Enough. Let's make a choice to try something different. My all-star special guest today on this all-star episode is author Jovanka Ciares and she's simplifying how to stop yo-yo dieting and instead, reclaim your wellness. Here's how. My all-star special guest today is author + nutrition educator Jovanka Ciares and she's simplifying how to stop yo-yo dieting. Why people of color are rarely represented in the billion-dollar industry of health and wellness and how to make a positive change here What are some practical ways we can incorporate more plant-based whole foods into our meals, especially when we're limited on time Why herbs are an important, secret weapon to healing and to a healthy lifestyle - as part of what she calls the Reclaiming Wellness Method …and ultimately, when people are ready to stop yo-yo dieting, she talks about the role that music and community plays in all of this. How we treat our physical body, what we ingest, how we let stress affect our day-to-day living… all of it is a choice. And I think today's conversation is another data point to show you and I that there is a different, more simpler and ultimately, BETTER way to live. If we simply choose. We all have a choice.

Seguimi su Instagram: @laguerragrande_podcastScritto e condotto da Andrea BassoMontaggio e audio: Andrea BassoFonti dell'episodio:David J. Earlier this week, we shared part one of this conversation, all about how to stop yo-yo-dieting… and boy howdy, this is certainly a HOT topic. You see, modern culture doesn't want you to realize that everything you need to get off this crazy train is well within your grasp right now. It instead wants you to keep consuming, keep falling off the wagon, keep shaming yourself to only repeat the cycle over and over and over again. Yo-yo dieting is a trap… and you know this, you ALWAYS regain the weight back (if not more). Enough. Time to choose something different. Now, if you haven't heard part one, go back and listen to that one first. But if you're ready to continue on, let's pick back up here with my all-star conversation with author and nutrition educator Jovanka Ciares as she simplifies how to stop yo-yo dieting. All of this will help you make better choices in life. It's time to simplify… Here's how. My special guest today is author + nutrition educator Jovanka Ciares and she's simplifying how to stop yo-yo dieting. Ep #202 - Reclaiming Your Health - An Interview with Author and Wellness Coach, Jovanka Ciares. Jovanka Ciares' latest book, “Reclaiming Wellness,” is not just about reclaiming wellness but it's also about claiming yourself and becoming an empowered individual. One who owns their body and understands how their body functions. Jovanka's personal journey began in Puerto Rico, where she was raised. She and her family lived alongside the land, the rainforest, and her family's food did not travel far from its origin to reach their table. Eating the foods from the land and having them home cooked was common for Jovanka in her early years. Then she moved to New York City to pursue her education. And that's when her body gave her what she calls “a smack down.” Chronic sickness soon became part of her daily life. By her mid-twenties she was told by Western medicine that they could do nothing for her. And that she would have to learn to live in pain and discomfort for the rest of her life. Can you imagine being told that by your trusted doctor(s)? Well, that was not acceptable to Jovanka so she began to explore other options. She began by reclaiming her heritage and the foods she grew up with. She also incorporated other healing practices such as, traditional Chinese Medicine and Western Herbalism. Jovanka's journey involved doing a deep dive both for her personal wellness and her spiritual growth. In her book, “Reclaiming Wellness,” she gives her readers many tools for how to heal your physical, mental, emotional and spiritual bodies. Some of the tools Jovanka touches on in her book include, meditation, hypnosis, journaling, acupuncture and so much more. And as we have both learned through life experience, not everything works for everybody. The important lesson here is to be open to the possibilities and be willing to try different modalities until you find what works for you. We also talked about the importance of seeing your doctor(s) as partners in your journey to heal. You are the authority of your body and the doctor may be the expert in a specific field of medicine but that does not make the doctor an expert on your body. It's all about working together so you can reach understanding and become knowledgeable in the quest to heal your body. It may be one of the simplest and most truthful health claims ever… you are what you eat. Especially when it comes to sugar and a poor diet. Eat doughnuts, French fries, pizza and ice cream on a regular basis and you will look like a walking fast food advertisement. Eat colorful fruits and vegetables, whole fresh foods and high-quality proteins and fats and your body will turn heads at the beach. Sounds simple yet most of us struggle with sensible nutrition advice and find ourselves enjoying far too many high calorie sugary treats. We are literally addicted to bad food. (01:29) Healing through music and dance (is music a great equalizer?) (09:14) Ubuntu: the need to come together as a community (12:33) What is ubuntu? (14:28) Healing practices you'll be surprised to know are 1000s of years old (17:15) Water, oil, and heat: timeless components of healing (19:27) Overscheduling yourself: how to make healing a regular part of your busy life. (25:03) How cannabis can help you heal (and why we need to remove the stigma) (31:50) Yoga instructors: Decolonizing the mind and insisting that you belong (36:50) Having routines that vary from season to season (39:31) How do we talk about obesity without fat-shaming? (46:20) You are the medicine 4 Key Takeaways 1. You have the power to heal yourself. Before you get to a point where your body is falling apart, you have the power to heal yourself and restore balance in your body. You are the medicine. 2. Music is an incredible tool for healing. Music allows you to be with others even when you are physically alone. When listening to music, you're in the company of people who recorded these songs. 3. Make self-care an intentional part of your day. Even busy people can do this. You don't have to spend lots of time on a self-care routine. You can start by blocking off a 15-minute time slot dedicated to self-care every day. 4. The stigma around cannabis leads to people struggling needlessly. Cannabis can alleviate many of our pains and our societal understanding of it needs to be reformed. The stigma around cannabis is based on an outdated and incorrect understanding of its effects. Hey fam, welcome back for another episode of The Brave Table! Today's guest is Jovanka Ciares, a best-selling author, wellness expert, integrative herbalist, nutrition educator, and coach. Jovanka's here to talk about optimizing your health through your ancestry and Mother Nature, how you can be brave in making better choices for yourself or when speaking to loved ones about improving their health, and to give us the scoop on her latest book, Reclaiming Wellness: Ancient Wisdom for Your Healthy, Happy, and Beautiful Life. What you'll get out of this episode… - What is herbalism and why it's the easiest thing you can do to reclaim your health - How to find balance in your health instead of taking an all or nothing approach - What herbs, fungi, and adaptogens you can take to have more energy - What do when you feel defeated by your diagnosis and when Western medicine has failed you - What it means to reclaim your ancestry and what your elders can teach you about your health and diet - How to have tough conversations with family members and loved ones when you're concerned about their health and what steps you can take to help them - What is the “Reduce and Replace” method, and how to use it to foster better habits I met Jovanka at Burning Man right after I sold my practice, and she was exiting a big-time career as an exec in the entertainment industry. We realized we had so much in common: we were both ending our first marriages, we were total type A queens learning how to loosen the reigns on our perfectionism, and we were both on the path of searching for something that felt more aligned with this next stage of our evolution. For Jovanka, that journey started with completely burning out. Born in Puerto Rico, she moved to New York for work, where she quickly climbed the corporate ladder. However, the long days and fast pace had her body falling apart, and she experienced a host of unpleasant and “incurable” conditions like IBS, fibroids, and ulcers. Refusing to believe there was no way to feel better, she traveled around the world to learn about ancient medicines and healing practices—like Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Western herbalism—and used them to heal herself of all her disorders. Jovanka realized the healing modalities she was discovering were nothing new; they were passed down from our ancestors and became lost in our hyper externalized, materialized, and medicalized society. As a woman of color, she felt she needed to be a voice for these medicines (many of which originated among communities of color) and encourage people to reclaim their ancestry and their birthright to good health. Her latest book, Reclaiming Wellness: Ancient Wisdom for Your Healthy, Happy, and Beautiful Life, explores today's most effective wellness practices—and their multicultural sources—in a way that makes health accessible to all. It includes practical ways to incorporate plant-based whole foods into even the most hectic routines, gentle movements you can make that are centered around self-love rather than exercise, mindfulness techniques, and more. Jovanka gives us a taste of some of the most successful tips from her book in this episode, so tune in! While you listen, I'd love for you to contemplate how you can incorporate healthy changes into your own life to optimize your wellbeing. Can you be brave enough to challenge some of our ideas and beliefs about health in Western medicine and try another way? Even if it's as simple as trying a new herb or meditation. Or, if you feel like you've got your health on lock, maybe you can muster up the courage to share this information with a loved one whose health has you concerned and spread some new knowledge into their life that could help them out? Creating sustainable self-care practices involves The realization that slowing down is still moving forward Replacing the habits you remove with something positive and fulfilling Asking for and receiving what you want and need Using natural solutions from plants to support your wellness practices Spending quality time in nature Do you find it hard to carve out time for yourself every single day? Like me, I bet there are days when you feel pulled in a million different directions, tending to everyone's needs but your own. It takes dedication to stick to self-care practices while living a full, and sometimes hectic life. I get how self-care doesn't always go according to plans. That's why I brought on today's guest to share her key wellness practices to embrace despite being overscheduled and busy. About Jovanka Ciares Jovanka Ciares is the author of Reclaiming Wellness and several other titles. A certified wellness expert, integrative herbalist, nutrition educator, and coach, she offers lectures and workshops in Spanish and English. Jovanka studied nutrition with bestselling author T. Colin Campbell, Ph.D., at his Center for Nutrition Studies (in partnership with Cornell University) and herbalism/plant medicine with Tieraona Low Dog, MD. A native of Puerto Rico, she lives in Los Angeles. Slowing Down and Getting Support So You Can Do More For Yourself Adapting wellness practices to your life, especially when you're overwhelmed, is no simple task. Yet, as Jovanka explains, transformational habits and rituals can be integrated with ease and grace. This involves realizing that just because you might be slowing down, you are still moving forward. It also involves replacing the habits you remove with something more fulfilling. You'll likely need to ask others to support you with this. Don't be afraid to do so because receiving in itself is an act of generosity as Jovanka explains. FInding Natural Support from Plants and Herbs An essential part of Jovanka's process involves the medicinal nature of plants. Whether you need focus, energy, or relaxation, tapping into the power of plants can go a long way in supporting your wellness practices. Herbs and supplements can restore your endocrine system, support your body, and give your mind what it needs. Jovanka describes how a number of specific adaptogenic herbs can help support and sustain your self-care rituals. What can support you on your path to self-care and wellness? Share your thoughts with me in the comments section of the episode page. Quotes: “People need to start understanding that they are the experts in their body. The person you look at in the mirror every morning is the expert of you.” [11:19] “A lot of us, especially women, are very generous with our time and energy, but we don't want to receive. Nothing could be more detrimental. We have to learn that the act of receiving is also an act of generosity.” [21:27] “So you find some alternative solutions and, in combination with what your doctor recommends, there is no need for us to struggle through a lot of these hormonal changes.” [29:30] “We are part of mother nature and we need to reconnect with it. It's critical to our health and wellbeing.” [33:50] In This Episode Understanding that you are the expert of your own body and advocating for what you need for it [6:30] Reclaiming what fulfills you after removing what doesn't [15:30] How adaptogenic plants can help us adapt and reclaim our wellness [22:30] Why a connection with nature is an integral part of wellness [31:15] Resources Mentioned: Use Promo Code ‘podcast' for 10% off your order at the Essentially Whole Store Here Jovanka Ciares' Website Follow Jovanka on Facebook | YouTube | Instagram | Linkedin | Twitter The Reclaiming Wellness Book Other Resources: Check out the full show notes page Keep up with everything Dr. Mariza Follow Dr. Mariza on Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | Youtube Podcast production & marketing support by the team at Counterweight Creative

But if you're ready to continue on, let's pick back up here with my conversation with author and nutrition educator Jovanka Ciares as she simplifies how to stop yo-yo dieting. All of this will help you make better choices in life. It's time to simplify… Here's how. My special guest today is author + nutrition educator Jovanka Ciares and she's simplifying how to stop yo-yo dieting. We tackle and simplify all aspects of it, including: How she defines what “wellness” is, especially in this day and age when fast food and instant gratification is slowly killing us all Have you noticed? Why people of color are rarely represented in the billion-dollar industry of health and wellness and how to make a positive change here What are some practical ways we can incorporate more plant-based whole foods into our meals, especially when we're limited on time Why herbs are an important, secret weapon to healing and to a healthy lifestyle - as part of what she calls the Reclaiming Wellness Method …and ultimately, when people are ready to stop yo-yo dieting, she talks about the role that music and community plays in all of this. Q: Are you ready to stop yo-yo dieting? If yes, this one is for you. It's time to #DoTheThing ---- Show notes available with all links mentioned here:https://thesimplifiers.com/podcast/jovanka-ciares-stop-yo-yo-dieting-part-two
Wellness practices are meant for everyone and can be easy to implement, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, income, or social status. “The lack of representation within the wellness industry is palpable, from practitioners and advocates to brands that seemingly cater to only one type of audience — wealthy, white Westerners,” writes Ciares. “Wellness is not for the privileged few. Wellness is a state of living that applies to all living creatures — humans, animals, and plants. And the most popular wellness practices have been practiced for millennia by people all over the world.” Ciares' own healing journey from debilitating physical conditions to vibrant health have fueled her desire to share specific wellness practices, like alternative medicine, affordable plant-based whole foods, lazy-proof movement, nature, and music, to help people of all backgrounds. She encourages us to trust ourselves to determine which practices are best for us. Please join us Thursday to discover what could lead you to a healthier, stronger, happier version of yourself.

Are you ready to stop yo-yo dieting once and for all? Lord knows, it doesn't work but we get woo-ed by the bright, shiny object syndrome of magic pills and “5 steps to the body you desire” nonsense that's shoved down our throats especially in these months leading up to summer. Enough. Let's make a choice to try something different. My special guest today is author Jovanka Ciares and she's simplifying how to stop yo-yo dieting and instead, reclaim your wellness. She shares age-old practices from around the world that help us all lead a healthy, happy and beautiful life, regardless of our age, gender, ethnicity, income or social status. So, if you're tired of bouncing from one doctor's office to the next and packing on more prescription pills and pounds around the midsection than ever before… Jovanka shares a better way to create your own wellness journey that works specifically for you and your body. Here's how. It's time to #DoTheThing ---- Show notes available with all links mentioned here:https://thesimplifiers.com/podcast/jovanka-ciares-stop-yo-yo-dieting-part-one

When Jovanka Von Wilsdorf wrote songs for a virtual pop star, she found herself falling in love with humans again. The spaces between art and tech, human and artificial intelligence, is where the Berlin-based songwriter, artist profiler, and speaker feels at home. Jovanka tells irregular host Tristra Newyear Yeager how she got there, from touring and recording with her band Quarks, to writing hit songs for top artists, to distilling AI research into stories that reach musicians. Jovanka discusses the upcoming DIANA AI songwriting competition she founded and explores the AI-powered musicmaking tools that get her most excited. What do artist-facing AI music startups get wrong about the creative process? What do they get right? NOTE: The audio quality is rough (thanks to work from home conditions and transatlantic connections), but the conversation quality is high. Jovanka Vuckovic is an award-winning filmmaker and writer. In the past two decades, she has worked as a visual effects artist, earning a Gemini Award, and cemented a reputation as a genre film authority—she was twice named one of the most important women in the history of horror, serving for a time as editor-in-chief of famed Rue Morgue Magazine. In 2016, she spread her wings into the US film market, joining the DGA after directing a segment of XX, the first-ever all-female horror film anthology from Magnolia Pictures, which had its premiere at Sundance 2017. Her debut Riot Girls, written by Katherine Collins, will see its release this year. The film tells the story of two young women who must save a young man from the clutches of a little psychopath on the wrong side of Potter’s Bluff — a town divided after a mysterious disease wiped out all the adults. The movie that Jovanka has chosen to discuss is a grossly underappreciated classic - 1981's Dead & Buried. Jovanka talks about how she named the small town of Potter's Bluff in Riot Girls after the Potter's Bluff of Dead & Buried. She even goes as far to say she envisions that both films exist in the exact same town. Jovanka also opens up about her intense fear of death and how that influences her films. And she and April discuss the struggles of getting a movie made as a female filmmaker. You can see Riot Girls in theaters and on demand on September 13th. And if you haven't seen Dead & Buried yet, you simply must! With April Wolfe and Jovanka Vuckovic. You can let us know what you think of Switchblade Sisters on Twitter or Facebook. Or email us at switchbladesisters@maximumfun.org. Produced by Casey O'Brien and Laura Swisher for MaximumFun.org.
It's four scary movies for the price of one! Callie and Kaitlin celebrate the grand tradition of the horror anthology with this excellent collection of lady-led spooky shorts.

Herbal medicine is a natural option to remedy some ailments.Jovanka Ciares left the entertainment industry behind when she discovered herbal treatments for personal ailments. This led her to a new life as an herbal medicine practitioner. Jovanka looked healthy and fit on the surface during her industry days, but her body was suffering. Reducing stress and using food as medicine set her on the road to healing. Trying culinary herbs for treatment is fairly safe. Ginger may reduce the symptoms of IBS. A tincture of rhodiola may also ease your worries Jovanka recommends keeping a journal of the herbal treatments you use and their effects. Increasing your vegetable consumption and reducing sugar intake also makes a difference. Listen as Jovanka joins Dr. Bond to share how herbs and dietary changes improved her health.

"What is this horrendous place?" Well, Nyssa, it's Terminus - a place to which Bor was presumably drawn by nominative determinism. It's a drab old hospital where the porters are metal, the doctors are Goths and the burglars are New Romantics. The Doctor wins a fight, Nyssa loses her skirt and Tegan draws the short straw, what with Turlough staring at her posterior and the extras revealing her upper assets. Did Olvir train at the Wayne Sleep Combat Academy? Is the Doctor's creepy CCTV standard TARDIS issue? Do the Vanir have enough dog poop bags to last until their next Ocado delivery? And did Jim and Martin find Terminus to be a real tonic or some used Hydromel? Find out here...
"All the baddie podcasts have got together to lock us in a big box" Ben and Mark FINALLY reach the end of Series 5 with a discussion about The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang and Castrovalva. Along the way, they ponder how a Dalek would read an Usborne guide to the Romans, pitch a potential Big Finish boxed set, sing Alanis Morissette, sing Morrissey and just generally have a good time. Whilst some of the chat is potentially a by-product of booze and two friends having not seen each other for a while, there are also some more measured discussions of Amy and Rory's relationship, the problems with the Davison era and a lot of 80s Doctor Who as a whole, and what makes for a good debut from a Doctor.
"A delightfully unexpected afternoon." Well it won't take up much of your afternoon and there's very little that's unexpected here. For this is Black Orchid - a ripping yarn of bronchial brothers, lippy bookworms, smutty absentees and a child bride who's passed around like a gold ball at a Telosian rugby match. The Doctor plays the clown, Tegan cuts a rug, Nyssa finds her double and Adric eats double his body weight in finger food. But who is the tweed-trousered killer who's friends with an Amazonian Indian? Could he possibly have any connection with Charles "not one of the Worcester Woosters" Cranleigh whose brother disappeared on an Amazonian expedition? And who is the piratical prat with the badge for mathematical excellence? Listen to find out...
Celebrating the 3rd Anniversary of Next Stop Everywhere, Charles Skaggs and Jesse Jackson are joined by special guest companion Ken Schaefer to discuss "Logopolis", the seventh serial from Doctor Who Season 18 in 1981, featuring the final story of Tom Baker as the Fourth Doctor, Matthew Waterhouse as Adric, Sarah Sutton as Nyssa, Anthony Ainley as the Third Master, and introducing Janet Fielding as Tegan Jovanka! "What are you concealing from me, boy?" Not enough, some might say, for this is Castrovalva - where Master Waterhouse introduces the innocent and unsuspecting viewer to "Little Matthew" . But that's not the only harrowing element of the Fifth Doctor's first outing. The Time Lord himself is made incompetent (and incontinent?) by his regeneration but still gets to go on a self-propelling wheelchair and pulls off decent impressions of his former selves - and Basil Fawlty (the War Hotelier). Tegan gets hot and bothered, Nyssa gets moist and, of course, Adric has a semi on, before they all meet Chardonnay Shardovan and his sheep-in-wolf's-clothing chums. There's a fly in the ointment, of course, and this one has a risible, raisable platform, a double-decker perspex top hat and a penchant for looking at boys on the dark web. But does the new Doctor bowl Jim and Martin over? Or is he out first ball? Find out here.
Jovanka Ciares is a former entertainment executive turned Wellness expert, detox specialist, nutrition educator and author. She is the creator of the Wellness Smackdown™, a proprietary detox and weight loss program for natural weight loss, which was featured on the first season of ABC’s “My Diet Is Better Than Yours”. [00 : 33] - She studied nutrition with best-selling author Dr. T. Colin Campbell at Cornell University and life/wellness coaching at the Spencer Institute. [02 : 30] - Jovanka took her life experience to make it very relatable to women. [03 : 08] - In her early life, Jovanka made drastic changes that lead to a new life that she is living now and a career that’s she’s in now. [03 : 29] – She is from Puerto Rico. She went to US later and she fell ill. Started changing diet from her typical diet that she grew up with to the standard American diet. [04 : 00] - She went to graduate school, started working and climbed the corporate ladder very quickly in a large corporation. [04 : 30] - She was travelling the world and managing an enormous budget and it was taking a toll on her. [04 : 50] - In the process of finding alternatives to the smack down, it led her to the discovery of a new passion that is not mainstream. [06 : 38] - How do you take your past experience and turn it into a business and make it a sustainable business model? How do you start from concept to really monetizing the business? A mindset shift has to happen. Transmit the timeframe. Use skills that I have learned from the corporate world to transmit to my business plan. Plan logistically and financially. Reducing overhead to a minimum for at least the first two or three years. Clarity about how to grow the business and how to access the market as well as the people. Aligning myself with people in this industry. I have two mentors who are instrumental in getting me to where I am today. [10 : 50] - Fitness and nutrition programs are normally one-on-one. How do you structure those group programs? Started off selling one-on-one. Hired a coach in creating programs for the internet. Started with a small program. Now I have published 3 books, 5 or 6 products online and a membership community. [13 : 40] - It took four years after she left her job before the products started to be profitable. [15 : 58] - How did you write the first book and build your credibility further through the book? – I have written three books and they were all self-published which I did on purpose. I asked people what they wanted in the book which I was going to write. My second book is a cookbook that complemented the first one. [20 : 31] - You are known as a detox specialist and this word can be confusing. Can you explain this to the listeners? – No one should be afraid of or concerned about the detox process. What we do depends on the level of comfort of the client. [25 : 55] - Three strategies to influence your hardest clients to focus on their health: To determine what works for them and this can be different from what works for me. Embrace the day-to-day, e.g. this analogy - if there is a flat tire, fix the tire and keep going. Don’t go back to your old habit. The end of the road is the end of your life. It is part of the journey of your life. The destination is death. Your journey does not end when you reach that goal of weight loss, etc. [30 : 54] - How do you take time off for self-care? – Self-care is not negotiable. Find time to go for vacation and give back to the community. [35 : 10] - Last words of wisdom – Ensure that there is joy in the process every day. There will be days that are hard but you must remember why you are doing the things you do. Be reminded of the things that will bring you joy when your goals are achieved.
