Welcome to the The Confab, the term derives from "confidential talk", which was commonly used in the Prohibition Era for meetings and conversations that took place in the smoky, rule-breaking speakeasies of that time. The informal, privacy focused and clandestine nature of Ungovernable Misfits lends itself to these discussions. So, grab a seat and a stiff drink from the concealed bar, listen and revel in the conversation.TUNE IN TO THE SATELLITE SPOTLIGHT MAY 10TH!!Satellite Spotlight: Sprouting Symphonieshttps://zososcorner.substack.com/p/let-the-sun-and-light-comes-streaminghttps://www.thesplitkit.com/live/1e34e11b-f536-4280-b068-7dd1a9399b12/videoBehind The SchemesOur WebsiteFollow us on the Fediverse! We're celebrating our 10th anniversary all year by digging in the vaults to re-present classic episodes with fresh commentary. What better way to kick things off than where it all began? Here's a look back at episode one and our conversation with Jim Peterik. ABOUT JIM PETERIKSinger, songwriter, guitarist, and keyboardist Jim Peterik is best known as a founding member of the band Survivor and the co-writer of their Grammy-winning double platinum #1 hit single, “Eye of the Tiger.” But that's only the tip of the iceberg. Thirty-five of Jim's songs have appeared on the Billboard Pop chart, including seven Top 10 singles. His first major success came when his original band, Ides of March, took the Peterik-penned “Vehicle” to the #2 position on the Pop chart in 1970, spawning cover versions by Chet Baker and Shirley Bassey. After a stint as a solo artist with Epic Records, Jim formed Survivor in 1979, penning a string of hits for the band, including “I Can't Hold Back,” “High On You,” “The Search is Over,” “Burning Heart,” and “Is This Love.” While still writing hits for his own group, Jim forged a successful partnership with the members of 38 Special, co-writing classic songs, including “Rockin' Into the Night,” “Hold On Loosely,” and “Caught Up In You.” Widely respected as a top-notch collaborator, Jim has co-written successful songs with a number of artists, including the Beach Boys, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Sammy Hagar, Cheap Trick, the Doobie Brothers, REO Speedwagon, and Mindi Abair. The long list of those who have covered his compositions includes Paul Anka, Gloria Gaynor, Tony Orlando, Reba McEntire, Larry Gatlin, Blackhawk, and The Outlaws. He is the co-author, with Dave Austin, of Songwriting for Dummies.
Doug is honored to have a once-in-a-lifetime interview with grammy award winning writer and artist Jim Peterik, founder of the band Survivor. You may not recognize his name, but you will recognize his voice and music. Jim wrote and performed songs like: Eye of the Tiger (from Rocky 3), Burning Heart (Rocky 4), The Search Is Over, High On You, and I Can't Hold Back. Jim also co-wrote 38 Special's platinum hits “Hold On Loosely”, “Caught Up In You”, “Wild-Eyed Southern Boys”, “Fantasy Girl”, and “Rockin' Into The Night”. Revelation 3:7-127 “And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write: ‘The words of the holy one, the true one, who has the key of David, who opens and no one will shut, who shuts and no one opens.8 “‘I know your works. Behold, I have set before you an open door, which no one is able to shut. I know that you have but little power, and yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name. 9 Behold, I will make those of the synagogue of Satan who say that they are Jews and are not, but lie—behold, I will make them come and bow down before your feet, and they will learn that I have loved you. 10 Because you have kept my word about patient endurance, I will keep you from the hour of trial that is coming on the whole world, to try those who dwell on the earth. 11 I am coming soon. Hold fast what you have, so that no one may seize your crown. 12 The one who conquers, I will make him a pillar in the temple of my God. Never shall he go out of it, and I will write on him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which comes down from my God out of heaven, and my own new name. 13 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.'

In the annals of 80s Southern rock, one band sort of reigned a bit supreme for like two years -- but those were GLORIOUS TIMES. That band is .38 Special. Beave finally gets his wish and the guys explore the life and career of the guys who brought you "Caught Up In You", "Hold On Loosely", "Second Chance", and, well there are others too. You'll never think about .38 Special the same way again. Find out how they got started, why they changed their band name from Sweet Rooster to .38 Special, and learn about other songs in Billboard's Top 10 during their all-too brief stay at the top. Tune in for education!

We typically hold on to people and other meaningful things tightly because we love them, and we want everything to be okay. But for all things to flourish, we often must give them space and freedom. Listen to this podcast to learn how to, as 38 Special sings, "hold on loosely, but don't let go" and remember, "[i]f you cling too tightly, you're gonna lose control."

We've covered a number of underrated bands and albums, but perhaps the most underrated band of the 80's is 38 Special. Formed in Jacksonville, Florida in 1974 by Donnie Van Zandt and Don Barnes, 38 Special had a string of hits in the late 70's through the 80's including "Hold On Loosely," "Rockin' Into the Night," and "If I'd Been the One." Special Forces is their fifth and most successful studio album, hitting number 10 on the Billboard 200.In addition to Van Zandt and Barnes, 38 Special's lineup for this album included Jeff Carlisi on guitar, Larry Junstrom on bass, Steve Brookins on drums, and Jack Grondin on drums. A number of songs on this album were co-written by Jim Peterik, singer-songwriter and founder of the group Survivor. Given the connection to Lynyrd Skynyrd (Donnie was the brother of original Skynyrd lead singer, Ronnie Van Zandt, and Junstrom was one of the founding members of Lynyrd Skynyrd), it is not surprising that their sound has its roots in Southern Rock. However, 38 Special tended towards a more mainstream hard rock sound. The name of the group comes from an incident where the police were called on the band during a late night practice session. The door was padlocked, and the police broke the lock by shooting it out ... with a 38 Special. Caught Up In YouThis is the first single and the big hit from the album, reaching number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 1 on the Mainstream Rock charts. Don Barnes sings lead on this track. The lyrics are self-explanatory, extolling a girl with whom the singer is completely entranced. You Keep Runnin' AwayBarnes has the lead duties from this song again. The lyrics describe a girl who has been burned in past relationships and has decided never to trust another man. The singer encourages her to not give up, that "someday, someway, somewhere love is gonna find you."Back Door Stranger A deeper cut from the album, the lyrics describe a serial rapist sneaking around, and what will happen to him if the singer catches up with him. "Take my chances, rather go to jail than see the eyes of a coward runnin' loose and well." The guitar has a great wah-wah sound, and Donnie Van Zandt takes his turn on lead vocals for this track.Chain Lightnin' The thunder sound is striking as both the intro and the outro for this iconic song. There's a little bit of a Pink Floyd echo to add to the mystery. "And it's hotter than hell in the heavens tonight." "And it's so tough when the satisfaction is greater than the risk."ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Ain't Got No Home by Clarence “Frogman” Henry (from the motion picture “Diner”)This novelty song was featured in the comedy-drama starring Steve Guttenberg and Kevin Bacon. STAFF PICKS:Big Bad Bill (Is Sweet William Now) by Van Halen Bruce begins the staff picks with a deeper cut off the Diver Down album. This cover was originally recorded in 1924, and came to the band's attention when David Lee Roth recorded it off a late night AM radio station. Jan Van Halen, Eddie and Alex's father, is featured in this song playing clarinet.Did It in a Minute by Hall & Oates Brian features a hit off the "Private Eyes" album from duo Darryl Hall and John Oates. It was the third single from the album. The upbeat song is about finding love almost instantaneously. Hall wrote this with his girlfriend Sara Allen and her sister Janna, who came up with the chorus.Find Another Fool by QuarterflashWayne gets a second chance to feature Portland's own Quarterflash. This rocking minor-key song peaked at number 16 on the charts, and is a break-up song after the girl has had it with her ex-boyfriend's cheating ways. Playing and deconstructing several of his hit songs for you, JIM PETERIK — who you might know from such radio smashes as Survivor's “Eye of the Tiger,” 38 Special's “Hold On Loosely,” and Ides of March's “Vehicle” (a number one song Peterik wrote when he was just 18) — is on the show! He's one of rock's most successful songwriters. Today, we're “flyin' the ‘copter” over to Peterik's Chicago-area recording studio to play guitars with the legendary rocker and find out how he used his immense talents as a tunesmith to forge a spectacularly successful career. ALSO: On the show with Jim is Ides of March founding member LARRY MILLAS. This episode is presented by TASCAM and the new TASCAM MIXCAST 4 podcast workstation. No Guitar Is Safe is hosted and created by Jude Gold.
In Episode 116, Billy Donnelly talks about one of his biggest fears for his kids - them being like him. As a result, he discusses the ways he's tried to influence them to steer them in a different direction, one that doesn't have them making his same mistakes growing up or finding similar regrets, and the expectations for them that have resulted. However, he has come to the realization that he cannot assert control over all these things, and it most likely hasn't served him nor his children well. He discusses his need to hold on more loosely, yet still providing them with the best information, knowledge and advice possible, for them to make good choices and turn into whoever they wind up becoming, regardless of if that's like him or not.
Today's guest is Colin Peterik. If that name sounds familiar, you know your stuff. Colin is the son of Jim Peterik, who wrote some of the biggest hits of the 70's & 80's with Vehicle by Ides Of March Eye Of The Tiger by Survivor, & Hold On Loosely by .38 Special. Colin talks about growing up in the industry. He remembers being woken up at 6am by his dad working out some of these hits on the piano. Colin's influences are wide-ranging. There's the obvious link to his dad, but he was equally influenced by prog rock, Steely Dan, & skateboarding. He's even the singer & keyboardist for a Steely Dan tribute band called Brooklyn Charmers. His first solo album is coming out. It's called Everything and Nothing and it is a fun listen. There is such a wide variety of styles. Colin discusses his studio process and if there might be a father/son duet in the future. Grammy® Award Winning songwriter Jim Peterik is excited to create more music at 71. Donning his fabulous purple hair, the iconic musician graces the show and gives us a wealth of wise words, laughs and inspiration on why we should trust our instinct and pursue what we love. For Jim, his passion for words and music continues to touch many lives. Tune in to Someone Gets Me — How To Live Your Dream With Jim Peterik. ▶️ Key points covered in this episode: ✔️So many incredible musicians as guests on the show have long careers and experienced the magic of living that dream. Jim Peterik is one of those people who has found that magic in a career that started back in the 60s, and he's still going strong with amazing, great music, a living legend. He has written a book, still plays the guitar and keyboards, composes music and does lots of things in the creative space. ✔️Jim recalls nearly dismissing what he thought was a prank call on the answering machine in 1981. A guy sounding like Sylvester Stallone left him a message. Jim's wife prodded him to return the call and found out it was certainly not a joke. To this day, "Eye of the Tiger", the theme from the film Rocky III remains an unforgettable song that inspires people of all ages. ✔️ Collaboration is the secret to making wonderful music, according to Jim. The beauty of going into the heart and creating with fellow talented artists has made his life's work fun and rewarding. ✔️To succeed in life, don't be afraid to suck. This is excellent advice from Jim as the musical great. His journey as the founder of rock band Survivor and creating his list of hit songs resulted from a series of trying and failing in his craft and passion. "Don't think every bit of lyrics and melody is going to be good. Sometimes you can suck for the long term before suddenly something rises from the ashes, and you don't suck anymore. It's like trying to find the diamonds, yet people stop themselves because they're not brilliant right away. Brilliant comes to you gradually." ✔️ Legacy and inspiration. Jim continues to receive stacks of fan mail and elaborate packages of Rocky albums to sign. They all have a note of how much his music meant to them, even some from 12 to 14 year-olds. "It's a great experience to hear the effect you can have through music and your lyrics. And I always try to put a little bit of meaning and give a little wisdom with the fun." Jim Peterik is an American musician, singer and songwriter. He is best known as the founder of the band Survivor, as vocalist and songwriter of "Vehicle" by the Ides of March, and as co-writer of the anthem "Eye of the Tiger", the theme from the 1982 film Rocky III. Peterik has co-written songs for 38 Special ("Rockin' into the Night", "Hold On Loosely"), Lynyrd Skynyrd, Blackhawk, Cheap Trick, Sammy Hagar ("Heavy Metal"), Cathy Richardson, Dennis DeYoung, Van Zant, Brian Wilson, REO Speedwagon, and The Beach Boys. He is currently fronting the melodic rock band Pride of Lions, an entire album of women of Rock and Roll called Tigress and smooth-jazz project Jim Peterik's Lifeforce, and has a regular series of yearly concert performances with an all-star cast as World Stage. He is also active as a producer and mentor to young, developing talent. For episode 8: hold on loosely, Victoria both pays tribute to the 1981 classic song by 38 special with the same name and talks about how control and kindness intersect. The episode begins with some light housekeeping. Blog updates include a new series called Simple Acts of Kindness! Victoria then discusses her plans for the Marigold Market vendor interviews. Launching alongside this episode is the first interview from that series with Diejhon Yearby aka Cozy of Cozy Bear Market Garden and Cozy Bear Farms podcast. Victoria can't stop talking about her red manual typewriter either! For the metaphorically segment, Victoria talks about what she means by control, synonyms for it and how control can sometimes be a kindness, idealistically. For the question of the week, Victoria shares feedback from several market attendees including Max & Laura, podcast superfans! Victoria then offers a special report on the naming of the firefly trail. The full story may surprise you! Then for market conversations, Victoria offers several quality conversations including one from repeat guest, Becky. Willing to lend a hand Wednesday and Thoughtful Thursday are discussed in the episode with the promise of the rest saved for the next. For this week's kindness in practice, I interviewed incoming community forester, Lea Clark of Winterville. I met Lea at the Marigold Market one recent Saturday and was so excited to sit down and talk trees with her! As of September 1st, Lea will be full time at the Georgia Forestry Commission as the Community Forester for Northeast Georgia. According to the Georgia Forestry Commission website, “Community Foresters provide technical assistance to cities, counties, elementary schools, college campuses, homeowners and nonprofit organizations through the Sustainable Community Forestry Program (SCFP).” This is the culmination of years of hard work on Lea's part. She has been working on the county's tree inventory since Feb 2020, and last year for the Ga Forestry Commission she performed regional-level approvals for the Tree City USA and Tree Campus USA programs. Lea also chairs the Winterville Tree Commission, is on the Athens Tree Council, the Board of Directors for the Ga Tree Council, and for the Lyndon House Arts Foundation; all voluntary positions. Lea's enthusiasm for trees and life is at the forefront of everything she does! A sermon on Luke 4:14-30 preached on January 17, 2021, by the Rev. Ellen Crawford True for online worship with Christ Presbyterian Church in Camp Hill, PA.
A paradox is a statement that while seeming self-contradictory, actually describes reality. The Christian life is full of paradoxes. God is one and three. God is absolutely sovereign and our choices actually matter. One paradox is that Christians are called to live in, attend to, and love the present form the world (Jer 29:4–4). Yet Chrsitians are also told not to love the world because the present form of the world is passing away (2 Cor 5:17). So which is it? Are we meant to settle down in the world or to remain detached from the world? This week we consider how to live in this tension in light of Jesus' coming.

There is an undeniable truth that the most successful fundraising organizations have always followed - it's easier and cheaper to keep current donors than it is to get new ones. This age-old idea of donor retention is built on a simple principle: acquiring new donors is expensive and difficult. Today, we especially need to retain our donors. No one could have predicted the unprecedented impact COVID-19 has had, not only on how nonprofits fundraise but on our everyday lives. This is a precarious time. We need to listen to our best donors and prospective donors, and image ourselves in their situation. We need to hold on loosely, but don't let go to our donors.

Jeff Carlisi, founding member and lead guitarist and song writer for the band 38 Special, rocks on in to Madame Perry's Salon tonight to talk music, his book, Camp Jam and talk to listeners. Between 1981 and 1984, 38 Special had three million-selling albums — "Wild-Eyed Southern Boys," "Special Forces" and "Tour de Force." Add to that several songs that received near-constant play on rock radio — "Rockin' Into the Night," "Hold On Loosely," "Caught Up in You," "If I'd Been the One." The last two hit No. 1 on Billboard's Album Rock chart. As you probably know Carlisi is still working as hard as ever and we'll get caught up on his 2020 schedule tonight!

Music legend Jim Peterik (Ides of March, Survivor, countless songwriting credits throughout the past 50 years) joins me for a fantastic meal provided by Revolution Brewpub (2323 N Milwaukee Ave, Chicago, IL 60647). When I realized the iconic Jim Peterik would be in my car, I wanted to be sure we ate at an iconic Chicago location. From their iconic beers to the brewpub, Revolution is the best. We covered A TON in this episode, and Jim had his guitar at the ready throughout. Some highlights: The Ides of March are celebrating their 55th (!!) year with a new album ("Play On"). How on earth are the guys in Ides of March still friends? The first Ides of March rehearsal happened while the Beatles were on Ed Sullivan. I blew Jim's mind by bringing a vinyl copy of Survivor's "Premonition" album along for the recording. The life-changing phone call Jim got from Sylvester Stallone. The evergreen quality of "Eye of the Tiger." What went into the writing of "Eye of the Tiger." Hulk Hogan using "Eye of the Tiger" as his entrance music. If I worked out, I'd listen to "Eye of the Tiger" all the time. Survivor's "Summer Nights" was my gateway drug to Survivor. Jim plays "Vehicle" in my vehicle! SCORE! Great God in heaven, you know I love Jim Peterik. Could "Vehicle" have been a hit in the "Me Too" era? Why didn't Jim ever leave Chicago for warmer climes? Jim plays the new Ides of March song "Blue Storm Rising!" Writing "Heavy Metal" with Sammy Hagar. The hits Jim wrote for .38 Special. Who doesn't sing along loudly to "Hold On Loosely? Jim opened up for Zeppelin! The state of rock in 2019. Did the guys in Ides of March resent Jim for Survivor's success? Car Con Carne is presented by the Autobarn Mazda of Evanston

Singer, songwriter, guitarist, and keyboardist Jim Peterik is best known as a founding member of the band Survivor and the co-writer of their Grammy-winning double platinum #1 hit single, “Eye of the Tiger.” But that’s only the tip of the iceberg. Thirty-five of Jim’s songs have appeared on the BillboardPop chart, including seven Top 10 singles. His first major success came when his original band, Ides of March, took the Peterik-penned “Vehicle” to the #2 position on the Pop chart in 1970, spawning cover versions by Chet Baker and Shirley Bassey. After a stint as a solo artist with Epic Records, Jim formed Survivor in 1979, penning a string of hits for the band, including “I Can’t Hold Back,” “High On You,” “The Search is Over,” “Burning Heart,” and “Is This Love.” While still writing hits for his own group, Jim forged a successful partnership with the members of 38 Special, co-writing classic songs, including “Rockin’ Into the Night,” “Hold On Loosely,” and “Caught Up In You.” Widely respected as a top-notch collaborator, Jim has co-written successful songs with a number of artists, including the Beach Boys, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Sammy Hagar, Cheap Trick, the Doobie Brothers, REO Speedwagon, and Mindi Abair. The long list of those who have covered his compositions includes Paul Anka, Gloria Gaynor, Tony Orlando, Reba McEntire, Larry Gatlin, Blackhawk, and The Outlaws. He is the co-author, with Dave Austin, of Songwriting for Dummies.
As the founding member of Survivor and co-writer of one of the most inspirational songs in rock history, Jim Peterik easily fits into the category of ‘rock star.’ But a closer look at Peterik’s life and career reveal that he is anything but your typical rock star. Forgoing a life of meaningless sex and drugs, Peterik married his high school sweetheart and focused on the music, becoming one of the most prolific songwriters of his generation. Here, for the first time, Peterik shares the stories behind his iconic songs?from touring with Led Zeppelin and Janis Joplin on the heels of the Ides of March number one classic ‘Vehicle’ to his Grammy-winning, triple platinum ‘Eye of the Tiger’ with Survivor and beyond. He explores the often torturous power struggles within the band contrasted by the giddy highs that accompany a trail of worldwide hits. Peterik has also co-written songs with some of the most famous bands and artists in rock-and-roll, including 38 Special (Rockin’ Into the Night, Caught Up In You, Hold On Loosely), Sammy Hagar (Heavy Metal), Brian Wilson, The Doobie Brothers, REO Speedwagon, Cheap Trick, the platinum comeback of The Beach Boys (That’s Why God Made the Radio), and many more. Through the Eye of the Tiger is more than just a memoir of a songwriting legend; it’s a classic rock-and-roll story, told through the eyes of someone who has lived through it all- and through the Eye Of The Tiger. http://jimpeterik.com
