Debut novelist Jamie Varon joins Zibby to discuss her dazzling, heart-warming, and smartly crafted rom-com, MAIN CHARACTER ENERGY. Jamie talks about her protagonist, Poppy, who is an aspiring novelist. When her beloved aunt dies, she leaves Poppy a trip to a stunning villa (and secretive writers' residency) in the French Riviera and a challenge to finish her novel in six months. Poppy has to confront her writer's block, family drama, complicated romances, and self-doubt. Jamie also describes her writing process (particularly in crafting a slow-burn romance and developing such memorable characters), her own experiences in the South of France, her background in nonfiction writing, and the journey that led her to publish her first novel. Purchase on Bookshop: https://bit.ly/41ygmnSShare, rate, & review the podcast, and follow Zibby on Instagram @zibbyowens! “'Something I always say: at the very least, do it for the plot. Do it for the story. Be bold in life, mostly because not being bold is boring as hell.' Margot tipped her head back in glittery laughter and I felt my chest expand in hope.” That's just one of many glittering conversations that the main character of Jamie Varon's debut novel, Main Character Energy, has with her Aunt, a guiding light who helps her find her voice and pursue her publishing dream. In today's conversation, Jamie and I go behind the book to talk about how fiction differs from nonfiction, working with a writing coach, the importance of giving yourself permission for a “zero” draft, moving past the mental machinations of envy and the desire for logical explanations for others' success, and so much more. Be sure to check out our previous conversation for the Pivot podcast 278: Radically Content with Jamie Varon. More About Jamie: Jamie Varon's writing has been seen across the internet for over a decade, from her early days of personal blogging all the way to features in publications such as Teen Vogue, HuffPost, GOOD, Complex, and many more. Over the years, both her long-form essays and short-form prose have garnered millions of reads and views, using her signature style of combining personal story with universal themes.

Earlier this week, we shared part one of this all-star conversation, all about how to say NO to hustle culture. And this conversation has really stuck in the forefront of my mind this entire week. So many aspects of how we choose to live our lives, who we spend time with and who we invest in. What things we bring into our lives and what things we say, “thank you but no thank you.” All of this is wrapped up in this particular topic. Now, if you haven't heard part one, go back and listen to that one first. But if you're ready to continue on, let's pick back up here with my conversation with author Jamie Varon as she simplifies how to say NO to hustle culture.  It's time to simplify… Here's how.  My all-star special guest today is author Jamie Varon and she's simplifying how to say NO to hustle culture. We tackle and simplify all aspects of it, including: How she defines what ‘hustle culture' is/isn't and what the consequences and warning signs are that you might be caught up in this trap What it means to be “radically content” - in a real, authentic and lasting way When society tells us we are “not enough” - we remain stuck… how we can squash this old story and begin to unlearn what we've been taught us over time Why it's potentially dangerous to be in the constant pursuit of our “best” lives and ideas on what's better …and ultimately, she shows us how to reduce the negative self-talk that keeps you dissatisfied and feeling unworthy of happiness and deep contentment. I believe it's the 1000 daily choices that make up my lifetime.  When I choose wisely, my little light inside shines brighter and brighter.  And equally, when I get overwhelmed or exhausted, have a slip or hit the big red F-it button in the sky, well… that's a choice too. Either way, I hope you know that you're never too far gone. When you are rooted down in the present, surround yourself with healthy people and life-giving communities, all it sometimes takes is the courage to take the very next step. You can do it, I believe in you… it's time to simplify! Q: Are you ready to say NO to hustle culture? If yes, this one is for you. It's time to decide… is it time to (finally) say NO to hustle culture running and slowing ruining your entire life? I know I am… but you might not even be aware of the insidious undertone that is happening around us and inside us on the daily, that is totally driving the bus. It reinforces the lie of “not enough” and “you're doing it wrong” because like any virus, it needs a host to feed on. And if that's you I dare say, I'm willing to bet that it's not only affecting your physical health, but your relationships, your sense of belonging, and your mental well-being. Let's unpack all of that so we together can make a change. My all-star special guest today for this all-star episode is author Jamie Varon and she's simplifying how to say NO to hustle culture. She believes you are totally capable of building a satisfied, contented, and happy life for yourself that gently opts out of the societal “shoulds.” There is an infinite wisdom inside you that knows what will make you your most vibrant self and she just wants to help you unlock your truth. Here's how.  My all-star special guest today is author Jamie Varon and she's simplifying how to say NO to hustle culture. My special guest today is author Jamie Varon and she's simplifying how to say NO to hustle culture. This conversation is the last in our series focusing on discernment and helping you ultimately to MAKE A CHOICE. We will learn: Why more isn't always better.  How to find contentment through unlearning things.  How to balance dissatisfaction as a state of mind vs a healthy motivator.  Do you ever feel like your happiness is just waiting for the right circumstances? We get into these habits of looking for the things that could be better. Instead of seeing the beauty and perfection in all things, we train our minds to see how something could be more beautiful or where its lacking in perfection. In this podcast episode, I spoke with Jamie Varon, Author and Designer. We discuss Jamie's new book, Radically Content, about how to find happiness in a world that conditions us to feel as though we need to earn our happiness. Jamie Varon's writing has been seen across the internet for over a decade, from her early days of personal blogging all the way to features in publications such as Teen Vogue, HuffPost, GOOD, Complex, and many more. Over the years, both her long-form essays and short-form prose have garnered millions of reads and views, using her signature style of combining personal story with universal themes. Jamie also shares her thoughts on building a life you really love with her many followers on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter (@jamievaron). In addition to her writing, she has a long-standing career as a branding expert, course creator, and graphic designer. Jamie lives in Calabasas, California.   In this episode we discuss: What "radically content" means to author Jamie as well as why she named her book about finding happiness in your everyday life. How society has taught us that we need to "earn" our happiness, "earn" our relaxation, and what to do about that. Achievement DOES NOT equal happiness! Nor does it determine your worth! Why you don't need permission to feel good enough or happy, you are good enough. How messages in society such as "the summer body" subtly tell us we can't enjoy life or be happy unless we have/do X. How to truly enjoy the journey and celebrate the small wins. How you can change your relationship with social media and use it as a positive influence. What does success mean to you? Does it mean hustling hard to the point you have no one and no energy to celebrate with? Does the degree of success determine your "worth" to society? or to yourself? The importance of feeling and being curious about your emotions as a tool to heal.   Buy Jamie's book, Radically Content: https://radicallycontent.com   Connect with Jamie: https://jamievaron.com https://instagram.com/jamievaron https://facebook.com/jamievaron   ++++++ Calmly Coping is a self-improvement podcast for overthinkers who struggle with high-functioning anxiety to help you feel more calm, balanced, and confident. ++++++   *** WORK WITH ME *** My mission is to help you decrease your anxiety, declutter your mind, and say hello to a life of calm and balance.  Learn more about my coaching and course offerings below. https://becalmwithtati.com/work-with-me   *** JOIN THE CALMLY COPING GROUP *** The free supportive community for high-achievers with high-functioning anxiety. We also discuss the importance of being mindful and practicing self-care as our communities start to re-open, people get vaccinated and our culture transitions to this "new normal." In this episode, Tina and Kevin welcome the sensational Jamie Varon—the “multi-passionate” creative—a prolific writer and businesswoman extraordinaire. She runs her own business, inspires through Instagram, has created her own online courses, writes articles, blogs, and her wildly popular and inspiring “Friday Letters”, and loves every second of her insanely busy life. How exactly does one do this? That was the question on Tina and Kevin’s minds when they chatted to Jamie, and her answers do not disappoint. Jamie discusses what it means to be intentional with your life, that putting yourself first is not selfish, that at any point you can change the stories you tell yourself, that you should really love what you love, and most importantly… that JOY is the standard. Jamie didn’t always feel this way, and that’s what makes her work and her words so impactful and inspiring. She’s living proof that if you want to change something, you can. You’re far more powerful than you think. And if anyone can make you see that, it’s Jamie. Here’s where you can find Jamie! Instagram: @jamievaronTwitter: @jamievaronhttp://www.jamievaron.comFollow the pod on Instagram!@nopressurepodFollow your hosts on Instagram!@kevinmajorino & @tinamajorino

Jamie Varon is an entrepreneur, graphic and web designer, writer, app developer, author, traveler, curator, course creator – seriously, she’s a woman of so many talents, one feels intimidated just trying to read her bio, let alone keep up. In 2009, when personal branding is at the height of being personal branding, she launched the website, Twitter Should Hire Me to make a big splash on the scene. She's been splashing all over the place since then: starting the hugely popular and successful Shatterboxx web design boutique, traveling to and then living in Paris and Rome, being bold enough to try her hand at any pursuit or passion she’d wanted. She moved to LA last year to become a Hollywood screenwriting superstar, only to discover she really just wanted to be a writer who was able to state her own truth. Wrangling a fabulous position as the West Coast Producer of Thought Catalog, writing and publishing two books in 2014 filled with personal essays and hilarious stories -- all while rocking the characteristic sass and wit that garnered an audience that has followed her around the world and back again.
