This week on the Midwest Flyways Podcast, Joey Vassallo and Cal Ness break down one of the biggest waterfowl conversations Minnesota has seen in years: the Minnesota Duck Summit.   Held in Nicollet near Swan Lake, the summit brought together more than 300 hunters, conservationists, biologists, and agency officials to ask a simple question: where have all the ducks gone? Joey and Cal dive into the biggest topics from the event, including declining mallard numbers, the push to reduce the hen mallard limit from two birds to one, concerns over early September seasons, hunting pressure, and whether Minnesota's current regulations are doing more harm than good.   The guys also discuss the growing belief among hunters that ducks are being pressured off public water too early and too often. At the summit, 78% of attendees said hunting pressure is pushing ducks off public land, while 93% supported creating or expanding duck refuges. Many hunters also supported later openers, ending September duck hunting, and earlier daily closing times to give birds more rest.   Are Minnesota's duck problems being caused by habitat loss, modern agriculture, predators, hunting pressure, or all of the above? Sub-gauge shotguns offer a slightly different experience when duck hunting than a 10 or 12 gauge can and it's hard to explain until you just go out and try it. Joey and Cal have been trying different things all year and we've been shooting 20's for some time. This year we tried out a Weatherby Orion 28 SxS and a .410 and absolutely loved using these guns. So much happening in the sports world and much of it directly involves Minnesota sports teams. We start with the bidding line for Giannis and the wolves appeared very interested in being at the front of that pack. We talk about how insane the trades are in the NBA involving draft picks and more which aligns with how ridiculous the trade offer would have to be for Giannis. Is it worth what teams would have to give up? Then, the past few weeks have been fairly interesting for lots of NFL teams as the fallout of this past season has to be answered for by front office and coaching staff members. Kwesi Adofo-Mensah was not exempt from this and this past week he lost his job because Sam Darnold took the Seahawks to the Super Bowl. Well the debate heard round the waterfowl community has made its way to us. For the last couple of months you've probably seen all of the discussions, debates, and outright fighting regarding flooded corn and whether or not this practice should be allowed to continue. While purposefully flooding corn is not a common practice, it is in some parts of the country and there are strong opinions in the south regarding it. Joey and Cal give their thoughts about the debate and look at multiple different avenues when it comes to the lack of mallards in the south. We're not saying we're right or that we know everything and you may have a different opinion one way or the other. We get the question all the time: how do you balance your time hunting with your time at home and with your family and friends. So we thought we would discuss this week how we've been able to keep everybody happy…most of the time. What a turn of events for Sam Darnold. After the Vikings let him walk in free agency and the story was about a guy who couldn't win the big games, Darnold has come out on top after beating the Rams in the NFC Championship game and advancing the Seahawks to the Super Bowl. Vikings fans are left wondering what if and the story still has another chapter to write. We review the upcoming Super Bowl and make our picks about who will win. On another note, pettiness does not die after high school, and Bill Belichick will somehow not be a first ballot Hall of Famer. There is a huge conspiracy going around about who in their right mind wouldn't have voted for Bill to make it in. For Minnesota native and 2009 World Duck Calling Champion Mike Anderson, everything has changed and all the while stayed the same. Mike's love and passion for duck hunting and duck calling have transcended time and place. We've gotten a lot of people messaging us saying these new hunters don't know any of the standard waterfowl hunter etiquette.
