The DFM-4 kick off their annual Hungry for the Holidays by diving into the chaotic brilliance of this over-the-top 1996 action-horror comedy that has some serious bite! This week's film serves up a killer cocktail of action, suspense, and dark humor, showcasing the outrageous collaboration of Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino, not to mention George Clooney's undeniable coolness in his breakout role. Carrie and Case highlight Tom Savini and Michael Park's memorable moments and the jaw-dropping effects from the KNB EFX Group, which elevate the film's gruesome artistry to a whole new level. Joining the discussion, Jake the Midnight Traveler shares his personal tales, while Sinister Sister AJ celebrates the film's unstoppable energy.
Attention all vampire subgenre & Hammer horror fans! This ep is for you! Lee's first bite of the Drac role takes the usual Stoker vamp characteristics & turns them up a notch. This not-so-faithful novel adaptation boasts intricate set designs, attention to costume detail, & rich coloring, making it a can't miss. We talk Lee & Cushing's shared filmography and the often unappreciated performance of Melissa Stribling as Mina. The Midnight Traveler discusses his discovery of this film, & Sinister Sister offers her differing takeaways to close out the episode.
[Spoiler chat starts at 14:25] Put down those back alley creeps & tune in ‘cuz we've got the entire DFM quartet on for this special bonus episode. We'll discuss the neon-lit Hollywood underbelly-deets that is the final chapter of the Ti-West/Mia Goth X-trilogy. We all find 1985 to be well represented and agree on the greatness of some of the deaths, but do we agree on Ms. Minx's character arc, the strength of the supporting characters and the way the trilogy ended? Plenty of Jake the Midnight Traveler and Annjanette aka Sinister Sister thoughts this go-round.
Hey again DFM fam! It's bonus episode time! We zoom'd with Jake the Midnight Traveler and his friend, Joseph Fotinos. Texas-based listeners remember Joseph as none other than Professor Anton Griffin from his Midnight Shadow Show.Joseph talks all things horror dating back to his childhood. He shares his love for Universal monsters, Amicus produced films, and his days working with Fangoria. Did we mention he's a University of Texas film professor!? Joseph schools us on why so many turn to horror, chats visually appealing horror films, and explains why Carrie and Case should have watched The Phantom of the Paradise yesterday. There's also some F13 franchise convo and a whole lot more.
Kick back with a pint of plain and join us for DFM's St. Paddy's Day Weekend Special II! We thoroughly enjoy just about everything Warwick Davis does, including this 90s horror comedy essential brought to you by the fine folks at Trimark Pictures. Jake the Midnight Traveler educates us on the pre self-aware moment of 90s horror, and we celebrate this week with a St. Paddy's horror mad-lib and silly sequel ideas.

Happy Turkey Week everyone! This one is going out unedited as we had some equipment poop-out on us (plus travels made us tired as hell). We bring you this episode, recorded in the heart of Dawn of the Dead's hillbilly country (for real - we can smell the turkey-shot from here). Whether you're taking advantage of some great Black Friday deals or not, we hope you enjoy this week's adventure into the work of Romero and Savini as depicted at the Monroeville Mall. Listen in for a soft launch wrt small changes to our horror pod moving forward. We're slightly changing up segments/format as the listeners and production team have spoken. Despite our technology lapses this week, we're still happy to announce our Season 2 episode guide. For Jake the Midnight Traveler's personal Pittsburgh tales as they relate to Dawn of the Dead, please check out his segment this week on our socials via an extended audiogram. Our Season 2 guide will be posted and pinned there for a while too. (X and insta - @dfmmailwolf.) Love yinz! Gobble gobble!
This week in Segment 1, Comfy Horror Movie Review: Jake the Midnight Traveler has graced us with an extended segment, recalling the first time he took in the mayhem and murder that is the Tarantino/Rodriguez double feature called "The Grindhouse". After the return of the old drive-in intermission ads and trailers, Segment 2, Horror, Etc features Carrie and Case diving into the Grindhouse Part 2 that never was, Tarantino movies that were never made, and what movie, trailer and ad selections we would make if we were charged with putting together a grindhouse double feature.
Welcome to Episode 37 / Week 4 of our first ever Halloween 25/8/366 month! Jake the Midnight Traveler is back once again to join us for an extended chat about his favorite zombie film: The Return of the Living Dead!In Segment 1, Comfy Horror Movie Review Jake the leads the way discussing this favorite ROTLD quotes/dialogue, the party element of this flick, death & effects and what makes these ghouls unique compared to their cousins found in Romero's Night/Dawn/Day trilogy. We also create alternate taglines and chat movies that pair well for a double feature with ROTLD. Uneeda Medical Supply was kind enough to provide us an educational yet suspicious training session for this week's intermission called "Don't Go There." You may just think twice before joining their ranks! In Segment 2, Horror, Etc. Jake share's his discovery of this movie, his mission to spread its gospel, and we dive even further into the party element that is fueled by a helluva' soundtrack. Then to end our special month, Jake wonders what Trick or Treating was like for Carrie and Case, we discuss our favorite costumes and candies when we were young, and what treats we could do without. HAPPY HALLOWEEN!
Welcome once again to Week 3 of our Halloween 25/8/366 Month! We're discussing Part 2 of John Carpenter's loosely-tied Apocalypse Trilogy. This 1987 flick is a religious themed, green-goo, anti-god, body-horror lover's delight: Yup - The Prince of Darkness! In Segment 1, Comfy Horror Movie Review we discuss this movie that has everything you could want from a John Carpenter movie: the usual suspects from his company of actors with some new faces for the time - including perhaps one of the most popular small-character roles played by Alice Cooper as highlighted in Jake the Midnight Traveler's segment - it has the signature slow-burn, plenty of creepy foreboding and a score not often discussed with fun kills that focus on said green-goo being spurt into peoples' mouths, turning them into blood-thirsty servants of the devil himself. We ask: why did it take so long to catch on? Why wasn't it more popular to begin with!? We all enjoy this but some slightly more than others :) In Segment 2, Horror, Etc Carrie and Case discuss some neat trivia both about the movie and the cast.
Welcome back to Week 2 of our first-ever Halloween 25/8/366 Month! We've got a killer of an episode where Jake the Midnight Traveler joins us for a whopping 2.5hrs+ to discuss arguably the most beloved movies of the entire Friday the 13th franchise. You probably won't find too many extended discussions of 3 horror movies that comprise a loose-trilogy but our trio is digging the deep dive on Jason in Parts 2, 3D and Final Chapter so grab some campfire snacks and get comfy with us!We begin the episode talking about Alice and one of the best slasher intros ever, then after discussing the intro in more detail as presented in the novel, DFM hits the fast forward button to the meat of our discussion: 5 years later and the start of the 1984 Crystal Lake Massacre. We let the killing spree that unfolds in a week or less over the course of 3 movies be our movie timeline guide. For the start of the 84' Massacre / F13 Part 2 we answer questions like: "Do you think Jason really drowned and is brought back by the Crystal Lake Curse or did he not actually drown and mommy is just bonkers!?" or "Did Paul and Ted know a little more and didn't share all of their knowledge about a prowler in the area?" After Intermission #1 we chat Jason coming for your popcorn in F13 3D. We ask things like "Was Chris raped during the flashback scene?" and "Who are the Cheech and Chong-inspired movie characters in relation to the other characters?" After intermission #2 we talk the return of Tom Savini's work and the cast that includes Corey Feldman, Crispin Glover and one character that brings some rare continuity to the franchise in F13 The Final Chapter. Where do you land on questions like "Is Jason alive, dead, or something in between after escaping the morgue?" and "Do you laugh at Gordon the dog blasting through the window or the Rob 'He's Killing Me' moments?" We wrap up the conversation with Final Topics like "From these 3 films, pick your favorite prankster, survivor, and 3 characters to bring with you to a weekend in the woods, pick your living quarters & weekend activities too" and "After you hear on the news that there's is a killer on the loose nearby, do you hunker down and get ready for Jason Night of the Living Dead style or do you get the hell outta' Crystal Lake?" This episode is for our fellow Friday the 13th fans and its out just in time for this Friday the 13th (10/13/2023)! Tune in, turn on Love is a Lie by Lion, and discuss these topics with your pals. You're doomed if you don't!
Welcome to Week 1 of our very first Halloween 25/8/366 Month! We've got the original Sean Cunningham and Victor Miller dawn of the 80s slasher to kick things off! In Segment 1, Comfy Horror Movie Review, Case provides the latest F13 franchise news regarding the legal battle that was and the up and coming prequel series set for 2024. The Mail Wolf is pretty riled up and Jake the Midnight Traveler arrives with two personal tales to tell this time in an extended segment. We rate this one pretty high on this month's skull-splitting axe rating system. Do you think this is a rip-off of Halloween? We're not so sure about that! There's some depth in the characters in the original we think is not found in Carpenter's classic (believe us, we're not knocking that one AT ALL). In Segment 2, Horror, Etc Carrie recasts the original F13 as if it was just coming out in 1997 - going toe to toe with the Scream franchise (the Scream meta-math is now all screwed up in this scenario).
In Segment 1, Comfy Horror Movie Review, the Mail Wolf brings us a message from Jake the Midnight Traveler regarding his first pass of this 2019 gem during the pandemic that is one part rock and roll, one part satanic panic and one part religious fanaticism. We enjoyed this 80s throwback that has the right notes of nostalgia, some fun rock and pop mixed in and even though the twists were obvious, the cast and acting were solid enough to make this entertaining, if not that rewatchable. In Segment 2, Horror, Etc we talk 1978 ritualistic killings that are The Kadunce Murders and read some Halloween poems. NOTICE: MOST HAIRSPRAYS ARE FLAMMABLE!!! Just sayin' ;)
In Segment 1, Comfy Horror Movie Review: The Mail Wolf has a congratulatory message for Jake the Midnight Traveler as he and his lady friend got hitched. We chat the 2017 UK indie horror gem, Double Date and then Carrie and Case each reminisce about one of their cringe teen dating moments. This week's intermission ads include a horror video game ad, an 80s vampire flick TV spot, and some undetermined Halloween sweet treat ad that you can get by calling and 800 number. In Segment 2 Horror, Etc we dip our toe a little further into the horrors of dating subgenre with a bonus micro-review of 2009's Jennifer's Body.
Episode 20 features one of Hitchcock's classics: Rear Window! During our Comfy Horror Movie Review, Jimmy Stewart pays the DFM family a visit over some Coppola Claret (ok, its just Case messing around) and we talk about this classic piece of Americana thriller cinema. The Mail Wolf has a message from Jake the Midnight Traveler about the evil all around us. In Segment 2, Horror, Etc, Carrie reads a chapter from one of her favorite novels - By the Light of the Moon by Dean Koontz. Case wraps up the episode with our Top 10 Voyeur flicks countdown.
Segment 1, Comfy Horror Movie Reviews: The time: the early 80s. The place: 1 haunted Nazi ghost ship. The movie: Death Ship with the amazing Richard Crenna and George Kennedy. When it comes to horror-on-a-boat flicks, sometimes simple and quick is better. Death Ship is a movie that is light on kills but just works because well, the kills are quirky, the acting is just hammy enough to be fun and quizzical, and the setting and camera work oozes with atmosphere. We really enjoyed this solid film from the legendary director (who has ton a crap ton of other things over a 10+ decade career!) Alvin Rackoff.
Segment 1 - Comfy Horror Movie Review: Carrie and Case are in agreement that the 2005 Creatures in a Cave meet Spelunkers film aka The Descent, doesn't hold up as well. Just our 2¢! Jake the Midnight Traveler checks in with his opposing thoughts. The film has its merits and we do love about half the characters. One in particular earns our very first rotating DFM Award: Best Actor for Playing a Character We Love to Hate!
Please note that Episode 13 is split into 2 parts. In the previous segment, we thumbs down all the creep characters in "Turn Down Any Tape Heist Offer."
Here's to a night of deep sleep, beautiful.
Hollyn and Colie are range riders. Every day during the summer, these highly skilled hired hands ride their horses across the remote, rugged Idaho mountains, pushing cows across sky-high ridges to their final destination. It's hard work for low pay, but the rewards are plentiful: the thrill of the open range, the symbiotic relationship with their animals, and, not least of all, the close bond of friendship with each other. In her magical new documentary “Bitterbrush”, Emmy®, Peabody and Sundance Award-winning filmmaker Emelie Mahdavian (producer/writer/editor, “Midnight Traveler”) poetically and precisely captures the sights, sounds and timeless rhythms of this fiercely beautiful landscape. She also shows us, as few have before, the mutual love and support (and humor) that can happen between two women who care for each other as much as the land that will always be home. Joining Ken for a wide-ranging conversation, Emelie describes how, living in this part of Idaho herself, she came to meet Hollyn and Colie and embark on this unique cinematic journey. In what ways did she avoid the clichés and tropes of the Western genre to forge her own narrative path? How did she and her cinematographers develop the right camera rigs to shoot images both awe-inspiring and intimate in such a challenging environment? And how did a magnetic 12-minute scene reveal as much to Colie about herself as it did to those watching? Saddle up and come along for this fascinating conversational ride. “Bitterbrush” is being released in theaters by Magnolia Pictures starting on June 17th. After being threatened by the Taliban, filmmaker Hassan Fazili was forced to flee Afghanistan. Like thousands of others, he and his family set out for Europe seeking safety and a stable life. What follows is a two-year odyssey that Fazili, wife Fatima Hussaini, and their two daughters carefully documented on video with their phones. From negotiating with people smugglers to hiding in abandoned buildings and being beaten by Bulgarian nationalists, the new documentary "Midnight Traveler" highlights the cruelty and capriciousness of the European Union's asylum system – and a family's strength to persevere. On this special edition of Global Journalist, a look at this remarkable film and an extended interview with producer and writer Emelie Mahdavian. After debuting at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, the film screened at the 2019 True/False Film Festival and became one of the most widely-lauded documentaries of the year. We're back with episode #2 and this week we are talking about borders. Filmmakers Emelie Mahdavian and Su Kim join MacKenzie in the studio to talk about their latest film, Midnight Traveler. Midnight Traveler is a documentary where Afghan director Hassan Fazili is forced to flee the country when the Taliban puts a bounty on his head. We go in deep about the difference between an asylum seeker and a refugee, check out how easy it is to move data over government lines, and check in with our friend, the cinereous vulture.
In 2015, after Hassan Fazili’s documentary Peace in Afghanistan aired on Afghan national television, the Taliban assassinated the film’s main subject and put a price on Fazili’s head. Fearing for their survival, the Fazili family fled Kabul for Tajikistan. Yet after 14 months spent submitting asylum applications that were rejected again and again, they were deported back to Afghanistan. It was at this juncture that Fazili picked up his cell phone and hit the record button and with that Midnight Traveler began to take shape. Chronicling every step from inside the action, Fazili, his filmmaker wife, and their young daughters trek across Iran, Turkey, Bulgaria, and Serbia—scurrying through perilous landscapes, huddling in freezing forests, cramming into rattling vehicles. As they endure smugglers, gangs, and refugee camps, the camera witnesses not only the danger and desperation but also the exuberance and tenderness of this irresistible, loving family. For Fazili, framing their story becomes an assertion of control, humanity, and self-expression in a situation where none exists. With its radical subjectivity, visceral footage, and poetic form, Midnight Traveler is a migration story like no other. Producer Su Kim and Producer / writer / editor Emilie Mahdavian join us for a look at at Hassan and his remarkably resilient family as they attempt to overcome institutional and deadly political obstacles in their fight for freedom as seen through the eyes of his children, Zahra and Nargis and wife, Fatima. A fight for freedom that they have to win.
