Daily News Brief by TRT World

This is TRT World's Daily News Brief for Friday, April 5th *) Israel promises to open Gaza aid routes after US arm-twisting Israel has said it will allow ‘temporary' aid deliveries across its fence with northern Gaza, Prime Minister Netanyahu's office announced after a tense warning phone call from US President Joe Biden. The announcement coincides with increased international scrutiny of Israel after it accepted responsibility for a strike that killed seven employees of the US-based charity World Central Kitchen. The statement from the prime minister's office outlined that Israel will allow the temporary delivery of humanitarian aid through Asdood Port and Erez crossing, known as Beit Hanoun to Palestinians. *) Israel ramps up defence, fearing Iran's retaliation The Israeli military is bolstering its defences following a deadly strike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus that reportedly killed 16 people, including seven Iranian Revolutionary Guard members has led to threats of retaliation. Israeli army spokesman Daniel Hagari confirmed the measures, which include suspending leave for combat units, blocking GPS signals in certain areas, and increasing manpower. *) Russia says destroyed over 40 airborne targets in Rostov-on-don The governor of Russia's Rostov-on-Don region has said air defence units destroyed more than 40 aerial targets, although an electricity substation was damaged. Writing on the Telegram messaging app, Vasily Golubev said the drone strikes had focused on the Morozovsk district, north-east of Rostov-on-Don, which lies on Ukraine's eastern border. *) Madagascar seeks removal of EU envoy who criticised law for child rapists Madagascar has demanded that the EU replace its ambassador to the island nation after she criticised a new law passed in February that allows child rapists to be chemically and surgically castrated. The request came after the EU's ambassador, Isabelle Delattre Burger, denounced the law contrary to international norms and Madagascar's constitution. The EU is evaluating the demand in consultation with the Malagasy government, with the regular rotation of ambassadors due in September. And finally… *) Missing dog found 2,000 miles from California home A dog that went missing in California has been found more than 3,000 kilometres away in suburban Detroit, leading to a dramatic reunion with her owners. Police picked up Mishka, a terrier mix who went missing last July, and took her to a shelter after a resident reported a stray dog near Harper Woods in the Midwestern state of Michigan. Staff at the Grosse Pointe Animal Adoption Society found that she had a microchip that identified her owners live 3,771 kilometres away in San Diego — making it unclear how she had travelled so far. After being alerted, her owner Mehrad Houman and his family will fly back to California Mishka after being examined by a veterinarian. And that's your daily news brief from TRT World. We welcome Chris Marino back to the show! Chris was on episodes 51 and 52 of Journey of the Rhode Runner when he ran his first Boston Marathon in 2021. Then on December 3, 2022, while out on a run, Chris survived a widowmaker heart attack (which has a 10-20% survival rate). Not only has Chris survived, but is thriving. On April 15, 2024, Chris will be running his first Boston Marathon since his heart attack! In addition to his heart attack, we discuss Chris' son Braden and his rare disease, Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD), which prompted Chris to run the Boston Marathon to begin with. And if this was not enough to take in, 3 weeks before Chris' heart attack, his wife Katie suffered a seizure! In this epic-sode, we dive deep into each of these events. You will be truly inspired by this incredible Marino family! While many people would buckle under any of these events, the Marino family has not only survived, but are thriving!  This episode is also dedicated to the 22 Too Many hero: Ellis Weems “Ellis was born in Landsthul, W. Ellis was my only child, and my mirror image who left this Earth far too soon. He loved life, and loved to put a smile on the faces of those who came in contact with him. He was active in soccer, baseball and an extreme skateboarder. He loved to eat – my goodness, my grocery bill stayed high when he was home! He was a free-spirit; always soaking up the information he received from others so that he can master it in his own life. I miss his smile and our conversations about life. I miss my Son every single day…15 July 2016 will be a constant reminder that the joy of my life is no longer here…” shared by his mom, Theresa In the spring of 2017, Theresa ran a 5k in memory of Ellis at Ft. Former students recall legendary record hops of the 1960s, '70s and '80s at Notre Dame High, and their benefactor, Fr. Bryson Show notes: (0:04) The narrator sets the scene of the 1960s, when teenagers looked forward to Friday nights at the record hops at Notre Dame High School in Harper Woods. Those legendary memories weren't complete without the memory of Fr. John “Hollywood” Bryson, a Marist priest who rubbed shoulders with celebrities and brought in the era's hottest acts to play sets. (2:26) Fr. Bryson's former students, including musician Simone Vitale, actor Dave Coulier (of “Full House” fame) and Notre Dame alum Jerry Alderman describe their memories of “the rock ‘n' roll priest.” (6:28) Alderman talks about serving as a DJ for Fr. Bryson's legendary dances. Often, this led to opportunities to meet stars in the music industry — and even to pick up girls. (13:27) Vitale recalls the impact Fr. Bryson had on his budding music career, particularly the humility he instilled in his students. Fr. Bryson's rules helped keep students with “big egos” on the straight and narrow. (16:47) Coulier, who played “Uncle Joey” on the hit 1990s sitcom “Full House,” talks about how Fr. Bryson identified talent in students — especially those who might otherwise be dismissed as a “class clown.” (23:05) Notre Dame High School Alumni Association president Jim Mandl recalls Fr. Bryson's legendary jukebox, and how he was known for playing songs in the school cafeteria. (26:08) Alderman remembers how Fr. Bryson didn't just understand young people — he cared deeply for his students and worked to ensure they made the most of the gifts God gave them. (27:12) Vitale talks about the excitement of the era, the unrepeatable music and the legendary record hops that Fr. Bryson and others made famous. Vitale agrees with others' assessment: There will never be another Fr. John “Hollywood” Bryson. CHAPter ONE: (6) Wolverines and (8) Spartans are both 7-0 and are kicking off at noon on Saturday. How hyped are we for this huge game? ESPN's "College GameDay" is coming. Fox's "Big Noon Kickoff," too. The rivals are meeting as unbeatens for the first time since 2010, and as top-10 teams for the first time since 1964.But all you need to know about the hype and anticipation surrounding Saturday's noon kickoff for Michigan-Michigan State in East Lansing is this: Dan Racey just sold a parking pass for $775.Yes, a parking pass — which, sure, doubles as a tailgate home, but still."It's been a while," Racey, president of west Michigan-based Row2Tickets, said when asked the last time he's seen this kind of demand for tickets or parking passes for this game. "We've seen this kind of craziness more for Michigan-Michigan State basketball the last few years."A week or two ago, demand really took off."Spartan Stadium seats about 75,000 fans, and every inch of real estate sandwiched between Shaw Lane and Red Cedar Road is expected to be accounted for Saturday — for the first time in several years. There have been pockets of empty seats for all of Michigan State's games in recent years, including an entirely empty stadium in 2020, because of the COVID-19 pandemic.Oct. 30, 2021, will make up for that, to be sure.Tickets for the game are sold out, but plenty available on secondary markets, for those willing to pay, and pay significantly. On StubHub on Tuesday afternoon, the cheapest get-in price was about $230, and that was for a general-admission student ticket, and just one ticket. To get multiple seats together, the price goes up to $260. To get good seats together, like in the lower bowl, the price goes through the roof from $500 to $1,900.Michigan has lost an in-state commitment to the 2022 class, three-star receiver Tay'shawn Trent from Harper Woods announced Tuesday.Trent, in a post Tuesday on Twitter, thanked Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh, offensive coordinator Josh Gattis and safeties coach Ron Bellamy for offer him “the opportunity of a life time” but was “dropping” is commitment.“I will always be a wolverine fan as I grew up watching them but God has other plans for me,” Trent wrote.CHAPter TWO: The SOLions are now 0-7 and lost to the golden boy Matt Stafford. Are there such things as moral victories? What was it like watching 9 play against his old squad? Lions release defensive back Daryl WorleyA former third-round draft pick with 54 starts under his belt, Worley had signed to the Lions practice squad in September and was promoted to the main roster a week later. He appeared in two games for Detroit, Week 4 against Chicago and Sunday against the Rams. CHAPter THREE: One team looks like it is starting to turn the corner and another team looks like it could be the worst team in their league. Red Wings and Pistons, who has impressed us on those squads? Pistons' Killian Hayes finds scoring touch, but work remains on defenseAtlanta — Generally, there isn't much to take from an 18-point loss. The Pistons followed their 15-point loss to the Chicago Bulls with another double-digit defeat on Monday night against the Atlanta Hawks. It's an 0-3 start to the season, they're without Jerami Grant, their leading scorer, and they've shot the ball poorly in all three games. Even their defense, which was their silver lining in the first two games, withered with the warmer weather.CHAPter FOUR: World Series Game One is tonight. Braves are in H-Town to take on the Astros. Who we got and whats interesting about the 2021 Fall Classic? FITH CHAPter: Halloween shenanigans. Are we big Halloween guys? Dressing up, eating candy, being terrified? At 15 years old I dreamed of becoming a dental entrepreneur.  I was drawn to the medical and technical aspects of dentistry and recognized that this career could fulfill my desire to help people as well as allow me to be my own boss. Through planning, focus and persistence I earned my bachelor's degree in biology at age 19. I graduated with honors from the University of Detroit Mercy, and was immediately accepted into their school of dentistry. While many students need to complete a master's degree before getting accepted into dental school, I was competitive enough to skip this step.  I systematically planned my class schedule with the intention of graduating from the program in two years instead of four. Other students began to notice my progress and success and started asking themselves “How did she do it?”  I was more than happy to share the secrets to my academic success and the strategies that allowed me to finish two years ahead of schedule. This began my secondary career of mentoring and coaching, and I realized how fulfilling it is to help others reach their potential. In 2012, at the age of 23, I graduated and started my career working in a small private practice and a large group practice.  In the large group practice, I gained hands-on experience in dentistry and was able to observe the nuts and bolts of running a dental business.  In the small private practice, I quickly realized that the corporate, cookie-cutter approach was not for me. When this practice became available for purchase, I entered into a partnership with three other dentists in the large practice, acquiring the business and eventually helping my partners to acquire several additional dental practices.  I gained invaluable experience in how to transition existing dental practices. With hands-on experience, I learned how to maintain the character and integrity of the practice, updating technology, equipment and systems where necessary. After three years of partnership, I was ready to go out on my own, negotiating with my partners to be the sole owner of my first acquisition in Clarkston. I was well on my way to reaching a goal I set upon graduation – to buy one practice each year before I turned 30.Fast forward to the present — I've met my goal by owning practices in Clarkston, Harper Woods, Shelby Township, the Village of Franklin, Metamora, Waterford, Fenton and Berkley, Michigan. All the practices have been united under one brand, BRUSH.RINSE.FLOSS.TM, integrating cultures, systems and processes to create the highest level of practice and profit. When I became an elected official last year, winning a seat on Harper Woods City Council, I knew I wanted to make an impact by having deeper political conversations. I started "Quick to Politic" as a podcast idea. The Coronavirus Pandemic has created a renewed need to have conversations around what the future holds in terms of policy and the economy. It made me want to deep dive, reach across the isles, and bridge differing perspectives to have a discourse around how to be better humans. The social justice movements that have been happening in our communities and indeed around the country have writ large the need to have tough conversations that move the needle forward in the name of true systemic change. Today our guest is someone who I may have had disagreements with but we sat down for a conversation to see how we can get on the same page on issues related to pushing the needle on social justice. Questions for Teferi Brent 1. Tell me about yourself, you're an activist, minster and man who stands up for justice in communities all across metro Detroit. 2. What were your thoughts on the vice-presidential debates? 3. You are quoted as saying Harper Woods is like 1950s Mississippi. Where some ways, in your estimation Harper Woods can change? 4. What are your thoughts on the evolution on the Black Lives Matter movement? --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/ernestine-lyons/support

Ernestine Lyons hosts Quick to Politic with guest Colton Dale Colton Dale grew up in Harper Woods to a working-class family that experienced the typical hardships of modern American life. He took an interest in policy and politics in high school when learning about history, government, and especially environmental science. Today, with a bachelor's degree in political science and masters degree in public administration from Wayne State University,. He has previous experience in political organizing, campaign management, and government communications. Actively involved in Democratic politics at the statewide and local level, he is also the 2nd Vice President of the Grosse Point Democratic Club. 1. What sparked your interest in politics in particular? And how will Democrats navigate the sea of social upheaval and systemic change as a party? It seems the party is fractured with young extremists on the far right (the Bernies and the AOCs) and then the moderates. 2. You work in small business development, tell us more about that. 3. I am a firm believer that economic justice is social justice. How can the metro Detroit small business ecosystem continue to bolster and encourage inclusive innovation that catalyzes talent for economic and community development? 4. You have been a campaign manager, planning specialist, and very active with the democratic party. What's next for you? Political office or are you seeking to be more of a problem solver for fixing systems.
