In this helpful parenting and personal development episode, I have a great conversation with Annette Evans Wilson, who brings both wisdom and professional experience to the topic of navigating family changes, especially during divorce. Annette begins by sharing her journey of overcoming self-doubt and discouragement that began in childhood, where she was surrounded by limiting beliefs echoed by family members. Despite this, she found the determination to pursue her dream of becoming an English teacher, and later, to create the YOU Life Skills and Leadership Educational Foundation after retirement. Her foundation focuses on supporting youth in self-discovery, empathy-building, and community engagement. We talk, the discussion turns to Annette's years teaching in a challenging inner-city school environment, where she noticed that her students, and their parents, benefited from structured self-reflection and a supportive approach. Drawing from her classroom experience, Annette emphasizes the value of encouraging young people, and by extension their families, to change the narrative from “I can't” to “Maybe I can't, but I will.” She highlights the importance of exploring Maslow's hierarchy of needs not just for children, but for adults as well, recognizing how foundational needs, safety, and a sense of belonging must be addressed in times of upheaval.Annette describes how her workbook, “Know Yourself,” is set up for families to use together, providing practical exercises that foster honest conversations and deeper self-awareness. She underlines how tools like the identity wheel help families recognize that beliefs and values are shaped by various influences—family, culture, and personal experience—and that developing authenticity is an ongoing journey for everyone. Annette introduces the term “teenitude” to help parents reframe and appreciate the changes their children experience in adolescence as opportunities for growth rather than conflict.Annette's insights remind families that everyone's perspectives are shaped by their experiences, and that embracing these differences can create more resilient, connected households, even in the midst of change. Through practical advice and genuine warmth, this conversation offers reassurance that with empathy and open communication, families can thrive through life's transitions.About the Guest:Annette Evans Wilson overcame personal and societal obstacles to become a dedicated English teacher, positively impacting the lives of countless young people in a challenging environment. Her mantra "maybe I can't, but I will" empowered her students to surpass limitations and achieve their goals. Notably, she mentored the first female college football head coach in the US. Following her retirement, Annette established the YOU Life Skills and Leadership Educational Foundation to continue guiding youth in self-discovery, community service, and empathy. With her own sons thriving in diverse careers, she advocates for recognizing and nurturing individual differences to foster success. For Annette's gift: email annette@youlsl.org with "authenticity" in the subject for a signed copy of my book "Know Yourself: How to Enjoy an Authentic Life"To connect with Annette:Website: www.youlsl.org LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/youlsl/About the Host: Mardi Winder-Adams is an ICF and BCC Executive and Leadership Coach, Certified Divorce Transition Coach, Certified Divorce Specialist (CDS®) and a Credentialed Distinguished Mediator in Texas. Your best life is built sequentially, one level at a time. Forget the elevator, climb all the stairs to the top, and you'll have lasting success. In 1954, Abraham Maslow released Motivation and Personality. His Hierarchy of needs theory is all about climbing to the top. Maslow suggested that to reach your full potential: 1) You must provide for your physiological needs: food, clothing, shelter, money, and more. 2) You must feel safe. Personally, emotionally, financially, with health and well-being, and against accidents and illness. 3) Socially you need to feel a sense of loving and belonging. 4) Esteem and the desire for acceptance, respect, and value by others is your next step. Maslow said, “What a man can be, he must be.” Self-actualization requires mastery of your previous needs. 5) Self-transcendence removes you from ego and begins your focus on the greater good. https://suespeaks.org/ Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon - and Abraham Maslow. It's closer than you think. I wrote earlier this week about how Maslow's hierarchy of needs had a profound effect on me in my early years. I discovered Maslow's hierarchy of needs when I was eleven years old. Understanding that hierarchy as an eleven-year-old made me feel that I was enlightened; like I knew something most other people didn't. I didn't know the whole story. Maslow's hierarchy of needs is a very useful tool. However, I had never considered that it comes from a very distinct worldview with its own assumptions and biases. That doesn't make it wrong or evil, just incomplete. I only recently learned how incomplete. In 1938, Maslow traveled to Northern Alberta, Canada where one of four Blackfoot (also known as the Siksika) Nations is located. This was the traditional territory of the Blackfoot Nation. Maslow spent six weeks with the Blackfoot Nation as part of his research. Analysis of his work shows that he really didn't understand their ways of knowing. It appears that Maslow may have been influenced by the Blackfoot. Later in his life, he questioned his hierarchy, but it does not appear he based his hierarchy on their worldview. A common criticism of Maslow's hierarchy is that it is rather individualistic, and comes from an individual-centered society, not a collective-focused society. Maslow found the Blackfoot “a very generous people” and said, “They seem definitely not to have any major anxieties or repressed aggression.” These were things he was expecting, because they were prominent in the world he came from, and he found it odd that a culture could be less anxious and less aggressive than what he had known from his previous experiences. Maslow describes their society as unusual. From his point of view, it was. Maslow experienced the Blackfoot people from a very Euro-centric point of view. He didn't come out and say that their culture was inferior, but by calling it unusual he seems to be categorizing it as something “less than” his own. I'm not being overly critical of Maslow. He was a man of his time, and I'm not surprised by the reactions of a white man in an Indigenous culture 80 years ago being one of misunderstanding and bemusement. He isn't dismissive of the Blackfoot people. He liked and admired them. But he didn't seem to get it. He didn't seem to understand that the Blackfoot way of looking at the world could be superior to his in some ways or could lead to better outcomes. Maslow's perspective was narrow. He had not had many cultural experiences outside of European traditions. He didn't understand their culture. It looks like he may have understood them better later in life, but we will get to that. First, let's learn more about the Blackfoot worldview.

I'm taking aim at Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs. Maslow first introduced the concept of a hierarchy of needs in his 1943 paper, titled "A Theory of Human Motivation.” The point was to showcase that people are motivated to fulfill basic needs before moving on to other, more advanced needs. What I want you to pay attention to and consider is that Maslow showed us what we tend to do. Not what is best. He was just reporting. Yet as a culture we seem to have taken his reporting of what we tend to do as what we should do. When I go to the coffee shop and pass the pastries I tend to want one. If I was a caveman I'd just take one and eat to survive. However, I'm not a caveman. I don't at all need that pastry and the sugar and gluten would not serve me best, so I pass it by. Most of the time. I'm not a total masochist. But I've evolved beyond survival. But as a culture we still look to the basic needs as our priority and even our status symbols. What if our level of self-actualization, self worth and relational was as apparent as our ability to job, money and belongings? Maslow's pyramid I find more valuable as a relic of something we've evolved beyond than a guideline. Got a comment or question about an episode? Want to ask a question about your drive? Email me. In Episode 1633, Sean Woodley goes solo to assess the Toronto Raptors biggest offseason holes that need filling by ranking them in a little excercise we're calling "Masai's Hierarchy of Needs." Sean spends time talking about the Raptors' need for two-way wings, a third rotation big man to pair with Kelly Olynyk and Jakob Poeltl, and a backup point guard. He ranks those areas of need from most to least pressing, digs into potential in-house solutions the Raptors might already have on their roster, runs through the avenues to address them, be it through the NBA Draft, trades or free agency, and outlines the the pie-in-the-sky dream scenarios, realistic outcomes, and the absolute worst-case solutions the Raptors front office could come up with. Could Alex Sarr be the dream third big the Raptors if they get some lottery luck? Is the long con of the New York Knicks going to culminate in OG Anunoby's surprised return to Toronto as a free agent? Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs Your best life is built sequentially, one level at a time. Forget the elevator. Climb all the stairs to the top, and you'll have lasting success. In 1954, Abraham Maslow released Motivation and Personality. His Hierarchy of needs theory is all about climbing to the top. Maslow suggested that to reach your full potential: 1) You must provide for your physiological needs. Food, clothing, shelter, money, and more. 2) You must feel safe. Personally, emotionally, financially, health and well-being, and against accidents and illness. 3) Socially, you need to feel love and belonging. 4) Esteem and the desire for acceptance, respect, and value by others is your next step. Self-actualization requires mastery of your previous needs. Maslow said, “What a man can be, he must be.” 5) Self-transcendence removes you from your ego and begins your focus on the greater good. Many parents, particularly moms, feel like taking care of your health and well-being only comes after your family's needs are met. That essentially means that there's no time left for any form of self-care. But today's guest discusses how we can take better care of ourselves and in doing so, take better care of the ones we love. Leslie Forde is the CEO and Founder of Mom's Hierarchy of Needs®. Her business provides evidence-based tools for moms to reclaim time from the never-done list for well-being. And she helps employers retain caregivers. Over 3,500 parents have participated since March of 2020 in the Mom's Hierarchy of Needs research study - the longest running study of its kind about the pandemic's ongoing impact on the work/life, care, and wellness needs of parents. Show Notes: [2:45] - Leslie returned to work after a second maternity leave and didn't learn the importance of a mom's hierarchy of needs until she completely burned out. [4:19] - When she went back to work, she felt like the answer was to just work “harder.” [5:26] - In hindsight, there were a lot of signs that she was not okay. Everyone was flourishing except for her. [7:46] - Mom's Hierarchy of Needs has self-care at the top. But the reason we don't spend time on this is because the other things are never done. [10:28] - If you think that you will start something for yourself when something else is done, you will never start. [11:58] - Health problems for moms often don't show up until later in life and can be attributed to ignoring self-care practices. [14:10] - Leslie shares a story about making cookies and how a hobby can turn into something stressful. [15:51] - Your health and well-being is of equal importance to your children's health and well-being. [16:55] - Consequences of ignoring health are gradual and it could feel easier to put it off compared to more immediate consequences of focusing on your family. [18:38] - Perfection is not critical. Be flexible and find a set of practices that work for you. [19:59] - Mom-guilt is real and it is a heavy weight. [21:57] - Navigating the health and unique needs of a neurodiverse child is huge and a significant amount of work. [23:08] - Awareness and education is improving and is better than it's ever been. But the systems in place are still not designed to help those who learn and think differently. [25:12] - Give yourself achievable goals that will make you feel the success of accomplishing work that needs to be done, but in more manageable ways. [26:12] - Guilt can be paralyzing, depressing, and decelerating. [27:36] - Self-care doesn't mean a spa day. It could mean a good night's sleep or a healthy meal. [29:03] - Find the resources that will help you. Your commitment is not to solve the problem. You don't have to do it alone. [30:32] - Pick something from the top of Mom's Hierarchy of Needs and make it a habit. [33:37] - If you can create a routine out of something, it will relieve a lot of the mental load of maintaining it. [36:46] - Defer, eliminate, outsource, or spouse source things that are too much to manage at once. About Our Guest: Leslie has used research to inform growth and innovation strategy for over 20 years. Putting Your Happiness First (Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs) Dr. Abraham Maslow postulated the "Hierarchy of Needs." They include physiological needs, security and safety needs, social needs, esteem needs, and self-actualized needs. In this talk, we explore the benefits of making self-actualized needs our primary focus and see how this positively influences our lower needs. Thank you for joining us for our 2nd Cabral HouseCall of the weekend! I'm looking forward to sharing with you some of our community's questions that have come in over the past few weeks… Lorena: What are your thoughts on Anti EMR paint? Would you say it's legit at blocking emf? Bridgette: Hi Stephen Cabral, I am a student of yours taking the integrative health practitioner course. I can't thank you enough for all of the work you have done and continue to do. I thank God for you. I am thoroughly enjoying this course and am in awe with how much prep work you have done for us all. I can't thank you enough! I am physically feeling the best I have felt in years! I have a question regarding Maslow's hierarchy of needs. For the basic physiological needs, you mention sex being one of them and I was wondering if you would elaborate on this. Please forgive me as this isn't exactly a health question but I would really love some deeper clarity if possible, as I have struggled for years with knowing how exactly I want to relate to sex and intimacy. I am 32 years old and have been so disconnected from intimacy and sex, I seem to always be asking myself if this is whats healthiest for me. I don't know what the answer is. Can you please explain why sex is one of the basic physiological needs? Of course it's needed for pro-creation, but is it actually needed and necessary to be a balanced healthy happy being, climbing the pyramid to self-actualization? I would really love to hear your thoughts. Like I mentioned above, I have been confused about this for years. Thanks! Sarah: Hi Dr Cabral, thank you for all you do, I have learned so much from you. I have a friend who's son has just been diagnosed with pethres disease. I can't find anything on this and I wondered what your thoughts were on it and what you would do if your daughter had it? I appreciate you, thank you. Sara: Hey Dr. Cabral what do you think about using castor oil while you're in the sauna for additional detox support combined with heat? Tamara: What do you think for a post menopausal women taking strontium? My doctor recommended it after my bone density test came back borderline for osteoporosis. I am now taking calmag and DNS shake everyday along with this product. Wondering what you thought about this product and vs your bone supplement. Thanks for everything you do. Rob: Hi Doc! I hope you can help me as I've been feeling very confused lately. I've ran all of my labs and I've done all protocols: 21 day detox, CBO, heavy metal, take my DNS, omega 3, vitamin D, mag-cal, zinc etc every day. I'm 32 year old Vata/Pitta, eat mostly plant-based with approx 60g of protein everyday. All organic. My labs show high estrogen and Adrenal phase 3 (burnout). I have a corporate job so I'm not surprised about the burnout and I've been making some lifestyle changes such as quitting strength training for now and just doing yoga and 10k steps and 1h meditation everyday. So I'm working hard to elevate those cortisol levels again but I'm confused about the high estrogen. I probably eat soy twice a week from tofu but that's pretty much eat and I'm not really exposed to any xenoestrogens since everything at home is natural. No oestrogen-based red meat either... Help?
