Their genuine love for the sport shines through in their discussions, which adds a level of authenticity and enthusiasm that is infectious. Additionally, the hosts are knowledgeable and share their expertise freely, making it a great resource for learning about waterfowl hunting.

However, there is one potential downside to this podcast. Some of the humor may not appeal to everyone, especially those who are not from the same generation as the hosts. History Lesson: Duck Clubs

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 4, 2026 11:13

In this episode of Ten Minute Tuesday, the guys explore the origins of America's legendary duck clubs and how simple hunting camps evolved into some of the most influential places in waterfowl history. Long before modern lodges and managed properties, these clubs became gathering places where business leaders, politicians, and passionate hunters came together to experience some of the greatest duck hunting the continent has ever seen. The episode highlights the rise of iconic clubs like the Chicago Gun Club, the incredible waterfowl habitat that once lined the Illinois River, and the traditions that helped shape modern duck hunting culture. From hand-carved cedar decoys and wooden boats to train rides into the marsh and mornings spent waiting on endless flights of canvasbacks and mallards, it's a fascinating look at a time when the experience of the hunt mattered just as much as the birds themselves. Along the way, the guys reflect on why the idea of a classic duck club still captures the imagination of waterfowl hunters today. Why Every Duck Hunter Matters

In this episode of Ten Minute Tuesday, the guys take a step back from tactics and gear to talk about something even more important: what it really means to be a waterfowl hunter. As duck numbers face ongoing declines and wetlands continue to disappear, they discuss why every hunter has a role to play in protecting the future of the sport and why conservation is about much more than simply improving hunting opportunities. The conversation explores the realities facing waterfowl today, including declining wild mallard populations, wetland loss, and the importance of organizations like Ducks Unlimited and Delta Waterfowl. Rather than focusing on controversy, the episode encourages hunters to become students of the resource, understand the challenges facing ducks, and recognize how small the waterfowl hunting community really is compared to the rest of the country. Whether you're a lifelong waterfowl hunter or just getting started, this episode offers an important perspective on the responsibility that comes with the sport and why protecting ducks today ensures future generations will have the same opportunities we enjoy. It sparks a conversation about where this current Wolves team ranks among every Minnesota roster and what Ant still needs to accomplish to officially claim the top spot. Then it's time for sports. The guys dive into one of the biggest debates of the podcast: did the Minnesota Wild have any choice but to pay Kirill Kaprizov? Using Sidney Crosby's historic contract as the measuring stick, they break down NHL salary cap percentages, Florida's tax advantage, whether Kaprizov is truly a top-tier superstar, and just how much a franchise player should command. It's a passionate hockey debate that has the crew ranking the NHL's best players and arguing over what it really takes to build a Stanley Cup contender. This week on Sports Guyz Only, the boys kick things off with a birthday controversy, concussion counts, aging athlete problems, and a debate over whether anyone under 30 can truly appreciate how quickly the body starts betraying you. Cal celebrates another trip around the sun, Gavin accidentally misses the birthday by a day, and the crew somehow ends up discussing CTE before they've even touched sports.   From there, it's a full playoff recap as the guys break down the Carolina Hurricanes' dominant Stanley Cup run. They discuss Jordan Staal's unbelievable playoff performance at age 37, whether he's one of the most underrated players of the last two decades, Rod Brind'Amour's growing Carolina legacy, and how the Hurricanes put together one of the most dominant postseason runs of the modern NHL era. Plus, Taylor Hall's redemption story, Brandon Bussey's improbable Finals debut, and why Vegas may have finally run into the one team built to beat them.   The conversation shifts to the NBA Finals, where the Knicks capture their first championship in over 50 years. The crew debates whether it was the most competitive gentleman's sweep ever, questions the Spurs' late-game coaching decisions, and dives into Jalen Brunson's place in Knicks history. There's also plenty of discussion about Victor Wembanyama's increasingly villainous reputation, Mike Brown's coaching redemption arc, and whether Minnesota may eventually need a new voice leading Anthony Edwards and the Timberwolves.   Plus: World Cup excitement and Messi's final international run NHL tax advantages and why Florida keeps attracting stars The greatest "what if" playoff scenarios Steve Kerr's all-time unfortunate naming decision Shohei Ohtani gambling conspiracy theories Vikings frustrations and Brian O'Neill debates A chaotic sports trivia showdown that ends with Nathaniel taking the crown   As always, it's championship reactions, wild sports hypotheticals, old-man complaints, and enough hockey talk to make Gavin happy for at least one week. Jeremy shares what surprised him most about waterfowl hunting — not just the shooting, but the reverence for wildlife, the connection to the outdoors, and the camaraderie that comes from chasing birds with good friends.   Along the way, we get into: • South Dakota duck camp stories • Permission hunting and meeting local farmers • Duck stroganoff that changed Jeremy's life • Liar's Dice marathons until 2am • And why waterfowl hunting feels different than almost anything else   At its core, this episode is about more than hunting. It's about reconnecting with something honest, ancestral, and deeply human — the kind of experience modern life rarely gives us anymore.   Whether you're a lifelong waterfowler or someone who's never stepped foot in a blind, this conversation will probably make you understand why people keep coming back to the flyway year after year. From Open Marshes to Regulated Access: The Hunting License

Play Episode Listen Later May 5, 2026 14:08

There was a time when hunting required no permission. If you could reach the marsh, you could hunt it. In this episode, we explore how that changed—and why.   As waterfowl populations collapsed in the late 1800s, states began asking a new question: who owns the wildlife? What followed was the birth of the hunting license—an idea that sparked resistance, challenged tradition, and reshaped the future of hunting.   From early pushback in places like Minnesota to the enforcement era, the Lacey Act, and the rise of hunter-funded conservation, this is the story of how conflict turned into stewardship.   Because the hunting license didn't start as conservation—it started as confrontation. And today, it represents something bigger: The shift from taking what you can… to protecting what remains.   Thanks so much for listening and be sure to subscribe and review!   Join Flyways Hunt Club and get 1 month free! The guys get real about chasing passions, building Midwest Flyways over the past decade, and what it actually takes to balance family, work, and an obsession with the outdoors.   From hilarious stories and industry insights to a raw conversation about dream lifestyles—owning land out west, building cabins by hand, and refusing to give up the things that make life worth living—this episode hits on what it means to build a life you're proud of.   If you've ever felt the pull to hunt more, create more, or just live differently… this one's for you. Shotgun Evolution: From Flintlocks to Semi-Autos

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 21, 2026 14:55

In this Ten Minute Tuesday History Lesson episode, Cal traces the full evolution of the shotgun and how it shaped waterfowl hunting from the earliest days of market hunting to today.   We start in the pre-1800s era of flintlock muskets, smoothbores, and punt guns—when ducks were harvested for survival and commerce, not sport. From there, we move into the birth of the true shotgun in Europe with early innovators like Joseph Manton and Purdey, and follow its arrival in America as wingshooting begins to take form.   The episode breaks down the biggest turning points in shotgun history: the invention of the self-contained shell, the rise of breech-loading doubles, and the golden age of American makers like Parker, L.C. Smith, Ithaca, and Remington. We then explore how repeating shotguns changed everything—Winchester 1897 pump actions, Browning's Auto-5 semi-auto revolution, and the regulatory response that followed, including the 3-shell federal limit that still shapes waterfowl hunting today.   From mid-century workhorses like the Remington 870 and Mossberg 500 to the global shift brought by imports from Beretta, Browning, and more, we track how accessibility and reliability transformed the average hunter's experience.   Finally, we land in the modern era with purpose-built waterfowl platforms like the Weatherby Sorix, advanced materials, steel and tungsten shot, and the ongoing debate that has echoed for over 150 years: how much firepower is “too much” for fair chase hunting? From black powder to precision machines—this is the story of the shotgun, and the culture of waterfowl hunting it built.   Join Flyways Hunt Club and get 1 month free! Duck Summit Recap

This week on the Midwest Flyways Podcast, Joey Vassallo and Cal Ness break down one of the biggest waterfowl conversations Minnesota has seen in years: the Minnesota Duck Summit.   Held in Nicollet near Swan Lake, the summit brought together more than 300 hunters, conservationists, biologists, and agency officials to ask a simple question: where have all the ducks gone? Joey and Cal dive into the biggest topics from the event, including declining mallard numbers, the push to reduce the hen mallard limit from two birds to one, concerns over early September seasons, hunting pressure, and whether Minnesota's current regulations are doing more harm than good.   The guys also discuss the growing belief among hunters that ducks are being pressured off public water too early and too often. At the summit, 78% of attendees said hunting pressure is pushing ducks off public land, while 93% supported creating or expanding duck refuges. Many hunters also supported later openers, ending September duck hunting, and earlier daily closing times to give birds more rest.   Are Minnesota's duck problems being caused by habitat loss, modern agriculture, predators, hunting pressure, or all of the above? Joey and Cal sort through the arguments, the science, and what changes could shape the future of duck hunting in Minnesota.   Join Flyways Hunt Club and get 1 month free! History Lesson: Pintail Controversy

Why did pintail limits drop… even when hunters were still seeing birds?   In this Midwest Flyways history episode, we break down one of the most debated topics in duck hunting history — the rise, fall, and ongoing management of the northern pintail. From booming populations in the 1950s to sharp declines in the 1960s and 70s, this episode dives deep into the moment when hunters and biologists collided over what was really happening.   We cover the real reasons behind pintail population declines, including Prairie Pothole Region habitat loss, agricultural expansion, and why nest success rates crashed below sustainable levels. More importantly, we explore the tension between what hunters saw in the field versus what the data showed — and why that disconnect still exists today.   This episode also explains how the pintail debate helped shape modern waterfowl management, including the development of Adaptive Harvest Management (AHM), species-specific regulations, and population-based season structures that still impact duck hunting today. If you've ever questioned duck limits, season changes, or how wildlife agencies make decisions — this is the episode that explains it.   Perfect for duck hunters, waterfowl enthusiasts, and anyone interested in conservation, flyway management, and the future of hunting. Plus, a look at how teams like Illinois are building rosters with a global pipeline.   With the NBA playoffs right around the corner, the conversation shifts to who's heating up at the right time and what storylines to watch as the postseason picture comes into focus.   To close things out, the guys highlight a powerful story from Gary Woodland, who has been open about his battle with a brain tumor and PTSD—bringing some real perspective beyond the game.   Thanks so much for listening and be sure to subscribe and review!   Join Flyways Hunt Club and get 1 month free! What started as simple tools rooted in Indigenous tradition grew into a craft, an industry, and eventually a collector's market worth millions.   We break down the golden age of carving, highlight legendary makers, and explore the shift from handmade birds to factory production. Along the way, we touch on wild stories of decoys found in barns and garages that turned out to be worth small fortunes—and the reality that some of the most valuable decoys ever made were once just tools in a working spread.   At its core, this episode isn't just about decoys—it's about the constant evolution of waterfowl hunting, the people who shaped it, and the one thing that's never changed: It's not about perfection… it's about creating confidence and fooling the bird.   Thanks so much for listening and be sure to subscribe and review!   Join Flyways Hunt Club and get 1 month free!
