Due to a technical problem with Apple Podcasts, we had to reissue this episode to ensure all subscribers received it.  Sorry if it’s a duplicate for some. For only the second time since launching the Lead From The Heart podcast eight years ago, Mark is opening a new season by speaking directly to you—without a guest. In 2018, Mark used the very first episode to introduce himself and his mission for the show. As this new season begins, he felt it was important to pause again, reflect, and—once more—clearly frame the context for what lies ahead. Over the past seven years, the podcast has featured 170 remarkable guests—CEOs, researchers, academics, and thinkers whose work helped shape and advance a leadership philosophy that was once considered unconventional. What began as a challenge to traditional management thinking has steadily become part of the mainstream conversation about leadership, performance, and culture. Today, many of Mark's ideas that once provoked debate—or even ridicule—are no longer contested. In this solo episode, Mark revisits why he created the podcast, what it set out to influence, and how the leadership landscape has changed since it began. As you'll hear, Season 8 marks an important inflection point. Mark introduces a new dimension he's adding to the show—one designed to keep the podcast vital and relevant while aligning it more closely with the moment leaders now find themselves in. Just before the new year, Mark published an article in Fast Company outlining why he believes employee well-being is poised to become a true business priority. In this episode, he expands on that thinking and explains how the podcast will support leaders navigating what comes next. The post Mark C. What does it really mean to be yourself at work without hiding, performing, or shrinking to fit expectations? In this Finding Brave conversation, we explore why authentic presence is not a soft skill or a personal indulgence, but a powerful leadership practice that builds trust, connection, and impact in today's fast-moving, emotionally complex workplaces.   Today's inspiring guest is Claude Silver, the world's first Chief Heart Officer at VaynerX, where she partners with CEO Gary Vaynerchuk to shape culture and leadership at scale. A sought-after speaker and the author of Be Yourself at Work: The Groundbreaking Power of Showing Up, Standing Out, and Leading from the Heart, Claude brings a deeply human lens to leadership that is grounded in emotional intelligence, courage, and self-awareness. Her work challenges the outdated belief that professionalism requires emotional distance or self-erasure. In this wide-ranging and deeply personal discussion, Claude shares formative stories from her own life that shaped her understanding of authentic presence. Together, Kathy and Claude unpack what authenticity looks like in real moments at work, from navigating difficult conversations to noticing the inner "song" that shapes how we show up. Claude breaks down her three emotional pillars, namely, emotional optimism, emotional bravery, and emotional efficiency, and explains how emotions can guide more grounded and courageous leadership. The episode also explores why leading with heart matters more than ever in an AI-driven, always-on world, and how taking up space, asking for what you need, and speaking honestly can transform both individual careers and workplace cultures. Listen in and consider what might shift if you gave yourself permission today to be fully seen and fully heard at work!   Key Highlights From This Episode: Introducing Claude Silver and what's missing from how we talk about authenticity. [00:59] Why being authentic is a privilege and the power of knowing yourself. [06:40] How early experiences with dyslexia shaped Claude's self-image and personal growth. [10:18] A pivotal Outward Bound moment that revealed the power of changing the "song" in your head. [13:56] [18:05] What authentic presence really looks like beyond theory and performative professionalism. [23:27] Claude's three pillars: emotional optimism, emotional bravery, and emotional efficiency. [30:47] Leading with heart in an AI-driven world that often feels rushed, disconnected, or dehumanizing. Why taking up space, speaking honestly, and being fully human changes work and culture. They care about people, they support people, they trust people, and they have their best interest at heart. I thought Mark made a really interesting point that we admire coaches who show that they love their players. But the conventional business leaders shy away from this type of heart-led leadership. Pediatrician and certified coach Jessie Mahoney discusses her article, "Why the future of medicine depends on leading from the heart." Drawing from her experience leading a workshop for women cardiologists, she explores the sacred irony of physicians who are experts in the heart yet rarely tend to their own. Jessie explains how medical culture, especially for women leaders, rewards overwork and expects self-sacrifice, leaving no room for reflection. The conversation introduces her core leadership philosophy, which is grounded in the biological principle of diastole—the essential rest phase of the heartbeat. Jessie argues that this sacred pause is not a luxury but a necessity for sustainable leadership. Listeners will learn how to shift from leading with intellect and control to leading with intention, authenticity, and a wisdom that comes from the body, ultimately fostering deeper connection, a steadier presence, and a healthier future for medicine. Many people think military leadership is as simple as giving orders and people just blindly following them. They couldn't be more mistaken.  While people will do what they're told, this “sir, yes, sir” style of leadership doesn't lead to high performance. It leads to a workforce that begrudgingly follows orders and passive aggressively does the bare minimum.  Getting people to take pride in their work and do it joyfully is a completely different ball game. It starts with a leadership style that's more heart-centered, shifting from being transactional to being relational. A caring leader enhances the performance of a team, and it's often as simple as learning the names of everyone in the organization.  How can leaders show people that they care? Why do commuting CEOs kill morale? What are the 3 facets of leading from the heart?  In this episode, retired Two-Star Admiral, my former colleague and aerospace and defense leader, Mike Manazir returns. He talks about his new book, “Learn How to Lead to Lead From the Heart” and why heart-led organizations outperform other companies.  Don't ever assume you know what the workforce is feeling or worried about until they tell you. -Mike Manazir     Things You'll Learn In This Episode  What actually drives military performance (it's not giving orders) Some people think leading is as easy as giving an order and people will follow it. Why is there a lot more to it? The most powerful thing a leader can do In any organization, recognition fuels performance. How can something as simple as a leader knowing everyone's names fire them up?  What dysfunctional workplaces have in common It's not hard to identify a workplace that's not being led well. What are the telltale signs of poor leadership?  Transactional leadership vs. leading from the heart In this era of remote work and private equity, we're starting to see CEOs who are okay with commuting. Why does this communicate a negative message to the workforce?      Guest Bio Mike Manazir is a graduate of Top Gun and commanded an F-14 squadron, the USS Nimitz aircraft carrier, and a Carrier Strike Group. Mike retired as a Two-Star Admiral and is now an executive with a Fortune 100 aerospace and defense company. He is the author of the new book, “Learn How to Lead to Lead From the Heart”. Mike mentors a leadership style based on heart and trust that champions inclusion. Mike believes if you have one or more people looking to you to show the way, you are a leader. The Thought Leader Revolution Podcast | 10X Your Impact, Your Income & Your Influence

“Your title does not give you the excuse to not connect with your employees.”There's a direct connection between your business success and how you lead and connect with your employees. It's a people first approach, which of course also applies to clients, but when staff eagerly follow a heart driven leader, your clients are sure to feel it.Heart leadership starts with looking inside at your own behaviors and patterns to consider if there's a better way. Take that one step further and make those who you lead feel seen, heard, and valued, and you've created an environment where people want to follow you as much as you want to lead them.Traycee Mayer is calling out people who call themselves leaders but who don't really play the part. She has an inherent interest in other human beings and bringing their talents to the surface. We chat about the detractors who constantly belittle the importance of compassion, care, empathy and vulnerability as important leadership skills, the impact of the last four years on leadership, why there's a place for hybrid working (and one size doesn't fit all), how the old system is looking to reclaim it's 'rightful place' and what leaders can do right now to combine leading from the heart with leading from the head. Oh, and the research is overwhelming - everything starts from the heart (if you're human of course).

A look back at the stand out quotes from this special episode replay on Mark Crowley's Lead From The Heart: “I have science that proves that the heart actually plays an enormous role in influencing human behavior.” [8:23] Mark explains the sentiment behind his original book and new revision Lead From The Heart.“The strength of a heart based leader is to see the potential in others and have the belief in them that they don't have in themselves.” [15:18] Marcel comments on the change that can happen in an employee when working with a leader who truly believes in them and sees what they don't see within themselves. “The heart and the mind are actually connected and the heart actually sends more communication to the mind than the other way around.” [28:25] Mark gets into the science behind his idea of leading from the heart, in which feelings genuinely influence our minds. He shares research from Heart Math that explains that when people are working in a positive, appreciated environment, they operate at their most optimal performance in what they call coherence. “Recognize that just because you have an opening, and someone comes who wants the job is the right fit for it.” [37:43] Mark explains the principle of Hiring from the Heart, having a high performing team is about using great discipline in how you hire.“You have to adapt to your employees; so you have to know what's important to them and know how to support them.” [39:50] Building a Relationship, Mark says, is not just spending time with your staff but getting to know their needs and wants and how you can help them be successful. That builds trust and provides a positive environment. “If you're a manager, you know something about what your employees do all day...  So teach them, coach them, give them your time.” [40:50] Giving Time is an investment that Mark shares as an important responsibility and commitment for leaders.“There is a significant gap between what people feel from their manager and what managers think they're doing for them.” [42:20] Mark encourages leaders to make real Recognition a priority for their employees.“Any act of kindness, coaching, validation, or appreciation… Is a micro manifestation of love.” [55:13] What does it mean to love your people? Mark wants leaders to know that these positive emotions are not the romantic version of love but real, authentic, professional ways to do business and lead. Mentioned in this episode:Mark C. We had bestselling author Mark C. Crowley on The Porch to talk about what it looks like to Lead From The Heart. Warning: Do not be confused by the word "heart". This is not a fluffy interview full of cozy stories. Mark brings research and years of leadership experience to the table to tell us the biological NEED for us to change the way we lead others. Here's some of what we covered: - We need to ask ourselves if we are willing to make life better for those we lead or if we want folks to experience the same hardship we did. -Human beings are hardwired to reciprocate - if you treat them well they want to treat you well. But it has to be genuine care and not a quid pro quo expectation. -We have to practice boundaries, not just talk about them. Consider those after-hours emails and texts that ruin your teammate's time away from the office. (It doesn't matter if you say "don't worry about it until Monday" it was still sent...) -Do a gut check on why you're talking about well-being at work. Is it a means to get more productivity out of employees? This is not helpful. Employees know when it's not genuine. The heart tells us. -We now know that the heart is not just a pump. It's the core of our humanity. It's sending information even ahead of what the brain is able to process. -The heart is connected to EVERYTHING, without it, everything else does not work. The future of leadership is not just an intellectual exercise, it's a spiritual and emotional one. We must align ourselves with human nature as we lead into the future. John C. Maxwell said it best: "Everything rises and falls on leadership.Everything in this statement above is an exception of nothing, more like our succeeding and failing in life is a function of leadership. So, the functioning of the earth is hinged on this one principle of leadership, which defines and dictates how the different structures of society work. Leadership can be expressed heart-fully or heartlessly. So we can safely infer that leadership is subjective and not absolute in its operating and dispensing; its impact can be good or bad, depending on the disposition of the individual holding onto her reigns and calling the shorts. The dispositions of individuals in terms of behaviour and character are very much connected to their emotions and personality. These two qualities that can be quantified in a way flow from our hearts, not referring to the biological organ that pumps blood throughout our bodies now, but rather the place from whence our Being is defined, and we give off the true essence of life and living. So the question is, what does it mean to lead from the heart? This is the focus of discussion in this episode of the Word Café.We are so honored to have Mark C. Crowley on this episode to talk about this.Mark C. The Better Leaders Better Schools Podcast with Daniel Bauer

MARK C. CROWLEY is a recognized visionary in workplace management, engagement, and culture. When the first edition of his book, Lead From The Heart: Transformational Leadership For The 21st Century, was published over a decade ago, many business leaders were slow to embrace it and misinterpreted its title as being synonymous with soft, weak, and ineffective management. Today, his pioneering philosophy on heart-led leadership has launched a global movement and Forbes Magazine has called his ideas “visionary” and “the blueprint for the future of workplace leadership.” As an educational resource, the first edition of Lead From The Heart has been taught in nine universities. Now, Crowley has released a new edition of Lead From The Heart (August 23, 2022), updated and revised to address the needs of those managing Gen Z and Millennial employees, supported by the latest global research on employee engagement.   Show Highlights Lead from the Heart to let your experience influence your work. How negative feedback can be the catalyst to keep you connected to approaching the “hard sells” of leadership.  Mark shares his process on how to stay committed to your vision. Take this first tiny first step to build a foundation for developing heart-centered leadership that will transform your school and impact the value you create for others. You need a “mirror moment” and a key ingredient to build the right team to empower your learning community.  Mark tells you how. The formula for a competitive advantage, a leadership edge, and to take your school to the next level.    “I believe when I'm supporting people the way that I was, I made people feel safe. I made people feel appreciated. I found out what they wanted to learn. I knew about their families. I knew about their dreams. I supported them in unique ways and made people feel that I love them, cared about them, and they wanted to work hard for me.” -Mark Crowley   Get the episode Transcript here!! Mark C. Crowley is a renowned global thought leader, speaker, and the author of the leadership classic, “Lead From The Heart.”Highlights: “I have science that proves that the heart actually plays an enormous role in influencing human behavior.” [7:45] Mark explains the sentiment behind his original book and new revision Lead From The Heart.“The strength of a heart-based leader is to see the potential in others and have the belief in them that they don't have in themselves.” [14:40] Marcel comments on the change that can happen in an employee when working with a leader who truly believes in them and sees what they don't see within themself. “The heart and the mind are actually connected and the heart actually sends more communication to the mind than the other way around.” [27:50] Mark gets into the science behind his idea of leading from the heart in which feelings genuinely influence our mind. He shares research from Heart Math that explains when people are working in a positive, appreciated environment they operate in their most optimal performance in what they call coherence. “Recognize that just because you have an opening, and someone comes who wants the job is the right fit for it.” [37:08] Mark explains the principle of Hiring from the Heart, having a high-performing team is about using great discipline in how you hire.“You have to adapt to your employees; so you have to know what it's important to them and know how to support them.” [37:11] Building a Relationship Mark says is not just spending time with your staff but getting to know their needs and wants and how you can help them be successful, that builds trust and provides a positive environment. “If you're a manager, you know something about what your employees do all day…so teach them, coach them, give them your time.” [40:15] Giving Time is an investment that Mark shares as an important responsibility and commitment for leaders.“There is a significant gap between what people feel from their manager and what managers think they're doing for them.” [41:45] Mark encourages leaders to make real Recognition a priority for their employees.“Any act of kindness, coaching, validation, or appreciation….is a micro manifestation of love.”[54:38] What does it mean to love your people? Mark wants leaders to know that these positive emotions are not the romantic version of love but real authentic professional ways to do business and lead. Mentioned in this episode:Mark C.
