At the core of any business or individual is a set of values that governs their decision making and actions. Sometimes these values are well defined with intentionality. All too often these values are a “wish list” at best of how someone or a company would like to operate, and at worst an afterthought in which it is completely subjective and typically left to the emotional state at the time a decision is being made. This week Andy Traub, Wes Young, and Justin Lakin continue our conversation on building an ideal team by focusing on the topic of core values: what are they, are they important, and how can they impact my team and business? In today's episode we will cover: Many companies claim they have core values, but typically what they're referring to are generic beliefs: having integrity, making a profit, responding to customers and so on. I usually alternate between interviews and solo episodes, but I decided to mix things up a bit this time around. Why? Because this conversation with Lex Latkovski is one I've wanted to get out into the world for a while now. And I felt that there was no better time than now to do so. Lex's mission is to have you to laugh and see the world and your life as an endless source of adventure and opportunity. I hope you enjoy it and it helps you - even in some small way - get more out of this amazing adventure called life! Talking Points Lex shares a bit about himself, our common acquaintances, and what drives him (2:54) Lex talks about what it took (and what kept him going) during his time as a zen monk (4:34) What happened when Lex was at that retreat that made him realize he wanted to do this full time? (12:28) Lex talks about the experience of writing his book (15:38) Who are some of the authors that Lex has read that inspire him? (18:03) What is one thing someone can do to start this whole process? And what is one thing Lex did that he found surprisingly beneficial? Do you ever stop to wonder what’s fun for you? Are you surprised when the thing that was fun last week is nerve-wracking today? That happened to me in March of this year - sitting down for three different interviews. Turns out, the answer was right under my nose, provided by Andy Traub, the interview that made me so uncomfortable.
Andy Traub’s most profound reboot involved ending an engagement - 30 days before the wedding. In this episode Andy shares why he vlogs nearly every day and why he’s teaching his son to create content. Here’s a hint - it’s not about the numbers. Plus, Andy explains why half of his morning affirmations are intentional lies. Read more at http://rebootspodcast.com/episode24
Today I am meeting with Andy Traub because I have an outstanding idea for a course. I have been bouncing this idea around in my head for over a year now and I think it is time to put it out there. The problem I am having is that there are so many different directions I could go with this and I am having a hard time picking one direction.
Andy Traub combines his knack for new technologies, business experience and love of teaching to help entrepreneurs and creators gain clarity then develop and implement strategies to impact the world. After creating a site and brand to help people optimize software like ecamm, evernote, zoom.us and gmail, Andy is pivoting to help partners bring their creative projects to life.
What it means to take permission, the ugly truth about online marketing, and how to genuinely connect with influencers with Andy Traub. ----- Welcome to episode 87 of the Food Blogger Pro podcast! This week, Bjork chats with Andy Traub, a business coach who specializes in helping you take permission in your career. The phrase “take permission” might settle a bit weird in your brain. Don’t you ask for permission? That’s exactly what Andy’s all about. He feels that for your business to really thrive, you have to be comfortable with simply taking permission. Take permission to start. Take permission to invest. Take permission to learn. This mindset is crucial to not only finding success as an entrepreneur, but also finding out what your best, most useful skills and roles are in your business. With this mindset, you can really see your business grow. On today’s episode of Second Half Comeback, I interview author, blogger and speaker, Andy Traub from takepermission.com and author of The Early to Rise Experience (learn to rise early in 30 days). I’ve been a fan of Andy’s work ever since I watched an interview with him from Deacon Bradley’s Life Stoked. I totally relate to Andy’s blunt style and to how he seems to focus on taking care of his family first. I’m a huge fan of The Early to Rise Experience and have successfully implemented a number of his strategies to help take charge of my life by getting up early. Here are some of the key points and lessons from the Interview: Andy talks about how the book was inspired by one of his favorite books called “The Traveler’s Gift” by Andy Andrews and by his participation in Jeff Goins’ Tribe Writers course. Andy and I discuss how he actually hates getting up early but loves “being up early”. Andy emphasizes the key point that “victory begins at night”. He’s not telling us to get less sleep. He’s saying that the time you spend at night is not productive time versus the morning when we are fresh and full of energy. He points out that no one ever gets up early to waste time watching reality t.v. but that is often what we do at night when we are tired. “Your ideas are up at 5 a.m. but until now you’ve been asleep so you’ve missed them!” How getting up early allows us to “start our day with a victory”. “Life is not complicated. It’s what you do with your time.” Andy talks about how when his life sucks, it’s because he sucks. In other words, when he’s not being disciplined and getting up early to work on the important things in his life, his life sucks but when he starts his day early by doing his most important work... his life is better. “We think that life is this big thing. No it’s not...It’s what we do tomorrow morning!” I mention how one of my favorite tips is that when the alarm goes off, “get in the habit of putting your feet on the floor and pushing (otherwise known as standing)”...in other words, focus on the habit of just standing up as soon as the alarm goes off. It’s much harder to go back to bed once you’ve overcome the hurdle of just getting out of the warm bed. Andy talks about the idea of planning incentives for getting up early: Coffee ready to go when you get up, lay out favorite book to read, lay out clothes to go for a beautiful walk, etc. He mentions the tip that he invested in super comfortable $70 slippers! Early morning is magic time, use it to accomplish something important. "Stress isn’t up at 5 am. Stress doesn’t get up till like 8am so get up before stress.” Build in some accountability or a way to “put some skin in the game”. Make it a challenge, make it public, put something on the line like have a bet with a friend. “Smirk, because you just sucker punched the day”. “I’ve never met a man that I respected who was the last person up in his house.” Andy finishes up by praising YOU with this final quote… “I appreciate you for being intentional about your life….If you want to win at life you need to be intentional. Anybody who listened to the last 30 minutes is intentional about their lives...Well done! You care about your life...Bravo! This has been an investment in your life so keep listening to the show.” Links and Mentions You can find Andy at http://www.takepermission.com/ Get his book The Early to Rise Experience: learn to rise early in 30 days at http://www.amazon.com/The-Early-To-Rise-Experience-ebook/dp/B00B67PHOU Deacon Bradley's Life Stoked http://lifestoked.com Andy Andrews: The Traveler's Gift: Seven Decisions that Determine Personal Success http://www.amazon.com/Travelers-Gift-Decisions-Determine-Personal-ebook/dp/B00ETK822K/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1418327123&sr=1-1&keywords=the+travelers+gift Jeff Goins, Tribe Writers: http://goinswriter.com/tribewriters/

I'm pleased to have Michael Stelzner as my guest on today's show. If you don't know who Michael is… well in the words of Ron Burgundy, he's “kind of a big deal.” Don't act like you're not impressed. We'll get to Michael's interview in a few minutes, but first I want to tell you about the upcoming celebration, and a few other reasons to keep listening, such as… The most compressive goal-setting and tracking software I have found. The number 166. One of my NEW top Copywriting book recommedations. Now let's get on with it… Announcements: Thanks to all who have left a review of the podcast in iTunes. Next week's show is number 100, and we will be devoting it exclusively to listener questions. I'm turning the microphone over to you. Conferences where I will be attending and/or speaking: NAMS 11 February 7-9, 2014, Atlanta, GA Social Media Marketing World, March 26-28, 2014, San Diego, CA The Launch Conference, April 7-10, 2014, Orlando, FL JV Alert: The Perfect Game April 24-27, Denver, CO SCORRE Conference May 5-8, Orlando, FL Tip Of The Week I have been experimenting with a number of different goal-setting apps, and so far the most full-featured of the bunch is GoalsOnTrack. Things I like about GoalsOnTrack: It has a great little iPhone app. It syncs my due dates with Google Calendar. It's hierarchical, so it works like an outline. I can track my goal, the purpose that drives the goal, the start and end dates… and most importantly, the habits and action plans needed to support the goal. I do wish they offered a native iPad app, but other than those two points I love GoalsOnTrack. Copywriting Corner Accidental Genius: Using Writing to Generate Your Best Ideas, Insight, and Content One of the problems I see in the world of copywriting and marketing today is a lack of original ideas. Look, folks, John Caples and David Ogilvy did not achieve their greatness by using somebody else's “swipe file”. They got their breakthrough ideas by dipping into a deeper well, where they probably found ideas swimming around that grew out of reading books (you remember those, stories like Moby Dick, Huckleberry Finn, The Stand, Fahrenheit 451, Etc.?) I suggest you dip into those wells for yourself. The best copy, in my humble but accurate opinion, is between the covers of the best novels. But, I digress. Would you like a shortcut to writing better copy? This great book was recommended to me by my friend Andy Traub. In the book, Levy teaches a concept and technique he calls freewriting. His claim is that it helps you produce breakthrough ideas and solve problems in minutes. This book has literally changed my writing process. I'm using the freewriting technique to generate material for my blog posts, podcasts, books, seminars, and products. What I was shocked to discover is that even if we consider ourselves creative, we tend to hold ourselves back. Inside each of us lives The Editor. Her job (yes, I'm afraid it's always a her) is to tell us that our writing is not perfect, that we need to go back and revise it, that we need to make sure we never sound stupid. Heaven forbid if anybody thought we were crazy. What results from that kind of limiting belief is limited thinking. Careful thinking. Thinking that wants to make sure we fit in. Thinking that keeps us stuck. Free writing, on the other hand, starts with you writing as fast as you can, for as long as you can, about something that's important to you and ignoring the standard rules of grammar and spelling and what you learned in English class and what your mother might think and what the Ladies' Society For Literary Decency might think. I freewrote that last sentence. Notice that it was longer than most of my more controlled writing. It also, I think, had a little sparkle. I'm not going to polish it fix it, I'm going to leave it here as an example that perhaps will tease you into buying this book. I've only scratched the surface of Levy's work. He has six big “secrets” that help render your Editor unconscious and let your genius run around for a while, naked and free. There are also a score of other exercises and techniques. And yes, he does teach you how to refine your free writing into something that you would share with somebody without fear or embarrassment. Spiritual Foundations 2 hours. That's the amount of time each week the average businessperson, manager, or entrepreneur spends inside of church. If you've done the math already you realize that there are only 168 hours in a week. That means that 166 hours are spent outside the church for most modern Christians. There's nothing wrong with that. In fact, that's my point in this week's Spiritual Foundations. Jesus never told us, “go to church.” In fact, he said something quite opposite: And he said to them, “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation.” Mark 16:15 Most modern Christians act as if “ministry” is a job title that preachers have. But according to the Bible, the job of the preacher is to equip the saints for the work of the ministry. The saints (that's you and me) are the ones doing the ministry. As a minister in the marketplace, you are quite literally going “into all the world.” In future episodes, we're going to focus a lot more intently on what it means to do marketplace ministry without being preachy or repulsive to other people. We're going to focus on how you show the love of Christ to others in such a way they are changed by it… they are changed by him. For now, I leave you with something to think about. Just like Jesus, your meant to be out there, doing your father's business. So how's business? In the middle of the night during a hurricane, Andy received a phone call from General Foglesong in Afghanistan. He wanted Andy to find proof that every life matters and could make a difference to the world. The Air Force's suicide rate was higher than the general population's suicide rate. Andy's interest in the Butterfly Effect, also known as the sensitive dependance upon initial conditions, led him to reverse engineer the life of Norman Borlaug, who is credited with saving the lives of over 2 billion people. Andy found that Norman's life was steered in its direction due to others' actions in the preceding years. After hearing Andy tell the Butterfly Effect story live, Zig Ziglar told him that he should make part of his speech into a book. When the book was initially turned down by Thomas Nelson, the online publishing company Simple Truths picked it up. Over the course of the next 18 months, the book was picked up by two more publishers and became a success. Never look at the "No's" as a final answer. There is always a "yes." A few months ago I was having dinner with a handful of friends who all happen to be in business. Andy Traub fielded the question, “What three business books have been the most influential to you?” Two of the three books came to my mind immediately. Mr. Covey's “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” made this short list. When I was a twenty-something salesperson, I found myself at a seminar where I first heard the important lessons of being proactive and putting first things first. It seems that ever once in a while a writer finds a new way to articulate a set of timeless principles. First published in 1990, Covey's 7 Habits has been named one of the most influential business management books ever and the audio version is the best selling nonfiction audio book in history. The focus of this book is Powerful Lessons in Personal Change. When I first read this book, I recall being criticized by an older gentleman of being too self-centered and should be more others focused. He did not understand that by learning these principles, I became more effective in all of my relationships. Here is a summary of the principle's taught in this book. Independence or Self-Mastery The First Three Habits surround moving from dependence to independence: • Habit 1: Be Proactive • Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind • Habit 3: Put First Things First Interdependence The next three have to do with Interdependence (i.e., working with others): • Habit 4: Think Win-Win • Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood • Habit 6: Synergize Self-Renewal The Last habit relates to self-rejuvenation: • Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw Mr. Covey passed away recently at the age of 79 surrounded by his wife of nearly 50 years along with his kids and their spouses. This is another word for organized procrastination. Unlike my occasional procrastination which is unorganized and sometimes called the squeaky wheel syndrome. This is where my attention jumps from one topic to the next due to the ringing phone or a multitude of other distractions. Analysis Paralysis occurs when someone gets so bogged down in the details of their project that it never gets completed. Many times they are waiting until it's perfect or trying to juggle multiple projects. Stephen Covey speaks in depth about putting first things first in his best selling book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. He describes Time Management in a matrix of four types of activities. Quadrant I – Important and Urgent Quadrant II – Important and Not Urgent Quadrant III – Not Important and Urgent Quadrant IV – Not Important and Not Urgent Covey teaches that we are most productive when we spend most of our time in Quadrant II, tasks that are important but not urgent. Recently I spent some time with my friend Andy Traub and he gave me two gifts. The new book, Poke the Box about personal initiative and ShipIt, a short pamphlet designed to help remove Analysis Paralysis; both of these by author Seth Godin. I watched Andy use ShipIt to help him quickly develop a Video Product in a short amount of time. ShipIt is a short business plan to help guide you through a specific task or project. Sometimes we need a roadmap to help us move through a project to completion. In addition, you could consider an accountability partner to keep you on task. Make a decision to finish something that you have had on your list way too long and quit waiting for perfection…it doesn't exist. Have a great week! Pierce
