Eight years ago, Chardon Education Association member Dan Heintz was feeling distressed by what was happening in federal politics, when he heard someone ask Michelle Obama, 'What do we do now?' She responded, "We do more," and Heintz realized he could do more by running for the Cleveland Heights-University Heights school board. Now, he wants more educators to follow his path and serve on school boards in their own local communities. In this episode, Heintz highlights the importance of having educators' voices in the room when decisions are made about school districts' policies, and shares his own experiences navigating some of the difficult decisions CH-UH Board of Education has had to make. The McGrath Institute for Church Life, together with the John S. and Virginia Marten Program in Homiletics and Liturgics, is hosting a homily contest on preaching the Blessed Virgin Mary. We invite ordained Catholic bishops, priests, and deacons to submit a five-to-seven-minute homily (in either English or Spanish) for one of three Marian solemnities: the Annunciation (March 25), the Assumption (August 15), or the Immaculate Conception (December 8).Winning homilies will draw on a homiletic methodology that brings together careful treatment of Scripture (including the lectionary and the various propers of the Mass of the day) with a spiritual exegesis that unveils the meaning of the Marian feast for the lives of the faithful today. We have more information about this competition and means for submitting homilies in our show notes for this episode. Today on the show, Msgr. Michael Heintz of the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend and Notre Dame's Department of Theology joins me to talk about the craft of preaching, the importance of Mary in the life of the Church, and renewing the sacramental imagination of the faithful. Follow-up Resources: Announcing the Preaching Mary Homiletic Competition. Submissions should be emailed to ndcl@nd.edu no later than March 25, 2025. A health and safety representative (HSR) plays a crucial role when it comes to workplace safety, and IHSA's Deb Moskal and Doug Heintz return to the IHSA Safety Podcast to discuss their importance in the workplace. On Episode 102, Deb and Doug explained the legislative requirements for a health and safety representative in Ontario small businesses. On this episode, they discuss the importance of having a health and safety representative and how employers can help them flourish in their role. The role of a health and safety representative is not only to relay information from the employer but also to take concerns and ideas from fellow workers and communicate them to the employer. Deb emphasizes their critical role in monitoring and identifying hazards, such as unsafe equipment, chemicals, and ergonomic issues. HSRs help create awareness among workers about safety procedures and strengthen the safety culture from the worker's perspective.Employers are required to provide resources and support to HSRs to help them fulfill their role effectively. This includes providing them with the time needed to conduct inspections and investigations, and access to all locations that need to be inspected. Resources should also include tools and equipment necessary to carry out their tasks, basic health and safety training, and ongoing training and certifications, such as IHSA's Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) certification training. It's important that employers encourage an open line of communication between the HSR, workers, and the employer, which will provide opportunities for the HSR to receive feedback from workers on safety concerns and share updates from management. On this episode of the IHSA Safety Podcast, IHSA's Deb Moskal and Doug Heintz discuss the role of health and safety representatives (HSRs) in Ontario small businesses. Deb and Doug explain when a workplace requires a health and safety representative, how they are selected, and their functions according to workplace health and safety legislation. There are similarities between federal and provincial legislation regarding health and safety representatives, but there are also differences. Within provincial legislation, a health and safety representative is required in a workplace with six to 19 employees, with no requirement for a joint health and safety committee (JHSC). From a federal perspective, a health and safety representative is required for less than 20 employees in a workplace, with additional requirements depending on the nature of the work. The process for selecting and electing a health and safety representative is the same for both provincial and federal legislation. The Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) does not set specific formal qualifications or certifications for a health and safety representative, but there are several key requirements:· The individual must be a worker at the workplace, but not an employer, supervisor, or manager.· They are typically elected by workers through an open and transparent election process.· They must be willing to learn about health and safety issues, regulations, and workplace hazards. The duties of a health and safety representative include, but are not limited to, identifying any actual or potential workplace hazards, inspecting the workplace at least once a month, and making recommendations to the employer about health and safety concerns or initiatives. The global south needs to build out vast amounts of clean energy, and requires hundreds of billions of dollars annually to do. And yet, only a fraction of the investment going into clean energy and the net-zero transition is flowing into those growth markets. So why are so few investing?Lucy Heintz is partner and head of energy infrastructure at Actis, whose most recent Energy Fund represents over $6 billion of investable capital. She is a driving force behind the small slice of investment which does address clean energy in growth markets. Lucy joins Cleaning Up to unpack Actis' approach to investing in critical clean energy infrastructure projects across the Global South. Like the effervescent bubbles in her sparkling wine, Emily Heintz believes that true quality always rises to the top. Emily is the visionary behind Sèchey, a dynamic platform that includes a luxury dealcoholized wine brand, a dry bottle shop in South Carolina, and a thriving DTC business offering a wide range of alcohol analogs. Sèchey also curated Target's non-alcoholic adult beverage set, bringing elevated options to the mass retailer's shelves. Sèchey's strategic direction and impressive momentum caught the attention of InvestBev, a private equity firm specializing in adult beverages. In August, InvestBev made an undisclosed investment in the company, with founder Brian Rosen praising Sèchey for having “gotten farther with less than anyone else we've seen.” In this episode, Emily joins us for a dive deep into her vision for Sèchey and the journey of building the brand. Framed around a series of true or false questions, Emily discusses the key factors driving the growth of the non-alcoholic beverage category, how Gen Z and Millennial lifestyles are shaping awareness and trial, and why she believes the founder's voice is the most essential tool in connecting with customers. Show notes: 0:25: Emily Heintz, Founder & CEO, Sèchey – Emily and Ray sample some of Sèchey's sparkling wine, before she discusses her inspiration to start the company, whether her lack of experience in beverages impacted the company early on and why NA wine has the biggest upside among alcohol analogs. She also talks about what's driving traffic in Sèchey's retail store, whether category growth is directly tied to negative health effects of alcohol, and the gap between millennials and Gen Z consumers' perception of wine. Emily also highlights Sèchey's partnership with Target, her perspective that the future of NA beverages isn't in liquor stores, why she's only somewhat concerned about lower quality options in the space, and why she believes that the first adult beverage for younger generations should be a non-alcoholic one. Researchers analyzing data from NASA's James Webb Space Telescope have pinpointed three galaxies that may be actively forming when the universe was only 400 to 600 million years old. Webb's data shows these galaxies are surrounded by gas that the researchers suspect to be almost purely hydrogen and helium, the earliest elements to exist in the cosmos. Webb's instruments are so sensitive that they were able to detect an unusual amount of dense gas surrounding these galaxies. This gas will likely end up fueling the formation of new stars in the galaxies.“These galaxies are like sparkling islands in a sea of otherwise neutral, opaque gas,” explained Kasper Heintz, the lead author and an assistant professor of astrophysics at the Cosmic Dawn Center (DAWN) at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark. “Without Webb, we would not be able to observe these very early galaxies, let alone learn so much about their formation.”“We're moving away from a picture of galaxies as isolated ecosystems. At this stage in the history of the universe, galaxies are all intimately connected to the intergalactic medium with its filaments and structures of pristine gas,” added Simone Nielsen, a co-author and PhD student also based at DAWN.The universe was a very different place several hundred million years after the big bang during a period known as the Era of Reionization. Gas between stars and galaxies was largely opaque. Gas throughout the universe only became fully transparent around 1 billion years after the big bang. Galaxies' stars contributed to heating and ionizing the gas around them, causing the gas to eventually become completely transparent.By matching Webb's data to models of star formation, the researchers also found that these galaxies primarily have populations of young stars. “The fact that we are seeing large gas reservoirs also suggests that the galaxies have not had enough time to form most of their stars yet,” Watson added. This is Only the StartWebb is not only meeting the mission goals that drove its development and launch – it is exceeding them. “Images and data of these distant galaxies were impossible to obtain before Webb,” explained Gabriel Brammer, a co-author and associate professor at DAWN. “Plus, we had a good sense of what we were going to find when we first glimpsed the data – we were almost making discoveries by eye.”There remain many more questions to address. Where, specifically, is the gas? How much is located near the centers of the galaxies – or in their outskirts? Is the gas pristine or already populated by heavier elements? Significant research lies ahead. “The next step is to build large statistical samples of galaxies and quantify the prevalence and prominence of their features in detail,” Heintz said. The researchers' findings were possible thanks to Webb's Cosmic Evolution Early Release Science (CEERS) Survey, which includes spectra of distant galaxies from the telescope's NIRSpec (Near-Infrared Spectrograph), and was released immediately to support discoveries like this as part of Webb's Early Release Science (ERS) program.

In this episode, we talk about one woman's quest to bring non-alcoholic adult beverages to the masses. Our guest is Emily Heintz, founder of Sèchey. Sèchey is a retailer focused on alcohol-free and functional drinks — and also low dose THC products – that launched in 2021. Sèchey has a bricks-and-mortar shop in Charleston, South Carolina, an ecommerce platform that ships nationwide, and a curated collection of products within Target stores nationwide. Emily has a fascinating story. After the retail veteran launched Sèchey, she found fundraising efforts to be challenging. Sadly, that's all too familiar a scenario for female founders: According to Pitchbook data, in 2023, women-founded startups received 2% or less of venture capital (VC) funding in the United States and Europe. This number has remained unchanged for over a decade. But Emily didn't throw up her hands and quit. Instead, she found an innovative way to build her retail brand nationally by partnering with the mass retailer Target. Sèchey now has a curated collection of its products nationwide, in some 2,000 Target stores. The brands carried there include Surely, Starla, and De Soi wines, non alcoholic cocktails from Ghia, Edna's, and Mingle, and functional beverages from Kin Euphorics among others, along with Sèchey's own branded line of dealcoholized wines. If you're interested in what's happening in the non-alcoholic beverage space, you won't want to miss this episode. We cover a lot of ground. A few of the key takeaways: How Sèchey landed a curated product collection within Target stores nationwide What Boisson's closure means for the emerging non-alcohol product landscape Understanding the regulatory challenges faced by non-alcoholic brands How retail pop-ups helped Sèchey build brand awareness Why product tastings are so crucial for driving bottle sales The shifting distribution landscape for non-alcoholic and THC beverages Why Sèchey is modeling itself after Sephora Customer data — who's buying non-alcoholic and functional beverages How Sèchey developed its own in-house brand of dealcoholized wines What e-commerce looks like in the non-alc beverage space How to pitch Sèchey if you're a non-alc or THC brand Stay tuned for our next episode dropping on May 15. Did you do Dry January and now you want to extend that feeling a little bit? Emily Heintz of Sechey says Sechey stands for “dry-ish,” which means you can go with the non-alcoholic stuff in her store all the time, or when you just feel the need to dry out a little. She's latched onto a big trend, and Target has noticed and is putting Sechey non-alcoholic beverages in their stores. Emily Heintz, on the Hidden F&B Charleston.

Kim Heintz is an FDN who primarily helps her clients reverse debilitating gut issues. She has been an FDN for 4.5 years, but her own health journey began long before that. She began getting migraines early in life and they intensified in her twenties - to the point where she was getting them 3-5 times a week. When she was 28, she had a migraine that lasted an entire year straight. On top of this, she dealt with a myriad of other symptoms including insomnia, brain fog, chronic fatigue, anxiety, and depression. She was told by a doctor that she would have to deal with chronic migraines for the rest of her life. Determined to not accept that fate, she ultimately found the functional health space, and it changed her life. Through functional lab testing, she uncovered a lot of gut issues, food sensitivities, and nutrient imbalances. Through addressing those, she no longer gets migraines and all the other symptoms disappeared as well. Not only did her symptoms disappear, but she has taken things to a completely different level. In addition to running her business, she is also a top competitor in long distance mountain biking in the Midwest of the United States, often taking a podium spot. She feels better at 42 than she ever did at 32 and even 22. Her own life-changing experience is what led her to become an FDN so that she could help others experience the same freedom she has.
