When I first walked into Flowerland of Athens to sit down with Matt Turbeville, I loved how warm and welcoming it felt. A mix of old school decorations and Athens flair make the showroom floor the happening place to be. So, that's where Matt and I sat down to do our interview! Being basically seated in the entranceway does mean there is some background conversations and noise which can be a little distracting. I apologize to my fellow neurodivergents who may get distracted while listening. However, I wanted to capture the experience of Flowerland and I absolutely believe I accomplished that! Matt has worked with Jan Hudgins and Deborah Fuller, the co-owners of Flowerland for over 3 years now. While Flowerland has been open 51 years, making it an Athens staple, it has always been a family business. It was first owned by Jan and Deborah's mother, and they both worked in the shop as teenagers. I'll let Matt tell you how he joined the team back in 2018, since I don't want to spoil anything from the interview! Matt and I first agreed to sit down together after I called the shop one recent morning to find out who was responsible for the always fun, often inspiring marquee sign statements. If you've drive down Prince and turned onto Milledge at that corner, you've seen the marquee I speak of. Be sure to visit the littledecisionspodcast.com blog to view past signs that you may recognize! Matt and I became fast friends during our interview, and I would be remiss if I didn't take a moment to thank Matt with my whole heart for agreeing to talk with me not just about how fun it is to create inspiring messages for the community to see, but for so much more. He shared his truth with me so that I could present it to you, and that's a beautiful thing. In episode 10 of the little decisions podcast, Victoria welcomes everyone back after a short break last week! During the introduction and welcome, Victoria introduces the idea of today's episode: find balance and how it relates to kindness, especially kindness towards oneself! In housekeeping, Victoria talks about the interviews she has done and those coming up! "Now feels like a good time to explain to you the purpose and point of all these interviews. They are kindness out in the community, being practiced in the real world. For example, Sandy Bird from lucky dog agility, her interview was choked full of kindness. From the surprise barn warming story to the use of positive reinforcement as a training method.       I am also trying to build a sense of community, to show you how prevalent kindness is in the Athens and Winterville community. This is why I have interviews coming up with a wide swath of Winterville and Athens. I have upcoming interviews with the following folks : David Mathews-Morgan of Winterville; Squalle, local rapper of Athens; Jack Eisenman, poet of Winterville; Jeff Fallis, 1st poet laureate of Athens!        I also have a whole series of interviews setting up spooky season which is September and October for us committed folks. This series will include interviews with Classic City crime podcast host Cameron Jay, local journalist & according to his Instagram page, 6 time blockbuster video employee of the month Andrew Shearer and Ghost of Athens book author Tracy Adkins to name a few!!! Needless to say things have been gangbusters around here. "    In words matter, Victoria ties in finding balance to the 8 areas of self care from episode 3! "I like to think that the 8 areas of self care I mentioned in episode 3 are the roots of finding balance. Those areas are: physical, psychological, emotional, environmental, spiritual, social, professional and personal. When determining if you have found balance within yourself and your life, use these areas and check off each one. Think of these as stop gaps to preventing a serious breakdown. There isn't a single person that has it all together, Beyonce comes close, but even queen B must take care of herself and have some balance! So, what are you doing to feed yourself and find balance in this life? That's words matter."Quotes          I want to share 5 quotes this week that have kept me motivated and even inspired. 1.   “be the reason someone believes in the goodness of people” by Karen Salawohn2.   “so many gods, so many creeds, so many paths that wind and wind, while just the art of being kind is all the sad world needs” by Ella Wheeler Wilcox3.   “we think too much and feel too little. More than machinery, we need humanity. More than cleverness, we need kindness and gentleness. Charlie 4.   “when I was young, I admired clever people. Now I am old, I admire kind people” by Abraham Joshua Heschel“kindness is just love with its work boots on”-unknown Calendar:Month of September: National Library Card Sign Up Month!!! interview with Sandy Bird of Lucky Dog Agility in Winterville

Hello and welcome to little decisions interviews! I have something very special for you today! I met Sandy Bird one bright and beautiful morning recently  at Lucky Dog Agility, a dog sports training facility off Arnoldsville Rd in Winterville, Ga! She was accompanied by her training dog and companion, Asta. Asta is a Pyrenean sheepdog. She looks like a typical sheepdog: grey, long haired with short but not stubby legs. I basically walked right in and immediately began asking questions of Sandra(and petting Asta of course)! Wikipedia divides dog sports into the following sports groups: QUOTE “herding, obedience, protection, pulling, racing, tracking & hunting, or water sports.”END QUOTE Dog sports are a way to build confidence in both handler and dog, as well as team work and communication. Agility is a niche sport all on it's own, it's a speed sport. So what is agility exactly?  According to Wikipedia, quote“Dog agility is a dog sport in which a handler directs a dog through an obstacle course in a race for both time and accuracy. Dogs run off leash with no food or toys as incentives, and the handler can touch neither dog nor obstacles. The handler's controls are limited to voice, movement, and various body signals, requiring exceptional training of the animal and coordination of the handler.” end quote And what about the course the dog runs for agility? Continuing from Wikipedia, quote “An agility course consists of a set of standard obstacles laid out by a judge in a design of his or her own choosing in an area of a specified size. The surface may be of grass, dirt, rubber, or special matting. Depending on the type of competition, the obstacles may be marked with numbers indicating the order in which they must be completed. Courses are complicated enough that a dog could not complete them correctly without human direction. In competition, the handler must assess the course, decide on handling strategies, and direct the dog through the course, with precision and speed equally important. Many strategies exist to compensate for the inherent difference in human and dog speeds and the strengths and weaknesses of the various dogs and handlers.”end quoteAgility is best trained through positive reinforcement, through methods like shaping which is when a handler must patiently wait for the dog to perform a certain task and will then immediately reward the behavior. Thus trying to shape the way the animal behaves! Sandra has a passion for dogs and dogs sports that is quietly contagious. Being semi-retired, she now has the opportunity to take classes as well as teach them! Lucky dog agility is the embodiment of kindness in practice! The use of positive reinforcement for training gets the dogs and handlers excited about doing agility! Such exercises build better connections between the dog and it's owner and all of these things create a community of kindness around dog sports!!! Edward says through his website “I saw fighting cancer as a negative, so decided to dance with it instead.”          “Spreading smiles, being positive and living a life of joy are some of my things”. Edward continues online, “I have no idea where this adventure will take me, how it will be funded or what is going to happen.” “I lost a child, my business, my home, got divorced and almost lost my life. I know firsthand how much difference a smile, laughter and a few words of encouragement made in my life and that I will make in the lives of others.”     I caught up with Eddy while he is visiting the Adirondacks, in the notheastern part of NY state. She shows the world she is not above recording a toddler telling her no. After that behind the scenes market adventure, Victoria goes to calendar and local news!      National bargain hunting week- 2nd week in august    National be kind to humankind week- last week in august     Winterville center for community & culture has new classes coming   Other misc local events including Twilight(8/20-8/21) and Brewfest (8/28)Victoria then tests you memory in a light hearted segment called do you member: pez dispensers. After having discovered there is a reason for the shape of the pez dispenser and how to load the candy that most people don't know about. She leaves the audience hanging by suggesting they go to the little decisions Youtube channel to see how you're supposed to load that contraption. Victoria shares a kind story because kindness is what it's all about. Victoria then discusses the question of the week and more specifically, how she picked the questions this week. In episode 3 of the little decisions Podcast, Victoria talks about practicing self-care, sharing the 8 slices of the self-care pie! Life is not a pie, but self-care is. The 8 slices and suggestions for self-care are below: PhysicalPsychologicalEmotionalEnvironmentalSpiritualSocialProfessionalPersonal the World Health Organization's 1998 definition: ‘Self-Care is what people do for themselves to establish and maintain health, and to prevent and deal with illness. It is a broad concept encompassing hygiene (general and personal), nutrition (type and quality of food eaten), lifestyle (sporting activities, leisure etc), environmental factors (living conditions, social habits, etc.) socio-economic factors (income level, cultural beliefs, etc.) and self-medication.'-          The international self-care foundation has written a manifesto for Self-Care” which has several areas of note. Question of the Week:  Self-care survey: 12 in person responses, 2 digital responses. Almost 70% of total responses define self care as: The practice of taking action to preserve or improve one's own health. In the news… a.      Drug overdose deaths in 2020 hit highest number ever recorded, CDC datDrug overdose deaths in 2020 hit highest number ever recorded, CDC data says this week. This is an increase of almost 30%, going from 72,151 to 93,000 and that's just those reported. Addiction is a coping skill gone terribly awry; it's also a deadly form of self-care. b.      Netflix's Fear street has a retro twist to it! Part 1 Is set in 1994, part 2 in 1978 & the conclusion will go Way way back to 1666 (series finale this Friday). Loosely based on R.L.Stine's novel with the same name, its another streaming experiment with closely staggered releases of each part (in 3). The 990s were a golden age of horror, teens exploring the genre through movies like Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer, which became “classics” of the era. There was also Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Are You Afraid of the Dark that were also popular at the time.  Books by R.L. Stine also contributed to the “spooky” feeling the 90s had. c.       This is neat. International Self-care day is coming up on July 24th. The month and day were chosen purposely, (the 7th month, the 24th day) since the benefits of self-care can be experienced 24 hrs a day/ 7 days a week. !On this day, July 15th: a.      1988 "Die Hard" directed by John McTiernan and starring Bruce Willis and Alan Rickman is released in the USb.      1972 "Honky Chateau" becomes Elton John's first No. 1 album in the US, includes hit "Rocket Man"c.       1996 Prince Charles and Princess Diana sign divorce papersAt the Market:a.      Thank troublesome farms and mayor Dodd for their hospitality last weekend in hosting a small gathering of us market vendors to celebrate the start of the season in style. b.      Thank the piper (which is a bagpipe player) for the serenade to end the market). He was playing for a funeral and I'm reminded of the phrase “memento Mori” , “remember you must die” and hope that you find joy and kindness in all the little decisions you make today.  Support the show (https://www.paypal.com/donate?business=3ETJ2WW4FUWSY&no_recurring=0&item_name=Podcast+fundraising¤cy_code=USD)

In the first interview for the little decisions podcast, Victoria talks with Christian Montcriol of Winterville, Ga, a lovely market patron who on occasion, can be found at the Marigold market playing his accordion. This is where I first met Mr. Montcriol and asked him if we could meet for an interview. We met at Pittard Park recently to discuss kindness, connection and community through topics that include local jobs, Winterville specific community favorites and how each of us appreciates the town of Winterville and it's citizens! The audio at times can be hard to hear because we were outside at a park, this is the interview almost in it's entirety. Below is specific follow up information to the interview, including links to places and things you might not be familiar with! Enjoy!    -Mr Montcriol has been blogging since November 2007, when he arrived in the United States of America.  - You can subscribe to Mr Montcriol's blog here: http://americano.over-blog.net/ Winterville locations specifically mentioned:  Train DepotSupport the show (https://www.paypal.com/donate?business=3ETJ2WW4FUWSY&no_recurring=0&item_name=Podcast+fundraising¤cy_code=USD)

    episode 2: be kind

In episode 2, Victoria talks about how to live and be kind. Thank you first to Josh Green for his help with the new theme song for little decisions! Why be kind? Often you have a choice, so choosing to be kind (especially when someone else isn't) can be a powerful thing. Being kind is also a life philosophy and part of my moral compass.   In "Words Matter", kindness is defined as being attentive, considerate & thoughtful both to others and to yourself. Try to be kind through all your decisions, especially those little automatic ones. Being kind does not require self-sacrificing. The next episode will discuss  more on being kind to yourself through the lens of self-care.  In "Question of the Week", Victoria asks listeners & Marigold market attendees: "Are you a kind person? Why or why not". She discusses both the commonalities found in people's answers as well as some surprises that appeared! Victoria also discusses the power of self-criticism and just how important being kind to yourself really is.   In "Quotes", Victoria shares the following quotes for inspiration. 1.    “A kind gesture can reach a wound that only compassion can heal” (true for me with kindness towards myself)- Steve Maraboli 2.    “I think probably kindness is my number one attribute in a human being. I'll put it before any of the things like courage, or bravery, or generosity or anything else” – roald Dahl (famous author) 3.    “kindness can become its own motive. We are made kind by being kind.”- eric hoffer 4.    “a part of kindness consists in loving people more than they deserve.”- joseph Joubert  In "Connections to the past", Victoria discusses the ideology of peace, love & understanding which dominated the psyche in the 1970s and why that is important today.  In "Community", highlights from recent and next Marigold market are given!  The episode ends with a "Call to Action" where every listener is encouraged to find fun & unique ways to be kind to others. Support the show (https://www.paypal.com/donate?business=3ETJ2WW4FUWSY&no_recurring=0&item_name=Podcast+fundraising¤cy_code=USD)

Episode 1 Choose Gratitude   This variety show styled episode includes a wide perspective of the idea of gratitude. The episode begins with the Words Matter segment, in which gratitude and how to practice it are discussed. After discussing kindness and gratitude as a way of living, Victoria shares some quotes related to the topic of gratitude. These quotes from Princess Diana, Franklin D Roosevelt, Mark Twain & Oprah are used to inspire one to put these ideas into practice. Since Victoria was not at the Marigold Market last weekend, the question of the week is simply explained. The market is the best way to become a guest on the podcast! We then travel back in time to the Nostalgia Corner to discuss how the Care Bears embody gratitude! Victoria then ends the show with a preview of what will be next at the market this weekend and on the next episode of little decisions! Support the show (https://www.paypal.com/donate?business=3ETJ2WW4FUWSY&no_recurring=0&item_name=Podcast+fundraising¤cy_code=USD)
