Jews are no strangers to horror. They've encountered and dealt with horrifying events throughout their history - exile, destruction of two temples, expulsion, blood libels, ghettoization, genocide, terrorism. The list goes on and on. And so, it's perhaps not surprising that Jewish critics and filmmakers have done some really interesting work in the horror film genre, creating what scholar Adam Lowenstein refers to as Jewish horror, although what that term means, exactly, is complicated. In this episode. Lowenstein, a professor of English and film and media studies at the University of Pittsburgh, guides us through the history of Jewish horror films, from The Golem in 1920 to the present day, exploring how Jewish (and sometimes non-Jewish) filmmakers have used film to investigate questions around what it means to be human, and the dark forces within us that, when unleashed can lead to dehumanization and horror.

In this episode, hosts Katherine Troyer and Anthony Tresca conclude their investigation into the Nightmare franchise as they discuss the 2010 horror film A Nightmare on Elm Street.  Episode Highlights: We explore the ways that this film contrasts, and even actively pushes against, the original 1984 film. Looking at the 2010 film's take on a more realistic horror, a more serious Freddy, and a less feminist perspective, we argue that this remake loses the ambiguity and complexity present in the original film. And, of course, we mourn the loss of Robert Englund as Freddy.  A Dose of Scholarship: We discuss Adam Lowenstein's "Alone on Elm Street" and Kyle Christensen's "'Look What You Did to Me!': (Anti)Feminism and Extratextuality in the Remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010).  This podcast episode first aired on December 31, 2021. My guest today is Adam Lowenstein returning to the podcast. Adam is the author of Reframe the day, embracing the craft of life one day at a time, which outlines 10 practices for creating a more filling life. Adam briefed, as he spent eight years working in the American government in politics, most recently as a speechwriter and a strategic communication advisor in the United States Senate today. Adam lives in London with his partner, Erin, and frequently writes about politics, work, and life. As I said, this is Adam's second time on the podcast. And we left our first conversation, which I'll link in the show notes with many cliffhangers and much more to unpack. We took a few weeks and reconnected. And in this conversation, we spend a lot of our time talking around achievement and reorienting the goalpost of our life and how we get swept up by short-term thinking and what we're doing as a selfish pursuit when trying to lead a more fulfilling life. In reality, you should try to develop yourself to be the best version of yourself because you can be a better person for those you care about. And then by proxy for the world. And we spend some time near the end of this conversation, talking about voting. This podcast is releasing right as the first presidential debate between Joe Biden and Donald Trump. And we all know how that went. This podcast couldn't be any more timely because I can't see a more important time that we need as many of us to get out there and speak our minds and do what we can do in a democracy. We have more power individually than we think we do. If we all decided to speak on something or decided to talk with each other at the very least, we could create a groundswell. And I think we can do that. And toward the end, I said it, and he reiterated that the point of podcasting and the point of being an active and engaged citizen is changing the world one conversation at a time. I can totally get behind that. I hope that you take something away from this conversation. Please enjoy this conversation with Adam Lowenstein. It had been rumored for some time throughout this summer but earlier this week it finally happened. Danny Ainge pulled the trigger and sent Isaiah Thomas, Jae Crowder, Ante Zizic and the Nets 2018 1st round pick to the Cleveland Cavaliers in exchange for Kyrie Irving. Kyrie Irving waived the trade kicker he had in his contract which would have resulted in him getting another 3 million dollars added to his salary in order to help the deal go through. Fans in Boston however are torn on the deal. Most are disappointed to see Thomas leave as Isaiah Thomas proved to be the heart and soul of this team last season that made it all the way to the Eastern Conference Finals before losing to Irving, Lebron and the Cavs. We will discuss our feelings and look at what this means for the Celtics in terms of the money on the books. Meanwhile the NBA has finally released the schedules for the 2017/18 season. The Boston Celtics have been chosen to open up the regular season on October 17th as part of a TNT Double Header that will see in game 1 the Celtics travel to Cleveland to take on Lebron James alongside Isaiah Thomas, Jae Crowder and the defending Eastern Conference Champion Cleveland Cavaliers at 8pm Eastern Time. That game will be followed by the Warriors hosting the Rockets. The Celtics also made the Christmas Day schedule as they will faceoff with John Wall and the Washington Wizards at the TD Garden in Boston at 5:30pm ET on ABC. The Celtics Talk Crew will announce the full 82 game schedule and give their thoughts on the NBA's decision to push the season up 2 weeks in order to make the schedules for the teams more easier by going down on the number of back to backs the teams will have to deal with. The end of the NBA regular season is over and its time for the NBA Playoffs. The Celtics despite being the most injured team in the Eastern Conference and 2nd most injured team throughout the entire season behind only the Los Angeles Clippers are going to the playoffs as the top team in the Eastern Conference. on our last show the Celtics had fallen out of 1st place in the East after losing their final showdown with Lebron and the Cavs giving the Cavs a 1 game lead over the Celtics for 1st. Then the Celtics went on to lose the very next night to the Atlanta Hawks to make it a 1.5 game lead for the Cavs. Since that point the Celtics went on a 3-0 winning streak knocking off the Hornets, Nets and Bucks while the Cavs would lose 4 in a row after beating the Celtics. This resulted in the Celtics finished the season 53-29 while Lebron and the Cavs finished 51-31. The Celtics as the #1 seed will now play the #8 seed Chicago Bulls while the Cavs will face the #7 seeded Pacers. The Raptors finished in the #3 spot and they will play the #6 seed Milwaukee Bucks. The Washington Wizards as the #4 seed will face the #5 seeded Hawks. We will discuss what happened over the last week with the Celtics 3 wins and what the Celtics winning the Eastern Conference title in the regular season means in the long run for the rebuild. As well as what are some of the other ramifications the other matchups in the East could have on the Celtics in terms of their offseason plans. We will be joined by Adam Lowenstein aka Stats Adam.

We are 11 days into the NBA Free Agency period. The Celtics despite knock managing to make a trade at the NBA Draft did manage to still make a splash in the Free Agency pool just not as big a splash as Celtics fan's were hoping. The Celtics signed Atlanta Hawks center Al Horford to a 4 year deal $113 Million dollar deal. The Celtic's were hoping that this would help get Kevin Durant to come to Boston. The Horford deal managed to get Durant to let the Celtics finish in his top 3 but he ultimately chose to join the Golden State Warriors a move that angered many fans not only Celtics but fans of every other team not in Golden State of Cleveland. So with the addition of Al Horford the Celtics have been looked as the biggest threat to the Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference but not given much of a shot to beat them. The Al Horford signing was announced on June 2nd. Since then what else has Danny Ainge done. Did he manage to get any other legit stars to come this way like a Dwayne Wade for example. Or did he opt to focus on setting the Celtics up for a shot at Durant and the rest of the star loaded free agency pool in 2017 knowing Durants deal is a 1 year deal with the Warriors with a player option in the 2nd year. Meanwhile the Celtics summer league team has also kicked off. This is where the Celtics fan's will get to see some of the top future Celtics show off their skills. Since the last episode of Celtics Talk Radio. The Celtics have played 7 games. First facing off with the Phoenix Suns at TD Garden. Then the Celtics took on a 6 day 3 game road trip. Making stops in Washington to face the Wizards. Then traveled to Dallas to take on the Mavericks. Then went up to Toronto to take on the Raptors. The Celtics then returned home to face off with the Chicago Bulls before going back off on the road for 2 games first in Philadelphia to face the 76ers and then another trip to Washington to face the Wizards on their court for the 2nd time in less then 2 weeks. Going into this stretch the Celtics had just snapped a 4 game losing streak by beating Paul George and the Indiana Pacers for the 1st time this season. The Celtics were just on outside of the playoff picture in the Eastern Conference trailing the 8th seeded Orlando Magic by a 1/2 game after that win vs the Pacers. So the question is now did the Celtics right the ship. The players know that the NBA Trade Deadline is on the horizon and some are playing for their right to remain on the team as they know the Celtics will be buyers rather the Sellers at the trade Deadline this season due to all the assets Danny Ainge has in his back pocket. So did the Celtic's manage to get back on track and start rising up in the standings in the Eastern Conference. Or was the win against the Pacers just a fluke and the team is still having issues. Meanwhile with less then a month to go before the NBA Trade Deadline. What are the latest rumors coming out that Celtics fans will need to keep an eye out for. We will discuss those stories with Adam Lowenstein.

The Celtics started the 2015/16 season 1-3 in their first 4 games. The Celtics Talk Crew on episode 112 discussed what occurred in those first 4 games. What issues the Celtics needed to address going into their next 4 games against 4 playoff caliber teams and what Brad Stevens needed to do about the rotations to try and get the Celtics team rolling. Since that show the Celtics played 3 games which inlcuded their first back to back of the season. They hosted the Washington Wizards on 11/6. Then played at the Milwaukee Bucks on 11/10 then the very next night hosted the Indiana Pacers in a rematch of the Celtics 4th game of the season. Does it appear they have finally figured things out after starting the season 1-4 or did they continue to struggle. What should we expect going into the Celtics next handful of games where they will have to face the team who was the #1 seed in the Eastern Conference last season in the Atlanta Hawks then Kevin Durant and the Thunder, James Harden and the Rockets, and Dirk Nowitzki and the Mavericks. Does it look like the Celtics are ready to take on those teams or should Celtic fans expect more losses as we give the team more time to gel. Your Celtics Talk Crew will be joined by Adam Lowenstein aka Stats Adam to discuss those questions.

From the question of whether the beginning or ending of the season will be more important for the Celtic's. Thats right the 82 game regular season in the NBA has finally come to an end. The Celtics started this season as a team that was destined for the NBA lottery. The chances for that destiny being achieved went up when Danny Ainge traded Rajon Rondo to the Dallas Mavericks. Everyone thought for sure this teams destiny was a lock once Ainge traded Jeff Green. The fan's starting talking about going into tank mode for the 2nd season in a row. But instead the Celtics opted to fight in what was a weak Eastern Conference and show the rest of the NBA that they are not far from being able to compete with the NBA'S elite teams despite those teams having all-stars on their roster and Boston having none. The Celtics found themselves in the middle of a 4 team race going into the final week of the NBA regular season for the 7th and 8th spots in the Eastern Conference. The Celtics with no all-star players were in the lead of that 4 team race ahead of 3 teams that everyone thought was a lock for the NBA playoffs before the season started. The Celtics were ahead of a Brooklyn Nets team who had Joe Johnson, Deron Williams and Brook Lopez leading them in their fight for a playoff spot. They were ahead of the Miami Heat who of course did not have Chris Bosh but still had Dwayne Wade, Luol Deng and added Goran Dragic at the trade deadline. They were also ahead of the team that has been one of the top teams in the Eastern Conference the last few seasons along with Miami which is the Indiana Pacers and yet the Pacers had Roy HIbbert and George Hill virtually all season. The Celtics with no Rondo, no Green and while having no Jared Sullinger managed to catch and pass those 3 teams and have the edge going into the final week. So now we will discuss how did the final week end. Did the Celtics do what many thought was impossible and get to the NBA playoffs if so who will they face or are they headed to the lottery again. We recap the season with Adam Lowenstein

The NBA Trade Deadline has come and gone. Danny Ainge made 2 moves shipping away Marcus Thorton and a 2016 first round pick courtesy of the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Phoenix Suns in exchange for Isaiah Thomas. Ainge then sent Tayshaun Prince to the Detroit Pistons in exchange for Jonas Jerebko and Luigi Datome. The Celtic's began the 2nd half of the NBA season taking on the Sacramento Kings in Sacramento. The Celtics are among 6 teams all fighting for the final 2 playoff spots in the eastern conference. The Celtics have a good shot to make the NBA playoffs despite not having any major stars and their chances of making the playoffs went up with the way the trade deadline went seeing teams like the Nets trade away players like Kevin Garnett and teams like the Heat lose players to season ending injurys like Chris Bosh with blood clot's. So it looks like it will be the Celtics fighting for the playoffs rather then tanking. We will breakdown the latest new's as well as hot Thomas, Jerebko and Datome have faired in their first week as Celtic's. Has Thomas shown he can be that difference maker many thought he would be after the team traded for him or did losing a 3 point shooter like Thorton come out to be too much. ADAM LOWENSTEIN aka Stats Adam will join the Celtics Talk Crew to discuss the Celtics performances in the back end of their western conference road trip coming out of the All-Star break

Its been roughly 3 weeks since the NBA free agency period began. The Celtic's had 12 days to use their trade exception which they received in the Paul Pierce trade that was worth $10,275,136. Using that trade exception would allow the Celtics to make a trade without giving up any players while allowing the other team to get rid of one of their players and not take back any players salaries. This trade exception would be something many teams looking to sign players like Lebron James and Carmelo Anthony would want as it gives them that money in cap space virtually. The Celtic's had till July 12th to use that trade exception. The Celtics also had roughly 10 million dollars to use in cap space. Through the first 24 hours of the free agency period the Celtics called several players who didnt make much money but are impact players like Gordon Hayward of the Utah Jazz. The Celtics Talk Crew will be joined by Adam Lowenstein from Sports Hub and Matt Rury from CLNS Radio Program Director to discuss the latest signings and rumors
