being the tech-type that I am, I went through every money app on my phone - Paypal, my banking app, Apple Pay, and others. I wasn't able to use any of them to pay for the oil at this grocery store.Just when we thought we were out of luck, my friend made a novel suggestion:"Why don't we just ask someone?"Somewhat ashamed that I hadn't thought of this myself, we were able to convince someone to lend us the $15 to buy the oil with the promise that we would pay him back (more than double what he spent for his trouble). Instead of using the "Uber" for whatever app on your phone to get something done, why not just pick up the phone and call someone? Or ask a friend? Summary On this episode of Rhodes to Success I interview Michael Stelzner, founder and CEO of a multi-million dollar social media blog called Social Media Examiner. Michael also hosts one of iTunes most popular business podcasts and was once known as the King of White Papers. Listen to this episode to learn how Michael propelled his way to success using the power of relationship building! Main Questions Asked - Why is it so important early on to build relationships? - How did building relationships help you grow Social Media Examiner so fast? - What is your take on why it is important to leverage multiple content platforms? - Do you think that using your personal brand hurts or helps people when trying to get noticed? - How frequently should you post on Facebook and Twitter and what is the etiquette? Key Lessons Learned Relationship Building - People like to work with people they know, like, and trust - Build relationships with the right people way in advance - We all have something of value to other people. If we can figure out what they need and help with that, that can become a profitable relationship for both parties - Just asking someone for an interview (or favor) doesn't always work. Sometimes you need to offer value first without asking for anything in return. Content Marketing - Be realistic about the time you have as a business owner and what you will spend that time doing - In the beginning choosing one platform such as podcast, video or written is okay but in the long run you should diversify - Remember that there are different kinds of people that are interested in consuming different types of content - On average people spend 1-3 minutes reading a blog post and generally only skim the content (more time is spent consuming other formats) - As your business gains momentum it is worthwhile experimenting with more than one form of content marketing Branding - There is a difference in being the spokesperson for the brand and the brand itself (personal branding vs spokesperson for the brand) - Not everybody might like ‘you' as the person if you are the brand which means you may lose business - If you are not the ‘brand' itself then people have the opportunity to rally around the business identity and not you - When it comes to selling, it is easier to sell a non-personal brand - As a personal brand the challenge is when you get to the point where everybody wants a piece of you and you can't grow your business Social Media Posting Guidelines - As an example; Social Media Examiner posts 5-7 times a day on Facebook, 20-30 times on Twitter and publishes 10 articles a week (Keep in mind that SME is a publisher) - Before posting or setting a schedule, ask yourself: What am I trying to accomplish? - Posting content is about what your audience finds interesting and what you find acceptable - Post interesting content that people find of value 2-3 times a day (non promotional.) If that works increase the frequency and monitor for negative consequences then adjust - Lists come in handy as a way to privatize your content into sub groups Thank you for listening! On this episode of the Online Marketing Made Easy Podcast, we talk all about Twitter. Since I am not a Twitter expert, I have invited my friend and mentor, Michael Stelzner, on the show to talk about some very specific strategies he uses to promote his live and online events with Twitter. Mike would say that he too is not a Twitter expert, but I would disagree because he is doing things on Twitter that are getting some serious results - and he’s been perfecting his Twitter strategy for many, many years, so in my book, he’s a pro. For those of you who might not know Mike, he is the founder of the best social media site around, Social Media Examiner, which he launched in October of 2009, which has exploded, to say the least. Last year more than 7.5 million people visited the site. He's the author of two books (Launch & Writing White Papers) and is host of the Social Media Marketing Podcast. He also founded the parenting blog MyKidsAdventures.com. 5 Strategic Ways to Promote with Twitter 1. Transactional Tweets This type of tweet has a psychological component to it. When people have just made a purchase or signed up for a newsletter, they're poised to take action, and are more likely to do the next thing you ask them to do. Therefore, as soon as the transaction is complete, send them to a thank you page, and on the page, add a text link with a request. For instance, you may have a text link that says something like, "Click here to tweet your excitement about (coming to an event, a course they just purchased, etc.). When they click on the link, have it open up a pre-populated tweet that says something like, "I'm attending/just purchased. . ." Be sure to include a link to the event or item being tweeted about. 2. Verbal Tweets Podcast listeners are often on the go. They may be listening from the gym, while they're driving, etc, so give them a URL that is easy to remember. Mike directs people to go to SocialMediaExaminer.com/love. I actually stole this idea from Mike, and on occasion in my podcast you'll hear me ask you to go to AmyPorterfield.com/love. If you click on that link, you'll see that it opens up a window with a pre-populated tweet about how much they love my podcast. This is a great way to get your podcast listeners to spread the word about your podcast! 3. Shout-Out Tweets Shout-out tweets are a great way to give love to someone! An example of how Mike uses this technique is that he lists all of the speakers for his events and asks people to click on the name of their favorite presenter. When they do, again, a pre-populated tweet opens up that says something like, "Hey [name], I'm really looking forward to meeting you at [event]." 4. Affiliate Tweets Write up 10-15 different tweets that promote your product or event, and put them on a blog page or in an email. All people have to do is add their affiliate link to the tweets you've crafted, and they can then easily be shared. The easier you make things, the more likely people are to share! You can use this same strategy even if you don't have affiliates, but have other offerings that you want your audience to help you promote. 5. Custom Tweets Social share buttons such as Digg Digg have been around for awhile, but when people use them, they promote only the specific page or post the person is on. But you may not want the person driving traffic to the page they are on, such as on the page with information on hotels for an event that is being promoted. The solution is to craft custom tweets, and then embed that code on any page. This enables you to include a link to the page you want people to go to, regardless of the page they tweeted from. This also gives great social proof because instead of having several Twitter buttons with smaller tweet counts, when you use the widget, the tweet count is aggregated. Hashtags In the final third of the show, Michael dove deep into how to best use Hashtags on Twitter, as well as shared some of his favorite Twitter tools.
On this episode of the Online Marketing Made Easy Podcast, the focus is how to streamline the planning phase of your business so that you get all your goals set so that you’ll be ready for the New Year. If you do so, you can hit the ground running and get your year off to a great start! As I was planning this episode, I started to wonder how other people -- specifically the people I admire who are getting big results in their online marketing businesses -- actually get things done and how they plan and set their goals. Instead of just wonder, I reached out and asked them! Specifically, I asked Michael Hyatt, Pat Flynn, Melanie Duncan, Chris Ducker and Michael Stelzner how they plan for the New Year. Take the Time to Focus on Your Business During this episode, I want you to take this time to really focus on your business. My hope for you is that you actually take these tips and strategies and put them to action right away. Goal Setting Tip #1: Get Very Specific Before I get into the specifics of getting very specific, I want you to do a quick exercise. First, grab a piece of paper and fold it in half. What Worked in Your Business? On one half of the paper, write what was great or what worked well for you this year. What got you excited? What did you love doing? What did your customers love? What made you money? Get really clear on what worked, what didn’t, and what you really enjoyed. This is important because the emotions behind the work you do play a big part in your success. Before you even you even think about writing down goals for new things you want to do, first focus on enhancing, improving, and optimizing what already worked for you this year. What I personally realized when I did this exercise is that I need to focus more on what is already working. For example, I already have three successful programs, so instead of creating more programs, I’m going to focus on making the programs I already have even better. What Didn’t Work in Your Business? On the other half of the paper, write what needs to improve or what didn’t work. What were the failures? (We all have them!) What frustrated you or stopped you from moving forward? What should you stop doing? It can be just as important to think about what you need to stop doing as it is to plan for what you want to accomplish. As an example, I plan to travel and speak less in 2014 than I did in 2013, because I ended up being away from my family more than I wanted to this year and also found it hard to accomplish some of my more important goals since I was on the go so much. Set Your Goals Once you’ve done the above exercise, it’s time to set your goals! Here’s an important goal-setting tip for you: fit all of your goals onto one page. If you write pages and pages of goals, you’ll be overwhelmed, and you won’t likely focus on all of them anyway, so keep your goals simple and concise. Here’s what to include on one-page goal setting sheet 1. Revenue projections The first thing on my list is all of my revenue projects, specifically how much money I’m going to make, and where that money is coming from. While it may seem like revenue shouldn’t be the top goal, my good friend, Stu McLaren helped change my perspective on making money. He says, “Money is a leverage tool for impacting more lives than we could ever reach on a personal level.” I love that, because not only is it important to make money to provide for my own family, this perspective gives me a higher purpose for making money. Since this is a top priority for a business, it’s important to not only list how much money you plan to make, but to also project how you plan to accomplish that goal. As an example, for myself personally, I’ve planned out income funnels such as what I’ll make through my programs, through affiliate partnerships, etc. and I have funnels set up inside of Infusionsoft that sends information about my programs in a strategic way to the people on my email list. Being strategic in this way helps me know how most of my income will be generated. If your business is newer, you may not be able to project the source of your income as well. I couldn’t have done it myself two years ago. But at the very least you can set some revenue goals for different programs, products and services you have. 2. Contributions In addition to setting revenue goals, it’s important to set goals for the contributions you want to make. For instance, you may set a goal to contribute a certain amount to charity. That’s something I was able to do in a big way for the first time this year. It felt really good to do it and I definitely want to do it in an even bigger way next year. Another way I want to contribute is to connect more with my customers, prospects, past customers, and peers -- people that I connect with on a regular basis but don’t typically see in real life. So one thing my team is doing is starting a thank-you card a day campaign. We’re also going to be focused on doing things to wow our customers in unexpected ways. For instance, we may send flowers, or I may on occasion pick up the phone and call someone. And of course I plan to give a lot in terms of the free content I put out on a regular basis. So be sure to take the time to think about contributions you want to make, whether that be in a financial sense, or through giving in other ways. 3. My Special Focus It’s easy to run so many different directions in your business that you fail to accomplish the most important things. Because of this, I actually put, “Podcast Perfection” on my one-page goal sheet. The reason I chose this is because I’ve completed a full year of podcasting and I LOVE it, but I haven’t focused on it as much as I’d like, so I’m going to make it a big focus in the New Year. Having a separate section for my podcast on my goal planning sheet helps me to focus on planning goals that are specific to my podcast and figuring out how I’m going to reach those goals. So think about the big area you want to focus on it and include a section on your goal planning sheet for that specific thing. 4. Focused Foundation Strategies This is where I’m most specific. For instance, one thing on the Focused Foundation Strategies section of my goal planning sheet is to send out an email to my list every Thursday, and I’ve even blocked out time on my calendar for writing all of the emails for each month. I’ve also planned out the rest of my content, including everything from blog posts to program updates in a similar way, again blocking out time on my calendar to make sure it happens. Now here’s a goal planning tip from one of our special guests, Pat Flynn Write it down, break it down, take it down. Pat’s goal planning tip consists of three simple sentences: 1. Write it down. Write down your goals. When you write them down, your goals become clearer and you have something specific to work toward. In addition to this, when you write your goals down, you have something you can visibly see. 2. Break it down. Take each big goal you’ve written down and break them into mini-goals. Big goals can be intimidating which leads to procrastination. But when you break them into mini-goals, they are much easier to accomplish. 3. Take it down. Take those mini-goals you’ve written and crush them. Take them down, one by one! Goal Setting Tip #2: Stack Your Goals What I mean by stacking your goals is to create your big picture goals and then create a stack of mini goals that will get you to your big goals. What I need to do from there, there's a little bit more work that needs to be done, I need to stack my goals, make those mini-goals so they'll lead up to the big goals. For example, if I have a big goal of growing my email list by 50,000 in a year, I need to have some mini-goals such as webinars for list building to reach that goal. I have some more help with this tip, because the idea of these mini goals seem to be a hot topic with my special guests. Now a goal-planning tip from another one of my special guests, Chris Ducker. Focus on one goal at a time. Chris’ tip is shared in story form and is all about his own experience as someone who went from working 12-14 hours per day in 2009 to becoming a virtual CEO. He did this through focusing on one big thing that he wanted to let go of at a time, with a different focus each month For instance, the in January 2010, he focused on getting his email under control, and handled by someone other than himself. In February he started hiring people to replace himself in various areas. In March he worked on getting himself off the training floor, and so on. In his own words, Chris states, “My tip here, really, above and beyond everything else is to set that big goal up for the whole year. What it is, it doesn't really matter. It could be starting a new business, it could be launching a speaking career, it could be producing a new product for a new service for your following online. It doesn't really matter. But create that one big goal and start breaking it down into mini-goals that you then achieve on a regular basis as the year goes by. It will make you feel good, it will make you feel as if you're achieving something every month, every quarter, whatever the case may be, and ultimately you should go ahead and achieve that main goal over the year as well.” While Chris didn’t use the word, “stacking,” he’s definitely a fan of the stacking effect where you stack mini-goals to reach the big picture goal. You might want to try coming up with one epic goal for the year and then creating 12 mini-goals to reach the big goal, and focus on one of the smaller goals each month. Bonus Tip: Be Very Protective of Your Time! I want you to get very deliberate on how you spend your time. Everyone I know that's highly successful, including all of these special guests I have on the show today, are very deliberate about how they spend their time. I can promise you that many of them say no more often than they say "yes." Being protective of your time will help you reach the big scary goals you’ve set. My next guest, Melanie Duncan provides great insight on the topic of setting big scary goals, and the three types of goals everyone should set. Melanie starts off by stating that most goal setting books and audios will tell you to set super ambitious goals, and the problem with that is that when you wake up the next morning and look at them, it’s very intimidating. Because of this, it’s better to set smaller goals and you’ll feel motivated to tackle them. Melanie has learned that when she accomplishes the smaller goals, she feels fantastic and motivated to then tackle bigger things. A mutual friend of both me and Melanie, James Wedmore says you should set a goal that you’ll hit no matter what, a more challenging, but very doable goal, and a “hairy scary” goal that is way out there. You’re bound to accomplish at least one of the goals, and feel good about it, even if you don’t manage to accomplish the most difficult one. An important thing that Melanie touched on is the emotions behind the goal. You have to consider how your goals make you feel, because your emotions impact your ability to accomplish the goal. One thing I personally love doing is picking a word or theme for the year. Mari Smith does this every year. This year, instead of picking a single word, I picked a phrase, “Work less, contribute more.” This is actually a goal of my entire team. We’re going to accomplish this by working smarter and more efficiently. Speaking of a word or a theme for the new year, Mike Stelzner and his personal planning tip for this episode, takes this to a new level. His tip has to do with coming up with a company vision statement. Your vision statement can include things that aren’t yet true, but that you are working toward. That was the case for Mike’s company, Social Media Examiner, when they wrote the vision statement a year ago, but today, he can say with confidence that they’ve grown into their vision statement. Mike has the vision statement taped on the wall in his office, so he sees it every time he sits at his desk. He advises that you keep your vision statement simple and just a couple of sentences long. I love the way that Mike created a vision statement that pushed him beyond his comfort zone. Since we’re on the topic of comfort zone, I thought I would end this episode with Michael Hyatt's strategy for goal setting and his thoughts about moving out of your comfort zone. This one will really push you in ways that will make you uncomfortable, but will set you up to win. Michael states that you should set your goals outside of your comfort zone because that is where real growth begins, where solutions are, and where fulfillment resides. The trick is to make sure your goals are set high enough, but not too high. Michael suggests taking note of these three indicators to help you know that you’re on the right track: 1. Uncertainty. It’s good to be a little uncertain about how you’re going to accomplish the goal. Embrace that uncertainty, rather than running from it. 2. Fear. Most people avoid fear, and that was the case for Michael as well for a great deal of his life. But fear is an indicator that you’re getting close, and let’s you know you’re heading in the right direction. 3. A sense of inadequacy. In most cases when Michael pursues a goal that he just knows he has to achieve, he feels inadequate. This is going to be the case for anyone who is out to accomplish anything of significance. After hearing Michael’s tip, I actually had to rework some of my goals because I was playing it a little too safe. Thank you! A big thank you to all of my special guests for contributing to this episode. This episode just wouldn't have been the same without him, so big shout out to all of you. Thank you so much for taking the time to send in your goal setting and planning tips.
