On Friday's Mark Levin Show, there is grave concerns over the ongoing war with the Islamist Nazi enemy regime in Iran, which is making increasing demands including billions in aid that should not be provided in any form, as it would only rebuild their terrorist apparatus rather than help the people. The prolonged ceasefire is a mistake after an initially successful campaign. We should have 2 weeks of massive strikes on IRGC targets and arm the Iranian people. Also, the Lebanese president, Joseph Aoun, noted that Lebanon's official government and army are separate from the far more powerful Hezbollah, effectively creating two parallel governments and militaries. Now, amid Hezbollah's ongoing rocket fire (including during a ceasefire), Israel has re-entered to eliminate the threat permanently, focusing on Hezbollah's main base near Beirut. Aoun instructed defensive fighting only, avoiding Beirut. Benjamin Netanyahu affirmed Israel's sovereignty in protecting itself, rejecting any constraints. Later, Rep Byron Donalds calls in and reveals a direct death threat posted on social media, where someone stated they were going to kill him. While politics involves strong opinions, demonizing opponents as non-human erodes civility and can incite violence. However, the government argues that Dr. Aoun's proposed testimony is inadmissible under the Insanity Defense Reform Act of 1984 and Federal Rule of Criminal Procedure 12.2, which govern the introduction of expert testimony related to a defendant's mental condition. Prosecutors contend that Dr. Aoun's opinions lack a reliable scientific basis and appear to be speculative, rendering them unsuitable for presentation to the jury.Additionally, the government asserts that allowing Dr. Aoun's testimony would effectively permit the defense to introduce a mental health defense without adhering to the procedural requirements mandated by law. They argue that the defense has not provided sufficient notice or evidence to support such a defense, and that Dr. Aoun's testimony would serve as a substitute for calling actual witnesses, thereby circumventing the rules of evidence. Líbano salió de 807 días de limbo presidencial. El comandante del ejército, el general Joseph Aoun, recibió el apoyo de 99 de los 128 diputados que votaron en la Cámara. En entrevista con Radio Francia Internacional, Said Chaya, director del Centro de Estudios de Medio Oriente de la Universidad Austral (Argentina) habla de los desafíos para el nuevo presidente de un país en quiebra que hay que reconstruir en medio de una región en plena ebullición. El general Aoun tendrá que extender el consenso que hubo en torno a su figura y lograr nombrar un primer ministro de confesión sunita al gusto de todos. La crisis económica, agravada por la ofensiva militar israelí, será otro de los grandes retos para del presidente libanés. La libra libanesa ha alcanzado 89.000 libras por dólar y los colapsos de los servicios públicos han sumido al país del Cedro en una crisis humanitaria.RFI: ¿Qué hizo que se superaran los escollos de esta elección paralizada durante casi tres años?Said Chaya: El Líbano que quedó sin presidente en octubre de 2022 es un Líbano muy distinto a este de enero de 2025. En primer lugar, la aparición de la problemática de seguridad fortaleció la posibilidad de la elección de un presidente militar. Por otro lado, la debilidad manifiesta de Hezbolá, que ya estaba en una posición de debilidad, pero después de la guerra en Gaza quedó claro que no estaba en condiciones de imponer ningún tipo de candidato. Luego está el escenario de Siria que termina por sepultar las intenciones de imponer un candidato pro sirio en el país. La situación cambió radicalmente. Y el escenario regional moldea fuertemente las políticas domésticas en el Líbano.RFI: Tradicionalmente, el presidente en Líbano procede de la comunidad cristiana maronita. Pero, en este caso las luchas de poder internas y las presiones externas bloquearon el proceso electoral. Por un lado, el movimiento político militar chiita Hezbolá en dúo con Amal, el partido chiita más grande en el Parlamento, veían al general Aoun demasiado alineado con Occidente. Por otro lado, Estados Unidos y Arabia Saudita, presionaron en favor de su elección, enviando incluso a sus representantes que llevaron a cabo intensas reuniones con los diferentes bloques parlamentarios. ¿Cuál es el interés de estas dos potencias extranjeras?Said Chaya: Bien, no nos olvidemos que el Líbano está envuelto en una crisis financiera muy grave. El apoyo de estos dos países es fundamental. En primer lugar, para poder resolver la problemática económica que el país atraviesa, por lo menos, desde el año 2019. En segundo lugar, el hecho de que haya ganado un candidato favorable a la posición estadounidense ayuda a entender que es posible que no se repitan los ataques de Israel como los que vimos contra el territorio libanés. O sea, implica un compromiso por parte de Estados Unidos en esa dirección. Entonces diría, por un lado, el factor de seguridad y por otro, que me parece muy relevante, es el hecho de que se abran varias canillas de tipo económico.RFI: El general Aoun no sólo recibió el apoyo de Estados Unidos y Arabia Saudita, sino que también catalizó a diversos sectores de la política interna. ¿Quién es este militar sin experiencia política que logró el consenso de tan diversos intereses políticos?Said Chaya: Es un general relativamente joven, de 60 años, proveniente de una familia de clase trabajadora de Beirut. Por lo tanto, alejado del concepto tradicional de las familias de la élite que suelen ocupar la presidencia del Líbano. Es un tipo con gran experiencia conduciendo las Fuerzas Armadas que en el Líbano son un factor de gran prestigio. Y en una comunidad donde Irán ha perdido fuerte protagonismo y Hezbolá se ha debilitado.
