Is AI the savior or the destroyer of journalism? As media outlets grapple with dwindling trust and audiences, could artificial intelligence be the key to revitalizing the industry, or is it the final nail in its coffin? In this episode of The Trending Communicator, host Dan Nestle sits down with seasoned journalist turned AI consultant, educator, trainer, and founder of the popular Media Copilot newsletter, Pete Pachal. Together, they dissect the complex relationships between communications professionals and journalists as media becomes more fractured and AI's advance continues. Pete shares his journey from engineering to journalism, recounting his experiences at influential digital media outlets like Mashable and Coindesk. As the conversation unfolds, Dan and Pete examine the current state of media, the challenges faced by both journalists and PR professionals and how AI is reshaping the entire landscape. Pete offers invaluable insights on how newsrooms and PR teams can adapt to this new reality, emphasizing the importance of transparency, ethical frameworks, and maintaining the human touch in an increasingly automated world. He also shares his predictions for the future of media and communications, painting a picture of an industry that's both challenged and empowered by AI. Whether you're a journalist, PR professional, or simply interested in the future of media, this episode provides a balanced and nuanced look at how AI is reshaping the way we create, consume, and distribute information. Don't miss this opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the opportunities and pitfalls that lie ahead in the brave new world of AI-assisted communications. Listen in and hear about... AI's transformative impact on media and journalism Challenges and opportunities for PR professionals in the AI era Evolving strategies for earning attention in a fragmented media landscape Ethical considerations of AI-generated content and transparency Innovative AI tools reshaping content creation and distribution The enduring value of human creativity and critical thinking in storytelling Balancing AI assistance with maintaining authentic voice and expertise Notable Quotes On the Evolution of Digital Media: "Mashable was trying to be kind of like the millennial version of CNN at some point. So really, you know, struck gold with its strategy, which very few people were doing at the time, in the late 2000s, early 2010s of going all in on social media." - Pete Pachal [07:47 → 08:09] On AI's Impact on Journalism: "AI is affecting everything with regard to media at every layer, like the distribution, the production, just the story ideas even. And that idea of doing something quick and easy and employing whether it's interns or junior level people to just fire out those posts, that's a job for a robot now." - Pete Pachal [12:52 → 13:11] On the Changing Media Landscape: "Media itself is on its own hero's journey and now they're going through these trials and tribulations and they need to pass through them to get to the other side where they will be welcomed with open arms and redeemed if they follow the cycle." - Dan Nestle [13:53 → 14:11] On the Role of AI in Journalism: "The quick, the quick application, I guess a statement I would say about applying AI to journalism is it's like super easy to abuse and harder to use." - Pete Pachal [16:42 → 17:07] On the Future of AI-Generated Content: "I don't know a single journalist now who doesn't at least use perplexity or something like it every now and then, at least. Right. And there's other ways to improve that. Chief among them is essentially using AI with your own data, whether it's your stories or in the case of say, a legal reporter, using it on all these sort of legal documents around a case, which is a relatively easy thing to set up." - Pete Pachal [17:28 → 17:54] On the Future of AI in Media: "I think there's actually a better reason to do this kind of thing. And I think that the reason other orgs may want to start doing this for basically stories they don't have people for but are still relevant to their beat or their area of expertise is to make sure their corpus of content includes those stories." - Pete Pachal [22:32 → 22:50] On the Importance of Human Touch in Writing: "Writing is thinking. And he's right. The act of writing is not separable from the storytelling phase of it. And I think every writer knows this. As you're writing a story and you're, you know, you're figuring out transitions and things, you're like, oh, right, I should say this or I should say that." - Pete Pachal [46:28 → 46:48] Resources and Links Dan Nestle Inquisitive Communications | Website The Trending Communicator | Website Communications Trends from Trending Communicators | Dan Nestle's Substack Dan Nestle | LinkedIn Dan Nestle | Twitter/X Pete Pachal Pete Pachal | LinkedIn The Media Copilot Website The Media Copilot | Substack AI for PR & Media Professionals - Course Pull to Open | Pete's Dr. Who Podcast Timestamped key moments from this episode (as generated by Fireflies.ai)
Over the last few years, at least since 2020, in the marketing and communications professions, remote work has become more of the norm than the exception. Connections between and among co-workers remain predominantly digital or virtual, and so many of us fitted out our home offices with comfy ergonomic chairs, standing desks, recording gear, balance boards, and all kinds of tchotchkes. Then, when the economy started to turn, and our jobs started to disappear, we figured, well, we've got the home setup, we've got the years of remote work experience, so starting our own "thing" wouldn't be so scary. But as it turns out, being alone can get pretty lonely. We benefit tremendously from interacting with peers and feeling like someone's got our back. We want people we can reach out to for information, mentorship, and support. It sounds like we want - and maybe need - community. Is community the future of work? In this episode of The Trending Communicator, host Dan Nestle sits down with strategic communications and PR consultant-turned-entrepreneur Ashley Dennison, the founder and CEO of CommsConsultants.com, to discuss the changing landscape of communications consulting and the power of community in the age of AI. Join Dan and Ashley as they navigate the world of independent communications consulting, examining the challenges and opportunities that come with this career path. From the loneliness of solo entrepreneurship to the strength found in professional communities, this episode offers a candid look at the realities of modern consulting work. Ashley shares her journey in creating CommsConsultants.com, a global directory of pre-vetted communications and marketing consultants. The conversation touches on the importance of specialization, admitting what you don't know, and the critical role of building relationships in the consulting world. The episode dives into the impact of AI on the communications industry, discussing the scramble to understand and adopt new technologies. Ashley and Dan examine the readiness of consultants to meet future challenges and the need for continuous learning in a rapidly changing field. A key focus of the discussion is the ongoing struggle to position strategic communications as a business imperative. Ashley offers a thought-provoking call to action for communications professionals to unite and demonstrate their value to C-suite executives. Whether you're a seasoned consultant or considering the leap into independent work, this episode provides valuable insights into the future of communications consulting. Don't miss this engaging conversation about community, technology, and the evolving nature of strategic communications. Listen in and hear about... Community as the future of work for communications consultants Challenges and opportunities in the evolving landscape of independent consulting The power of authenticity and imperfection in professional communication Balancing AI adoption with core communication skills in the consulting world Strategies for positioning oneself as a valuable resource in a competitive market The ongoing struggle to establish strategic communications as a business imperative Adapting to change and embracing curiosity in the face of technological advancements Notable Quotes On the Value of Consultants: "How could you possibly ever be short of client volume when there are so many opportunities out there?" - Ashley Dennison [04:14 → 04:21] On Networking and Karma: "I totally do that. And I am always 100% sure that at some point in the future, right, there will be a... I'm not gonna say a reward, right. But I will say that there will, there will be a, A karmic sense of goodness happening from that." - Dan Nestle [53:09 → 53:27] The Importance of Specialization: "If you want to commit to your path of specialty, where you truly are an expert, you have to at the same time be willing to say, and all of these other areas are not my expertise, but I know people who can do those things for you. Let me connect you." - Ashley Dennison [56:38 → 56:51] On the Future of Communications: "Until we come forward with a solution to that problem and we all stand behind it, I think that our, our profession and our value and our voice is going to shrink and shrink and shrink. Not to end on a sad note, but that's the call to action I would like to leave people with." - Ashley Dennison [1:11:09 → 1:11:33] The Indispensability of Communications Consultants: "The necessity, the indispensability of advisors, of trusted advisors who are courageous and who are able to put it, put connect dots, put everything together and convey, nay, communicate the ideas that will move and propel a business forward are absolutely golden for the future." - Dan Nestle [1:11:33 → 1:11:55] Resources and Links Dan Nestle Inquisitive Communications | Website The Trending Communicator | Website Communications Trends from Trending Communicators | Dan Nestle's Substack Dan Nestle | LinkedIn Dan Nestle | Twitter/X Ashley Dennison Ashley Dennison | LinkedIn CommsConsultants Website Timestamped key moments from this episode (as generated by Fireflies.ai)

On the thirty- third episode of ATFT, my friends philosopher pirate Daniel Carbonell- Sifontes and filmmaker/ video editor Max McBride join me on the third edition of the “fan- favorite” ATFT segment, #FilmTwitter Trends! Later in the episode, ATFT regular writer/ director Samy El- Kamel joins the conversation as a surprise guest! This episode is explicit with some sporadic spoilers. Towards the end of last year, there was this trend going around #FilmTwitter (with the platform now called X) where someone would post a decade and list their favorite film each year of that decade. Nearly every decade became a trend at this time and it became a fun thing to think about and then answer. I told Daniel about this trend which led to us three recording the 90s version back in March. Listen to Episode 17 to hear our 90s favorites! We enjoyed recording it so much that we decided to take on the next decade: the 2000s. It is the decade in which we grew up in so there are some nostalgic, core favorites from childhood along with more serious films we discovered when we got older. That being said, we have many similar favorites but also a lot of different picks. Both Daniel and Max have been guests on ATFT several times each but this is both of their second times on the “wide release” of this podcast! This episode was originally around 2 hours and 20 minutes so this conversation was definitely trimmed down. Daniel is currently in grad school in Denver and has long been an excellent photographer. Max is currently developing a short film and has a YouTube channel where he posts short films and documentaries as well as videos focused on his interests such as Dungeons and Dragons. He is expected to release an important video soon so be sure to subscribe to his channel by clicking here: https://www.youtube.com/@maxleevideo/featured. Also be sure to follow Daniel's photography Instagram @allmynegativesarehere. This episode was recorded on May 13, 2024. In this episode, Daniel, Max, and I go through our list of 2000s film favorites and discuss them briefly as well as talking about other 2000s films. Daniel and Max especially more often had similar 2000s favorites, connecting over big franchises like Spy Kids and Star Trek. One franchise we all continuously revel in discussing: Harry Potter. A few of the significant, widely well- recieved films discussed were The Pianist, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and There Will Be Blood. Some short tangents include whether we prefer watching films alone or with others, the optimal movie length (in which I roll my eyes), and celebrity crushes. Send me a Text Message!Daniel 11 is part of the last and longest vision that Daniel was given, or at least that he was given and recorded. But this episode is going to take a bit of a turn from Daniel 11 to the book of Revelation. Both Daniel and John are elderly men when they are given their visions of the end of times. And both Daniel and John are humble people of prayer. Prayer mattered deeply to both of them. So in this episode we're going to look at John's vision of a moment of multitudes of prayers coming before God. And what happens? All of heaven grows silent. Listen in on how much our prayers matter to heaven! And then answer the question, "What will you do today that has more potential for breakthrough in your life, than prayer?"
How many times have you heard that career paths in PR and Communications are full of options and opportunities? Maybe that's true when you're just getting started, but for many of us, as we progress in our careers, we start to notice fences and guardrails rising ever higher as the path itself becomes narrow and steep. What does it take to jump the fence or take it down? Or are we in a communications cage? In this episode of The Trending Communicator, host Dan Nestle connects with corporate communications executive Emily York, a communications veteran whose journey spans journalism, agency work, consulting, and senior leadership roles at global companies. Emily shares her experiences transitioning from a corporate role at Beam Suntory (now Suntory Global Spirits) to starting her own consultancy and ultimately leading global communications at executive search powerhouse Russell Reynolds Associates. Together, they discuss the challenges and opportunities that come with career transitions, the evolving nature of the communications profession, and the critical role of soft skills and strategic thinking in an AI-driven future. Emily and Dan discuss approaches and attitudes toward navigating career changes, the importance of staying curious and adaptable, and how to leverage relationships and trust to thrive in ambiguous environments. They also explore the impact of technology on the communications landscape and the need for communicators to stay ahead of trends, from AI to media consumption habits. Whether you're contemplating a career shift or seeking to enhance your strategic communication skills, this episode offers valuable insights and practical advice from two industry experts. Tune in to discover how to embrace change, build meaningful connections, and position yourself for success in the ever-evolving world of communications. Listen in and hear about... The episode kicks off with an open acknowledgment of the struggles that many entrepreneurs face, including feelings of loneliness, heightened anxiety, and creeping depression, as they navigate the pressures of business ownership. Jennifer candidly shares her personal experience of being akin to the relentless bunny from battery commercials, tirelessly going until she inevitably hits a wall. This metaphor serves as a stark reminder of the importance of recognizing personal limits and the need to recharge. The discussion broaches the surface-level impact of depression, touching on how feelings of hopelessness and lethargy can significantly hinder decision-making and business operations. On the seventeenth episode of ATFT, my friends philosopher pirate Daniel Carbonell- Sifontes and filmmaker/ video editor Max McBride join me on the second edition of the “fan- favorite” ATFT segment, #FilmTwitter Trends! This episode is explicit with some sporadic spoilers. Towards the end of last year, there was this trend going around #FilmTwitter (with the platform now called X) where someone would post a decade and list their favorite film each year of that decade. Nearly every decade became a trend at the time and it became a fun thing to think about and then answer. This episode does have some audio issues but the quality of the audio gets better later in the episode. I believe this episode is not only one of the best casual- format episodes of ATFT but one of the best episodes of this “wide release” so far so I hope despite the poor quality at times, you will all enjoy it! Both Daniel and Max have been guests on ATFT before but this is their debut on this "wide release" of the podcast! I told Daniel about this Twitter trend and asked which decades he'd be interested in doing an episode around and he said either the 70s or 90s (just as I had hoped!). The 90s was a great decade for cinema with some of the most original films since the 70s. Between the three of us, we have a very different interests in film which made for a wide range of films discussed from Reservoir Dogs to Fallen Angels to Romeo and Juliet. Daniel is an incredible photographer and has recently directed a few music videos for the band Velvet Meadow. Follow his photography Instagram account @allmynegativesarehere and subscribe to Max's YouTube channel by clicking here! Max recently posted a documentary short as well as an action- packed short film Pools. This episode was recorded on March 15, 2024. In this episode, Daniel, Max, and I go through our list of 90s film favorites and discuss them briefly as well as talking about other 90s films. Daniel's first pick, his favorite film of 1990, caught Max and I by surprise. Max, an anime fan, was very excited to share his 1997 pick. Two of my 90s favorites got an eye roll from Daniel but I stand by my choices! Some tangents include Pokémon video games, one- take films like 1917 and Birdman, and arguing over the quality of 1980s cinema. Later in the episode we have a quick debate over which Keanu Reeves franchise is better: The Matrix or John Wick. All this and more on the latest episode of All the Film Things! On this episode of Rightly Dividing, we have studied Daniel before, and we've studied Revelation before, but tonight we are merging the two books to see if we can make a single book out of what we read there. Guess what? We can get pretty close to accomplishing that due to the complementary and overlapping nature of the two books. Daniel was a man in the dispersion, John was a man in exile. Daniel was given visions and a visitation from angels, John was taken up of the Spirit and shown visions. Both Daniel and John lived under the rule of men who qualify as types of Antichrist. Both men were supernaturally protected as they ministered. Both men witnessed end times events that are still future as you read this, and both men prophesied of the Jews in the Tribulation. Daniel was told to seal up his book of prophecy until it was time, Revelation opens a 7-sealed book and says it is time. At the end of Revelation, a man who looks a whole lot like Daniel shows up for a “Bible Study” with John, and when they do the command to “Seal not the sayings of the prophecy of this book: for the time is at hand.” is given. Wild, crazy and off the charts? You better believe it. Tonight in Part #3, we examine the literal explosion of knowledge and the instantaneous travel we all take on a daily basis.
Many Christians, when attempting to navigate the the oftentimes murky waters of the book of Revelation, start out strong but soon get discouraged when trying to decode what they're reading. Fortunately, your King James Bible is ready to help you ‘crack the code' and it does that through the book of Daniel. Daniel is the key that unlocks Revelation, and it does so in spectacular fashion. This is Episode 24 of Season 3 and in it, Jec interviews Daniel Dauphin of Dauphin Horsemanship. He was also a 2022 Best Horse Practices Summit presenter. It's a great conversation, in part, because in their work Jec and Daniel are not seeing the same clients or the same horses. At all. Jec is in California and works with dressage and endurance riders. Daniel is in Louisiana and his students are mostly Western riders. They talk about pain – what it means to the horse and what it means to the horse owner. As it happens, I've written about pain and thought a lot about how we interpret or fail to interpret representations of pain in our animals. For generations, I feel like many owners did a pretty good job of ignoring signs of pain in their horses. Now, especially in quarters dominated by women, the trend is toward being overattentive around pain. Injections, supplements, even blankets and body massage appointments are all efforts to limit or avoid possible pain for our beloved equines. We can be guilty of killing horses with overcare, overkindness – that is, treating them with things when what they really need is movement and a herd, forage, and more movement. Both Daniel and Jec cite examples of horses' problems being solved with more movement. Motion is lotion. We will link to several articles on Horse Head and Best Horse Practices. There's an article on the grimace scale, an attempt by a team of international researchers to delineate pain through facial expressions. And there is an article about components of pain for us humans – like anticipation, distraction, and how pain becomes chronic. Our title sponsor is Lucerne Farms, producers of quality forage feeds. Forage is chopped, packaged hay. Sometimes it's alfalfa, sometimes timothy, sometimes blended, and sometimes with a touch of molasses. Always scrumptious. After hay and grass, it's pretty much the best alternative and a great way to supplement your winter feeding. Check them out here or at your local feed store. I imagine that you have reactions around this interview and the points Jec and Daniel hit upon and I would be happy to hear them. It just so happens that I have been thinking a lot about how different people, with different backgrounds, effect change for horses. Daniel brought up the legislation around soring and how, because of the crafted language, it had the potential to bring into question every aspect of horse keeping – right down to whether or not we should be riding. This spring, here in Colorado, we had a state legislative effort around horse slaughter. You might be thinking – horse slaughter is bad, any legislation around horse slaughter is a good thing. But I read the legislation. It was absurd and had the potential, I think, to have the opposite impact that the authors intended. More suffering, instead of less. Consider the horse Daniel inherited as a total loss, after spending years isolated and in a stall. And how his stiffles healed with turnout. I was thinking about this on my drive to town, during which I drive past a horse, who has been wearing a blanket the entire winter. That horse has had a blanket on since November, in zero degrees and on this day, 50 degrees and sunny. Its human, I'm sure, feels she's doing good. But I don't know. I felt really bad for this horse. Certainly, I think, we need to acquire and use as much knowledge around horse behavior, horse anatomy, horse physiology to take care of them well. But we also need be extra mindful of killing them with kindness. Overfeeding, overindulging, and basically replacing their simple needs with our more complicated, material, and immediate-gratification oriented mindsets. Read more about the Care Continuum. It's remarkable when you see a fatherless child grow up to be a successful adult-- reaching great heights and achieving life's accomplishments. In this episode, Daniel and Keitoh get vulnerable with the Winners. Both Daniel and Keitoh grew up without their fathers at home. At age 13, Daniel's father abandoned him and his mother. And at 10 years old, Keitoh's dad passed away due to health complications. Without their fathers, their lives could have easily taken a turn for the worst; far from where it is today. Not only that, they talk about the positive impact the absence of their fathers had on them growing up and still have on them to this day. How did they become Winners? The guys share how they navigated through life as an adolescent, and how they've become Winners in their own rite. They recall their mindsets growing up, reflect on how it changed them, and how they view fatherhood as men. In today's segment, we discuss six major parallels between the Book of Daniel and the Book of Revelation, regarding what Both Daniel the Prophet and John the Revelator both saw in regards to the future Tribulation and the rise of the Antichrist and the coming of the Lord.
Dan 11 The world admires the courageous resistance of the Ukrainian people and President Zelensky in the face of the brutal Russian invasion. Is it possible to mount an effective resistance without sinking to the same brutality as the invader? Both Daniel and Revelation are resistance literature, written to encourage God's people to resist evil while remaining faithful to him. Daniel 11 portrays human empire sweeping over God's faithful people. How do they resist?
Both Daniel & Aaron discuss a huge variety of topics such as the MLB lockout, how there is only one first ballot HOF MLB player, the current lockout issues & a whole lot more on this episode. Always the most brutal of takes!
Daniel Jahn and Kelly Edwards join Martin Friedman in our new release this week. You may remember Daniel and Kelly from their introduction podcasts they were featured on in the past. In this new episode Daniel and Kelly share their knowledge and thoughts on raising the next generation of young men. Both Daniel and Kelly coach young children, and are both fathers of their own children. You will hear about their experiences teaching young men communication, vulnerability, and integrity. You will also get to hear the three of them express their thoughts about the way men speak about women. Daniel sparks an amazing conversation about the language associated with putting women down, and the words that we have all been socialized to use when calling someone weak. Our New Man series is coming to an end very soon, and we are so happy we were able to have Daniel and Kelly on this new episode to offer a parent's perspective. We hope you enjoy listening, and stay Soul Focused!www.soulfocusedgroup.com

Stock video, how do you feel about it? For many creatives thoughts quickly jump to generic, smiling, corporate boardrooms with just the right pinch of racial and gender equity or sunlight filled family rooms, with children perfectly dressed in pastel colours unwrapping an adorably cute puppy on an indistinguishable birthday. You know the type and there is a certain stigma associated with stock video I'm sure you'll agree. But in 2021 and beyond, how is the stock or footage licensing industry changing? And what does that mean for video creatives like us? Well my friend that's what we're exploring today in episode 222. Daniel McCarthy is the co-founder and CEO of FM, the parent company behind licensing companies Filmsupply and Musicbed. After serving as an advertising creative director, he launched his own production-focused agency. Leading his team's day-to-day work, Daniel grew frustrated with the process of finding and clearing great music and footage. The problem: High-quality songs and clips were often tangled in red tape while the most readily available assets were subpar. He believes creatives shouldn't have to choose between these two underwhelming options. Daniel co-founded FM with the goal of representing the world's best music and footage in order to empower creatives shaping culture through their work in television, film, and advertising. Today, Filmsupply and Musicbed collaborate with top agencies, brands, production houses, and studios around the globe to help bring their visions to life. Both Daniel and FM alike place high value on art, creativity, and people. Support this podcast
Supercharge Your CRO With Octane AI Ecommerce is changing. Recent changes in data privacy, such as the upcoming iOS 15 update, mean that ecommerce store owners need to adapt quickly to keep up to date with their customers. Introducing Octane AI. The all-in-one platform for direct data collection and CRO via Shop Quiz, personalized Messenger and SMS automation, and Opt in tools. Octane AI is transforming the customer and merchant journey. Ben Parr is the President and Co-Founder of Octane AI. Thousands of Shopify and Shopify plus merchants use Octane AI to engage, convert, and retain customers through innovative data collection and a personalized shopping experience. We're delighted to hear Ben and our podcast host Daniel Budai discuss CRO, personalizing your customer journey and: ✔️ Octane AI's Origins ✔️ Octane AI's Key Features ✔️ Engaging Quizzes for your Ecommerce Store ✔️ Getting Attention to your Ecommerce Store Where did Octane AI Begin? Ben Co-Founded Octane AI in 2016. Initially, Octane AI was primarily concerned with Messenger chatbots. Five years down the line, Octane AI's main focus is now Zero Party Data. Ben maintains that Octane AI's founding principles remain the same: “Helping customers and brand owners communicate is at the core of everything we do.” Messenger Chatbots are still very important to Octane AI, but so are Shop Quizzes, personalized SMS automation, and omnichannel marketing. Like any digital entrepreneur, Ben is all about adaptability and evolution. What does Octane AI do? Octane AI does two main things: Collects Data Leverages Data Octane AI uses Zero Party Data. That is, it collects data directly from customers via Shop Quiz, Messenger, and SMS communication. Ben warns against relying on third-party data. You don't own third-party data, and it could be taken from you at any time. When you quiz customers on what products they're looking for, you engage them in brand communication and collect direct data. Octane AI then leverages this data to personalize the customer experience. Octane AI works perfectly with Klaviyo to segment your customers according to Octane AI's data collection. This allows you to run targeted marketing campaigns. Ben and Daniel agree that retaining customers is even more valuable than gaining customers. In Ben's experience, the lifetime value (LTV) of customers who take quizzes usually goes up anywhere between 10 - 50% depending on the brand. Shop Quiz Sounds Amazing - How do I Make My Questions Engaging? Both Daniel and Ben say: Keep it Simple. Your Shop Quiz doesn't need to be 10 - 15 questions long. Keep it short and sweet. Ben's advice is to imagine your ecommerce store as a physical store. When a customer walks in, what are they going to ask? If you own a shoe shop, for example, it's likely that your customers will ask about shoe size, width, material, or brands. So if you own an ecommerce shore store, it makes sense to quiz your customers on what shoe size, width, material, or brand they're looking for. It's really as simple as that! Just one question can make all the difference. Ben gives another example of an ecommerce pet store asking its site visitors, “Cat or Dog?”. Just that one question drastically streamlines the customer's journey towards conversion. Getting Attention to Your Ecommerce Store Ben has written an entire book about the science and psychology of capturing people's attention: Captivology. So if you want a deep dive into grabbing your customer's attention, we recommend checking it out! Unfortunately, there's no silver bullet for capturing attention. But Ben does have a couple of tips for us: ✔️ Know what attention stage you're at If you're just starting out in your ecommerce business, capturing attention is a different ballpark to someone who already has brand attention and wants to cast their net wider. If your aim is to attract new customers, your strategy will be different to the aim of capturing and keeping the attention of existing customers. Capturing attention will also vary according to different sub-sects of customers. That's why it's so important to segment your marketing strategy using detailed customer data. ✔️ Know your product Your marketing will vary according to your product and buyer persona. Beauty brands, for example, tend to really benefit from influencer marketing. If you're selling high-end furniture, on the other hand, your focus would be better honed in on SEO and online ads. Don't try to capture attention from everywhere. Know where you're going to get it first. So What's Next for Octane AI? Ben is always alert to new trends in ecommerce. He says it's not long before we see the end of 3rd party cookies. Octane AI is paving the way for Zero Party Data and innovative data collection and customer personalization tools. Octane AI is always evolving. On the 14th of July 2021, Octane AI announced a brand new feature: Conversational Pop-ups. These integrate with Octane AI's Shop Quiz tool to create an interactive pop-up that gathers additional customer data and recommends products. It's really no surprise that the Shopify Team voted Octane AI as the Best Store Front App. And that was before Conversational Pop-Ups! Connect with Ben on LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter; and visit Octane AI to supercharge your conversion rates. Follow Daniel Budai: Daniel's LinkedIn Daniel's Facebook
Daniel and Revelation are almost companion books. Both Daniel and the Apostle John were shown great visions of the future end times by God. Stunning and detailed descriptions that includes messages from Angels. Both Daniel and Revelation are to be read and can be generally understood but much is still veiled in mystery. If it were not, then it would not be God's books. But Daniel chapter nine is clearly understood and we reference Seventy weeks. Seven Is the Bible number for completeness and God's completes the history of Israel with 7 times 70. Jesus said to forgive a person not seven times but seventy times seven. Meaning there is complete forgiveness in the seventy times seven. God is seeking to completely forgive and redeem Israel from all of their past sins with their seventy times Seven!

Daniel Bogue – NZSIA examiner, Technical team member, President of the NZSIA The Joys of modern technology allowed me to catch up with Daniel from the other side of the globe as he embarks on the ski season in New Zealand. It had been far too long since we caught up - but always a pleasure! Daniel started skiing at the age of 11 on a school ski trip. He loved it so much he convinced his family that it was a sport they should all do. Since then its been all downhill. (Skiing Downhill) . Both Daniel and his brother carried on to become NZSIA examiners and eventually trained there parents to become instructors through the Rookie Academy at Treble Cone. Once Daniel completed his degree he set off skiing in Japan, Canada the United states and more recently China. Daniel will always call Wanaka home and rates Treble Cone as one of his favorite mountains to ski and train on. Daniel still works for the Rookie academy and is an active examiner. Having two small children means he doesn't get to ski in the Northern Hemisphere as much as he would like but he loves the fact that 3 generations of Bogues get to ski together in NZ all because of a School ski trip. Daniel traveled to Bulgaria as part of the NZSIA Interski team and has been elected to President of the Board of the NZSIA. www.rookieacademy.com www.nzsia.org www.Atomic.com ____ Many thanks to our Sponsor Wolf and Grizzly. https://www.wolfandgrizzly.com If you want to get out and enjoy all the best our natural world has to offer – check out the cooking options from Wolf and Grizzly. Poverty and socioeconomic status impacts school readiness, language development, and the important early intervention of learning disabilities. During the Covid-19 pandemic, these already underserved communities were even more drastically impacted by the inequities of our special education system. There are a lot of layers to this overwhelming problem, but through the work of organizations like the Special Needs Network in LA and individuals like Daniel Mendoza and Marcos Aguilar, we are spreading awareness and access to services otherwise difficult to obtain. In this episode, Daniel and Marcos explain how children with special needs are impacted by inequities in their community. Daniel is the Clinical Director for the Special Needs Network's Applied Behavior Program and shares in this episode how some children with Autism are not given the services they need in underserved communities. Marcos is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst and Assistant Clinical Director at Special Needs Network and together with their behavioral health team, provides education and resources to families, children, and adults. They have created multiple “access points” to reach as many families in need as they can. We could have multiple episodes on this important topic, but their mission is clear. The Special Needs Network is doing tremendous work in their community in raising public awareness of developmental disabilities and impacting public policy. I'm honored to have Daniel and Marcos on the show today to further spread this awareness. Show Notes: [1:59] - Dr. Wilson shares her experience with the Special Needs Network at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic. [2:57] - Daniel explains the beginning of the Special Needs Network and how it has grown since 2005. [4:22] - There has been an increased awareness regarding the inequities in education, particularly special education. [5:30] - The programs that Special Needs Network offer were crucial during Covid-19. Daniel describes the experience for many parents and families. [6:28] - During the pandemic, Special Needs Network was able to help fill the gap in services when services couldn't continue in school. [7:29] - Daniel explains what ABA therapy is and the benefits of it for anyone but especially those with Autism. [9:01] - Marcos further explains ABA therapy for those with Autism. Some behaviors are due to an inability to effectively communicate. [10:03] - The delay in services for children with Autism can be up to 2 years in underserved communities. [11:22] - Daniel points out that in underserved communities, parent concerns are not taken as seriously. Parents tend to give up in their efforts to find support and early intervention. [12:17] - The lack of understanding and access to services has caused some children to not obtain therapy in some cases till they are teenagers. [13:43] - Dr. Wilson shares that she has known of families crossing state lines to seek services in other states. This is inequitable as services should be available everywhere. [14:22] - The United States is “late to the game” on services for Autism. [15:18] - Underserved communities also experience inequities in other services, even healthcare. [16:40] - Daniel describes how the Special Needs Network approaches this overwhelming work. [17:42] - What is “boots on the ground”? [19:09] - Special Needs Network also attracts people with resources and supplies like backpacks and food during special events. They also partner with larger corporations to reach more families. [20:50] - All the different access points for Special Needs Network, they've created an infrastructure in their community, including pediatricians. [22:00] - Special Needs Network also partners with schools and is working on referral systems for school psychologists and another entry point for students. [24:07] - Parent support is also vital as having a child with special needs can be very isolating and have a negative stigma. [25:08] - Marcos emphasizes the importance of collaboration with families. [26:27] - When the team works together as a unit, that is when you see the child “take off.” [27:27] - Marcos tells families that he doesn't want to be the best to work with their child, but wants to be able to access work for their child and connect them to the right programs. [28:43] - Parents connecting with each other creates word of mouth for Special Needs Network but also builds a community of support for families with similar challenges. [31:26] - Parent mentoring also helps with the negative stigma of having a child with special needs. It creates hope for parents who are discouraged. [32:31] - Society has two different models of looking at developmental disabilities. Daniel explains them both. [34:24] - There needs to be societal change in this area of acceptance. [37:29] - Dr. Wilson invited Daniel and Marcos to speak at a town hall coming up. [38:37] - Daniel describes a new facility opening in December of this year and what they will be able to offer in one building. About Our Guests and Special Needs Network: Daniel Mendoza is the Clinical Director for Special Needs Network's Applied Behavior Analysis program, and Marcos Aguilar is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst and Assistant Clinical Director at Special Needs Network, Inc. Both Daniel and Marcos are part of an interdisciplinary behavioral health team that includes behavioral analysts, clinical psychologists, social workers, and pediatricians, providing behavioral health treatment to children diagnosed with autism. Special Needs Network, Inc. is a community-based non-profit organization dedicated to addressing the needs of underserved families struggling with raising a child with developmental disabilities. Their mission is to raise public awareness of developmental disabilities and to impact public policy, while providing education and resources to families, children and adults. SNN serves as a link between under-served communities and mainstream developmental disability organizations and governmental institutions, which often fail to address issues specific to these communities. SNN firmly believes that dignity, hope and opportunity are the birthright of all children. Founded in 2005, Special Needs Network, Inc. (SNN) grew out of the struggles of Areva D. Martin, Esq. after her son Marty was diagnosed with autism at the age of 2. After finding it incredibly difficult to access services for Marty, Ms. Martin became aware of the enormous challenges faced by families affected by developmental disabilities in underserved communities – in particular, the neighborhood of South Los Angeles. A Harvard-trained attorney, Ms. Martin used her entrepreneurial and legal skills, as well as her own experiences navigating the complex system of care, to create a parent-centered organization with a mission to help the communities in need through four resolutions:1. Reduce the waiting period for families to have their children diagnosed;2. Bring education, resources, and services directly to the community;3. Provide unique learning opportunities for children and young adults with developmental disabilities; and4. Forge an action-based coalition of families empowered to self-advocate at all levels of government. Both Daniel and the Apostle John share a common experience - the unveiling of Jesus can be overwhelming to the human frame. Receiving the love of God requires a particular posture and many don't assume that posture until their human frame is overwhelmed. Daniel (and the rest of us) can experience God's love through His words, actions, and presence.

Daniel Harris was a 29-year-old man living in Charlotte, North Carolina in August of 2016. Daniel, along with his entire family, are deaf and rely on American Sign Language to communicate. On August 23rd Daniel was speeding home on the I485 when he was pursued by State Trooper Jermaine Justus Saunders. Officer Saunders attempted many times to pull Daniel over, but a high speed car chase ensued. Daniel arrived at his house and got out of his car; within seconds he would be killed by a single gunshot from Officer Saunders. Both Daniel and Officer Saunders were misunderstood and this led to the controversial issues relating to police interactions with the deaf community. Some would argue that the fatal shot was fired too quickly, whereas others would say that Officer Saunders was justified in his decision to use deadly force. Join me as I navigate this complicated case and look at both sides of the story from beginning to end. Both Daniel and I are enthusiasts of the werewolf subgenre in horror, and so this is an episode that hit our sweet spots. It provides an authentic-feeling glimpse into Native American culture, with an engaging story that is paced very well. And it features Michael Horse in the role of a Native American law enforcement official. It also has one pretty decent transformation scene, considering this was a prime time sci-fi TV series and not a feature film with effects by Rick Baker or Rob Bottin. So, all things considered, they pulled it off very acceptably. It's just a fun, enjoyable episode overall. Daniel and I have a bunch of good things to say about it. Dig in. What does it feel like when someone truly listens, and receives, you with their unconditional self? Your entire body relaxes and your cares drip away. It's the unicorn variety of listening where you know in your heart the person doesn't need a list of accomplishments in order to view you as 'worthy of their time'.If you haven't experienced being listened to in this way before, imagine it for just a moment. What would that FEEL like for you in your body? When I first heard Daniel speak, I found myself listening in a way I don't usually. I leaned in closer (to the computer screen). I didn't think about what I would say in response or even whether I agreed or disagreed with what he was saying. None of that seemed to matter at that moment in time while I was listening.I simply followed the melodic cadence of this voice. There's a catharsis of the art of listening. I was transported to a realm where love and hate were one and the same and wholeness was the flavor of the century. Authentic, unconditionally, listening truly is an art form; we all could use some practice. Before you read these show notes, I ask you to listen to the podcast first with a focus on expanding your awareness of how you feel. How does the energy feel in your body when you drop all pretenses and just listen? What happens inside when you move out of your mental space and into your energy body? Both Daniel and I would love to know what came up for you when you listened to this podcast. Leave us a comment. We will listen, unconditionally. Daniel walked away from the opportunity to run a multi-billion dollar company to hitchhike around the world to find happiness and inner peace, studied 5 years in a seminary, and left 1 day before being ordained. He's also lived as a monk in a monastery for 10 years. Daniel led the growth of hay house from 3 million a year in sales to 100 million a year in sales. How to Design Your Shopify Store to Make It High-Converting In this episode of The Ecom Show hosted by our own Daniel Budai, we get a chance to learn from another master of retention marketing in the ecommerce world! Blended Commerce co-founder and CEO Adam Pearce tells us of his journey, bouncing around between management, consultant, and even teaching jobs before realizing he was interested in ecommerce (and pretty great at figuring it out too!). Both ecommerce shop owners and marketers can learn a whole lot from Daniel and Adam this episode, with great topics like: ✔️ The best Shopify apps ✔️ Expert design tips for ecommerce stores ✔️ Beautiful aesthetics vs. conversion rates ✔️ Latest Shopify design trends ✔️ When you should consult a design expert The Tools Experts Trust Every great marketer has their trusted apps, and Adam is no exception. He mentions Klaviyo taking the crown from Mailchimp a few years back to become one of the very best apps you can use. It does much more than set up email campaigns, essentially giving business owners complete control over their valuable data! Recharge is another prominent app, great for recurring purchases and subscriptions. Octane AI is an exciting quiz app for ecommerce shops to personalize the experience and pitch specific products to shoppers. At the same time, Reviews.io is the perfect way to get user-generated video reviews, which can boost your sales! Three Crucial Design Tips What Adam and Blend Commerce can be pretty complicated at times, but he gave us a few simple tips for all businesses to utilize. While getting started, he recommends having a large budget for product photos and videos, as quality videos and 360-degree photos can up your conversion rate by 70%! Being consistent with color, shapes, fonts, and photos goes a long way to build trust with prospective customers. Having your “Call to Action” prominently displayed at the top of the landing page is more effective than a large, flashy hero image or text. Be sure to put social proof, mentions of free shipping, and other vital information close to the CTA to make a choice even easier. Beauty Does Not Equal Sales If it were just about making beautiful ecommerce landing pages, it would be a piece of cake for Adam and his agency. But he says knowing your audience is the most critical part of owning an ecommerce brand. Some of the top-performing pages are quite ugly, while some of the sleekest, futuristic designs yield hardly any sales! Both Daniel and Adam mention websites catered towards older crowds needing to be less flashy, more informational, and less distracting. In contrast, sites catered towards younger demographics can go with more aesthetic designs. “Make it beautiful for the type of people you want to attract!” Ecommerce Trends of 2020 Ecommerce is exploding right now, with 54% of traffic attributed to new shoppers since COVID-19 started. Although the traffic was once evenly distributed between desktop and mobile users, Adam says that around 80% of traffic comes from mobile these days. People are also prioritizing web speed more lately, with studies showing that improving your loading speed by just 1 second can net you 7% higher conversion rates! There has even been an increase in Shopify stores with digital products as well. Do it Yourself or Ask an Expert? Lots of the stuff Blended Commerce does for their clients, you can also do for yourself. Adam says, don't worry about hiring someone when you have less than 1000 visitors per month because there simply isn't enough data to sift through and come to a conclusion. You can use design templates, Google Analytics, Hotjar (a helpful heatmap to analyze your site), and more before consulting an expert. It is a lot more useful to tell them precisely what you want rather than saying, “make my shop beautiful, please.” Follow Daniel Budai: Daniel's LinkedIn Daniel's Facebook Follow Adam: Adam's LinkedIn Adam's website Adam's podcast
Scenario:Its morning again in America….Wake up America…morning’s overI was asleep before…that’s how we let it happenThere was a crisis…They blamed terrorists and suspended the constitution…we didn’t wake up then eitherNow I’m awake…----------------------------Those aren’t my words. Those are the words from a superbowl ad that ran last yearAn ad for a story that takes place….in an age of rampant pornography, increasing violence against women, declining morals in America, environmental disaster and decay…Until finally the religious right – a group of Christians takes control of the US Government…it becomes a totalitarian theocracy….and bibles are banned and morality is legislated and forced upon all citizens. It’s a series based on Margaret Atwood’s book – The Handmaids Tale. When the leading churches of the United States, uniting upon such points of doctrine as are held by them in common, shall influence the state to enforce their decrees and to sustain their institutions, then Protestant America will have formed an image of the Roman hierarchy, and the infliction of civil penalties upon dissenters will inevitably result.... -= Ellen White– {LDE 131.1}The “image to the beast” represents that form of apostate Protestantism which will be developed when the Protestant churches shall seek the aid of the civil power for the enforcement of their dogmas. The “mark of the beast” still remains to be defined. {GC 445.2}Tale or Truth? The American dream - why is that? Hunted becomes the Hunter – Persecuted becomes the persecutorPersecution of native Americans, of the Japanese, of African Americans I BELIEVE AMERICA….IS THE GREATEST COUNTRY IN HISTORYAmerica’s future ----how we got here. Empires have ruled the world for thousands of years. as providence saw fit they rose and fall and most often their demise was related with the removal of the freedom of conscience. We can see it in Egypt, Babylon, Greece, Rome…then that moment came when the babe in a manger - you know the one we count time by - i.e. BC and AD? So he comes along and inserts a revolutionary idea that man needs no intermediary to connect with Divinity.Paganism - ie nature worship was the dominant force throughout history.Constantine…. and Romecompromise was the solution. He melds religion and government and the seed of the papacy was born. The papacy would rule the world for 1260 years - well that was according to the prophecy anyway—and in 538 we find it roots and in 1798 we find its fruit - the French Revolution. The Papal Empire had built itself off of persecution, legislating morality, limiting freedom of speech and conscience and especially perverting the teaching of Jesus.Ok so what does this have to do with America? One author put it like this - Once people hated God so much because they thought the papacy was what god was like since the leader of the system claimed to be god on earth - eventually people had enough, they had nothing left to lose - so in the streets of France - they lost it. And as men and women were fleeing the persecution and corruption of the old world, they were doing all they could to get to the stores of America. In the last centuries of the dark ages - think about that - we literally label a time when the religious right got in bed with the government… as the dark ages. And to put the cherry on top - the Jesus in the book of revelation literally called the church a harlot for cheating on him with the empire. Then he says in Revelation 13 - Lucifer. Himself gave them his power and throne. So people are fleeing the old world and into the new - for one thing - I want freedom. I want to worship as I want to. I want to work and reap. The fruit of my labor. Was America perfect? No. But the prophecy foretold of that too. Revelation 13 - is where we find the prophecy of America. Two world powers are symbolized in Revelation chapter 13. Before we look at the second we need to understand and identify the first power? This kingdom would claim to be god and claim to have the power to forgive sins – both of the definitions of blasphemy. It would rule the world for 1260 years….In 1798, French General Berthier inflicted a deadly wound upon the papacy when he took the pope captive. Another Nation would arise Next :“I saw another beast coming up out of the earth, and he had two horns like a lamb and spoke like a dragon” (Revelation 13:11).Prophecy predicted that America would arise from a sparsely settled area. The papal captivity mentioned in verse 10 took place in 1798, and the new power (verse 11) was seen emerging at that time. The United States declared its independence in 1776, voted the Constitution in 1787, adopted the Bill of Rights in 1791, and was clearly recognized as a world power by 1798. The timing obviously fits America. No other power could possibly qualify.4. What is the significance of the beast “coming up out of the earth”? Answer: This nation arises "out of the earth" instead of out of the water as did the other nations mentioned in Daniel and Revelation. We know from Revelation that water symbolizes areas of the world that have a large population. "The waters which thou sawest, where the whore sitteth, are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues." Revelation 17:15. Therefore, the earth represents the opposite. It means that this new nation would arise in an area of the world that had been virtually unpopulated before the late 1700s. It could not arise among the crowded and struggling nations of the Old World. It had to come up in a sparsely populated continent. 5. What is symbolized by its two lamb-like horns and absence of crowns? Answer: Horns represent kings and kingdoms or governments (Daniel 7:24; 8:21). In this case, they represent the United States’ two governing principles: civil and religious liberty. These two principles have also been labeled “republicanism” (a government without a king) and “Protestantism” (a church without a pope). Other nations since ancient times had taxed people to support a state religion. Most had also oppressed religious dissidents. But the United States established something entirely new: freedom to worship without government interference. Absence of crowns signifies a republican form of government, rather than a monarchy. Lamb-like horns denote an innocent, young, non-oppressive, peace-loving, and spiritual nation. (Jesus is referred to as a lamb 28 times in Revelation.)6. What does Revelation 13:11 mean when it says the United States will speak “like a dragon”?Characteristics and behavior of a dragon – Revelation 12:9 – Lucifer is the DragonWhat are characteristics of Jesus – the lamb? What is the opposite?Legend of Dragons eating Lambs…7. What specifically will the United States do that will cause it to speak as a dragon? A. “Exercises all the authority of the first beast” (Revelation 13:12) The United States will become a persecuting power that will force people to go against their conscience, as did papal Rome—which is portrayed in the first half of Revelation chapter 13.B. “Causes (forces) the earth and those who dwell in it to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed” (Revelation 13:12).Signs of the Times May 6, 1897, “FORCE is the LAST result of every FALSE religion.”The United States will lead the nations of the world in forcing allegiance to the papal antichrist. The issue is always worship. Who will you worship and obey? Will it be Christ, your Creator and Redeemer, or antichrist? Every soul on earth will finally worship one or the other. Satan’s approach will appear to be deeply spiritual, and incredible miracles will be seen (Revelation 13:13, 14)—which will deceive billions (Revelation 13:3). Those who refuse to join this movement will be considered divisive, stubborn, radical, and unpatriotic. Jesus labeled Protestant America of the end time a “false prophet” (Revelation 19:20; 20:10),“I have told you before it comes, that when it does come to pass, you may believe” (John 14:29).C. “Telling those who dwell on the earth to make an image to the beast who was wounded by the sword and lived” (Revelation 13:14). The United States will make an image to the beast by legislating religious practice. It will pass laws requiring worship and force people to either obey them or face death. This action is a copy—or “image”—of the church-state form of government the papacy ruled with at the height of her power during the Middle Ages, when millions were slain for their faith. The United States will combine civil government and apostate Protestantism in a “marriage” that will support the papacy. It will then influence all the nations of the world to follow her example. Thus, the papacy will gain worldwide support.D. “And cause as many as would not worship the image of the beast to be killed” (Revelation 13:15). The United States, as head of this international movement, will next influence the nations of the world to impose a death sentence upon all who refuse to worship the beast or his image. Another name for this worldwide coalition is “Babylon the Great.”8. Over what specific issues will force be utilized and the death sentence passed?“He was granted power to give breath to the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak and cause as many as would not worship the image of the beast to be killed. He causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads, and that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or the name of the beast, or the number of his name” (Revelation 13:15–17).Answer: The final points of contention will be worshiping and obeying the beast and receiving his mark—honoring Sunday as a false holy day versus worshiping and obeying Christ and receiving His mark by honoring the holy seventh-day Sabbath. (For details, see Study Guide 20.) When the issues become clear and people are forced to break the Sabbath or be killed, those who then choose Sunday will be, in essence, worshiping the beast. They will have chosen to obey the word of a creature, a man, instead of the word of their Creator, Jesus Christ. Here is the papacy’s own statement: “The church changed Sabbath to Sunday and all the world bows down and worships upon that day in silent obedience to the mandates of the Catholic Church” (Hartford Weekly Call, February 22, 1884).9. Could a government really control buying and selling?Answer: : During World War II, buying was controlled by requiring ration stamps for such items as sugar, tires, and fuel. Without these stamps, money was worthless. In this computerized age, a similar system would be easy to set up. For instance, unless you agreed to cooperate with the worldwide coalition, your Social Security Number could be entered into a database, showing that you are disqualified to make a purchase. No one knows precisely how all this will come about, but you canbe positive it will happen—because in Revelation 13:16, 17, God says it will. Two Emerging PowersRevelation chapter 13 is clear. Two superpowers will emerge in the end time: the United States of America and the papacy. The United States will support the papacy by leading a drive to force the people of the world to worship the beast power (papacy) and receive his mark or else face death. The next two questions will evaluate the strength of these two superpowers. The papacy is the strongest religio-political power on earth.11. How strong and influential is the United States today?Answer: The United States is regarded as the world’s most powerful military force and the world’s center of influence. Note the following:A. “In the key categories of power, the U.S. will remain dominant for the foreseeable future.” —Ian Bremmer, Time magazine, May 28, 2015B. “What ultimately makes the difference between war and peace ... is not good intentions, or strong words, or a grand coalition. It is the capability, credibility, and global reach of American hard power.” —Senator John McCain, November 15, 2014C. “The United States is and remains the one indispensable nation. That has been true for the century passed and it will be true for the century to come.” —President Barack Obama, May 28, 2014D. France’s then-foreign minister, Hubert Vérdine, told a Paris audience that he defined“the United States as a ‘hyperpower’ ... a country that is dominant or predominant inall categories.” —The New York Times, February 5, 199912. What other factors could help set the stage for a worldwide law to execute those who refuse to violate conscience? The scenes of Matthew 24 – Climate Disasters, Economic Hardship, Moral Decay, Corruption of the Christian ChurchA backlash against terrorism, lawlessness, immorality, permissiveness, injustice, poverty, ineffective political leaders, and many similar woes could easily precipitate a demand for strong, specific laws to be rigidly enforced.13. As world conditions worsen, what will Satan do to deceive the masses?“He performs great signs, so that he even makes fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men. And he deceives those who dwell on the earth by those signs which he was granted to do in the sight of the beast, telling those who dwell on the earth to make an image to the beast who was wounded by the sword and lived” (Revelation 13:13, 14).Answer: The United States will experience a counterfeit revival and will insist that religiouslaws be passed to force every person to participate (represented by “an image to the beast” in Revelation 13:14). People will be forced to disregard God’s holy seventh-day Sabbath and worship instead on the beast’s “holy” day—Sunday. Some will comply merely for social or economic reasons. World conditions will become so intolerable that a worldwide “back to God” movement, with all joining in worship and prayer on Sunday, will be presented as the only solution. Satan will deceive the world into believing that they must compromise Bible truth and keep Sunday holy. But in reality, obedience to and worship of the beast will indicate the refusal of most people to enter God’s kingdom. No wonder Jesus makes such an issue in Revelation over worshiping the beast and receiving his mark!14. While interest in the counterfeit revival heightens, what will be happening to the genuine worldwide revival sponsored by God’s end-time people? Answer: The Bible says the entire world will be “illuminated” with glory (Revelation 18:1). Every person on earth will be reached (Mark 16:15) with God’s end-time, three-point message of Revelation 14:6–14. God’s last-day church will grow with amazing speed as millions join God’s people and accept His offer of salvation by grace and faith in Jesus, which transforms them into His obedient servants. Many people and leaders from all countries of the world will refuse to worship the beast nor embrace his false teachings. Instead, they will worship and obey Jesus. They will then receive His holy Sabbath sign, or mark, in their foreheads (Revelation 7:2, 3), thus sealing them for eternity. (See Study Guide 20 for additional information on God’s seal.)Spiraling Growth Infuriates the Counterfeit MovementThis spiraling growth among God’s people will infuriate the counterfeit movement. Its leaders will become fully convinced that those who refuse to cooperate with the worldwide counterfeit revival are the cause of all the world’s woes (Daniel 11:44). They will disqualify them from buying and selling (Revelation 13:16, 17), but the Bible promises that food, water, and protection for God’s people will be sure (Isaiah 33:16; Psalm 34:7).As his crowning miracle, Satan will impersonate Jesus.15. In desperation, the U.S.-led coalition will decide to impose the death sentence on its enemies (Revelation 13:15). What does Revelation 13:13, 14, say its leaders will do to convince people that God is with them?Answer: They will work miracles—so convincing that everyone except God’s faithful end-time people will be persuaded (Matthew 24:24). Utilizing the spirits (fallen angels) of Satan (Revelation 16:13, 14), they will impersonate dead loved ones (Revelation 18:23) and probablyeven pose as Bible prophets and apostles. These lying (John 8:44) demonic spirits will doubtlessclaim that God has sent them to urge all to cooperate.16. How can we be safe from powerful end-time deceptions? Answer: A. Test every teaching by the Bible (2 Timothy 2:15; Acts 17:11; Isaiah 8:20).The Bible says, “The time is coming that whoever kills you will think that he offers God service” (John 16:2).4. As we study the prophecies of Daniel and Revelation, it seems apparent that the real enemy is always the devil. Is this true?Absolutely! Satan is always the real enemy. Satan works through earth’s leaders and nationsto hurt God’s people and thus bring heartache to Jesus and the Father. Satan is the one responsible for all evil. Let’s blame him and be careful how we judge people or organizations who hurt God’s people and church. They are sometimes totally unaware that they are harming anyone. But that is never true of Satan. He is always fully aware. He hurts God and His people intentionally. In its prophecies, the term beast is a symbol for a mighty nation. The proof is in Daniel 7, a chapter that parallels Revelation 13. Both Daniel 7 and Revelation 13 refer to beasts, ten horns, a boastful mouth speaking pompous words, and intense warfare against God’s people (compare Daniel 7:3-8, 21 with Revelation 13:1-7). Specifically, Daniel 7 describes four great beasts: a lion, a bear, a leopard, and a dragon-like creature. Embedded in the same chapter, an angelic interpreter confirmed: “The fourth beast shall be the fourth kingdom on earth” (Daniel 7:23).So, we can nail this down: According to Daniel 7—which parallels Revelation 13—a beast in Bible prophecy isn’t a computer or super-evil person, but a mighty kingdom or nation. That’s what the angel said. Historically, 98% of reputable Christian Bible commentaries have interpreted Daniel’s four beasts to represent the ancient nations of Babylon, Persia, Greece, and Rome. This is a fact.Out of the EarthBut there’s more. Revelation 13:11 continues: “I saw another beast coming up out of the earth.” Thus, John saw a great nation rising into power. From where? “Out of the earth,” the prophet predicted. By way of contrast, all four of the beasts in Daniel 7 “came up from the sea” (Daniel 7:3). What does “water” represent? Again, prophecy pinpoints a clear answer: multitudes of people. We know this because in a parallel prophecy another angel confirmed: “The waters which you saw, where the harlot sits, are peoples, multitudes, nations and tongues”(Revelation 17:15, italics added).True to the facts of history, ancient Babylon, Persia, Greece, and Rome all arose from the midst of a sea of peoples in Europe and the Middle East. Not so with the beast in Revelation 13:11. It comes from the earth. Thus, Revelation 13:11 points to a great nation rising out of a sparsely inhabited area.Like a Lamb“I saw another beast coming up out of the earth, and he had two horns like a lamb.” (Revelation 13:11). Each word is significant. The true Lamb of God is Jesus Christ who offered His life as a sacrifice for the sins of the world (see John 1:29; 3:16). “Like a lamb” indicates that this nation would have lamblike or Christian features. A lamb is a young animal, a baby sheep. This nation would at one time be youthful and new. Significantly, its “two horns” have no crowns like the first beast described in Revelation 13:2. Crowns represent kingly power. So, in Revelation 13:11 we see a new nation, with gentle, lamblike, Christian features, rising out of a sparsely inhabited area. It is led by a crown-less government, not ruled by kings. Are the pieces coming together yet?SuperpowerHere’s the shocker: Revelation 13 also reveals that this mysterious beast with two horns like a lamb would achieve superpower status near the end of time. Then it would degenerate and, during earth’s closing moments, lead out in the global enforcement of the mark of the beast. God’s Word reports: “He [the lamblike beast] causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads, that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark” (Revelation 13:16,17).These ominous verses parallel the last part of Revelation 13:11 which describes the final, tragic act of the lamblike beast: he “spoke like a dragon.” Let’s examine it closely. The beast “causes” all to have a mark—it compels or resorts to force. “All” emphasizes its global influence. Finally, the beast’s control of buying and selling clearly indicates that the world’s economy is involved.Putting the Pieces TogetherLet’s put all the pieces together:Revelation 13:11 pinpoints the rising of a great beast. In prophecy, a beast represents a great nation. This nation rises out of the earth, or wilderness area. This nation starts out young, like a baby lamb. This nation has lamblike, Christian characteristics. This nation has horns with no crowns—it has no kings. This nation achieves superpower status near the close of time. This nation influences the world’s economy. This nation finally speaks like a dragon. This nation finally enforces the mark of the beast.Be honest: How many nations on Planet Earth today fit all ten of these clear, unquestionable, Heaven-inspired details?Only one. ——————————
How to Properly Analyze the Analytics of Your Ecommerce Business Tune in as Budai Media founder Daniel chats with Rumen Dimitrov, an expert in Shopify Speed and Conversion Rate Optimization! It's clear right from the beginning that both Daniel and Rumen are passionate about numbers and data, and they discuss the biggest problems, areas of concern, and solutions for ecommerce store owners to focus on. Rumen says that lots of people would be shocked at how little even the largest and most successful ecommerce brands focus on their data, and with a little fine-tuning, you can iron out all the kinks and make a successful and profitable sales funnel for your store. You can also learn more about: ✔️ The Good Clicks vs. Bad Clicks concept ✔️ The difference between leading metrics and lagging metrics ✔️ Shopify Analytics vs Google Analytics ✔️ Trusting the sales funnel and not trying to convert early on ✔️ Listening to your customers Hit play and enjoy the full episode now! Are You Getting Quality Clicks? Daniel and Rumen talk about the misleading numbers associated with conversion rates, and how you can best figure out what is going on because every click is different. Simply measuring click-through rates alone will never help you gain insight into how your website is functioning, and if you are generating lots of attention but making no sales, you are getting “bad clicks”. You can see this as an opportunity and not a problem, however, and figure out where you are losing people during the process. Leading Metrics and Lagging Metrics Leading metrics are predictive tools used to calculate sales and conversion rates. Generally speaking, leading metrics look forward to future events, while lagging metrics are used to figure out what has already occurred. Understanding the relationship between your store's leading and lagging metrics is necessary for success if you want to smooth out any problems and set yourself up for higher conversion rates. What Data Analysis Tools Are Available? Shopify Analytics and Google Analytics are the two most commonly used tools on the market, and both offer their own features. Shopify's tool is easier for the average person to figure out, but lacks the tools, filters, and specific details that serious data-driven business owners want. Google, on the other hand, offers enhanced ecommerce tracking, but can sometimes be overwhelming for people. The sheer offering of tools, metrics, and other data on Google Analytics is why it reigns supreme in the online data marketplace. Let the Sales Funnel Do Its Job Another important tip you can glean from this episode is to not try and convert sales to early. Rumen mentions that it is much better to bring someone to your site, offer them something of value while collecting contact information, and slowly warming them up to your brand. First-time visitors rarely make a purchase, but building a rapport with them over time can be the best strategy for generating sales down the line. Let them warm up to you and trust your brand instead of pouncing right away! The Customer Knows Best It may seem obvious, but listening to the customer is actually the best thing you can do as a shop owner. Rumen discusses the many ways you can do that, like checking out customer service inquiries or offering a discount for helpful feedback. If you have a hypothesis that is based on data or customer feedback, test it! There is a science to optimizing your website shopping experience, and you can even observe friends or family members testing your website to note inconsistencies or bugs that can be avoided. Both Daniel and Rumen agree it's best to take the time now to optimize your website rather than waiting until mid-November because Q4 and the winter holidays are fast approaching! “You may find yourself fighting against God if you fail to realize as Paul did here that the whole of your past has had the hand of God in it . . . even with failure in the past,” said author Paul Little, speaking about the apostle Paul. “You didn’t take God by surprise when that happened. God loves you and me, and He has a purpose for good in all of the providential, sovereign working of His will in all of the details of our lives.” From a human perspective, Paul’s imprisonment indicated failure. Here we find him in chains, at the mercy of a powerful pagan empire. He could no longer pursue his missionary and church planting work (Rom. 15:20). But from God’s perspective, Paul continued to achieve success. Why? Opposition from the world was expected and signaled that he was on the right track. In prison, he was evangelizing his prison guards, his “captive audience”! This is why he could write: “What has happened to me has actually served to advance the gospel” (v. 12). Notice that Paul’s top prayer request was not his freedom. It was the same as always—opportunities to proclaim the gospel. The palace guard that was responsible for him probably consisted of several thousand soldiers (v. 13). They became his mission field! In addition, because of Paul’s example, other Christians grew bold about preaching the gospel (v. 14). How far did this gospel-first priority stretch? Quite far. Paul wrote that even people with sinful motives were acceptable to him, as long as the true gospel was proclaimed (vv. 15–18). He was not condoning such motivations, but rather keeping his priorities in the right order and rejoicing in the spread of the gospel. >> Both Daniel and Paul kept their priorities in the right order. How about you? Are your priorities fully biblical? If they need clarifying, consider writing out a personal mission or vision statement. Then discuss it with a friend or family member.
Today on Working Man, you get two for the price of one. Our guests on this episode are Daniel and Michael VanderHyde. Daniel and Michael are two of ten kids, and all six boys in their family followed in the footsteps of their dad and grandad by working in the trades. Both Daniel and Michael have their own companies: Daniel's is in heating, cooling, and plumbing, and Michael's is in construction. Today we learn about how a good tradesman needs also to be a good educator, why endurance is crucial to the good life, and why going into business for yourself means you're actually going into business for others.
On this special edition of The Six Five, hosts Patrick Moorhead and Daniel Newman examine the impact COVID-19 has had on events, major tech events to be specific, and best practices for digital events. Currently digital events haven’t been great. They haven’t necessarily evolved in the last few years, continuing taking a back seat to in-person events. But in the current situation that may end up lasting months, companies are realizing it’s time to make a change. It's clear that people don’t want hours of boring footage with no engagement. Nobody wants to be talked at for long periods of time and hopefully companies will start to realize this. So what can companies do to make sure they get information across and keep audiences engaged? Let’s examine it further. Style Matters It’s important that companies leverage video right now and that does not mean PowerPoint slides via video with a monotone voice. It should be dynamic with multiple cameras and multiple people. Stage your production, take your narrative to the next level — it will make a big difference. Google has always done a good job of this for their product announcements and developer events. They are the ones worth emulating now. Engagement is Different Now Zoom recently hosted an analyst day and according to Daniel, knocked it out of the park, when it came to engagement. He shared that they had giveaways and allowed attendees to ask questions. They forced participation without making it feel forced. They also respected that people were in different timezones and likely were attending through meal times. Zoom offered DoorDash codes so people could have “lunch” during the event as if they were in person. It’s small things like that that make a difference. Conversely, Patrick shared an experience that was not so stellar. The company requested that analysts turn off their own cameras. The issue with that is, people by nature, will get distracted. They will get up and go to the bathroom or start checking email. They’re not on camera so they don’t need to pay attention. Patrick emphasized that companies need to respect and understand the psychology about being at home. Bite-Sized Content Wins Companies are trying to compress 20 hours of content from the original event to 2 or 3 hours. It’s tough, but doable. Both Daniel and Patrick noted that companies need to be realistic about what people will want to consume. Now that we are in our homes, there’s other noise and distractions that can be tough to deal with during the day. Companies should produce a well-designed, well thought out, 4K multi-camera, multi-dimensional keynote that tells the most important items. It’s also wise to make it available on demand, so if an attendee didn't get something, they can watch it again or if they want to work late at night they can watch it then when it’s quiet and they have fewer distractions. Think boiled down and simplified. Daniel also noted that one-on-ones that were scheduled during events can and should still happen over video. A lot of people attend events for the face time. For the ability to connect with people who they have never met. Don’t eliminate that. With bite-sized content and one-on-ones attendees can get a lot of the same value as if they were there in person. Platforms and Security Matter As events move online, security and privacy are coming front and center. Daniel pointed out that platforms like Zoom are more consumer-focused and don’t have a lot of security compared to Webex or Microsoft platforms. For most cases it’s fine. Zoom is a great platform, but it’s something to be mindful of if you’re disclosing private, proprietary, or financial information. Patrick also noted that the size of the event might dictate the platform. YouTube and Twitch are good options for events that need to go out to thousands if not millions. Platforms like Zoom, Webex and Teams are limited in terms of scale. All are great platforms, but several things should be taken into consideration when planning your digital event. The key takeaways are make it dynamic, consumable and easy to engage with and you’ll be on the path to success. Over the next few months, Daniel and Patrick will be releasing more special editions of The Six Five with insights from executive all of the world on the current situation. Don’t miss out on any of the conversations that are headed your way, subscribe now. Disclaimer: This show is for information and entertainment purposes only. The Audit is F’d Up – Part Two Recap Written by Brandi Abbott This week’s episode picks up with a continuation of the audit and the case of a man named Daniel Green. Daniel Green was at a cookout on July 22nd, 1993 when he ran into his friend Larry Demery. Demery asked him if he wanted to come with him to New York to make a delivery, Daniel declined and Demery left the party alone. A few hours later he was back and freaking out. He asked for Daniel’s help and this time Daniel went with him. That same day, a man named James Jordon, the dad of Michael Jordan, attended the funeral of a friend in Wilmington, North Carolina. He headed home at 12:30 AM. It was about a two hour drive and he must have been tired because he pulled off of the highway to take a nap. On August 3rd 1993, a fisherman discovered a body in a remote swamp in South Carolina and it appeared the body had been in the swamp for about a week. On August 5th, the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department were notified that an abandoned and stripped Lexus, belonging to James Jordan had been found. His family hadn’t spoken to him since July 22nd but no one had filed a missing person’s report. On August 7th, the coroner in Marlboro County, South Carolina cremated the body, saving the jaw and hands for identification purposes and on August 13th the teeth were matched to James Jordon. Back on June 22nd, Demery didn’t admit to Daniel that what he needed help with was moving a body until they were back at his car. Damery told Daniel that he went to a hotel for a drug delivery, that the man he was delivering to tried to proposition him which led to a fight, and there was a shooting. James Jordan is the man who was shot. On August 15th 1993, Demery and Daniel were arrested for murder. They had ridden around in James Jordan’s car for three days. They made calls from his car phone, including to 1-900 sex numbers, and made home movies using James Jordan’s video camera which included Daniel wearing the championship ring and watch Michael Jordan had given his father. Both Daniel and Demery had pasts involving spending time in jail. The cops tried tactics to get them to turn on each other, including threatening them with the death penalty and it worked for Demery. Between the time Demery took his plea offer and his testimony, he changed the story on what happened that night but the plea offer stood. He testified that he and Daniel tried to rob James Jordan, and that Daniel shot him. Daniel was convicted of first degree felony murder and was sentenced to life in prison plus ten years. Daniel has maintained throughout that he was not involved with the robbery or murder, but his conviction was upheld by the North Carolina Court of Appeals in 1998 and the North Carolina Supreme Court in 1999. He filed a Motion for Appropriate Relief, known as an MAR, in 2000. His appointed council had done basically nothing, and in the 2008 after Daniel filed a supplemental MAR, the judge decreed his case would be reviewed and he would be appointed new council. In 2010 he asked for the NCCAI’s representation but they declined because he had recently been appointed new council. Daniel’s case was on the list of 230 cases impacted by the SBI’s shoddy practices. The same bloodstain reporting issues from Greg’s case were present in Daniel’s, and Chris Mumma agreed to take on his case in 2016. Chris reviewed his case and increasingly felt like he wasn’t involved in the robbery or murder and the NCCAI joined his co-council. The SBI complained that the audit done by Swecker and Wolfe looked at their old science through a modern science lens. This doesn’t really work, though, as the audit focused on their practices and reporting, or misreporting rather, not on their actual "science". Jennifer Elwell testified and dismissed the audit completely, though she admitted she only read parts of the report. She claimed that Swecker and Wolf didn’t understand forensic science, which seemed to be the common consensus across the SBI lab. Elwell refused to acknowledge that either she or the SBI were in error. In 2011, DA’s offices in NC had gone though about 150 cases from the report and claimed that these seemed okay as there was other strong evidence in every one of the cases. If that were true though, would this episode on Daniel Green even be happening? The phone calls made from James Jordan’s car was pointed at as the most important evidence by law enforcement including the sheriff, as it linked Daniel and Demery to the car. They failed to mention, however, that the second call made was to a drug dealer named Hubert Deese, the sheriff’s son. Demery and Deese were former coworkers who use to work about two miles from where the body was found in South Carolina. Deese was never interviewed by the police. He was interviewed by the prosecutors, but the defense was never aware. Daniel’s attorneys knew that the phone calls from the car were important to the prosecution’s case and that they were making a big deal out of them, but as far as they knew, the phone calls had only been to sex lines. The coroner noted in his report that there was no hole in the victim’s shirt to match the bullet hole in his chest, but law enforcement did not collect the shirt as evidence. The shirt was given to the funeral home and was buried due to an offensive oder, but was later exhumed and there actually was a bullet hole. Demery, who was considered the star witness, had been given that plea deal. He was originally sentence to life plus 20 years, but his deal made him eligible for parole in 2015. Priya couldn’t find anything saying whether or not he’d been released. The defense was never informed about the plea deal. The prosecution also didn’t read out the list of their potential witnesses to the jury to make sure there’d be no issues. One of the jurors had been accused of sexual misconduct by two of the witnesses. There was a witness who claimed Daniel had robbed him, but, it turned out, was just plain racist and said that all black people look alike. Elwell recanted her own testimony. She originally testified that she found James Jordan’s blood in his car, but her tests were all inconclusive. She admitted to withholding four inconclusive tests results that could have undermined the prosecutor’s theory of how James died. Daniel’s attorneys claim that the DA intentionally exaggerated Elwell’s findings and withheld her notes. The judge stated that withholding the results of the tests were a violation of his order. Right after Daniel was convicted, Elwell claimed she was ordered by a supervisor to destroy the only known samples of James Jordan’s blood, and that she had never before been asked to do that by a supervisor. The defense stated that they had never been informed the samples were destroyed. One of Daniel’s attorneys said the judge who sentenced Daniel to prison filed an affidavit stating that if Elwell has changed her opinion on the substance found in the car then her testimony at trial would constitute as false and misleading testimony on material fact. The blood evidence was the only physical evidence supporting Demery’s version of events and was critical in his conviction, making what was said earlier, about all of the 150 cases in the audit having other strong evidence, false. Despite all of this, Daniel is still in prison. In regards to the Derrick Allen case, which was covered last week, the local paper says the hearing for him touched on the issue of whether the SBI lab is independent or whether it tips the scales of justice in the courtroom in the favor of the prosecution and police. National Academy of Science issued a report in 2009 that said that crime labs should be independent and out from under the influence of prosecutors or police. So, of course, a former judge with no science background named Joe John was appointed interim director of the SBI Crime Lab by Attorney General Roy Cooper. After being there for a month, Joe John told the News and Observer that his impression was that the lab workers were not puppets of law enforcement. He said the analysts told him that they believed their customer was the criminal justice system as a whole. However, Elwell told the News and Observer that the SBI lab was drawing new guidelines to provide a stricter standard of customer service for their client, the state of North Carolina. Joe John did an internal investigation of the lab at the instruction of the DA’s office and found an additional 74 cases that were not included in the audit. These were found by hand reviewing files. Elwell was the analyst in 38 of those cases, and Deaver was the analyst in one. Deaver had 50 cases in the original audit and Elwell had 37. This new investigation brought her total to 75 mishandled cases. Spittle had 90 cases in the audit and 26 in this new investigation so he still holds the lead for worst lab analyst ever. Jess reminds us that the former SBI director, Robin Pendergraft, said that all of the problems at the SBI Crime Lab were just one guy. Defense attorneys were worried about the prosecutors reviewing the cases. Diane Savage said that there was no way for prosecutors to know how a jury would respond if it learned about improperly handled evidence. The News and Observer interviewed the Foreman of the jury in Kirk Turner’s case who said jurors were stunned by the SBI’s conduct. When asked about Gerald Thomas he said he was very conservative and a “law and order guy” but that he didn’t know what word to use but “fraud”. Prosecutors, however, felt that only by them looking though the cases would the result be true justice. DA Willoughby looked though all of the cases that went through his office, and they all appeared to be fine in his opinion. You may remember him from episode two wherein it was revealed he didn’t like the Innocence Inquiry Commission. He stated that the status of his cases would not change, and that most of them had confessed before there was any blood evidence. Willoughby also said that the science needed to be accepted as science whether it was unhelpful or not and that he didn’t think anyone was tipping the scales in the favor of the prosecutors. When the report of the independent investigation was released, Swecker said that the way the SBI lab reported impacted the decisions that were made. It could have resulted in situations where material favorable to the defendant was not disclosed. So there are those that may have had other evidence against them and with the addition of the blood evidence, they may have plead guilty in the face of all of that evidence. Chris Mumma said she didn’t think that there was anyone who would be surprised that the DAs felt that there was additional evidence of guilt on top of the blood evidence as that was why they were prosecuting in the first place, and that she wanted the defense to review those cases as well. SBI Greg McLeod acknowledged the concern raised by defense attorneys and urged prosecutors to complete their case files for review. Priya takes a moment to say how affected she’s been by these cases and names some of the people they’ve covered so far whose lives were ruined or impacted. For good news, F’d Up has been assured that every name on both lists have now been thoroughly looked into and justice has been pursued or is being pursued. After the initial audit Jennifer Elwell was suspended, though they don’t know if she was ever fired, due to her 37 cases in the initial audit. Deaver was suspended with pay, which I would just call a vacation. Attorney General Roy Cooper said that the SBI was going to make changes to its procedures and promised to send the cases flagged in the audit back to the courts for review. Changes were being made and many of the convicted were being released. However, getting out of prison isn’t as easy as you would think. Next week’s episode will take a look at the challenges the exonerated face.
Sorry this episode is out a week late. Both Daniel and I fell into a coma and were only able to be revived by the sweet, sweet tones of my Aunt Kathy’s saxophone solo. Glad she was in town this time. Also, neither of us wore green and she pinched us. That woke us up real quick. In this IBM sponsored episode of SMACTalk, Daniel Newman goes solo on hosting duties and leads a show focused on the future of automated work. Joining Daniel for the discussion was Mike Gilfix, Vice President of Digital Business Automation at IBM, a software that digitizes business operations and provides them with intelligence around digital labor to upscale their business. The show focused on how technology such as automation, AI, data and machine learning is going to make companies more successful and productive. During the show, Mike shared how IBM is making use of automation to improve their customer service touchpoint by changing the way they support their clients. They found that time to resolution of an issue is a main driver behind customer satisfaction. By leveraging automation technology interaction through chatbots and more, the process is simplified, creating a better customer experience. Mike also discussed some of the biggest trends he is seeing around the realm of automation for work. First, there is a revolution happening in businesses today around knowledge work. This revolution is creating tons of changes in the way technology supports what they do and the way they conduct their processes. Technology is helping knowledge workers be more effective and better at their tasks, helping them make decisions and freeing up more time for innovation. This trend is driving new things such as robotic process automation and decision management. It’s changing the way people work and is here to stay. Both Daniel and Mike shared how AI and automation technology will not steal jobs from employees but will instead likely create new opportunities. To get there, executives must think about the transition and how they can help employees make the leap into a new position with new responsibilities. Organizations will need to help change the culture of fear surrounding automation within their teams through communication. Mike made the point that we’re not anywhere near running out of work to do. In fact, most businesses have large laundry lists of work they want to complete and not enough people to do it. Automation will help businesses get done what they want to get done by creating capacity. One of the challenges for businesses is getting automation to work and minimizing failure. Mike discussed how most organizations don’t know where to start. They’re looking for the concept but have chosen basic technology to get them there. There is an opportunity to open up their eyes to the possibilities and see the true potential of automation. There’s also an opportunity here to help IT teams leverage technology to its full potential, aiding in operation changes within business. Mike emphasized that automation will benefit both sides of the spectrum in both revenue generation and cost basis. If businesses want to improve their reach with consistency, accuracy, personalization and transparency, these things require automation technology. The tech will enable a new level of scale in businesses. New revenue generating opportunities will follow suit, allowing these businesses to become more competitive in this technology-centric world. Today in our first ever on-location interview we caught up with Daniel Chen, an expat American and Steve Struyck a retired Dutchman who have both made the move to Penang, Malaysia. In this interview Daniel and Steven share their experiences of Penang, why they love living in Malaysia, and the cost of living they have in this country. It was great to do our own research into expat living while we were here. Accommodation is very affordable, with an average 2 -3 bedroom apartment going for around $400-$600 US per month. Food is extremely cheap, especially if you enjoy the local street markets and Penang itself is an interesting combination of cultures with Malay, Chinese and Indian all being integral to the community – and an ever growing number of Western expats flavoring the mix. Let’s let Daniel and Steven share their views: What I learned from Daniel and Steven: Malaysia offers a number of visa options for expats. In Daniels case he was able to get a 2 year renewable visa based on establishing his online business. Steven took advantage of the My Second Home visa option which gives him a ten year right of staying. Health treatment is first class. Both were happy with the treatment they had had there; in Daniels case his wife had given birth to two of their children there and not only was the health care good, but it was considerably cheaper than what it would have cost him in the US. Safety wasn’t a big issue for either of them. Crime does exist but is no worse than they would have experienced in their own home country. Property prices have increased considerably in the last few years. Both Daniel who rents and Steven who owns his own place had not had any trouble with the process of gaining their accommodation. Many properties are bought up by Chinese investors who leave them empty but this doesn’t seem to be putting too much pressure on rents. Daniel has paid the same amount for the last four years!
