The HBS hosts discuss Jordan Peele's special brand of horror with the author of Stepford Daughters, Johanna Isaacson. For a long time, or at least it seemed, horror films were considered to be beneath serious scrutiny. The problematic politics of such films were all too apparent in the violence brought to bear on women's bodies in countless slasher films. The racial politics were not much better; the cliche of the black character dying first exists for a reason. Gradually this changed, though, first with such groundbreaking critical studies such  as Carol Glover's Men, Women, and Chainsaws: Gender in the Modern Horror Film and Robin Wood's “An Introduction to the American Horror film.”In the past few years, horror films themselves have changed as well. Most notably Jordan Peele has made three films dealing with our “social demons”: Get Out (2017), Us (2019), and Nope (2022). To talk with us about horror, the films of Jordan Peele,  and how horror can be used to develop our critical understanding of capitalism, racism, and patriarchy, we have invited Johanna Isaacson author of Stepford Daughters: Weapons for Feminists in Contemporary Horror.Full episode notes available at this link:https://hotelbarpodcast.com/podcast/episode-109-jordan-peeles-horror-with-johanna-isaacson-------------------If you enjoy Hotel Bar Sessions podcast, please be sure to subscribe and submit a rating/review! What do you think about trust fund kids?   Most of you are probably picturing spoiled brats driving expensive cars and living in mansions as we see on TV and social media.   In this episode of the Share the Wealth Show, our guest Portia Wood busts the myth surrounding the term and tells us why we all deserve to be trust fund kids (but without the attitude). Portia is a generational wealth planning attorney and she discusses the importance of having an estate plan at the age of 18 regardless of whether or not you have any assets. By planning ahead, we can protect ourselves and make sure that our legacy lasts for generations to come.   Based in Los Angeles, Portia leads Wood Legal Group, LLP, an African American woman-owned and operated law firm specializing in estate planning, probate, and elder law that she runs with her mother and law partner, Robin Wood. Robin was inspired by someone she never met, American novelist, poet and children's fiction writer, Rachel Field. Rachel made Robin feel validated, grateful, fulfilled and empowered to embrace the life she had led. This journey enabled Robin to bring Rachel's light back into the world. Robin shares these powerful nuggets of life wisdom: - embrace those joyful times in your life - love the life you choose - there are many ways to follow a path in life - be patient - live in the moment - embrace mindfulness - fully embrace the present moment - look for mentors - find inspiration in people who followed a path before you - remain open to possibilities - never stop cultivating new relationships https://www.robincliffordwood.com  tags: Robin, Clifford, Wood, writer, author, poet, The, Field, House, Writer's, Life, Lost, Found, Island, Maine, story, stories, that, empower, empowering, empowerment, inspire, inspiring, inspiration, encourage, encouraging, encouragement, hope, light, podcast, Sean, https://storiesthatempower.com

Portia Wood a generational wealth-planning attorney based in Los Angeles, California talks with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™. Portia leads the Wood Legal Group a woman-owned and operated law firm specializing in estate planning, probate and elder law that she runs with her mother and law partner Robin Wood. They're on a quest to normalize the idea of Black, Latinx and LGBTQ families using trusts to build generational wealth. They serve all communities with special attention to the unique needs of Black, Brown and our LGBTQ families. Of course people of color who are also LGBTQ face a unique set of challenges and the Wood Legal Group is passionately focused on helping marginalized communities grow and protect wealth by being a trusted resource for accurate information and comprehensive, culturally competent estate planning. No one likes to address our mortality but with COVID taking its toll these past few years it is crucial to get proper estate planning that will ensure we all get the state and federal benefits of our marriages while avoiding probate, maintaining our privacy and protecting our assets. An LGBTQ couple can avoid numerous problems through proper estate planning and Portia explains that trusts aren't reserved just for the wealthy. They're for a variety of people and can solve many estate-planning problems. So if you've been avoiding getting your life in order during these challenging pandemic times perhaps this may help you to become more proactive for yourself and your families. We talked to Portia about her inspiration for creating the Wood Legal Group and as a fierce ally her spin on our LGBTQ issues.  Portia Wood is a member of the California State Bar, the Maryland State Bar, the American Bar Association, the California Association of Black Lawyers and the American Academy of Estate Planning Attorneys. She is also a frequent speaker at legacy wealth planning seminars. She earned her Juris Doctor degree from University of Maryland in 2011 where she served as president of her class. Portia also earned a Master of Law and Letters from the Pepperdine University School of Law. She was awarded a Bachelor's degree in Journalism and Pan African Studies from California State University, Northridge. She is committed to closing America's wealth gap for marginalized communities. In honor of our wintertime in our neck of the woods, we are focusing on different themes of making the most of long winter downtime in the Northern parts of the world. To start things off, we begin this series with introducing the concept of Slöjd (or Sloyd) which is a Swedish word that for many hundreds of years has referred to being self sufficient through the act of craft. Simple hand tools, simple techniques to build anything. Hear some interviews with several folks of the Scandinavian Slöjd tradition of woodworking and beyond to American, English & Japanese traditions as well."Slöjd is part of the self-sufficient household, how people survived before industrialization. Slöjd is the work method farmers used when they made tools for house building, farming and fishing, and objects for their household needs. For thousands of years, the knowledge of the material has deepened, and the use of the tools has evolved along with the understanding of how function, composition and form combine to make objects strong and useful. The word slöjd derives from the word stem slög, which dates to the 9th century. Slög means ingenious, clever and artful. It reflects the farmers' struggle for survival and how it made them skilled in using the natural materials surrounding the farm: wood, flax, hide, fur, horn and me- tal. I have picked up a dialect expression from my home county, Västerbotten, that has become a personal motto. We say Int' oslög, “not uncrafty,” about a person who is handy and practical. Slöjd in its pure self-sufficient use is characterized by an individual using simple tools with great skill, a deep knowledge of raw materials, and the ability to solve functional problems. The resulting objects are intended for the maker's personal use." - Jögge SundquistLearn more about the inspiring folks from this episode, watch the videos and read the show notes on this episode here >Hear about green woodworking for carving spoons, turning bowls and more from voices like Jögge Sundquist, Jarrod Dahl, Ben Law, Barn the Spoon, Robin Wood, Sylva Spoon & more…Enjoy and happy woodworking!- - -Disclaimer: This is another episode exploring different themes in Permaculture and related fields with audio clips, interviews & anything else we can find.
