UPDATE: Permaculture Freedom podcast is now called Land by Hand podcast. Listen to the first couple minutes to learn more about this update and the direction the show is headed. And for the main content of this episode...It's Sauna season and I thought this show might be a great introduction to the cultural traditions of Sauna from the far north of Scandinavia and it's migration to the Upper Midwest of North America. I've put together a beautiful introduction to Sauna from many voices sharing their traditions, stories & folklore. Enjoy!“My sauna cabin is primitive, one step removed from the first excavations in the hillsides of Finland. I wanted it that way for I felt it must be close to the earth, so much a part of the natural environment that simple values would not be lost… Simplicity is the keynote, but when steam rises from the stones and the sprays of steam and give off their fragrance, the sauna comes into its own.” -Sigurd Olson, Runes of the NorthLearn more about this episode, watch the videos and read the show notes on this episode here >- - -Disclaimer: This is another episode exploring different themes in Permaculture and related fields with audio clips, interviews & anything else we can find. Learn more about this tradition from several voices speaking about the spirit of making Maple Syrup. ...the truth is that the earth endows us with great gifts, the other half is that the gift is not enough. In honor of our wintertime in our neck of the woods, we are focusing on different themes of making the most of long winter downtime in the Northern parts of the world. To start things off, we begin this series with introducing the concept of Slöjd (or Sloyd) which is a Swedish word that for many hundreds of years has referred to being self sufficient through the act of craft. Simple hand tools, simple techniques to build anything. Hear some interviews with several folks of the Scandinavian Slöjd tradition of woodworking and beyond to American, English & Japanese traditions as well."Slöjd is part of the self-sufficient household, how people survived before industrialization. Slöjd is the work method farmers used when they made tools for house building, farming and fishing, and objects for their household needs. For thousands of years, the knowledge of the material has deepened, and the use of the tools has evolved along with the understanding of how function, composition and form combine to make objects strong and useful. The word slöjd derives from the word stem slög, which dates to the 9th century. Slög means ingenious, clever and artful. It reflects the farmers' struggle for survival and how it made them skilled in using the natural materials surrounding the farm: wood, flax, hide, fur, horn and me- tal. I have picked up a dialect expression from my home county, Västerbotten, that has become a personal motto. We say Int' oslög, “not uncrafty,” about a person who is handy and practical. Slöjd in its pure self-sufficient use is characterized by an individual using simple tools with great skill, a deep knowledge of raw materials, and the ability to solve functional problems. The resulting objects are intended for the maker's personal use." - Jögge SundquistLearn more about the inspiring folks from this episode, watch the videos and read the show notes on this episode here >Hear about green woodworking for carving spoons, turning bowls and more from voices like Jögge Sundquist, Jarrod Dahl, Ben Law, Barn the Spoon, Robin Wood, Sylva Spoon & more…Enjoy and happy woodworking!- - -Disclaimer: This is another episode exploring different themes in Permaculture and related fields with audio clips, interviews & anything else we can find. How we can rebuild local communities and transform commerce by staying connected to nature, our neighbors, and the larger world while reducing our energy needs and eating more nourishing food. This is most likely the first of many episodes to share about Joel Salatin's inpiring work and perhaps we can even get an interview with Joel in the near future! "Know your food, know your farmers, and know your kitchen." - Joel SalatinJoel Salatin, 62, calls himself a Christian libertarian environmentalist capitalist lunatic farmer. Others who like him call him the most famous farmer in the world, the high priest of the pasture, and the most eclectic thinker from Virginia since Thomas Jefferson.  Those who don't like him call him a bio-terrorist, Typhoid Mary, charlatan, and starvation advocate. With a room full of debate trophies from high school and college days, 12 published books, and a thriving multi-generational family farm, he draws on a lifetime of food, farming and fantasy to entertain and inspire audiences around the world.  He's as comfortable moving cows in a pasture as addressing CEOs in a Wall Street business conference. He co-owns, with his family, Polyface Farm in Swoope, Virginia.  Featured in the New York Times bestseller Omnivore's Dilemma and award-winning documentary Food Inc., the farm services more than 5,000 families, 50 restaurants, 10 retail outlets, and a farmers' market with salad bar beef, pigaerator pork, pastured poultry, and forestry products.  When he's not on the road speaking, he's at home on the farm, keeping the callouses on his hands and dirt under his fingernails, mentoring young people, inspiring visitors, and promoting local, regenerative food and farming systems.Learn more about Joel Salatin, watch the videos and read the show notes on this episode here >I will now let Joel speak for himself with a few of my favorite quotes..."Our community of rebels, of humble truth seekers, wants to turn our culture around. Bill Mollison, the “Father of Permaculture,” has truly left the world a better place than he found it. As co-founder of the system of Permaculture with David Holmgren , he created a holistic design system that emulates systems that exist in Nature to create sustainable human settlements and food production systems which integrate harmoniously with the natural environment. Bill developed the Permaculture Institute and a formalized system for training Permaculture practitioners. His pioneering work had a broad and far-reaching global influence, directly impacted hundreds of thousands of lives, and indirectly affecting many millions more worldwide in a profound and positive way.Learn more about Bill Mollison, watch the videos and read the show notes on this episode here >This is most likely the first of many episodes to share about Bill Mollison in his amazing video series, 'Global Gardener'. Global Gardener is a documentary film series about the permaculture approach to sustainable agriculture. I highly encourage you to watch all the videos, but here is the audio to learn from Bill's wisdom while in your garden or hammock - where the permaculture designer becomes a recliner ;) I will now let Bill speak for himself with a few of my favorite quotes...“The impetus for the work I do is to leave our children gardens, not deserts.”  – Bill Mollison “Sitting at our back doorsteps, all we need to live a good life lies about us. Sun, wind, people, buildings, stones, sea, birds and plants surround us. Cooperation with all these things brings harmony, opposition to them brings disaster and chaos.”  ―  Bill Mollison, Introduction to Permaculture “The tragic reality is that very few sustainable systems are designed or applied by those who hold power, and the reason for this is obvious and simple: to let people arrange their own food, energy and shelter is to lose economic and political control over them. We should cease to look to power structures, hierarchical systems, or governments to help us, and devise ways to help ourselves.”  ―  Bill Mollison, Permaculture: A Designers' Manual"I teach self-reliance, the world's most subversive practice. I teach people how to grow their own food, which is shockingly subversive. So, yes, it's seditious. But it's peaceful sedition."― Bill MollisonPermaculture is a philosophy of working with, rather than against nature; of protracted and thoughtful observation rather than protracted and thoughtless labor; and of looking at plants and animals in all their functions, rather than treating any area as a single product system― Bill Mollison“Though the problems of the world are increasingly complex, the solutions remain embarrassingly simple.” ― Bill MollisonLearn more about Bill Mollison, watch the videos and read the show notes on this episode here >- - -Disclaimer: This is another episode exploring different themes in Permaculture and related fields with audio clips, interviews & anything else we can find. Philosophy of Biodynamic Farming + Rudolph Steiner

Rudolph Steiner anticipated the growth of organic farming in his opposition to chemical fertilizers. In his view, a farm should be a self-contained ecological entity. Biodynamic Farming is based on Steiner's spiritual scientific research drawn from the belief that everything that is alive is a process undergoing a constant transformation. Compared to organic farming (in common they have: a holistic vision, a closed cycle farming organism, no synthetic chemicals, use of species that are native to the region, no extreme specialization), biodynamic agriculture is based on a way of thinking and acting that respects both the physical world and the non-physical, spiritual and cosmic realities acting in it....Man is seen as part of nature and not as working against nature: the fundamental aim of biodynamic agriculture is to restore balance and its purpose does not leave things to Nature, but goes beyond Nature, helping it, by supporting its evolution, to obtain a more fertile land that is richer with life....

P.A. Yeomans work had a very strong influence on the concepts of Permaculture design...One of his main approaches, referred to as Keyline design, details the principles, techniques and systems for ecological development of rural and urban landscapes. Keyline methods enable the rapid development of deep biologically fertile soil by converting subsoil into living topsoil. Keyline pattern cultivation enables the rapid flood irrigation of undulating land without terracing. Incidental results are the healing of soil erosion, bio-adsorption of salinity and the long term storage of atmospheric carbon in the soil as humus. The Keyline Scale of Permanence provides a priority guide to planning the various factors of broad scale development. I hope you enjoy some of these classic documentary videos & interviews about this regenerative approach to land management.

Regenerative Diet + Dr. Weston A. Price

Health is the topic of much conversation and controversy these days, but unfortunately diet doesn't seem to get as much attention as viruses, shots & germs...Food is our medicine which we consume several times a day and unfortunately there is so much conflict of opinion of the 'one right way' to do it. I'm not here to add my 'one right way' diet to that noise, but I am here to share about someone who has focused on the patterns beneath the surface. The research and findings of this man's work detail not so much a 'diet' but more of a pattern that adapts across the world to harmonize people and place to their own unique bioregional context. The patterns underneath the diet are the true understanding - vitamins, minerals, fat and nutrient-density which have been eroding from the global industrial food system for quite some time - the true health and vitality that is increasingly lacking from modern society. Because of this reason and many others, I have yet to find an approach to nourishing ourselves that is as simple, timeless, and so closely integrated with Nature as the approach that Dr. Weston A. Price has helped shed some light on. An approach that is as old as time and without which, we wouldn't be alive today... There is a 'new and improved' diet just about every day of the week, but this approach is one that stands the test of time. Now more than ever we need to focus on regeneration of our health AND our earth. Despite what you may hear from many mainstream sources, farming with animals, eating nutrient-dense foods and working WITH nature is part of the solution. I sincerely hope you find some info from this show helpful on your path towards wholeness and health.

In this episode, I am highlighting the interdisciplinary work of Buckminster Fuller and his emphasis on whole systems design. His approach of doing more with less has had a huge impact on folks both within and outside of Permaculture Design practice - including myself long before I heard the word Permaculture, I learned about Bucky Fuller, Geodesic domes, the Whole Earth Catalog and the whole systems design movement of the early & mid 20th Century. I also really identified with his discipline of learning for oneself, from direct experience - He states that "man must learn to think for himself, rather than follow blindly what he has been taught." I hope enjoy another show digging into the roots of Permaculture...
