Every weekday during HALLOWEEN HUMPFEST represents a different horror them and we're happy to kick off the first of four JOHN CARPENTUESDAY selections. Every Tuesday we discuss a John Carpenter film that we've been long overdue to watch and today is his follow up to his and Debra Hill's smash hit “Halloween” that sees the return of Jamie Lee Curtis and Nancy Loomis. We're discussing the salty 1980 horror “THE FOG” also starring Adrienne Barbeau, Tom Atkins, Janet Leigh & Hal Holbrook. A legacy of horror envelopes the town of Antonio Bay as strange things begin to happen on its 100th anniversary. A lot going on but Carpenter manages to execute this eerily serene horror in interesting ways. Seriously, we about fell asleep looking at these coastal landscapes and guilty whisperings of the village priest. Not a complaint. Why is this era of Carpenter so soothing? It's almost Founder's Day at Antonio Bay, so the IMMP celebrates by rolling into John Carpenter's 1980 movie THE FOG.
We told you last October in our episode about the movies John Carpenter wrote, directed, and scored that THE FOG (1980) was a delight and unexpectedly good. Because the movie takes place on April 21st, and is about the centennial founding of Antonio Bay, we decided every April 21st should be celebrated as a global holiday: FOG DAY! So get your pirate garb and fog machines ready, because we're celebrating the 144th anniversary in our first ever FOG DAY celebration! Dustin shares thoughts on a lot of first-time watches: The Stranger, Hypnotic, On the Line, Irish Wish, and Quiet on the Set - the documentary about the Nickelodeon controversy. Jake gives a first impression for Ricky Stanicky. Then the boys share some extended thoughts about a really interesting film they were asked to check out called The Last Deal. Currently available on Starz, it's the biggest Guerrilla-style production in decades and a really interesting film. Check it out! On the eve of the centennial of small coastal town Antonio Bay in Northern California, old Mr. Machen tells ghost stories to children by a campfire on the beach. One story is about a clipper ship that crashed against the rocks nearby, causing all of its crew to drown after mistaking a campfire for a lighthouse while sailing through an unearthly fog. Machen finishes the story as midnight strikes, and paranormal activity begins occurring around the town. Town priest, Father Malone, discovers his grandfather's diary. The journal reveals that a century earlier, in 1880, the six founders of Antonio Bay (including Malone's grandfather) deliberately wrecked a clipper ship named the Elizabeth Dane, so that its wealthy, leprosy-afflicted owner Blake would not establish a leper colony nearby. The conspirators used the gold plundered from the ship to establish the town. Meanwhile, out at sea, a strange, glowing fog envelops a fishermen's trawler. The fog brings with it the Elizabeth Dane, carrying the vengeful ghosts of Blake and his crew, who kill the fishermen. The following morning, local radio DJ Stevie Wayne is given a piece of driftwood by her son Andy, who found it on the beach. It is inscribed with the word "DANE". Stevie takes it with her to the lighthouse where she broadcasts her radio show. As she is listening to music on a cassette, the driftwood begins seeping water. As the water touches her cassette player, a man's voice is inexplicably heard on the tape, swearing revenge, and the words "6 must die" appear on the wood before it bursts into flames. Stevie extinguishes the fire and sees that the wood once again reads "DANE", and the tape is once again playing normally. Town residents Nick and Elizabeth find the lost fishing trawler adrift and the corpse of one of the fishermen. Later, while Elizabeth is in the autopsy room alone, the fisherman's corpse briefly comes to life and accosts her before collapsing. Nick and coroner Dr. Phibes see the now-lifeless corpse has carved the number 3 on the floor with a scalpel. That evening, as the town begins its celebrations, local weatherman Dan is killed by the ghosts at the weather station. The fog has returned and starts moving inland, disrupting the town's telephone and power lines. Using a backup generator, Stevie begs her listeners to go to her house and save her son. The ghosts kill her son's babysitter but Nick and Elizabeth rescue Andy. Stevie advises her listeners to head to the town's church, but then finds herself trapped and under siege by the ghosts when the fog envelops her lighthouse. Seeking refuge inside the church, a group of townsfolk finds a large gold cross in the wall cavity, made from the rest of the stolen gold from the Elizabeth Dane, just as the fog begins enveloping the church and the ghosts begin their attack. Malone, knowing that the ghosts have returned to take six lives in lieu of the six original conspirators, offers the gold and himself to spare the others. The ghost of Blake himself seizes the gold cross and he and his crew disappear in a blinding flash of light as the fog miraculously vanishes. Stevie, now alone again at the lighthouse, warns her listeners that the fog could come again and instructs any ships that can hear her to keep an eye out for it. After everyone leaves the church, Malone remains inside and wonders why he was spared given that there were only five deaths. The fog then reappears along with the ghosts, and Blake decapitates Malone, making six.

New episodes broadcast live on Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/sotdcast Having just woken up and seeking stimulation, the guys focus on creating all the steaming, cloudy FOG FOG John Carpenter's THE FOG puns possible to make sure none get mist. Bound to being on topic, Tom's been on the Yu-Gi-Oh, and Chris is reminiscing about Pokemon Tourneys past. Striving to get us back, Matt's rewatched Twin Peaks 3 and revisited Silent Hill Homecoming, which leads on to an interesting discussion of the series post-Team Silent. Chris then launches himself into the breach with tales of For Honor and being taught a valuable lesson about the options menu. Other topics broadly lanced over include Alone In The Dark, Chinese click farms and Boris Johnson, obviously. This week's focus though was the slow-burning piratey-ghost tale of The Fog. Following some seriously dark shit, from a man of the cloth no less, Antonio Bay is now the home of a curse with an oddly specific kill count. The master John Carpenter from beginning to end employs great technique to build tension, and for the most part succeeds - except for maybe the bloated middle. Still the guys can't help but lapse into reverential talk of Carpenter's Escape series (twice) on their way to the movie's rather unfair conclusion. I guess you might want to check out your family tree for heinous acts your ancestors might have committed - y'know, just in case. Following the massive success of his breakout film “Halloween” in 1978, director John Carpenter inked a two-film deal with AVCO Embassy Pictures for his next two follow ups. Because he was known for the horror genre after creating one of the most iconic slashers in history with Michael Myers, Carpenter was expected to follow that up with another terrifying film. The inspiration for his next film came during a trip to England with his producing partner and then girlfriend Debra Hill when they visited Stonehenge. At the time they visited, Carpenter remarked at the creepy fog bank that had rolled across Stonehenge and he wondered what could be hiding inside it. That was enough to spark an idea for a story that Carpenter and Hill wrote together about a group of settlers who conspired to crash a clipper ship named the Elizabeth Dane, captained by a man named Blake who was attempting to find a home for his leper colony in the area. The sabotage killed Blake and all of his people and his gold was used to found the town of Antonio Bay but 100 years later, the doomed captain returns for revenge. In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we're going to crank up the sultry sounds of Stevie Wayne and batten down the hatches on the Seagrass as we review the 1980 film “The Fog”…

Continuing our Halloween season spent with John Carpenter's filmography, we turn to the moody mistiness of 1980's The Fog, one of Carpenter's better films and yet still falling somewhere in the middle of his best output. We're disappointed with the lack of Tom Atkins mustache; we query whether Jamie Lee Curtis or Adrienne Barbeau tops the hotness meter; we dish out some fire at the founders of Antonio Bay who couldn't stand to live even a mile away from a leper colony. And we have a lot of fun talking about the film over the course of an hour, and we hope you enjoy our coverage. This week, we're headed back to good old Antonio Bay... But, this time around, it's not quite the same place that John Carpenter introduced us to in his classic 1980 chiller. No, against our better judgment (seriously, this thing has a 4% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes!), we've decided to take a look at director Rupert Wainwright's 2005 remake of The Fog to see if there's anything in it that's worth seeing for die-hard Carpenter fans like ourselves. You'll have to listen to find out, but, as with the movie itself, you're not likely to be shocked. Still, Chris and Nick put their usual level of over-thought into this largely forgotten PG-13 affair, and if nothing else, it's a chance to discuss remakes and reboots of beloved genre films -- some of which really did do some interesting things to justify their existence. We also ponder the question of what the most truly original John Carpenter film might be, celebrate the return of moviegoing in the post-COVID world, and discuss the recent Guardian piece about why Ghosts of Mars might not be so bad, after all.

Dean, Matthew, and Scott are more in a fog than they actually talk about the titular, fog, but at least you'll be saddled with the visual nightmare of Porky Pig being led to the kill floor while children watch. As for the movie: could be a boomer's worst nightmare? Lots of gadgets malfunction and at first the fog seems like more of a nuisance than a mortal threat to Antonio Bay. Cundy, as usual, delivers some visual supremacy with his atmospheric depiction of a sleepy, and utterly cursed village which is routinely saturated in fog. The problem seems to exist with the characters, their goals, and how much they actually matter. Still likeable, but it is no surprise as to why it was more forgettable than other Carpenter flicks.

On the 56th episode of The Film ‘89 Podcast, Steve, Haydn & Skye take a ghoulish trip to the haunted coastal town of Antonio Bay as they celebrate the 40th anniversary of John Carpenter's tale of ghostly revenge, The Fog. Carpenter is a firm favourite director amongst the Film ‘89 team and following on from one of our earliest episodes where Carpenter's seminal sci-fi/horror classic, The Thing was given the Film ‘89 treatment, this time we look at his 1980 cult classic, The Fog, a ghost story that underwent considerable post-production re-shooting after Carpenter felt that it lacked the requisite scares compared to its contemporaries. Carpenter and his producing/writing partner Debra Hill had a lot of expectation upon them to follow-up their 1978 smash-hit, Halloween, a film that was one of the most profitable films of all time and had firmly cemented Carpenter as a director to watch. The Fog is the perfect film for Halloween season, a classic campfire tale of revenge that features a cast that includes both Hollywood royalty and many recurring faces from Carpenter's filmography.
Ahoy Mateys, this week's episode rolls into the fictional town of Antonio Bay to cover John Carpenter's "The Fog." Charlie and Eric talk about pirate ghosts, lighthouses, our local connection to the 1980 film, the art of jump scares and more. Listen now!
Natalie and Arnold visit scenic Antonio Bay to help celebrate its 100th anniversary! There's just one problem – the town was built on a horrible lie, and a vengeful gang of seafaring zombie ghosts are returning for revenge, hidden in THE FOG (1980)! It's time to talk about another one of our favorite "comfort food" movies and one of John Carpenter's finest film ensembles, as well as this modern classic's unfortunate remake, THE FOG (2005), and a somewhat similarly-themed B-movie Voodoo romp, ZOMBIES OF MORA TAU (1957). There's seaweed and salt water everywhere, and a chill in the air, so bundle up in your favorite plaid shirt, stay out of the fog, and keep your candles lit! And remember, when you're listening to this podcast, the only ghoul in the house...is YOU! Show Music: "Cemetery Dance" by The Vivisectors.
Having just woken up and seeking stimulation, the guys focus on creating all the steaming, cloudy FOG FOG John Carpenter's THE FOG puns possible to make sure none get mist.
