This is a Vintage Selection from 2007The ConversationThe Restaurant Guy, Francis, visits viticulturist Barbara Shinn at her vineyard in Long Island, NY. As they walk the fields, they discuss how she became a biodynamic farmer and how that is expressed in the wine. She uses a variety of methods from fish guts to laser planters with sublime results. The Inside TrackThe Guys knew Barbara from The Red Meat Club (a monthly gathering of NYC restaurateurs) and her restaurant Home which she ran with husband David Page. The couple bought a vineyard and taught themselves how to grow grapes and make wine. Barbara talks about forging her own path to create a sustainable vineyard with excellent wines. “ My philosophy before we planted the vines was to make very, very high quality wine and to be as organic as possible. Our best winemaker friends and our best manager friends and even the viticultural section of Cornell University flat out said to us, ‘You cannot do both things at once. Here on the East Coast, we have too much disease pressure. It's too humid. You cannot be organic in this environment. So if you wanna make high quality wines, do that. Jeff Poppen, a Midwestern farm boy, helped develop an organic farm and Tennessee homestead in the mid-1970s, and ten years later began applying biodynamic principals and making the preparations to do so. His livelihood comes primarily from vegetable and cattle grown on the 250-acre Long Hungry Creek Farm, where cows, compost, and community keep the land vibrant and productive. Jeff advocates for a more peaceful agriculture by mentoring young farmers and gardeners, along with a bit of lecturing, consulting, hosting events, and facilitating a few new farm enterprises. His style of old-time farming comes from paying close attention to what elder farmers thought, felt, and did, and by studying how farms were managed before agricultural chemicals were first manufactured on a large scale over one hundred years ago. Like his animals, he gets his food from the farm.

In this, our 200th episode of Accidental Gods podcast, I am delighted to be joined by André Tranquilini, estate manager at Waltham Place, a 220 acred biodynamic estate in Berkshire, in the UK. André is a biodynamic farmer, consultant and teacher. He has been the manager at Waltham Place since 2018. André has worked extensively as a market gardener, Steiner school teacher and farmer, and was a founding member of the seed company, Living Seeds, in Portugal. Born in Brazil, André has had the opportunity to work and manage farms in his homeland, as well as Portugal and the UK. He has traveled widely teaching workshops and lecturing on Biodynamic Agriculture and is recognised as a biodynamic consultant by the international Biodynamic Agriculture section at the Goetheanum in Switzerland. This was one of the podcasts where we could have talked for hours, if not days. With is background in Brazil and coming from a mix of several racial groups, both colonised and colonisers, André brings a unique mix of perspectives just from the outset. We want our kids to have a lot less screen time. Yet we keep hearing that the only way to have a scalable business that sells while you're sleeping is online. How do we figure out things to make sure we stay in alignment with our values? How can we continue to be excited about an idea that we bring into the world, and at the same time, be present and enjoy our children?    This is a recent coaching conversation I had with Rianna Alvarado, a mom who wants to limit her kid's screen time and someone seeking alternative ways to scale her business so that she could align herself to her values and achieve educational goals with her homeschooled kids.    Juggling her roles being a mom of five and an entrepreneur, Rianna has this huge dream of creating something that's scalable, and ultimately, she wants to get all the money she needs to buy her own house.    We covered quite the gamut including key questions such as how Rianna Alvarado feels about her big and juicy business vision, what it would take for her to feel in sync with her mothering philosophy, her intrinsic motivation, how to leverage her existing workshop tools, as well as how to communicate her outcome to prospective clients and help them engage on a whole other level.   Now, let's work on your business. She has a lot of passions and she does her best to live honoring those desires while serving her family and friends in love, time, and honesty. She has been homeschooling her children for eight years and loves living life from the home.  She lives by the heart. So before they decide to assimilate new ways into their lives, it has to jive with their spirits. In her words, formulas just don't work for her family. Rianna fell in love with the Waldorf Philosophy when discovering Biodynamic Farming practices founded by Steiner and she incorporates the Charlotte Mason methodology into her life as well. Through this practice, she and her family have learned to listen, follow, and trust their inner voice.  Highlights Alignment: If you want to limit the time that your kids are on a screen, how is it that you can then build a business that is purely on-screen? It's something for you to consider.  Intentionality: You don't have to build a business that is purely online if that is not going to give you the joy that you desire out of your business. It all depends on what the intention is behind your business. If the intention is purely to make money then is that enough to drive you to the computer?  Desires: The idea of being left behind is something common with moms who decided to leave their corporate jobs or take breaks. We all have these internal desires. Income: If you want to contribute to your family's income, it is going to be important for you to be mindful of exactly how much money you need to amass. Then you have to price accordingly. Balance: There's this assumption that pouring into your business is going to take away your time as a mom. But you have to reach that point where it's a mutual thing and feeling that the more you're able to receive, the more you're able to give. Passion, service, community, and curiosity are the threads that weave the story of Mark Voss. Mark is a consummate educator, farmer, and real estate professional residing in Madison, Wisconsin. He is the founder of Voss Organics and is a Latitude Change Agent. Like many young people, curiosity and the longing for adventure first lured Mark to venture far and wide from his humble youth in the Midwest. From paradigm-shifting lessons during a Peace Corps service in Africa, a pilgrimage to Masanobu Fukuoka's farm while teaching English in Japan, and immersion into the field of biodynamic agriculture while starting a 60-family CSA farm, it is evident from this story that Mark has embodied the experiences and lessons to become a wise teacher himself.Mark lives and breathes community. His urban farm produces seed starts for his business Voss Organics, which serves the Madison area farmers markets. He is a recently retired public and charter schoolteacher where not only he taught French, but also left a wake of school gardening programs. During his last year of teaching in 2021, Mark and a fellow science teacher created a course for the students called “The Honorable Harvest” that they based on the literary work of “Braiding Sweetgrass” by Robin Wall Kimmerer. This special course helped students learned how people and plants have an integral relationship with each other. Mark sees tremendous potential to use real estate as the catalyst for positive social and environmental change. For him, real estate serves as an educational tool to not only impact individuals and families, but strengthen communities and networks of aligned businesses and organizations.
