"Everybody wants to eat, but Few Will Hunt." Today on the podcast with Joey Bowen and Drew Beech, co-founders of the apparel brand and community Few Will Hunt. Joey and Drew spent their daily commutes through the gritty streets of Philadelphia on the phone for a year straight. On these calls, they talked about business and life ā especially the trends of self-entitlement and shortcut-seeking they witnessed in society. These trends made them feel alone in an ever-softening world. āAre we the only ones that still believe in the power of hard work?ā Drew asked. Joey responded, āIt's like we say at my hunting cabin ā everybody wants to eat, but few will hunt.ā This statement perfectly summed up their frustrations with society. It became their mantra. On this podcast episode, Jordan Criss returns for a long-overdue discussion on Life and Fulfillment. We start the conversation with the idea that most people are actively disengaged with what they spend most of their time. From there, we cover imposter syndrome, healthy habits, procrastination, and focusing on what matters most to you regardless of the current outcome. Life is about playing a long game. Toward the end of the conversation, I was reminded of a book called The Road to Character. One of the core messages is to think more deeply about the eulogy virtues than resume virtues since modern life is more focused on the latter. Ultimately, each of us has to figure out what fits best for our life; no matter what, it will be a process. The faster you embrace the process, the less painful it will be. So with that, I pass this off to the listener. What else can we explore if you've encountered the mentioned sources, your experiences, or other related ideas? Finally, we come to the season finale of The Last of Us, season 1. Since starting our breakdowns, we have been excited about this very conversation. Would viewers of the show be challenged with the ending as much as the game challenged audiences over a decade ago? Would audiences be given enough to connect with to feel for Joel's position in the story? Ultimately, the story of The Last of Us boils down to this last episode. It asks audiences what they would do if this were their life and the life of someone they have come to care about. So much moral ambiguity makes this season finale one of the best and remains hotly debated. So in closing, does the show do the game justice, and what is your feeling on the actions Joel takes? Today's podcast continues our breakdown of The Last of Us on HBO with episodes seven and eight. Episode seven dives into more of Ellie's past and gives the audience a view of what Ellie said when it wasn't the first time she had used a gun. Living in this world is harsh for even the youngest people. There isn't much hope to spare. Picking up with episode 8 drops us right back into the urgency of Joel's condition. Episode 8 feels pivotal in many ways. The first gives us a face to evil in the show, quickly capturing the audience. Also, giving Ellie the challenge of her life; can she survive without Joel? But not without Ellie being traumatized dramatically by the experience. While the audience is led to believe Joel will make a heroic rescue, we don't get that exactly, but Joel saves Ellie's soul right when she's about to fall over the edge. Today's podcast continues our breakdown of The Last of Us on HBO with episode six. Episode six continues the journey of Ellie and Joel, but they have moved much further west with a time jump of three months. We find them in the snowy mountains as they are nearing where Tommy's last location. Ellie and Joel are stopped on the road by a group of people with horses, but they are not immediately hostile. They are brought to the town of Jackson, a safe haven community that seems more self-sufficient and free than FEDRA or the Fireflies have shown was possible thus far. Tommy is found living among them, better off than Joel thought possible. Without the goal to save his brother, Joel begins to doubt he can see the mission through to get Ellie to the Fireflies and asks Tommy to complete the journey. Joel is confronted with self-doubt but doesn't give Ellie a choice of who should finish the journey until near the end of the episode, and we see a massive shift in trust between them as they set back out on their journey. The episode concludes with Joel being injured by scavengers leaving Ellie alone to fend for herself and attempt to save Joel's life. Today's podcast continues our breakdown of The Last of Us on HBO with episode five. Episode five continues by giving us the backstory on Sam and Henry shortly after the FEDRA are overthrown in the city. From that, we catch up to the present, where the previous episode left off with Joel and Ellie. From there, we are given more information on Kathleen and the group. Much of our contention in this episode was how convincing the motivations of Kathleen were. The episode's climax is the confrontation from Kathleen's group as they catch up with Joel and the crew and attempt to flee the city. Everything erupts in chaos, with the infected being released from underground. We had some minor issues with how the lead-up to the climax was presented. All of our problems aside, the core of this episode was the emotional story between Sam and Henry. They were presented as a possible future of how Ellie and Joel may one day end up. This point is driven home in the closing scene as the group doesn't escape unscathed. The big question in this episode is would you want to continue living after losing the one you care about most? Today's podcast continues our breakdown of The Last of Us on HBO with episode four. Episode four continues the story of Joel and Ellie. We get some relationship-building while on the road. Still, they take a detour into Kanas city. Very quickly, something is off inside the city without FEDRA presence, and bandits attack them. Joel and Ellie fight their way through the encounter. We learn a bit more about who these bandits are, but most of this episode feels like a setup for the next episode. The episode closes with Joel letting the dad jokes get him, and finally, we see the rugged survivalist begin to let down his guard. Today's podcast continues our breakdown of The Last of Us on HBO with episode three. Episode three is, so far, the most significant departure from what those familiar with the game will see. While Joel and Ellie are still featured in the episode, we mostly follow the lives of two other survivors, Bill and Frank. Instead of facing the grim reality that the end of the world has in store for our characters, we face a different story. Ellie sees evidence of the government's execution of innocents during the early days of the pandemic. Back in 2007, Frank leaves Baltimore and stumbles upon the compound of Bill, a paranoid survivalist who reluctantly takes him in. The men begin a romance, sharing a love of music and food. Years later, Frank contacts Tess by radio and the two groups enter a tenuous friendship. In the present, Frank is terminally ill and asks Bill to assist his suicide after they marry. Bill, not wanting to live without Frank, kills himself as well. When Joel and Ellie arrive, they discover a letter Bill left for Joel. Bill wrote that protecting Frank gave his life meaning and that he has left Joel his supplies. Unbeknownst to Joel, Ellie takes Frank's pistol. They take Bill's truck and set out to find Tommy. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/feedingcuriosity/support

In today's episode, we are starting our breakdown of the newly released series The Last of Us based on the game of the same name! For those who want to remain entirely spoiler-free, this is not for you, but given the game has been out for some time, we assume most casual audiences will be curious enough to learn more about the source material. In this episode, we cover the major story beats, what we enjoyed and what we hope is to come in the story. Finally, we try to dive a little bit deeper into the show. As fans of the game, seeing an adaption done well is refreshing for us. Please enjoy this breakdown in episode one of The Last of Us! Let us know what you think! Summary of episode one: In 2003, a mass fungal infection sparked a global pandemic. Joel flees with his daughter, Sarah, and brother, Tommy; a soldier kills Sarah. Twenty years later, Joel lives in the Boston quarantine zone managed by the Federal Disaster Response Agency (FEDRA), working as a smuggler with his partner, Tess. When Tommy fails to contact them from Wyoming, they buy a car battery from a local dealer, Robert, but are double-crossed when he sells it to the Fireflies, a rebel group in open opposition against FEDRA. Attempting to retrieve it, Joel and Tess discover Marlene, the Fireflies' leader, who begs them to take Ellie to the Massachusetts State House in exchange for a working truck. While sneaking out, the three are caught by a soldier who tests them for the infection, revealing Ellie to be positive. Joel kills the soldier while Ellie claims to be immune. This episode was directed by Craig Mazin and co-written by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann. The series stars Pedro Pascal as Joel and Bella Ramsey as Ellie. In this week's episode, we break down the film The Whale. The film is directed by Darren Aronofsky, written by Samuel D. Hunter, and stars Brendan Fraser. The film is an emotional rollercoaster and leaves all of us feeling something. At the movie's core, we tried to determine whether this was a tragedy or a comedy. The result will vary for everyone but somewhere in the middle, leaving you conflicted. We spent a good time working on what the core theme of the film was, and we came to the conclusion it was gravitating toward honesty. The film calls for the characters to be honest with themselves and those closest to them. If you can do that from the heart, your life starts to fit together. As a call to action, I know that all of us have something left unsaid to someone important to us, so at the very least, saying something from the heart to someone who matters to you can be a gateway towards something better. In this episode, Joe and Erich reflect on 2022 and their direction in 2023. For a portion of this conversation, we take a step back to go over how the previous few years felt stagnant to lay the groundwork for the reemergence that started in late 2022. Around the middle of 2022, starting live streams with Joe since he moved to Nashville began to shift momentum. Erich continues to push himself psychically with runs and rides, which has led to a commitment to run in the Chicago Marathon in 2023. One big driving factor was the book The Comfort Crisis. The book's core is to get yourself more comfortable with the uncomfortable. From there, we see what Joe explores with his master's and Ph.D. We must zoom out and look at human culture, be critical, and ask what is working. Joe believes that each of us should aspire to aim for something greater. Meaning the goal should be aspirational. The likelihood you will accomplish the goal is small, but in setting the bar, you may embody the goal you set for yourself. Erich's Marathon Sponsor is Our Lady of Angels. https://secure.qgiv.com/event/teamola2023/account/1402109 Team Our Lady of the Angels will be running in the 2023 Bank of America Chicago Marathon to support the Mission of Our Lady of the Angels! Today's podcast will discuss the book Icarus Fallen: Search For Meaning In An Uncertain World by Chantal Delsol. An overview of the book: It would be difficult to find a more perceptive description of Western man and the world he now inhabits than that provided by Chantal Delsol in Icarus Fallen: The Search for Meaning in an Uncertain World. With style and clarity, Delsol likens contemporary Western man to the mythical figure Icarus, fallen back to earth after trying to reach the sun, alive but badly shaken and confused. During the twentieth century, Delsol argues, man flew too close to the sun of utopian ideology. Having been burned, he is now groping for a way to orient himself. But the ideas he once held so dear--inevitable progress, the possibility of limitless social and self-transformation--are no longer believable, and he has, for the most part, long since rejected the religious tradition that might have provided an anchor. Delsol's portrait is fascinating. She explains how we have come simultaneously to embrace the good but reject the truth; we have sacralized rights and democracy, lost our sense of tragedy, and embraced the idea of zero risk. Already a well-known political thinker in her native France, this is Delsol's first book to appear in English. Icarus Fallen should establish her as one of the most insightful social and cultural writers working on either side of the Atlantic. Hello everyone. And welcome back to another episode of feeding curiosity. In today's episode, we dive deeply into Netflix anime Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. In today's episode, We start with a discussion around Top Gun Maverick. And why this film, in particular, feels like a breath of fresh air compared to other sequels. Many sequels over the last decade, but a lack of the essence of what made the original films massive successes that have shaped our culture. The criticism we have of other films, like Star Wars, may seem harsh, but for many people, the stories have been ingrained into them. So when you get a highly anticipated sequel that the viewer's imagination has built upon over time. The filmmakers almost have no hope of meeting those expectations, but it doesn't mean it can't be done. To illustrate the essence capture idea. I'll turn to another foundational character Spider-Man. The most recent film Spider-Man away from home. It is an equal parts sequel but also taps into the nostalgia of past Spider-Man films, but what sets it apart is the nostalgia isn't only done in fan service but also serves the characters in the story. The story honored the past Spiderman and gave them a sense of closure from their original films. Telling a story isn't about power dynamics or some fractal in time but hints at something universal to our human experience. So the story of Peter Parker resonates with us, not because we know what it's like to have spider powers, but because we can relate to the sense of overwhelming responsibility and stumbling through our lives. Bring us back to Top Gun. The film works for many of the same reasons. Above, but it was not the sequel we wanted, but it was a sequel to the story Top Gun deserved. The bonus is that the filmmakers cared enough about the story to make it as immersive as possible, no matter how difficult it was to capture. Modern CGI is a great tool, but capturing real F-eighteens on camera will always be a more visceral experience. To that end, I will pass this off to you, the Listener. What are your thoughts on the currency of Hollywood? We are under the impression that we're on the edge of a creative Renaissance. We are rediscovering how to add meaning to our stories and hopefully lead to a world that is less cynical and empathetic to our current state. And with that, everyone. In this episode, Erich and Jordan discuss Matt Reeves' The Batman. We discussed what we enjoyed about different aspects of the film and compared it to its other superhero films. Naturally, we can't escape comparing it to the Nolan trilogy of Batman films. Overall, we enjoyed the film and looked forward to what comes next for this version of Batman. With that, we pass this off to you. What did you think of the film, and what are you hoping for next? You can watch The Batman on HBO Max on April 18th! This conversation was recorded before the deleted scene of the Joker was released. Erich had thought the character was two faces, given the scarred face seen in shadow. Erich and Jordan dive into the HBO show Euphoria in this episode. We covered themes, techniques, and character movements we enjoyed about the show. We also give our take based on the controversy the show has faced since it deals with mature topics set in high school. We believe that art in any more form allows for the audience to confront complex issues so that we may develop a better view of how others live or see the world. I'll leave it to the listeners; when it comes to art, what is the limit to which we can use graphic content to push audiences? Where should we draw the line? Erich and Jordan begin a new breakdown series for the Apple TV exclusive Foundation. The Foundation was originally a science fiction book written by Isaac Asimov. The series was initially published as a trilogy from 1951-53. It won the one-time Hugo Award for "Best All-Time Series" in 1966. The books recount the fall of a vast interstellar empire and the establishment of its eventual successor. They also feature his fictional science of psychohistory, in which the future course of the history of large populations can be predicted. The adaptation for the show is helmed by David S. Goyer and Josh Friedman. Asimov's daughter, Robyn Asimov serves as an executive producer. Casting includes Jared Harris as Hari Seldon, Lou Lobell as Gaal Dornick, and Lee Pace as Brother Day.
