Have you heard of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs? It's often taught in dental hygiene school in the context of patient care, but in this episode, Dana uses it to demonstrate how you can use it to find out if your foundational needs are being met. Stress, sleep deprivation, financial pressure, chronic pain, burnout, and self-doubt can affect learning, clinical performance, confidence, and even patient communication in dental hygiene school and early practice. This conversation is a reminder that struggling does not always mean you are incapable—it may mean your brain and body are trying to manage too many unmet needs at once. You'll also hear practical ways to check in with yourself, support overwhelmed dental hygiene patients with more empathy, and create realistic routines that protect your well-being while pursuing long-term growth in dental hygiene school and clinical practice.
I recently joined the That Triathlon Show Podcast with Mikael Eriksson for a deep dive into freestyle technique and what I call the "swim technique hierarchy of needs." In this conversation, we break down the key elements of efficient swimming including breathing, body position, rotation, catch mechanics, timing, and how to adapt your stroke for open-water racing. We also discuss some of the most common mistakes triathletes make in the water, how to fix them, and why many swimmers plateau even when their technique looks good on video. We also get into topics like kick timing, front-quadrant swimming, stroke rate, drills that actually transfer to faster swimming, open-water skills, and what it really takes to become a strong swimmer as an adult-onset triathlete. If you're looking to swim faster, feel more efficient in the water, or better understand how to prioritize your technique work, this episode is packed with practical coaching insights you can apply right away. 03:37 A hierarchy of needs for freestyle technique 07:50 Building the frame of the body 12:20 Kick tempo and stroke rate 17:05 Training the Kick for racing options 18:40 Rotation 23:30 The catch and pull 29:32 YMCA Drill 35:10 Timing and creative freedom in racing 38:20 Speed versus stroke appearance 41:15 The importance of purposeful drills 46:05 Capturing your technique on camera 48:00 The nature of swim talent 52:46 Swim frequency and distance 57:00 Structuring swim workouts 59:01 Intensity distribution across swim sessions 01:03:30 Open water versus pool technique 01:07:20 The importance of drafting 01:08:36 Drafting and preparation for open water 01:15:50 - Racing bravely in the swim 01:18:42 -The Goggles 01:23:50 - Choosing the right lens for conditions

This Deep Dive series revisits some of our past episodes on discerning what we need as moms, and then asking for it confidently. Most of us know about Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, the pyramid pattern through which human needs and motivations generally move upward. We can't worry about what's at the upper levels of the pyramid until and unless the more basic needs at the bottom of the pyramid– food, warmth, safety– are met first. Leslie Forde, founder of Mom's Hierarchy of Needs, has rethought that pyramid for the way we live our lives as mothers. There's a reason there's not enough bandwidth in our lives for fun and connection and self-actualization. Mom's Hierarchy of Needs provides moms with products, research and community to reclaim time from their never-done to-do lists. In this episode, Leslie explains: Why mom's hierarchy of needs is a little different than Maslow's When and why your hierarchy of needs might shift How to prioritize your career, healthy relationships, and self-care in your own hierarchy Leslie says that it's important to realize your health and wellbeing is equal in importance to your children's health and wellbeing, and once you internalize that, you can start to make room for your own needs without feeling guilty or frivolous. "You're not failing because you're not trying hard enough. You're probably just doing the right things at the wrong time." - Tami Stackelhouse Have you ever felt the frustration of doing everything you're supposed to be doing, but nothing seems to be working? You're following the advice and showing up for yourself as best you can, but instead of things getting easier, it feels like you're stuck or even sliding backward. That's a really hard place to be. Over the years, what Tami has seen time and time again is that managing your symptoms is not about doing more or trying harder. Pushing into habits, routines, or even healthy changes before your body or your life is ready can actually backfire. When the foundation isn't ready, even good habits won't help. Understanding where you are and what your body needs at that stage can change everything. In this solo episode, Tami introduces the Fibro Hierarchy of Needs, a framework designed to help you understand why progress can feel so inconsistent and what to focus on instead. She walks through the different layers, from stabilizing your body and environment, to rebuilding connection, trust, and eventually expanding your life beyond symptom management. This episode offers a clearer path forward for anyone who feels stuck, overwhelmed, or like nothing is working, and a way to start aligning your efforts with what your body actually needs right now. In this episode, Tami introduces the Fibro Hierarchy of Needs, a framework designed to help you understand where to focus your efforts at different stages of your fibro journey. She shares the stages of the Fibro Hierarchy of Needs, why progress depends on building from the right foundation, why your body needs to feel safe before habits can stick, reducing chaos and creating a supportive setup around you, the importance of belonging and connection, rebuilding trust in yourself after unpredictable symptoms, expanding your life beyond just managing symptoms, why feeling stuck is usually a problem of perspective, how to identify your next step based on where you are in the hierarchy, guidance and support in moving forward with clarity, giving back and becoming a helper once you have walked the path, remembering that the goal is not just symptom management but building a meaningful life, and more. In this episode, Cody and Ken break down one of the most important educational frameworks Active Life uses with clients: the Hierarchy of Needs for health and performance. While many people believe progress starts with workouts or specific exercises, this conversation explains why long-term success actually begins with much more foundational elements like stress management, sleep, and lifestyle structure. The discussion explores how clients often arrive focused on surface-level goals like getting stronger, losing weight, or improving performance, while the deeper obstacles preventing progress live much lower in the hierarchy. Cody and Ken explain how coaches can help clients identify which layer of the hierarchy they're currently struggling with, and why skipping foundational pieces often leads to frustration, setbacks, or stalled progress.By the end of the episode, listeners walk away with a clear understanding of how to use this hierarchy as a coaching tool to guide conversations, set realistic expectations, and help clients focus on the right priorities at the right time. For coaches looking to deliver deeper value beyond programming workouts, this framework provides a practical way to create real, lasting transformation.

Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs is one of the best-known theories in psychology. First introduced in 1943, the theory posits that people have an innate desire to reach their maximum potential, but to achieve this goal, they must first have their basic needs met. These needs can be both physical and psychological, but they play a major role in understanding people's motivations. Learn more about Maslow's hierarchy of needs, how they came to be, and how the psychology behind it can be used to explain human behavior on this episode of Everything Everywhere Daily. Is Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs biblical? Is Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs compatible with Christian/biblical counseling?
In this week's episode of Lessons from a Quitter, we dive into an unpolished but powerful reflection on Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs and how understanding it can help us navigate uncertainty and reduce unnecessary suffering. We explore the difference between "clean" and "dirty" pain and how our brains are wired to always look for problems—even when life is objectively good. By recognizing where we are on the hierarchy, we can cultivate more compassion for ourselves, redirect our minds toward meaningful goals, and find gratitude for the structure and challenges that keep us grounded, even in seasons of self-doubt or transition.

In this episode, Caitlin takes a flamethrower to Maslow's hierarchy of needs, the capitalist grind that keeps us from self-actualizing. They unpack the ways hustle culture, capitalism, and patriarchal conditioning have taught us to earn joy, rest, and creativity—when in reality, it's our birthright! From talking about your creative drives as fundamental needs to revealing the original Blackfoot nation model that Maslow "borrowed" from (and then warped), Caitlin helps us reimagine what it means to be a fully expressed human.

In this helpful parenting and personal development episode, I have a great conversation with Annette Evans Wilson, who brings both wisdom and professional experience to the topic of navigating family changes, especially during divorce. Annette begins by sharing her journey of overcoming self-doubt and discouragement that began in childhood, where she was surrounded by limiting beliefs echoed by family members. Despite this, she found the determination to pursue her dream of becoming an English teacher, and later, to create the YOU Life Skills and Leadership Educational Foundation after retirement. Her foundation focuses on supporting youth in self-discovery, empathy-building, and community engagement. We talk, the discussion turns to Annette's years teaching in a challenging inner-city school environment, where she noticed that her students, and their parents, benefited from structured self-reflection and a supportive approach. Drawing from her classroom experience, Annette emphasizes the value of encouraging young people, and by extension their families, to change the narrative from “I can't” to “Maybe I can't, but I will.” She highlights the importance of exploring Maslow's hierarchy of needs not just for children, but for adults as well, recognizing how foundational needs, safety, and a sense of belonging must be addressed in times of upheaval.Annette describes how her workbook, “Know Yourself,” is set up for families to use together, providing practical exercises that foster honest conversations and deeper self-awareness. She underlines how tools like the identity wheel help families recognize that beliefs and values are shaped by various influences—family, culture, and personal experience—and that developing authenticity is an ongoing journey for everyone. Annette introduces the term “teenitude” to help parents reframe and appreciate the changes their children experience in adolescence as opportunities for growth rather than conflict.Annette's insights remind families that everyone's perspectives are shaped by their experiences, and that embracing these differences can create more resilient, connected households, even in the midst of change. Through practical advice and genuine warmth, this conversation offers reassurance that with empathy and open communication, families can thrive through life's transitions.About the Guest:Annette Evans Wilson overcame personal and societal obstacles to become a dedicated English teacher, positively impacting the lives of countless young people in a challenging environment. Her mantra "maybe I can't, but I will" empowered her students to surpass limitations and achieve their goals. Notably, she mentored the first female college football head coach in the US. Following her retirement, Annette established the YOU Life Skills and Leadership Educational Foundation to continue guiding youth in self-discovery, community service, and empathy. With her own sons thriving in diverse careers, she advocates for recognizing and nurturing individual differences to foster success. For Annette's gift: email annette@youlsl.org with "authenticity" in the subject for a signed copy of my book "Know Yourself: How to Enjoy an Authentic Life"To connect with Annette:Website: www.youlsl.org LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/youlsl/About the Host: Mardi Winder-Adams is an ICF and BCC Executive and Leadership Coach, Certified Divorce Transition Coach, Certified Divorce Specialist (CDS®) and a Credentialed Distinguished Mediator in Texas. Your best life is built sequentially, one level at a time. Forget the elevator, climb all the stairs to the top, and you'll have lasting success. In 1954, Abraham Maslow released Motivation and Personality. His Hierarchy of needs theory is all about climbing to the top. Maslow suggested that to reach your full potential: 1) You must provide for your physiological needs: food, clothing, shelter, money, and more. 2) You must feel safe. Personally, emotionally, financially, with health and well-being, and against accidents and illness. 3) Socially you need to feel a sense of loving and belonging. 4) Esteem and the desire for acceptance, respect, and value by others is your next step. Maslow said, “What a man can be, he must be.” Self-actualization requires mastery of your previous needs. 5) Self-transcendence removes you from ego and begins your focus on the greater good. Your best life is built sequentially one level at a time. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

It aims to help you understand why it is so important to reach for the stars, and not settle for less during your birth experience, and to understand that if you don't try, then you are unlikely to succeed.Sheryl brilliantly outlines why you should take care of your physiological and safety needs, and how important it is to recognise what makes you feel safe. So, take notes and also be sure to send this episode to your partner to help them understand the importance of how each rung of the ladder supports you to get closer to your dream birth. 60. Have you heard of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs? You've probably seen the diagram - a pyramid table with basic level needs on the bottom (food, shelter, community) and growth-based needs on top (purpose, fulfillment, self-esteem). In my constant quest for finding The Point of it all, I decided to sit down and flesh out my own personalized hierarchy of needs, and today I'm sharing with you!

I'm taking aim at Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs. Maslow first introduced the concept of a hierarchy of needs in his 1943 paper, titled "A Theory of Human Motivation.” The point was to showcase that people are motivated to fulfill basic needs before moving on to other, more advanced needs. What I want you to pay attention to and consider is that Maslow showed us what we tend to do. Not what is best. He was just reporting. Yet as a culture we seem to have taken his reporting of what we tend to do as what we should do. When I go to the coffee shop and pass the pastries I tend to want one. If I was a caveman I'd just take one and eat to survive. However, I'm not a caveman. I don't at all need that pastry and the sugar and gluten would not serve me best, so I pass it by. Most of the time. I'm not a total masochist. But I've evolved beyond survival. But as a culture we still look to the basic needs as our priority and even our status symbols. What if our level of self-actualization, self worth and relational was as apparent as our ability to job, money and belongings? Maslow's pyramid I find more valuable as a relic of something we've evolved beyond than a guideline. Got a comment or question about an episode? Want to ask a question about your drive? Email me. In Episode 1633, Sean Woodley goes solo to assess the Toronto Raptors biggest offseason holes that need filling by ranking them in a little excercise we're calling "Masai's Hierarchy of Needs." Sean spends time talking about the Raptors' need for two-way wings, a third rotation big man to pair with Kelly Olynyk and Jakob Poeltl, and a backup point guard. He ranks those areas of need from most to least pressing, digs into potential in-house solutions the Raptors might already have on their roster, runs through the avenues to address them, be it through the NBA Draft, trades or free agency, and outlines the the pie-in-the-sky dream scenarios, realistic outcomes, and the absolute worst-case solutions the Raptors front office could come up with. Could Alex Sarr be the dream third big the Raptors if they get some lottery luck? Is the long con of the New York Knicks going to culminate in OG Anunoby's surprised return to Toronto as a free agent? And could the Raptors get silly and overpay for middling 5th starts or bench guys? Those possibilities and more are all discussed on today's show! Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs Your best life is built sequentially, one level at a time. Forget the elevator. Climb all the stairs to the top, and you'll have lasting success. In 1954, Abraham Maslow released Motivation and Personality. His Hierarchy of needs theory is all about climbing to the top. Maslow suggested that to reach your full potential: 1) You must provide for your physiological needs. Food, clothing, shelter, money, and more. 2) You must feel safe. Personally, emotionally, financially, health and well-being, and against accidents and illness. 3) Socially, you need to feel love and belonging. 4) Esteem and the desire for acceptance, respect, and value by others is your next step. Self-actualization requires mastery of your previous needs. Maslow said, “What a man can be, he must be.” 5) Self-transcendence removes you from your ego and begins your focus on the greater good. Your best life is built sequentially, one level at a time. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Decades ago, Abraham Maslow outlined a hierarchy of needs. We take this idea and translate it into athletic performance.
