BIO: Jeff Bullas is the owner of jeffbullas.com. Forbes calls him a top influencer of Chief Marketing Officers and the world's top social marketing talent. Entrepreneur lists him among 50 online marketing influencers to watch. Inc.com has him on the list of 20 digital marketing experts to follow on Twitter. STORY: Jeff bought a mattress and bedding furniture store, an area he had no experience or passion in. He did no research or did any due diligence, and within no time, he was deep in debt and had to close the store. He lost everything, including his marriage and the family home. LEARNING: Don't start a business unless you have expertise and passion in that industry. Running a business is not all about the money. “Just start. Create and share your craft, and then the world will show up.”Jeff Bullas Guest profilehttps://www.linkedin.com/in/jeffbullas/ (Jeff Bullas) is the owner of https://www.jeffbullas.com/ (jeffbullas.com). Forbes calls him a top influencer of Chief Marketing Officers and the world's top social marketing talent. Entrepreneur lists him among 50 online marketing influencers to watch. Inc.com has him on the list of 20 digital marketing experts to follow on https://twitter.com/jeffbullas (Twitter). Worst investment everJeff once bought a mattress and bedding furniture store on a whim. He had zero experience in running a retail business. He did zero research and due diligence. He was just thinking of the money he would make from the business. Within a day or two of buying the store, Jeff realized he'd made the wrong decision. Instead of making money, the business was chewing up cash for months on end. Jeff's bank balance was getting lower and lower. He decided to pivot to another location to get a long-term lease. Jeff hated running this business. He was in the store seven days a week. He felt trapped. Eventually, he got to a point where he realized that he needed to pull the pin. Jeff closed the doors one day and walked away. This failure caused Jeff's marriage to break. He was too deep in debt that the bank took possession of the family home, and he was left with nothing. Lessons learnedWhen starting a business, don't do it just for the money. Start a business that you're uniquely qualified to run. Ask yourself if you have the curiosity, passion, and expertise to do it. If not, don't do it. Just start. Create and share your craft, and then the world will show up. Entrepreneurship is not just about chasing the money; it's also about tapping into why you're here and why you're doing it. Andrew's takeawaysMost people fail to do their research when starting a business. They see an opportunity, get seduced by it, and end up putting aside their normal rationality because they're excited about it. Money is an outcome of your passion. Failure can shake not only your confidence but the confidence of the people around you. But, don't forget that failure is inevitable and when it happens, just walk away. Actionable adviceDon't force it. We live in a perfect world, but it doesn't always unfold in the way we want. When you try to force it, generally, bad things happen. No. 1 goal for the next 12 monthsJeff's number one goal for the next 12 months is to launch a new product and have some fun doing it. Parting words “Just start and learn. Don't try to be a perfectionist.”Jeff Bullas [spp-transcript] Connect with Jeff Bullashttps://www.linkedin.com/in/jeffbullas/ (LinkedIn) https://twitter.com/jeffbullas (Twitter) https://www.facebook.com/jeffreybullas (Facebook) https://www.youtube.com/c/TheJeffBullasShow/featured (YouTube) https://www.jeffbullas.com/ (Website) https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/the-jeff-bullas-show/id1502649184 (Podcast) Andrew's bookshttps://amzn.to/3qrfHjX (How to Start Building Your Wealth Investing in the Stock Market) https://amzn.to/2PDApAo (My Worst Investment Ever) https://amzn.to/3v6ip1Y (9 Valuation Mistakes and How to Avoid...

Imagine being a real estate developer and building a skyscraper on land someone else owns, and that the landowner has the right to change the price, the rules, and the terms of the land use at any time. That's insanity. Why would any sane developer invest so much time and money building that skyscraper when the landowner will eventually change the terms and destroy the investment? Yet, that's what nearly always happens when we build our businesses to be dependent on digital platforms other people own. In this episode, I'm going to share a story of how Harry's, the men's grooming company, built an email list with more than 100,000 subscribers in a week prior to their launch. They did this as part of their strategy to build their skyscraper on land they own, along with other great stories and secrets about platform strategy. How Harry's Built a 100K Email List in a Week Jeff Raider & Andy Katz-Mayfield, co-founders of Harry's, a men's grooming company, wanted to make a splash when their website launched. That's why they began a strong campaign to grow their email list before they even had much information about their new company out. Harry's used a strong referral campaign to grow their email list. Instead of launching their company's website, they had a simple two funnel. The landing page invited the visitor to sign up for their emails with the words “Be the first to know” above the box and “step inside” instead of the usual “confirm” or “submit” button. These word choices created a sense of urgency and intrigue. Once the visitor signed up to receive emails, they were brought to the second page of the website, which was all about their referral program. This page contained a unique URL that the visitor could share with their friends and family. Then it had a tracker to show many people you had shared with. Harry's gamified the referral process by setting up nice prizes for how many referrals a visitor made. Referring 5 friends earned you a free shaving cream. Referring 10 friends earned you a free razor. Referring 25 friends earned you a free premium razor. Referring 50 friends earned you free shaving for a year. These incremental prizes were a great method for convincing visitors to share their referral codes with their friends and family. Plus, it built excitement over the company finally opening its doors. This campaign led to Harry's receiving 100,000 email sign-ups in just one week. Raider shared that 77% of the collected emails were referrals (Source: Viral Loops). This massive email list allowed Harry's to ensure that when they finally opened, they weren't just making their opening to crickets. They had an engaged and excited audience for when their products were finally available, which helped them become highly successful. Harry's successfully built their skyscraper on land they owned, their email list, instead of on land someone else owned, such as shelf space at big box stores. They now own the relationships and can contact their customers at any time, something that would be nearly impossible to do with a big-box distribution strategy. Platforms Can Give and Platforms Can Take Years ago I worked as the Chief Revenue Officer for a company called Family Link. Family Link had created a Facebook app called We're Related that allowed users to connect with family members and show those connections on Facebook. During my first 12 months with the company, the app was wildly successful and we were able to add $5 million in revenue. The app became the 4th most popular on Facebook and had 90 million installs. Facebook saw how popular our app was and decided to create much of that functionality into the core Facebook offering. And not only that, they removed our app from the user's main profile pages who had already installed it. Essentially, Facebook decided to compete and then made it extremely difficult for us to compete. It was kind of like the landowner changing the terms of the deal after we had built the skyscraper, and it was perfectly legal because our app was built on their platform. We had built a metaphorical skyscraper on land they owned, and they could do just about anything they wanted. It is unwise to build businesses under these types of circumstances where we are not the masters of our own destinies. Facebook isn't the only platform that does this. As another example, Amazon encourages third-party vendors to sell on their platform. However, in many cases when they see a highly profitable product, they create their own version of the same product and compete. "Facebook and other social media platforms seem like a shortcut because they make it appear easy to reach new people. But the trade-off is that you're a sharecropper. It's not your land. You don't have permission to contact people; they do. You don't own an asset; they do." - Seth Godin, Best-Selling Marketing Author Building a List We Own This doesn't mean using social media sites is a bad idea. The lesson I learned from the Facebook experience was the importance of building our own lists. An email list full of customers and potential customers that have already shown interest in our products or services is one of the most valuable assets a business can own. Joe Pulizzi, the founder of Content Marketing Institute, explained it perfectly when he said: “An email list is critical because you can't build your content on rented land. So many brands and companies build their audiences on Facebook and Google+, which is fine, but we don't own those names – Facebook and Google do. If we are thinking like real media companies, the asset is in the audience.” That quote was obviously from back when Google+ was a viable platform, but it illustrates that building our businesses to be reliant on other platforms can also go out of business, and we lose all of the investment we put into building our presence on that platform. Does this mean we should avoid using social media platforms or other company's websites? Of course not. They are still a great source for growing our reach. The point I'm trying to make here is that the end goal of our platform strategy must land outside of these platforms. We need to control the relationships and communication we have with our customers and potential customers. That means we're building our email lists, gathering phone numbers and mailing addresses, and doing anything that will allow us to contact people off of the platform we found them on. “The most effective tactic is the use of email marketing to drive a real return. The reason it is effective is that people may engage and share on social, but they will buy from a sequence of emails that educate first and sell second.” - Jeff Bullas, Social Media Marketing Strategist LivingSocial Collects the Email of Every Website Visitor Here's another example: LivingSocial is a coupon company that recognizes the importance of capturing the contact information of prospective customers. They recognize that consumers who love coupons are usually willing to give up their contact information in exchange for coupons. That's why LivingSocial requires the email address of any of their website visitors. That's right. Every single visitor, if they want to see what coupons LivingSocial has to offer, must exchange their contact information to see the company's website. This is an aggressive campaign that wouldn't work for all audiences. After all, most visitors need to experience some value before they're willing to give up their email addresses. LivingSocial has found that it works for their unique customers though. One of the keys to LivingSocial's success is that the emails they send have great value to their ideal customers. For example, one of the emails the company sends out is called Instant Deals. The idea behind this is to help people find a spot to eat lunch. Right when their customers are beginning to think about what they'll eat for lunch, they receive an email with instant deals that can save them money on their meal and give them ideas for where they might like to eat. I love this example because it shows how well LivingSocial knows their customers. Both the manner in which they collect contact information and the information they send in their emails demonstrates that they know their ideal customers well. Each business has its own unique audience with its own unique desires and preferences. We need to build our platform on that. The better we know our audience, the better we'll know what kind of email capturing will work best for them and what kind of plan we should implement. Then we'll be able to provide them with effective emails that will transition them through the buyer's journey. Becoming an Influencer Authority occurs when someone takes the right steps to combine standout, trustworthy expertise in his or her field with the kind of high visibility you might often associate with a celebrity. When that happens, the expert's name becomes synonymous with the field he or she works in - Adam Witty and Rusty Shelton, Authors of Authority Marketing Most business leaders have the expertise, passion, and knowledge that we can share with others. When we share that expertise, passion, and knowledge on our own platforms we can often become an influencer in our niches. We can become an influencer and thought-leader by writing a book, speaking at events, hosting a podcast, creating YouTube videos, writing blog posts, sending an email newsletter, and more. As we provide our followers with useful and engaging content, they'll want more and more from us and we'll begin to build a true relationship. One of the reasons this works so well is because we're providing value before we ask for anything in return. Once we've established our expertise and created a loyal following, we'll be able to market our products and services in a way that is authentic and credible. Again, it's important to recognize that as we're building our followings on social media, we need to find ways to build a list of our followers we own and can contact off social media platforms. The more we can encourage our followers to visit our sites and sign up for our email lists, the stronger our foundation will be. Then we'll be building our skyscraper on land we own. Key Takeaways Here are some of the top takeaways that stood out to me from this episode: We need to build our metaphorical skyscrapers on land we own. This means growing a huge email list, membership site, or other platforms where we own the customer contact information and permission to contact customers and potential customers directly. Our social media efforts, when we're using someone else's platform, should focus on getting our customers to come to our platform, gathering their contact information, and gaining permission to market to them. The asset is the audience. In other words, the lists we build will become one of the greatest assets of our companies. We can leverage our platforms to become influencers when we share our knowledge and expertise. Becoming an influencer can give us more control over our destinies because we cannot get de-platformed. A platform then cannot block us from contacting our own followers. Want to be a Better Digital Monetizer? Did you like today's episode? Trust me, you are going to love hearing Jeff’s journey, from his failures to successes.Jeff talks about the Tall Poppy Syndrome in Australia. This syndrome is very real and it is where they do not talk about themselves very much because. In Australia, if you talk about yourself too much it's called bragging - but in the United States - It's called marketing. Jeff talks about himself and his journey through stories and real-life experiences - the Australia way:) Shortly after Jeff turned 50 he started to figure out what his purpose was. It took him a long time to discover why he was on this planet. In the middle of a divorce, he lost his family home, had to close down his business, and essentially was homeless. He had to move in with his brother and that was when his eyes were opened to how he needed to change his life. You don't learn from comfort. You learn from discomfort. In 2008, during his phase of discomfort - he found his passion - the digital world. When social media was the Wild West, he first joined Twitter and in time started working at a digital agency helping build online stores. He would wake up at 4:30 in the morning and write content and realized he was really good at it. Hear his story about the traffic starting to grow and within a few years, he reached 5 million visitors a year and had nearly 600,000 followers on Twitter! He has mastered content creation to attract an audience.Jeff was doing all the writing, doing all the work and so he needed a way to actually scale it and put in place systems and processes so he could create content at scale. That's what he and his team are doing now. He realized his passionate purpose is to actually try and help people get their voice out to the world. What he loves about social media is it allows you to bypass the gatekeepers, the media moguls. Then hear his top three things regarding social media.Learn to use digital advertising that's paid, don't expect it to be organic. Test different platforms. Don't assume that what you are running is going to work for you. He says sometimes they test up to 72 different formats of an ad. And, do not just test the ads also test the platformsDone is better than perfect.I asked Jeff if anyone is looking to start at the end of the content world, what are a couple pointers on creating content at scale would you give them? He gave advice coming from someone who's been doing it for a long time, at a very, very high level. It is good stuff starting with how he decided to get other people to write for him and how you have the ability to take content and turn it into a variety of media. Don't over complicate things. The Jeff Bullas show is an evolution of his blog and website, taking it to a whole new level. They interview some of the most fascinating entrepreneurs from all around the world, especially those that are focusing on the digital space. https://www.jeffbullas.com/jeff@jeffbullas.comhttps://www.facebook.com/jeffreybullas/https://www.linkedin.com/in/jeffbullas/https://www.instagram.com/jeffbullas/?hl=en

What can any entrepreneur learn from influencer entrepreneurs like Jeff Bullas, Kevin L. Jackson, and Josh Steimle? How to become the influencer of your new market? I was standing in Lipton’s testing room in Bristol with the Global Marketing Director, in 1996, learning one of the most important lessons in marketing. From my 32 years in marketing, I know that the best and easiest way to succeed in launching a new product and building a successful brand is by leading your market category. The idea is taking ownership of a market category in the minds of the customers. One of the four basic market strategy definitions is ‘what market category should we play in’. If you can’t lead the market, you should invent a new market category. The most famous example of that is probably the story about Miller Beer. Miller wanted to grow and lead the US market. However the beer market was totally saturated. And any farmer who grew barley could quite easily build a brewery in his farm and start selling beer. Miller looked for the differentiation point. Marketing was in its infancy; Miller had done research and found there is a need for a light, less bitter beer with a smaller amount of alcohol, so they invented a new kind of beer. They could have launched the new beer by calling it the new Miller Beer. But they didn’t. Instead, they called women, young drivers (and other potential audiences of such a product) to try the first light beer in the world. They didn’t promote Miller beer; they were the ‘new needed category’ They took ownership in the minds of the customers as the leader of a new kind of beer and increased dramatically the value of the Miller Brand overnight. With time, other beer producers penetrated the light beer market, however Miller Lite was, for a long time, the market leader of the light beer category. Today, Miller Lite is the third most popular beer in the US. The most interesting thing is that all three leading beers in the US today are lite beers. Entrepreneurs, who invent new products, also create new market categories. Taking ownership of this new category can be critical to the strength of your brand and the value you can achieve for your entrepreneurship. I will write in more depth about finding the right market category in one of the coming posts. Let’s go back to the testing room in Bristol. At that time, Lipton was marketed world wide as the leading tea brand in the world. By saying to me, “You should become the Queen of Tea,” this Unilever director meant that I should know everything about tea and be the voice of the worlds leading tea in Israel where I was Lipton’s marketing director. Become the voice of your new category Once you decide, based on research and market overview, what market category you can lead and take ownership of, it’s time to become the voice of this category. You should make sure to speak “in the name” of the new category and not to promote your product. People became more and more skeptical towards advertising and promotion. The equation here is simple; people want to be updated and learn about a new category and solution that is relevant for them. However, I always say that people love to buy but hate “to be sold to”. The idea of how an expert can become known in their field of expertise is brought to us by Mark Schaefer in his excellent book Known. “When I wrote my last book, Known, it was about how creating an effective, powerful personal brand is really the only sustainable, competitive advantage we can have. I was addressing the question: Could anybody become known?” Many of the successful entrepreneurs I interview on this show are recognized as influencers in their field. Before I’ll share you the practical steps you should take in order to become the influencer of you market category I’d like to share with you the stories of 4...

Faire long et quali ! . . . Why Millennials Are Choosing Podcasting Over Blogging To Build Their Personal Brands According to a recent Forbes online article, Has 'Millennial Travel' Gone Too Far?," Millennials are on the move far more than generations before them and their mobile devices are their lifelines. Millennials want to stay connected. Millennials want to make their mark. To do these, more and more millennials are developing a personal, as well as a professional brand, that they can expand into a growing community. Early on, millennials was encouraged to create blogs and websites with portfolios. Podcasts were rarely mentioned. But millennials have found that podcasts can be an important part of their branding toolkits – important enough that they appear to be abandoning blogs for them. This transition could be trace back as millennials realized that they themselves were not reading many blogs. According to a recent online article from Jeff Bullas, over 41% of millennials have no patience for text content that is too long. So if you want to say something, say it quick and say it well. If they were not reading blog posts that much, their own audiences were probably not either. Why do podcasts appeal to millennial podcasters and millennial listeners? Podcasts are great media for those with short attention spans. And today's attention economy. With their ever present earbuds in place, listeners can work out, drive to and from work and walk their dogs. In these environments, video doesn't work. And blog posts don't work. Podcasts allows content to be delivered in a genuine, natural tone, so the podcaster can establish who they are as a person. Podcasts are also a great medium to break down typically dense or “boring” topics like real estate, finance or insurance into digestible chunks. And there are some successful examples of podcasting by millennials who have chosen this medium over blogs to promote their personal brand. Cristen Conger and Caroline Ervin began a podcast, “Stuff Mom Never Told You,” in 2014. Katie Roach began her “Drunk Sex” podcast, hoping to open up conversations about sex. Podcasting allows these millennials to build a better rapport with their fans, with proven results in higher loyalty, higher engagement and more authority online. My biggest wish, and the reason I started this podcast, is to provide each and every one of you with the most relevant and important content and tools that will help you entrepreneurs, startup founders, and small business owners to gain the fastest, biggest, and most sustainable success through an ongoing, growing stream of leads and paying customers while building your brand. Having worked in executive international brands marketing roles for the first 20 years of my career and having worked with hundreds entrepreneurs and startups on their global strategy, marketing, and sales for the following ten years, I can tell you that during these crazy times of endless changes, there is one thing that hasn’t changed; the way people think, desire, and decide. Marketing is all about looking at things from the point of view of your potential customers, because the money you are looking for is in their pockets. Once you learn to look at your product or service from your customers’ eyes, brain, and heart – the customers and the market leadership will be yours. In this episode, we chose to walk you through the second round of the best advice for winning your customers, from these seven leaders and most successful entrepreneurs: Mike Stelzner, Jeff Bullas, Erik Huberman, Mike Allton, Ian Anderson Gray, Douglas Burdett, and Jeremiah Gardner. I never know in advance what will be the best advice from my guests. When we decided to launch a podcast that will be devoted to customer focus for entrepreneurs, I wasn’t sure what would come out of these interviews. There is a huge shift in marketing today, but the amazing thing is that these seven people gave exactly the same advice we got in the first “best advice ever” episode – I invite you to listen to this episode to hear the top advice in 2018. I first learned about Michael Stelzner in 2009, while looking for some professional information about social media, and was amazed to see all the great most professional content Michael’s blog Social Media Examiner was sharing. No one shared much knowledge for free back then. But it wasn’t only the fact it was free, Mike Stelzner and his college writers opened a wide gate to this wonderland of social media. I fell in love with this blog and a few years later, I flew 20 hours from Tel Aviv to San Diego to take part in the 3rd SMMW conference and haven’t missed that conference since. Lets listen to Mike’s best advice: Mike Stelzner Michael Stelzner is the founder of Social Media Examiner, author of the books, Launch and Writing White Papers, and the man behind Social Media Marketing World–the industry’s largest conference. He’s also the host of the Social Media Marketing podcast, founder of the Social Media Marketing Society, and host of the weekly Social Media Marketing Talk Show. Michael’s best advice about approaching the customers I think that when you get started, you really need to talk to a lot of people to really understand what their problems are. That could be through going to an event where a lot of people that meet your customers happen to be and talking with them to understand what the customers’ problems are. If you already have some people in an email list, you can send an email to them, asking them a lot of questions to understand what their challenges are. But somehow survey or ask what the challenges are, I think it’s the number one way that anybody can be successful. A lot of times we guess we think that everyone is like us, which is totally not true, and we say “if everyone is like me then they would be interested in that,” and then we just throw it out to the world and hope it sticks. The story of...
33rd Episode’s Show Notes Michael Stelzner founded Social Media Examiner in 2009, and his biggest success was the Social Media Marketing World Conference. Jeff Bullas’s blog receives over 5 million visitors a year. David Beebe Is an Emmy-winning Branded Content Producer, Keynote Speaker, and Content Decoded. Jeremiah Gardner has been featured in Forbes, The Huffington Post, Entrepreneur Magazine, Lifehacker, and The Guardian. Mike Allton is a Content Marketing Practitioner, an award-winning Blogger and an Author. John Nemo is a Bestselling Author who wrote 7 books, a former Associated Press Reporter, Award-Winning PR Director and Social Media Consultant. These are the most successful people I have chosen to share their key success factors with you. Hello, Reach or Miss listeners. It’s almost impossible to tell what exactly makes a successful entrepreneurial brand so successful. However, I discovered that when we dig deep, all of the leading entrepreneurs have the one key success factor that works for them. I’ve chosen 6 successful guests to share their 8 key factors of success, which can be implemented by any entrepreneur that is looking to break their own records and become a market leader and a successful entrepreneur. The one key success factor Michael Stelzner Michael Stelzner is the founder of Social Media Examiner, author of the books, Launch and Writing White Papers, and the man behind Social Media Marketing World–the industry’s largest conference. He’s also the host of the Social Media Marketing podcast, founder of the Social Media Marketing Society, and host of the weekly Social Media Marketing Talk Show. There was a very clear motto in Michael Stelzner’s interview. When I asked Michael about his best advice for entrepreneurs and new small business owners, he had a clear answer: I think that when you get started, you really need to talk to a lot of people to really understand what their problems are. That could be through going to an event where a lot of people that meet your customers happen to be, and talking with them to understand what the customers’ problems are. If you already have some people in an email list, you can send an email to them, asking them questions, to understand what their challenges are. I think it’s the number one way that anybody can be successful. A lot of times we think that everyone is like us, which is totally not true, and we say “if everyone is like me, then they would be interested in that,” and then we just throw it out to the world and hope it sticks. Michael Stelzner’s one key success factor I would have to say truly knowing who our audience is and giving them exactly what they want, for free, over and over again. Jeff Bullas Jeff is a digital entrepreneur, marketing blogger, keynote speaker, digital strategist, consultant, and bestselling author. He works with companies and executives to grow their online businesses through social, digital, and marketing automation. His blog receives over 5 million visitors a year and is found at jeffbullas.com (http://www.jeffbullas.com) . He has spent most of his business career involved with information technologies, telecommunications, and the web. For Jeff Bullas, starting his social media career was a result of four different influences that happen around the same time: He was looking for a new career path. Jeff told me he read David Meerman Scott’s book, The New Rules of Marketing and PR, in 2008. Meerman talked about the power of content to attract the audience instead of having to go out and chase them and it sounded like a good idea to me because most businesses use cold calls.. He came upon Tim Ferries, who he worked for and Tim Ferries liked the idea. The last piece of inspiration was reading a blog post of HubSpot saying that if you don’t have a clue of what to start a business on then start a blog… “For me,”...
Welcome to Episode 65 of the No Quit Living Podcast. NQL is a personal development podcast designed to help listeners achieve their goals and desires. Through hearing the inspiring stories and tips from the greats, we will all find it easier to stay motivated. Jeff Bullas is the first person we have interviewed from across the globe. He lives in Australia, and with the help of the amazing technology we have, the distance was no match for our desire to connect and have him on our show. Jeff and Chris speak about this briefly, and it goes hand in hand with the overall theme of today's episode. We as human beings have the ability to be creative and with the internet and social media, we have the ability to share our creations with ease. Jeff worked a day job as a teacher for years and he hated it. In addition to that, he went through a tough divorce and countless hurdles in starting his business before he ultimately found success. After a series of small wins, Jeff has been able to grow an audience online for his blog and create a great career for himself as a speaker - with opportunities to travel all around the world. Watch the video of this podcast here. Jeff Bullas started out his career as a teacher but his heart wasn’t in it, so he “fired” himself and started to create content about each new tech revolution – PC, web, and now his content is around social media and marketing your business. He was one of the early adopters of blogging in 2009 and practised inbound marketing. He was inspired by the book “The New Rules of Marketing and PR” by David Meerman Scott, as he liked the idea of attracting customers rather than going out to chase them. His blog, which started out as a passion project, has ended up being a huge success that it is today. We urge you to visit jeffbullas.com/bio and check out his long list of bragging rights. He is currently in Forbes’ Top 20 Influencers of CMOs. Blogging Within a Saturated Market With the blogosphere being such a saturated market these days, Troy asks whether Jeff’s success was also a matter of good timing and whether this kind of success is still possible today. Jeff explains that in business, timing is everything but it isn’t impossible to be a success. It requires persistence and needs passion. If you don’t have these things, then it is going to be hard to show up every day. “Look at me- I am one of the oldest social media bloggers on the planet!” Anything is possible! Staying Motivated When There Is No Activity on Your Posts Jeff talks about the social web and how it provides motivation by validating your creation. “That’s why it is important to share your creation with the planet and push it out on social media.” It is also an indicator of what is working and what isn’t. ‘Content marketing' is two words – you have to create good content and then you have to market it; you have to persist. Get your content out there on as many channels as possible such as email, social media and through influencers. Approaching Influencers Troy asks the great question that if Jeff is approached with an article, what would make it a no-brainer for him to share it? Jeff explains that: The content must be good. He simply shares what he likes It must add value to his audience It must be relevant If it takes up too much of his time and they don’t make it easy for him, then he won’t bother with it! Getting Inspired It’s sometimes difficult to stay inspired especially when you aren't seeing the results straight away. But don’t give up peeps! Jeff gives some great advice – It’s not a get rich quick scheme; you need to give it time and it has to be driven by true passion and purpose. Your mindset has to be very much that ‘it is a long game'. You have to have patience and persistence if you want to be a success. He recommends Cal Newport’s book “Deep Work” which talks about how to start your day. For Jeff, he gets up at 4.30am, meditates for 15 minutes, writes, publishes it on social media then goes to work. He also mentions a great quote from Stephen King, “If you want to write a lot, then you need to read a lot.” Creativity comes from reading books that are going to inspire you. Jeff's Content Marketing tips: Build a tribe on Twitter Discover tools to automate sharing your social media posts Create content that is evergreen and doesn’t date easily Post regularly. Jeff posts on Twitter every 15 mins using Agora Pulse which doubles the engagement Create an email list. Jeff continues with his email list because engagement on any platform decreases over time so “you have to keep growing just to stand still”. He uses InfusionSoft which has plugins and add-ons which are used by most of the top bloggers in the world. It isn’t very user-friendly though, so you may want to look into other options like: Marketo for bigger businesses ClickFunnels for small to medium businesses. MailChimp if you’re starting out so you don’t over complicate it How to Get the Information out to as Many People in Your Niche as Possible Ask yourself the question ‘Who is in front of your target audience?' For example, you might want to talk to the person who provides software to your niche and do a deal with them. Where Does Jeff’s Business Come From? He says that having multiple revenue streams is important. Ad revenue is outdated now so they use influencer marketing projects, sponsorship, speaking, helping people on content and courses, and a blogging course which they sell. At the end of the day though, he says that people just want to learn from people who are doing and not the people who are just talking about it. He is simply learning how to be an entrepreneur and sharing his journey along the way. What Is the Best Converting Lead Magnet That Jeff Has Ever Produced? Jeff tells us that ‘101+ Traffic Tips to Grow Your Website Traffic Without Paying Google or Facebook a Cent' started as a blog which became so popular that he made into a 55-page E-book. Genius! Jeff Bullas Show Notes Jeff is a digital entrepreneur, marketing blogger, keynote speaker, digital strategist, consultant and bestselling author. He works with companies and executives to grow their online personal and businesses through social, digital and marketing automation. His blog receives over 5 million visitors a year and is found at jeffbullas.com and has spent most of his business career involved with information technologies, telecommunications and the web. Listed on Forbes as one of the “ Top 20 Influencers of CMO’s (http://www.forbes.com/sites/kimberlywhitler/2017/01/08/the-top-influencers-of-cmos-in-2016/#3a4c498c76f4) ” – 20171 Ranked by Apollo Research in the “Top 20 Influencers of Digital Marketers in the USA” (https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/top-20-influencers-digital-marketers-usa-richard-laven?trk=hp-feed-article-title-like) – 2016 #1 Global “ Digital Marketing (http://www.onalytica.com/blog/posts/digital-marketing-2016-top-100-influencers-and-brands/) Influencer” – 2016 Most passionate about My mission is to educate and help people to win business and life in the digital world. It’s very much of being global helping people to understand the digital world; whether creating a business or building a personal brand, within the corporation or on their own, and learn the power of creating on this social global web. What is your next step? We are taking our business to the next level, which means bring out some new products, write an eBook to launch them, to speak in conferences around the world and meet people face to face. My company started as a passion project. It started with reading David Meerman Scott’s, “The New Rules of Marketing and PR” in 2008. He talked about the power of content to attract the audience instead of having to go and chase them with outbound or cold calls and other different tactics that have been around for decades. David Meerman Scott’s concept of sharing content sounded like a good idea because most businesses used cold calls. I came upon Tim Ferries, who I worked for and he liked the idea and the last piece of inspiration was reading a blog post of HubSpot saying that if you don’t have a clue of what to start a business on than start a blog… “What’s a blog…?” So I discovered that a blog was just a place to actually create and share ideas with the world and the topic was inspired by my observation about what was happening with social networks; everyone was obsess with Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Instagram, and the topic that I start to create content around was social media and the tech world. At that time, I was actually unemployed; a few weeks later, I got a job at a digital agency where we built ecommerce sites for companies, but I continued to write and create content and share it. Three and a half years ago, I started to focus on my blog, so the “Passion project” became a full time business and it’s been growing ever since; we have been having fun and it doesn’t feel like work. We’ve built a virtual team; we have editor, we have a marketing manager, we have copywriters, a tech guy, and a marketing automation person. Who your Customers are? I wrote my blog about what I loved and observed and that was social media, my audience were people that was fascinated by social media and how they can use it to build a business and a personal brand and how to get content to move? I recently was nominated as one of the top 20 influencers for CMOs in the USA, so a lot of CMOs read my blog as well. Today we have guest writers that write for us; I write once a week, which is normally an opinion piece. I love writing, I discovered that I love writing, and I became better writer. Jeff’s best advice about approaching your customer Businesses start for many reasons. Some people has a grand plan when they start; I was on board with a startup, we had one idea which we felt that was great, we raised money, and...
