The thylacine was the largest land predator throughout mainland of Australia. But as humans migrated and brought dingoes, the Thylacine struggled to compete for food and almost disappeared around 2000 years ago. A group of US and Australian scientists have banded together to bring the Thylacine back from extinction. The first step will be to structure its genome. As a result of our success as a species, we have been ushering other species toward extinction for thousands of years. The pace of those extinctions increased markedly with the growth of the world's population since the Industrial Revolution. But we are now within reach of the “Jurassic Park” -type fantasy of being able to reverse extinctions - to bring back species from the dead. On the other hand, assuming we get beyond the remaining technological obstacles, de-extinction is still a very complex topic with conservation and ecological considerations that are not necessarily being considered by those who are most likely to make it happen.Virginia Matzek is a restoration ecologist and professor at Santa Clara University, who navigates us through this convoluted subject. The first part of the discussion is an explanation of how de-extinction “works”. After that, we get into the various arguments “for” and “against”. Virginia is remarkably even-handed in her treatment of both sides of the argument, and some of her reasons are not  what one might expect.Links to resourcesThe Species That Went Extinct Twice - Forbes article describing the story of the short-lived return of the Pyrenean ibex.Revive & Restore - Website of the organization promoting the incorporation of biotechnologies into standard conservation practice.Colossal Laboratories & Biosciences - The outfit working on de-extincting the wooly mammoth and thylacine.Into the wild: playing God with resurrection biology - A written Santa Clara interview with Virginia.Visit www.case4conservation.com

After an enthralling second edition of the Tour de France Femmes finishes with Demi Vollering's overall victory in Pau, these are RadioCycling's headlines...Bigger and better than in 2022, with a stronger, deeper and more competitive field, the Tour de France Femmes built towards a dramatic climax in the Pyrenean mist that will stay in the memory. We get a rider's perspective on the race from French star Audrey Cordon-Ragot.One of the dominant stories of the Tour de France Femmes was the crackdown by the UCI jury of commissaires on riders drafting behind cars when rejoining the peloton after a crash or a mechanical. Race winner Demi Vollering was penalised for doing it, while her Team SD Worx DS Danny Stam was kicked off the race for facilitating this. We examine the historical context for this hardline approach, hear from Stam and a fellow DS, Uno-X's Huub Duijn, who was also penalised, and from AG Insurance Soudal Quick-Step team leader Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio, who tells us the rules should be strictly and consistently imposed at all races.Remco Evenepoel's reign as world champion ended with him winning last weekend's Clásica San Sebastián, but the saga of his rumoured transfer away from Soudal-QuickStep rumbles on. Chris Marshall-Bell, who's so well informed on this story that even S-QS boss Patrick Lefevere asks him for the latest developments, provides an update on the those developments. As had been the case at the Tour de France, the issue of motorbikes and rider safety was highlighted on a number of occasions during the Tour de France Femmes. Adam Hansen, president of the riders' association (CPA), details the ways that things could be improved and explains his own invention of a laser-based system that could ensure that motorbikes don't hamper or interfere with racers.  And finally, in Ground Beans...– the latest on the transfer tug-of-war over Carlos Rodríguez– Caleb Ewan and Lotto-Dstny reach agreement on sprinter's future– Irish sprinter Sam Bennett set to move?Support the show

As the Tour de France leaves the Pyrenees, these are RadioCycling's news headlines...It's been frantic, the tactics have been crazy at times, but it's also been totally captivating. We look back on two days in the Pyrenees when Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogačar tried to knock lumps out of each other and in doing so served up racing action that was every bit as enthralling as last year's epic mountain duel between the pair, the sport's two outstanding climbers.   While the dynamic duo have fought their own private battle, the Ineos Grenadiers have found themselves on the fringes of the GC battle. We speak to the British squad's sporting director Steve Cummings, who admits that the sport's most lavishly funded team is in transition and that they will have to reset their goals at the Tour because  they've already slipped out of the contest for the yellow jersey. Friday will bring the sprinters back to centre of the action, with a stage into Bordeaux, a city long associated with the greatest sprint names in cycling's history.  We hear from the Alpecin-Deceuninck team, who've shown in the two previous bunch sprints that they're a step ahead of their rivals, well-drilled in support of Jasper Philipsen, who's finishing speed is currently peerless. We also hear from Fabio Jakobsen, who's still nursing injuries sustained Tuesday's sprint crash but has fought through the mountains with the aim of redeeming a hitherto difficult Tour with a stage win.We then turn away from the Tour to examine the magnificent road race routes that have been announced for the 2024 Paris Olympics. As well as breezing by the chateau at Versailles, the men's and women's courses will feature a narrow, cobbled climb through Montmartre to the Basilica of Sacré Coeur,  passing, Jeremy points out, one of the city's most notorious bars and a renowned butcher's shop. We have all of the key details.PLUS, in our Ground Beans round-up of news snippets and rumours, we reveal the yellow jersey wearer who "looks a banana" and the Instagram post Fabio Jakobsen was persuaded to change...   Support the show

The 5 April 2013 journal Science reported that the first liveproduct of de-extinction, a Pyrenean ibex, lasted only a few minutes before extincting again. The ibex, which was produced by a process similar to that used for Dolly, the infamous clonedsheep, was driven to extinction in the first place with the help of humans. Some scientists thinkit only fitting that humans play a part in the de-extinction of those species that we helped toextinct in the first place. An environmental argument for de-extinction arises from the case of the wooly mammoth, aspecies whose de-extinction would likely have beneficial consequences, such as the restorationof a more diverse ecology in the Arctic. Unfortunately for dinosaur enthusiasts, species ofdinosaurs are not contenders for de-extinction at the moment, as the processes for de-extinctionthat are currently available require “fresher” DNA. And some notable environmental scientistsare concerned about the unforeseen effects of reintroducing a de-extincted species into anenvironment, much like the unforeseen effects of introducing non-native species of plants oranimals into novel environments. One might also wonder whether de-extincted creatures fallunder endangered species laws and whether it is appropriate to use the term ‘extinct' for speciesfrom this time forward, given that de-extinction is an imminent possibility.

Hello and welcome to little decisions interviews! I have something very special for you today! I met Sandy Bird one bright and beautiful morning recently  at Lucky Dog Agility, a dog sports training facility off Arnoldsville Rd in Winterville, Ga! She was accompanied by her training dog and companion, Asta. Asta is a Pyrenean sheepdog. She looks like a typical sheepdog: grey, long haired with short but not stubby legs. I basically walked right in and immediately began asking questions of Sandra(and petting Asta of course)! Wikipedia divides dog sports into the following sports groups: QUOTE “herding, obedience, protection, pulling, racing, tracking & hunting, or water sports.”END QUOTE Dog sports are a way to build confidence in both handler and dog, as well as team work and communication. Agility is a niche sport all on it's own, it's a speed sport. So what is agility exactly?  According to Wikipedia, quote“Dog agility is a dog sport in which a handler directs a dog through an obstacle course in a race for both time and accuracy. Dogs run off leash with no food or toys as incentives, and the handler can touch neither dog nor obstacles. The handler's controls are limited to voice, movement, and various body signals, requiring exceptional training of the animal and coordination of the handler.” end quote And what about the course the dog runs for agility? Continuing from Wikipedia, quote “An agility course consists of a set of standard obstacles laid out by a judge in a design of his or her own choosing in an area of a specified size. The surface may be of grass, dirt, rubber, or special matting. Depending on the type of competition, the obstacles may be marked with numbers indicating the order in which they must be completed. Courses are complicated enough that a dog could not complete them correctly without human direction. In competition, the handler must assess the course, decide on handling strategies, and direct the dog through the course, with precision and speed equally important. Many strategies exist to compensate for the inherent difference in human and dog speeds and the strengths and weaknesses of the various dogs and handlers.”end quoteAgility is best trained through positive reinforcement, through methods like shaping which is when a handler must patiently wait for the dog to perform a certain task and will then immediately reward the behavior. Thus trying to shape the way the animal behaves! Sandra has a passion for dogs and dogs sports that is quietly contagious. Being semi-retired, she now has the opportunity to take classes as well as teach them! Lucky dog agility is the embodiment of kindness in practice! The use of positive reinforcement for training gets the dogs and handlers excited about doing agility! Such exercises build better connections between the dog and it's owner and all of these things create a community of kindness around dog sports!!! Please enjoy my interview with owner and operator of Lucky Dog Agility in Winterville, Sandra Bird. Support the show (https://www.paypal.com/donate?business=3ETJ2WW4FUWSY&no_recurring=0&item_name=Podcast+fundraising¤cy_code=USD)

On the northern side of the Pyrenees, surrounded by high mountain peaks, lies the beautiful Val d'Aran, the Aran valley. Its geographic isolation has helped foster and protect its distinct culture, including the Aranese language, a dialect of Occitan. Biologist and mountain guide Sara Arjó, head of Cultural Heritage in Val d'Aran, Elisa Ros, and Jordi Gavaldà from the center of snow avalanche prediction offer their thoughts on the natural and human forces that shape this land.  Alan Ruiz Terol chats to Lorcan Doherty about the history of this unique place and recounts some tales he picked up on his recent visit.  Jusèp Loís Sans Socasau reads an extract of Mossen Josèp Condò's poem 'Era lengua aranesa'.  There are two Aranese phrases this week. 'Badalhi-badalhò, hame a o dromir vò', which means if someone's yawning, they're either hungry or tired, and 'long com era hame de mai', which means 'long like May's hunger'.

Stage 18 of the Tour de France saw a second dominant victory for Tadej Pogačar in the clouds of the Pyrenees, on the summit finish of Luz Ardiden – where Sir Brad and Graham Willgoss are marooned in a traffic jam for their latest look back at the day's racing. Did a short and sharp stage – just short of 130km with two HC climbs – play into the champion elect's hands? “He didn't really have to blow his rivals away, he just did the last bit,” says Brad on Pogačar's supremacy. “They could have done with another climb in there really, instead of having 60-70km on the flat beforehand. “Stages like that, with climbs like that, almost need another two climbs in there to make it a proper Pyrenean stage. It lends itself to everyone being fresh at the end.”Questions, too, for Ineos, still empty-handed at this Tour. We saw the familiar Ineos (/Sky) mountain train of old going full gas on the final climb, but that just meant Pogacar willingly climbed aboard. “Is it worth doing that knowing they were going to get beat in the end? There was no way they were going to crack him.”Brad says it would have been a very different Tour had G and Roglic not crashed. But as things stand, Pogačar not only holds the Maillot Jaune but also the Young Rider's and Polka Dot Jerseys. But not the Points Jersey. Full of praise for Mark Cavendish's Deceuninck – Quick-Step team for guiding the Green Jersey through the mountains, Brad says his old friend is in the perfect position to make history with two more flat stages to come. Welcome to the second producer profile this time we are in southern France, Languedoc specifically in Fitou with Owner/Winemaker, Katie Jones of Domaine Jones. Katie moved to southern France from England to work for the local Co-operative, as the years passed she decided to open her own winery in 2008, starting off with a mere two hectares of old vine Carignan, something unheard of in her village of Touchon. Katie looks for vineyards no-one else wants would only be a slight exaggeration. Most other growers in the area wouldn’t be interested in her modest twelve hectares of vines spread across vineyards in Maury and Tuchan.. she looks for low yields with high quality, and the rather poor, sloping ground that the very old, traditional vines cling to gives her just that.Katie's tell us how she managed to acquire those many micro old vines vineyards in her villages it was a bit of luck that they weren’t uprooted in the early 2000s when the local regulatory body ripped up many hectares of vineyards. Katies has now a collection of rare varieties that she uses for her wines.Wine cooperatives in France started in the late 1800s, mostly out of economic necessity, and continue to flourish today particularly in southern France, and that’s why it is more difficult to find independent grower, winemakers in the region. We also talked about why the Fitou viticultural area is, unusually, got split into two separate zones for historical reason. They are both finger-like enclaves stretching northwards into the larger Corbieres viticultural area. Each measure around 13 kilometres (8 miles) from north to south and less than half that from east to west. The two areas have a combined vineyard area of around 2650 hectares (6500 acres). The inland 'finger' is known unofficially as Fitou Montagneux ('mountainous Fitou'). This area is relatively hilly – vineyards here lie anywhere between 100m and 400m (330ft to 1310ft).The low-yielding vines here can produce fruits of great quality. In recent years this is being more reliably achieved. Its coastal counterpart, Fitou Maritime, is situated on slightly flatter land at the transition point between the Pyrenean foothills and the coastal plain. Vineyards here rarely sit above 150m in altitude. To read more about D Jones and Fitou: https://domainejones.com/https://www.languedoc-wines.com/en

Pyrenean Shepherd: Small, Smart, Rare Joni McKeown with Pyrenean Shepherds Pyrenean Shepherd fancier Joni McKeown shares details of this endangered herding breed from the Pyrenees mountains of France. The small herding breed accompanied the Great Pyrenees guarding the flocks that moved between the isolated and remote regions of the mountains and valleys. “When people come to shows, everyone thinks they are cute.  They have a mischievous, funny sense of humor, and a really cute little head, but this is a working dog. It should not just be a pretty face,” McKeown said. A brindle PyrShep showing cording on the back half of the dog as is correct. From the AKC website: These tough, lean, and lively herders, famous for their vigorous and free-flowing movement, come in two coat varieties: rough-faced and smooth-faced. Roughs have profuse, “windswept” hair above the muzzle and a generally harsh coat; smooths have short facial hair, a finer-textured coat, and a slightly longer, pointier muzzle. Both varieties of this sinewy, rectangular breed come in many colors and patterns. Pyr Sheps see the world through dark almond-shaped eyes conveying an alert and cunning expression. Pyrenean Shepherd puppy PyrSheps are a prime example of why pet owners should learn the history of a breed in order to better understand its temperament and behavior. “Because of their job, the breed is just hardwired to see the world as friend or foe. There’s not a lot of grey area for them. Preserving that heritage is so important. French judges fuss at us for how friendly our dogs are. We kind of live in a world where we need the dogs to be friendlier. But we’re losing genetics if we start turning a Pyrenean Shepherd into a Golden Retriever (temperament). You can’t expect to have that across the board,” McKeown said. Faces rough or smooth Differences between the two “types” are notable. Head and body structure are different and both types are born in the same litter. Traits definitely pass together, McKeown observed. The rough face develops a characteristic “windblown look” of hair on its face, she added. “This is the only breed that only cords on the back half of the body. In France all the adult dogs are corded. Different dogs have different types of cords. In the US you don’t see that many people cording the dogs. It’s a very rustic look. But you can keep them brushed out,” McKeown said. The standard offers no preference for corded or not in the show ring. PyrShep on the move. The coat is described as half way between sheep and goat hair. It has a very coarse texture. Exhibitors are encouraged to not do a lot of bathing or blow drying as it changes the coat texture. The standard also includes strong penalties for trimming anything but the pads of the feet. Best owners PyrSheps can live 17 to 20 years. They need a dedicated owner who will give them lots of activity, McKeown noted. “These dogs really, really need a job. The breed is brilliant. Almost frightening sometimes the things they figure out. They’re not always the best breed for a novice dog owner. More intense even than other herding breeds because they’re closer to the roots,” McKeown said. In this episode of The Cycling Podcast Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and François Thomazeau review the 18th stage to Pau, which was won by French sprinter Arnaud Démare. Démare’s victory came 24 hours after Andre Greipel questioned his GPS data on the final Pyrenean climb at the end of stage 17. We clear up the accusations as Démare was vindicated by several rival teams. We also focus on Geraint Thomas and speak to several people who have known the Welshman since the beginning of his career. The Cycling Podcast is supported by Rapha and Science In Sport.

This episode gives you the low-down on my whereabouts for the next few episodes.   I am in France riding the Raid Pyrenean in aid of the Homerton Hope charity: justgiving.com/fornell    What does this mean? I'm cycling 720km in distance and 16,000m in elevation through the Pyrenean mountain range to raise £5k for Homerton Hospital Charity.    You can check out our stage maps here: tinyurl.com/ridefornell   I'm about 65% to my target. If you feel that you would like to add something towards the target I'd be hugely grateful! To make things simple you can text Nell47 £20 to 70070  - you can amend the amount to whatever you wish. Or here is my justgiving page: justgiving.com/fornell      I wish you a lifetime free of saddle sore, with open roads and blue skies a plenty. Have a wonderful week!    And here is my usual out of office.    In the meantime, feel free to...
