Interesting show of Metro Detroit stories today. In the fun category, recently a listener asked why Norris Howard isn't the Baron of Brightmoor, because of the alliteration. He explains why he's the Prince. There was so much demand for Michigan Central's big concert that it sold out - and so have all the tickets for the tour since we recorded this episode and posted. So I won't include that link. Then we get into the race for U.S. House, where Adam Hollier didn't get enough valid signatures to make the ballot, dealing a blow to the possibility of black representation for Detroit and nearby areas. Norris gets into why it matters, but also people need to get their stuff together. We're keeping it hot on today's episode - even if we're a bit tired after watching Detroit City beat the MLS side, Houston Dynamo, in super duper late overtime. Today's episode... 00:52 - Why we're so tired today (all hail Saldaña!)  03:52 - The balcony of the Fox bounces as the crowd loses their minds for Gunna. Norris then shares why it's ok to embrace the "uncle" phase of life, grab a lawn chair and hit the Jazzfest. 08:26 - A report says that a plan is being floated to put Wayne County all-in on transit. Many municipalities in the county - including some of the largest like Livonia and Canton - do not have any SMART service, and County Exec Evans says the county needs the service to compete. We discuss. 18:46 - There's drama between one of the challengers for the 13th district - Adam Hollier - and U.S. Congressman Shri Thanadar and a question over signatures. But we use the news to talk about the elephant in the room - that if you're someone who wants to unseat an incumbent (and we're not taking a side in this) - you need to have one challenger in the primary. Not multiple. And there's a big gap in brand knowledge of the challengers. Hosts Adolph Mongo, Jim Nardone and Allan Lengel talk with Adam Hollier, Democratic candidate for the 13th Congressional District, who argues that Democratic incumbent Congressman Shri Thanedar spends more of his budget on mailings, robocalls and billboards than on staff to serve constituents.Hollier, who appeared Thursday on the videocast/podcast of "Detroit in Black and White" (see show below), says most Michigan Congress members have a staff of 20 or so to serve constituents, but Thanedar only has a few dedicated to constituent services. He accuses Thanedar of being more committed to getting re-elected and spending money promoting himself than on doing his job.Thanedar responded Friday afternoon via email:"Our office is typically staffed with 20 team members including 11 full-time staff, 1 part-time staff, 6 interns and 2 fellows. This staffing level has allowed us to address over 1400 constituent cases with 88% completion rate, and a response time of 24 to 48 hours."On the legislative front, 17 bills were sponsored in the first 15 months, two of which passed in the house and one signed by President Biden into law, over 300 bills co-sponsored, and we  communicated to over hundred thousand constituents on a regular basis."Additionally, following the 2020 redistricting in Michigan, (My) current district now includes areas previously served by Brenda Lawrence (40%), Debbie Dingell (26%), and Rashida Tlaib (34%). This restructuring led to considerable confusion among constituents, both within and outside our new boundaries. As a result, my office received calls from constituents of neighboring congresswomen and vice versa. To address this, we significantly ramped up our outreach efforts through various media. Which resulted in a quadrupling of constituent calls from January 2023 to January 2024."

The measure was known as Prop 2. Since then, a bipartisan commission of 13 citizens were selected through an application process to become redistricting commissioners. On December 28th, the commission voted to adopt new state legislative and congressional maps for the state. Some say that Democrats now have a competitive advantage to knocking off the Republican majority. Critics in the community and the legislature say that the new maps marginalize the power of Black voters in Detroit.

Join Senator Adam Hollier and Dr. Daniel J. Hurley, CEO of the Michigan Association of State Universities, as they discuss the importance of higher education and how families can find the funds to attend. Public education is for the public good. Our higher education budget has remained stagnant for years, which is why Gov. Gretchen Whitmer wants to boost funding, grants and scholarships for associate and bachelor degree programs. Michigan families shouldn't have to go broke when their kids attend a public university, and it's time for the state to step up its investment in our schools. Sen. Adam Hollier (D–Detroit) represents citizens of the 2nd District in Wayne County that includes the cities of Detroit, Grosse Pointe, Grosse Pointe Farms, Grosse Pointe Park, Grosse Pointe Woods, Hamtramck, Harper Woods and Highland Park, and the Village of Grosse Pointe Shores. He is an avid problem solver and is leading Michigan to do better.
