Tony Waller is the Vice President of Constituent Relations and Racial Equity at Walmart, the host of Walmart’s Real Talk At The Barber Shop and currently spearheading several campaigns surrounding the company’s commitment to community wellness, health and racial equity. Tony was born in the U.S. but raised in Puerto Rico. His family moved back to the states when he was a teenager where he experienced his first real experiences with race. He shares his struggles to fit in and the importance of taking care of one’s mental health. Tony also shares the great opportunity he received from retail giant Walmart to really make a difference in communities of color. Tony talks about Walmart’s commitment to diversity and inclusion, and their program, Mejor Contigo, “Better with you” which highlights Latino success stories inside and outside of the company. Tony is a larger than life personality with such a smart and unique perspective in which he sees the world. I think you will really enjoy this episode and listening to Tony speak as much as I have. This episode is sponsored by Walmart. Key Takeaways “It’s important to be comfortable with who you are.” When Tony moved from Puerto Rico to the mainland, he was not prepared for the racial differences and the questions people would ask him. People had a hard time figuring out Tony’s background. He didn’t feel like he fit in. High School was one of the hardest times of Tony’s life, but he’s grateful for it. Therapy is so important for our mental well-being. We go to the dentist and the doctor, why not also go to a therapist to get your head checked too? Call out to parents: “Allow your children to grow and make mistakes.” What is the Mejor Contigo program about? We still have a lot of problems in this world, but the younger generation is going to help us bridge the gap and help us solve some of those problems. A lot of the innovative ideas Walmart has, come from Walmart employee associates. Why are diversity and inclusion so important to Walmart? Tony shares what Walmart is up to and their focus for the years ahead to better the lives of their staff. Tony Waller - Senior Director, Corporate Affairs Constituent Relations for Wal-Mart, tells his journey of trying to avoid the work that he was meant to do and how great advice from his mom + friends helped him accept himself and his life’s assignment. Insight from this episode: Rain shower, cloud, storm, it doesn’t matter Listen & Surrender and Go with the flow of the river Tony went to interview with Wal-Mart out of professional courtesy to a friend who was the recruiter. Tony initially turned down his executive job with Wal-Mart He knew the job was his calling because he wanted to avoid it and as he did so everything in his life went to shambles. He realized he was avoiding what god wanted him to do. “Are you flowing with the river?” is the question that Tony’s mom used to ask him after their conversations every Sunday. His mom called him out about doing research before passing judgment and how to notice the opportunity in the midst of distractions. “ You have to flow with the river because the river knows where it is going” - Barbara Jean Motley Waller, Tony’s Mom Tony sits on the board of the center for Asian - Pacific American Women. He is the only male and only non-Asian on the board. It was a re-connecting exercise that he did with the board that finally convinced him that the job with Wal-Mart was the right job for him. 14:55 - 15:03 The plan is good and the plan is perfect, what is going to happen is going to happen. What is meant to be is going to be. You don’t have any power to impeded what is to be. “We are given two things when we are born, we are given a name and were given an assignment that only we can accomplish in the greater good. That’s what makes us special is the assignment that was given to us.” - Tony Waller episode #79 15:42 - “Our greatness will be determined on how courageous we are to take on the assignment that was given to us.” - Tony Waller episode #79 It ain’t what they call you its what you answer to” - Barbara Jean Motley Waller 3 things that have helped Tony navigate and reach his level of success Living an authentic life (embracing all of who you are the good the bad the ugly) Understand that there is true power in vulnerability Do the best with what you have Be observant about what you do not see 19:31- 19:47 “If you decide to be truly authentic there will be times that your authenticity will reward you and there will be times that your authenticity will be a liability to you.” - Tony Waller episode #79 “I was never happy trying to be what everybody else wanted me to be” - Tony Waller episode #79 Tony’s favorite four words in the English vocabulary are “Thank you for noticing” because he is thankful that people notices and doesn’t give much to their opinions about him. Tony believes in a daily routine and having a gratitude journal 25:20 - 25:27 “It is when you become vulnerable and you truly share all of who you are and are brave enough to share all of who you are that you really see great power” - Tony Waller episode #79 Tony became confident with living authentically with all of who he is by accepting himself for who he was including his sexuality. He has a strong support group that helped him reach where he is now. He credits the scripture 2nd Corinthians 12 in the bible for giving him the words to be authentic. Tony’s advice on how to build your network Be the first to say hello Become comfortable with rejection Create friendships, connections and relationships with those that you ordinarily would not create a connection with. Sometimes people who think differently than you and whose views can be offensive to you. It presents an opportunity to learn. It doesn’t mean that you will be friends but can be enlightening. “One of the biggest lessons that I’ve learned is that you don’t know what you don’t know. Often you don’t know because you haven’t had that experience, You know what you know based on your experiences, your education, your trials, your tribulations, your ups your downs. That’s’ what creates what you know, but if you haven’t had certain experiences….” - Tony Waller episode #79 “I am who I am because of everyone else around me” - Tony Waller episode #79 Tony’s favorite quotes “Preach the gospel at all times and when necessary use words” - Saint Francis of Assisi “Each of us is a word spoken by god only once”- Unknown Tony's 3 keys to Create Your Best Life: You are meant to great never doubt that It ain’t what they call you it’s what you answer to Never forget that its not about you, its not about your plan its about your role in the great plan. Tony Waller - Senior Director, Corporate Affairs Constituent Relations for Walmart, details his journey of growing up in Puerto Rico to moving to Virginia and trailblazing his own path at University of Virginia and making his way to the executive suite. Insight from this episode: Tony’s mother would always say to him that you are meant to be great, but you are not the only one who is mean to be great. We are all meant to be great She would also say when you were born you were given two things your name and the assignment that was given to you on the day you were born. Tony stopped and listened to his life’s assignment because of the continuous life signs he received when people kept saying to him “You know you’re supposed to heal people” from the age of 11 to when he was 41. At 41 is when he decided to listen. Tony is leading Wal-Mart’s relief efforts in Houston to help people overcome the devastation of hurricane Harvey Tony grew up in Puerto Rico until he was 11 years old and then moved to a completely different world in Virginia. Tony dealt with not fitting in as a Afro - Latino growing up in Sothern Virginia at a time where everyone was considered either black or white. Going to counseling as a young boy changed his outlook and desire to fit in and it helped change and shape his life. He was encouraged to go to counseling by his parents. Tony learned his work ethic from his parents “I choose not to do it very often but if I have to do it I’m sure glad I know how to do it.” - Tony Waller episode #78 Tony created his own major at the University of Virginia because the pre- determined majors were to strict for him. He studied Interdisciplinary study in Latin -American Affairs with a concentration in Latin American Business which is now an official major at UVA. Will references an article you should read about how the Braves do business, more specifically how they treat their farm teams. http://www.bloomberg.com/features/2016-atlanta-braves-stadium/ To see the G-Day Game Video Scott was referencing, check it here: https://youtu.be/5GzUC7r_Tms - - - - - Tweet us: http://twitter.com/wslspodcast Will: http://twitter.com/williamfleitch Scott: http://twitter.com/jawavifilms Tony: http://twitter.com/tylerdawgden

Today is Friday, December 4th and earlier this morning, Coach Mark Richt was introduced as 24th Head Coach for the University of Miami football team. Because of this news, it is of course official that Coach Richt will not be on the sidelines for Georgia during their bowl game as he addressed the team yesterday afternoon and reportedly received a “warm send off”. Soon after, Director of Athletics Greg McGarity announced that coach Bryan McClendon will hold the interim head coach title for the Dawgs in whatever bowl destination they go to. One player who will not make the bowl trip is 3rd string QB Faton Bauta as he has decided to transfer. He has graduated and will be allowed to play one year at any FBS school of his choosing without having to sit out a year. So that will leave UGA with Lambert and Ramsey as the only scholarship QBs for the bowl. In the interview, Tony and Kyle discuss the bowl selection process as it pertains to the SEC and Talk about how the camping world Independence bowl will determine what teams meet for its game to be played on Dec 26th at 5:45 pm eastern time. You can find out more about the Camping World Independence bowl by visiting http://campingworldindependencebowl.com Let us know what you think fo the interview by tweeting us http://twitter.com/wslspodcast. Stay tuned for our next episode as the three of us will break down Championship Saturday as the final four teams for the college football playoff will be decided this weekend. We’ll also update you on any of the latest news as it pertains to Kirby Smart being the new head coach of Georgia, what it means for assistant coaches and also how it will impact recruiting. There’s a lot to cover so stay tuned. Thanks again to Tony and Kyle. “A wise and respected old football coach once said, I really believe God called on me to coach, and that is the reason I stayed in it for so long.” ————— ————— ————— 9-3. A respectable year for many college football coaches, was not enough for Coach mark Richt to keep his job at Georgia. As noted by many pundits, a win in this year’s bowl game would make it the 10th time in 15 seasons at UGA that Coach Richt would have posted double digit victories, which is an amazing statistic that might could only be duplicated by one current coach (and we all know who that is). But so it goes in this what have you done for me lately world of college football where a coach who is beloved by his players past and present, admired by fans of all ages and revered as one of the winningest coaches of this century is let go by the university he has given so much to because even though he has won at an astounding clip, the trophy cases of conference and championships have been bare for 10 years now and a coveted national championship has never materialized You are listening to Episode 031 of the Waitin’ Since Last Saturday podcast. Your co-hosts are Tony Waller, Will Leitch and Scott Duvall As Tony mentions in this episode, we Georgia fans have to be okay with the fact that our administration just fired a coach that won 74% of his games. It’s said that Mark Richt will coach the team in the bowl game to finish out the final game of his 15th season here at Georgia. Good luck Coach Richt, we wish you nothing but the best in your future endeavors and thank you for representing the University of Georgia in a manner that all of us fans can be proud of. ————— ————— ————— Before we get started, the quote at the beginning of this intro was made by Bobby Bowden of Florida State. And for what its worth, he did not win a national championship with the Seminoles until his 18th season. This is Episode 030 of the Waitin' Since Last Saturday podcast. Happy Thanksgiving to all of you and thank you so much for taking time out of your holiday plans to give our podcast a listen. Today Will Leitch, Tony Waller and Scott Duvall preview the 110th edition of Clean Old Fashioned Hate. Georgia leads the all-time series 64-40-5 After losing to Georgia Tech in Athens last season, UGA looks to start another long winning streak versus the Jackets and take back the Governor’s Cup this year. In this episode The three of us give our thoughts on what we think will happen in Saturday’s game and what the path to victory will be for the Dawgs versus a listless 3-8 Tech team who already had their T-Shirt moment of the season after their cute little win versus Florida State, which obviously didn’t do much to inspire the team because they haven’t won since. But, UGA has its own issues too and we continue our talk on the state of the Georgia football program after a frustrating win versus Georgia Southern last week. You are listening to Episode 028 of the Waitin' Since last Saturday podcast. Your co-hosts for today are Scott Duvall and Tony Waller. That’s it, for those of you who listen to us on a regular basis our other co-host Will Leitch is in New York City doing a bunch of national television shows for Bloomberg politics. Yeah, he’s kind of a big deal. But have no fear even though we are a man down this week, Tony and Scott have plenty to talk about. The dawgs have a pivotal non conference game versus the Georgia Southern Eagles of the SunBelt conference this week and they are a team that every Georgia fan should be a little nervous about playing. Why? Well, since their last visit to Sanford, They’ve play on the FBS level now, are 7-2 on the season, and lead the entire nation in rushing offense thanks to their dynamic triple option attack… That’s why we, the players and the coaches should have a healthy dose of respect for these Eagles from Statesboro. We break down the 6th ever meeting between GSU and UGA, Georgia’s won the previous 5 fairly comfortably. But We also dive into the legend that was the late Erk Russell. For those of you who do not know, Coach Russell served as Defensive coordinator on Vince Dooley’s coaching staff for many years and left in the early 80s to resurrect the Georgia Southern football program, where he went on to deliver 3 national championships for them. As always we will make our college football picks at the end of this show as well. Welcome to Episode 024 of the waiting since last saturday podcast. Your co-hosts are Will Leitch, Tony Waller and, Scott Duvall After the October swoon for Georgia where the Dawgs went 1 and 3 and were outscored by a combined score of 109 to 53 the feeling around Athens has certainly turned from a season of promise to one of despair as we enter into the final month of the season. Facing the likes of Kentucky, Auburn, Georgia Southern and Georgia Tech in the next four weeks will certainly determine the fate of the bowl situation for Georgia and the performances on and off the field could certainly influence what happens to the current coaching staff as we know it. The three of us try our best to interpret the current state of the UGA football program and preview this Saturday’s game versus Kentucky. Have a great week. We’ll see you on campus. Episode 023 is here as Will Leitch, Tony Waller and Scott Duvall discuss the debacle that was Georgia Florida 2015. Frustration and confusion abound as Tony and Scott talk about the head scratching game plan that the Dawgs incorporated, questioning everything from the offensive play calling to the ineptitude of Georgia’s special teams, again. Will has been on location covering the World Series and is patched in live from the Citi Field press box in New York before Game 5. Thank goodness the Royals won because that means the three of us will all be back together in person in beautiful Athens Georgia for the next show. But for this episode, Will was able to report on the unique experience he had of watching the first half of the game from the Georgia fan bar, American Whiskey and poses an interesting question from a more national perspective, “Is Georgia as good as the fans think it is?” - - - - - - - - - - Producing this podcast is not easy, especially on days like today. Dateline: Jacksonville, Florida Reports are surfacing from Georgia beat writers and other local and national publications that Coach Mark Richt is considering inserting Redshirt Junior and 3rd String Quarterback Faton Bauta as the starter for the Bulldogs on Saturday. Will he indeed start? Will he see significant playing time? Or, is this just a ploy from Coach Richt and the Georgia coaching staff to throw off Jim McElwain and the Gators? This is episode 021 of the Waitin’ Since Last Saturday Podcast, the Georgia Florida preview show. Special thanks goes out to Jack and Walker for their spot on reenactment of one of Larry Munson’s most iconic calls of all time. Great job boys. It was almost 35 years ago. November 8th 1980, Georgia quarterback Buck Belue called the play L-76 in the huddle. With help from a key block by lineman Nate Hudson, he connected on an 18 yard curl rout to wide receiver Lindsay Scott over the middle of the field. Scott made the catch and raced 93 yards for the touchdown, Georgia beat Florida 26-21. It was a key victory for Dooley’s Dawgs, which helped catapult the UGA to the1980 National Championship. So, once again, it’s Georgia Florida week and first place in the SEC East is waiting for the winner of this game. Might Georgia still be on pace for a special season? Only time will tell. Listen up as Will Leitch, Tony Waller and Scott Duvall preview the 3:30 CBS game of the week, which takes place this year on Halloween. If you would like to reach out to us on Twitter our show’s handle is http://twitter.com/wslspodcast. Thanks to all of our listeners and Twitter followers for your constant interaction. If you are a die Hard Georgia Bulldog football fan, this podcast episode is for you. Typically on Thursdays, Will Leitch, Scott Duvall & Tony Waller join in previewing the upcoming game that Georgia will be playing. This week, however, the Dawgs are on a bye week. Not even considering taking a week off ourselves, Will decided to have Tony and Scott (two lifelong Georgia fans) rank in order of least objectionable to most objectionable SEC teams, fan bases etcetera. Basically counting it down from 13 to 1 in which schools we actually kind of like to the ones where and 0-8 record in the SEC and finishing with a miserable overall record still wouldn’t be enough to satisfy us. In this episode, Tony will share many stories similar to the one you hear at the start of this episode about the time a DJ tried to play Rocky Top at his wedding to an instance where he literally had Smokey, the Volunteer’s blue tick hound mascot by the collar and was leading him, well, I’ll let him tell the story. We also welcome in a special guest later on the program and she will reveal Scott's #1 most objectionable team in the SEC. Why? Well, she grew up with this school near her backyard across the border in another state and developed her dislike for their color scheme at an early age. This bonus episode is the WSLSpodcast Pickem contest for week 8 of the college football season. Co-Hosts: Will Leitch: http://twitter.com/williamfleitch Tony Waller: http://twitter.com/tylerdawgden Scott Duvall: http://twitter.com/jawavifilms Picks: http://funofficepools.com Georgia has a bye this week and last night, the three of us (myself, Tony Waller and Will Leitch) recorded an episode where Will had Tony and me list out the 13 SEC teams in order from 1 to 13 that we as Georgia fans hate to lose to. The reasons we gave ranged anywhere from team colors to objectionable fan bases to even whether or not we even believed they should be members of the SEC in the first place (Texas A&M). Needless to say, it’s an in depth discussion with a lot of fun and frivolity took place…and it ran pretty long. And upon completion of that episode, we quickly realized we had to run through our weekly pick segment. Tony, who runs the picks every week decided to place three Thursday night games on the board, so as a service to you, the listeners, we are releasing our pick segment as a completely separate episode, which you will hear right now. Stay tuned until the end where I’ll mention the pertinent website links on how you can enter and I’ll give a quick update to the leaderboard going into college football’s week 8.
Today on the podcast, Will Leitch, Tony Waller and Scott Duvall discuss Georgia's 9-6 victory over the Tigers as Marshall Morgan hit a 3 run homer in the bottom of the 9th to give the Dawgs the victory. Was it great defense or just bad offense?, Take your pick. But after two deflating loses for Georgia, a win, no matter how it happened was a good thing as the annual Cocktail party down in Jacksonville versus the Gators looms large. In this week’s episode, Tony, Will and Scott try to come to grips with the Dawgs 4-2 record, the loss of Nick Chubb and the struggles of our special teams and Defense as Georgia gets ready to host SEC East foe Missouri as they make their way into Sanford Stadium for a 7:30 kick this Saturday. If you like variety in your sports podcasts, well, you’re in the right place, naturally, we spend the majority of the time discussing the current state of UGA football, but later in the show, Will, who has been covering the presidential debates for Bloomberg Politics gives us his take on the recent Democratic Debate and as well as his predictions on who he thinks will receive the nomination for both parties for next year’s national election. Towards the end of the show the three of us as always make our picks on some other regional and national games of the week. We all make mistakes. Which leads me to my next point. “The Best laid plans of mice and men often go awry.” a quote from Scottish poet Robert Burns in his poem, “To A Mouse”. To A Mouse and is an idiomatic proverbial expression used to signify the futility of making detailed plans when the ability to fully or even partially execute them is uncertain. There’s your English literature lesson for the day. Similar to Will’s plan to call Tony for this podcast recording, he got Josh instead, similar to my plan of recording this introduction in my studio, but because of technical difficulties, I’m had to use my iPhone instead and similar to Georgia running out to a 21 point lead versus Tennessee, adding to it and cruising to an easy victory, the Dawgs ended up falling short after a furious Volunteer comeback. Our thoughts and prayers here at the WSLS podcast go out to Nick Chubb and his family for a fast and full recovery from the injury he sustained on Saturday. Keep your head up Nick. Thank you to all who have left ratings and reviews of this podcast on iTunes. We greatly appreciate it. We at the WSLS podcast have burned the game tape from “that game played last Saturday in the rain”. In this episode, we quickly touch on “that game played last Saturday in the rain” - instead focusing on what’s ahead as the Georgia Bulldogs make the trip up to Rocky Top, Tennessee. Will Georgia be able to extend its win streak to 6 in a row over the disappointing, but still very dangerous Tennessee Volunteers? Tony, Will and Scott break down the game at length, make predictions on the game (Spoiler Alert: We all pick Georgia), and take a look around the country at some other big games of interest. Will Leitch, Scott Duvall and Tony Waller touch on the obvious shortcomings that Georgia experienced against Bama as we discuss which one of the 5 stages of grief each of us are currently experiencing. The good news as Tony notes towards the end of this episode is that technically, Georgia still has every preseason goal still intact as the trip up to Knoxville grows closer by the day. And after you finish this episode, I would encourage you to read the article titled, “Georgia Fans: When it rains, it pours.” Link: http://www.sportsonearth.com/article/153156790/georgia-bulldogs-lose-to-alabama Will perfectly sums up the plight that we as fans feel so often when seemingly year after year our football team stumbles and does it in spectacular fashion. Co-Hosts: Will Leitch, Scott Duvall & Tony Waller
**Correction: Scott misspoke referring to the "#8 Crimson Tide" in his intro, obviously he was testing you and he received enough texts and tweets to declare that, You the listeners, passed the test.** You’ve had it marked on your calendars for quite some time, it’s finally here, the 13th ranked Crimson Tide of Alabama rolls into Sanford Stadium this Saturday afternoon for a 3:30 kickoff on CBS. We break down the matchup, state our hopes and dreams for the outcome of this game and discuss what a win for Georgia might mean as the season progresses, but just as we begin to settle in on a good feeling about the Dawgs chances of taking down Saban and company on Saturday, one of us picks the Tide to beat Georgia. Which one of us is it? Stay tuned to find out. Does Clemson stand a chance against Notre Dame in Death Valley as the Irish make their first trip to Clemson since 1977 when Joe Montana was taking snaps under center. Two of the most disappointed fan bases in college football square off in Knoxville as embattled coaches face off as Arkansas limps into Tennessee. There is one more key West vs East SEC matchup happening in Gainesville as Ole Miss and their vaunted Land Shark defense seek to stay undefeated against the surprisingly undefeated Gators. In this episode, you’ll hear Scott, Tony and Will begin the show talking about the republican debate from California, which Will Leitch was covering for Bloomberg Politics. After a few minutes of political talk, Tony and Will get into the breakdown of the state of UGA football and what the Dawgs will need to do in order to emerge victorious over Steve Spurrier’s Gamecocks. The three of us also take a trip around the country and make our picks of some of the regional and national games of the week. Does Ole Miss have a chance against Alabama?
