435. We talk to Steven Shepard about his novel. Brother Against Brother: Civil War is a historical fictional novel about the Red River Campaign of the American Civil War as it was as experienced by Captain Douglas Ivey. Captain Ivey gets assigned by his commander, General Richard Taylor, to assemble a rag tag squad of soldiers drafted from local Louisiana civilians and regular Confederate Army to conduct a recon mission south along the Red River to locate and number an invading Yankee Army. The story Brother Against Brother illustrates the personal losses and suffering the people of Northwest Louisiana and Captain Ivey experienced from the Civil War and the Red River Campaign that brought a bloody war to their doorstep. Along the way, Captain Ivey meets a unique assortment of characters from the North Louisiana region that illustrate the kind of people involved in that conflict, period and the war of 1864. The action of the story climaxes with Captain Ivey's experience at the Battle of Mansfield and the capture of Captain Ivey's own brother from the Union Army. The book is a dramatic story of what happens to two brothers on opposite sides of a war after they have to face each other in armed combat. This week in Louisiana history. September 18, 1799. This episode of Not Safe for Network is packed! We review The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, Loki episode 2, and the new Borat series on Amazon. We talk about Catwoman and Batman, and...well, we can't really break that down in a PG rated description. Karl goes down a rabbit hole that involves Noah Taylor, Michael Hutchins, and Pink Floyd. And Brandon scores tickets to Fatman Beyond and wants help with a question. Plus some talk about the ill fated Swamp Thing, and the upcoming Sandman.
The first Marvel TV show on Disney + has completed its run -Wandavision! Like everyone else, your Planet 8 crew was glued to their screens, watching the show and trying to figure out what was going on! There were so many rumors and theories put forth by fans that it was hard to watch without any preconceived notions. And the sitcom veneer was unusual, and at first was a bit off-putting, but as we made our way into the show, we all came to really enjoy it!Just a warning: as usual this post and episode is SPOILER-FILLED, so proceed at your own risk!Once again, Marvel has taken some deep comic book history and woven it into a TV show, which is impressive enough. Hey, we never imagined we would see these characters in live action! But then, the show took on a bigger topic of grief and depression, which was totally unexpected. The way the show managed to portray Wanda's suffering over the loss of her brother and the Vision was truly moving. It was also just great to see more of Wanda and the Vision, two characters we liked but didn't get to see a lot of in the films. Here, the events revolve around them, although at first we're not really clear about what's going on. The mystery is part of the fun of watching the show. We also were pleased to see a number of other characters show up, like Darcy and Jimmy Woo.Of course new characters were introduced too, most notably Monica Rambeau and Agatha Harkness. Monica seems destined to go on to super-herodom, whether as Photon or Spectrum, remains to be seen. Agatha is still around and it wouldn't be a surprise to see her show up again. Besides, she had the best theme song!We also have a new version of the Vision, the white Vision, running around. Where will he show up next? And what will he be like? Will he and Wanda get together again? So many questions! It's the mark of a good show that we are left wanting more. Wandavision has just left us more excited for Falcon and the Winter Soldier, as well as Dr. Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and all the other Marvel projects to come. Before we get to the Sensor Sweep, we'd like to once again thank you listeners, for nominating Planet 8 for the Rondo Awards for Best Multimedia Site. It's an honor to be nominated for a second time for this award, which is voted on by the fans. We would be so grateful if you would consider going the final distance and voting for us in Best Multimedia Site. There are also many other categories you can vote in, such as Best Horror Host, where our friends Lord Blood-Rah and Mr. Lobo are both nominated. Check out the Rondo Award site here for details on how to vote. Note: unlike what we said in the podcast, you can only vote ONCE! Your Planet 8 crew has explored many realms of science fiction, fantasy, and horror, but this time we are taking on one of the all-time greats: Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey.Still considered by many to be the finest science fiction film ever made, Kubrick, along with science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke, developed a sweeping epic about mankind's place in the universe. It took almost three years from conception to the film's premiere in April 1968. Audiences had never seen anything like it, and many were simply dumbfounded by the ambiguity of the film. With 2001, Kubrick wanted to go outside conventional storytelling techniques and give the audience "basically a visual, nonverbal experience" that "hits the viewer at an inner level of consciousness, just as music does." The film seems to be rather polarizing, with people either enjoying the mystery of it or finding the whole thing annoying.Your crew has various levels of enthusiasm for 2001! Some of us -OK, one of us (Karen) loves the film! Other crew members are perhaps not quite as enthusiastic. But we all can agree on its importance to science fiction, and film in general. Without 2001, and the vast technological advancements it made, we certainly wouldn't have had Star Wars, or Battlestar Galactica, Space:1999, and pretty much everything that has been made after it. The pioneering techniques of Douglas Trumbull, Stuart Freeborn, and so many others paved the way for the science fiction films we all know and love. The effects still look surprisingly good today. Of course, the movie was made during the height of the space race, and that enters our conversation too. Kubrick and Clarke wanted to create something that showed the beauty and wonder of space exploration, and how it was mankind's destiny to leave Earth -the cradle -and go beyond. Certainly, the film must have had a different impact on audiences viewing it in 1968 than in 2021. 2001 is nothing if not thought-provoking, and we get into some pondering of our own, as we wonder about the meaning and function of the mysterious monoliths, if progress is always fueled by aggression, what happened to HAL, and man's place in the cosmos. But hey, it's not all deep thoughts! You can be sure we'll talk about things like wobbly space stewardesses, cockney HAL, and Arthur C. Clarke in a towel!Fittingly, our Sensor Sweep this time around centers on a massive tome, Space Odyssey: Stanley Kubrick, Arthur C. Clarke, and the Making of a Masterpiece by Michael Benson. If you're a fan of 2001 or Stanley Kubrick, this is a fascinating look at how the film came together, from the initial meetings of Kubrick and Clarke, to preproduction and all the way to the film's reception by critics and audiences. It's amazing in its depth and detail. You can find it on Amazon, and be sure to check your local bookseller too. That's all for us this time - we're shutting the pod bay doors now! Send final transmissions to:Twitter: https://twitter.com/Planet8CastFacebook: www.Facebook.com/Planet8PodcastThis conversation can serve no purpose anymore. Goodbye.
If you cannot see the audio controls, listen/download the audio file hereOkay, so I'm running a D&D campaign! Don't get too excited, I'm a first time DM, and have only the barest handle on what I'm doing. Thankfully, a couple of my players have a better handle on this ruleset than I do, and we're going to get into some old-school Moldvay Basic D&D for you guys!Originally I was just going to record sessions because not every player I've roped into this insane endeavor is going to be able to show up every session. So I wanted to have a definable record of what went down so people who couldn't make it could catch up. But, I figure why not share that with you guys as well? And so here we are. These'll hopefully be going up about every Sunday or Monday. I made a mistake this time and didn't do screen capture, so I had to take the time out and put the maps into the various time slots in the video I'm eventually going to upload to YouTube. Unfortunately I had an accident while editing, and the video is going to be slightly delayed while I re-render the entire fucking thing. However, the audio version is ready to go, and that's what I'm bringing right now. If you're not interested in seeing the maps for the places the player characters go, this'll be right up your alley. Next time I'll have actual screen capture as well as audio so that everything is preserved properly, but for now, this is all I got.So I hope that you enjoy my abortive attempts at DM'ing, and that you tune in next time to The Adventures of the Murder-Hobo's in The Temple of Elemental Evil![NOTE: This post will be updated with the video for those interested]

After offing a Red Wizard at Castle Naerytar and acquiring the secret code word from him to actuate a subterranean portal, the PCs - namely, Lathandis (Wood Elf Cleric), Seren (Half-Elf Eldritch Knight), Erzo (Drow Rogue), along with NPC muffin Jamna Gleamsilver (Gnome Rogue) - are teleported, then emerge on the other side of... who knows where? Unlike the swampy, muggy atmospheric conditions at the Mere of Dead Men, the climate at this new and apparently remote locale is cooler, fresher, gusty, alpine- like. Upon materialization, the first thing they see, within arrow shot, is what appears to be a lodge of some kind, with snow-capped mountains forming the backdrop. Who or what else will they encounter? What, then, will the PCs do? Will they yodel-ay-hee-hoo? Listen in to this podcast episode and find out. After the travelling for about one week northward on the High Road, the caravan stops off at the Carnath Roadhouse. The PCs - Seren (Half-Elf Eldritch Knight), Lathandis (Wood Elf Cleric), Erzo (Drow Rogue) - have been retained as security guards for the trip. Reportedly, this roadhouse is a locale where road building supplies are unloaded for ongoing work currently being conducted by the High Road Charter Company. But observations by the PCs and NPC encounters hint that other activities are occurring clandestinely... likely related to the Cult of the Dragon Queen. Party member Erzo (Drow Rogue) finds himself alone after the mysterious disappearance of his colleague. However, he is joined by two new PCs: Seren (Half-Elf Eldritch Knight) and Lathandis (Wood Elf Cleric), welcome additions to the campaign. The boys, along NPC Jamna Gleamsilver (Gnome Rogue), get hired by the High Road Charter Company to accompany a caravan headed out of Waterdeep, on the way to Neverwinter... purportedly. The caravan continues northward. Next stop: Daggerford. But before then, Erzo (Drow Rogue) is going to spend time intimidating passengers and use the nighttime hours to stealthily open crates in his insatiable search for loot. Mulinex (Elf Ranger/Druid) spends his time charming a young lady in a tavern at a Way Station, but is in for a surprise as to her identity. Two new NPCs are introduced into the campaign: a mischievous gnome quite adept at circumlocution, and a mysterious human wearing a wool hat over his bald head... hmmm, what does that mean? The PCs depart Beregost, continuing on their northward trek along The Coast Way, eventually reaching Baldur's Gate.
