Jamie Mulvaney sits down with Miles Toulmin, CEO of Alpha International and former church planter in Malaysia, for a conversation that moves from dramatic healings in Kuala Lumpur to the unprecedented spiritual hunger sweeping Gen Z across the Western world. Through extraordinary testimonies and practical wisdom, Miles makes a compelling case: real transformation comes from encountering the Holy Spirit. Catch up on the Flourish series from St Michael's Sunday talks: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLFbwp0n7VmNTukTESX4k6RefnzB_9HRWZ&si=HNDLvMySFCX9NyMp Miles shares stories that sound more like the book of Acts than modern church life—a Taoist medium of 40 years who had to be baptised that day to break free from spiritual oppression, a man healed of a slipped disc after a word of knowledge, and a Malaysian family that came to Christ one by one until the local temple sent undercover agents to their Alpha course. But beyond the remarkable testimonies, Miles offers deeply practical wisdom on how ordinary believers can step into the gifts of the Spirit with confidence. The conversation tackles questions many Christians are too afraid to ask: How do you know if a word of knowledge is really from God or just your imagination? What do you do when you've prayed for healing for years and nothing has changed? Why do spiritual gifts seem to work more powerfully outside the Western church? And what's behind the staggering statistic that Bible sales in the UK are up 134% in five years—with the King James Version as the bestseller? This episode is for: - Anyone who's read about the Holy Spirit in scripture but wonders why their experience feels so different - Church leaders wanting to move prayer ministry from the margins to the centre of congregational life - Believers who've been praying faithfully for breakthrough and are tempted to give up - Those curious about spiritual gifts but unsure how to start exercising them—Miles calls it ‘exercising the muscle' - Anyone tracking the remarkable spiritual awakening happening among Gen Z and wondering what comes next Miles reveals why the new Alpha series launching in May 2026 is targeting Gen Z as its bullseye, what he's learned about spiritual authority from a decade in Asia, and why he believes we're on the edge of a wonderful harvest—prepared by the faithful prayers of those who've ploughed tough ground for years. Before becoming CEO of Alpha, Miles was Vicar of Holy Trinity Bukit Bintang in Kuala Lumpur, and Associate Vicar of HTB in London. Creativity isn't optional in this moment, it's essential to what it means to be human and to follow Jesus in a rapidly changing world. In this conversation, I talk with Al Gordon about why imagination is under threat, how AI is reshaping our creative lives, and why the church is called to recover its role as a place that ignites creativity rather than suppresses it. We explore how the Holy Spirit fuels imagination, why wonder has faded in our culture, and what it looks like to move from inspiration to actually creating something that matters. Al Gordon leads SAINT, a thriving church on a mission to bring hope to the people of East London. He's the founder of RENAISSANCE, a global movement helping people encounter their Creator, be equipped as creatives, and empowering churches to become cathedrals of creativity. Watch or listen to this hope-filled conversation with Jason Ballard, Lead Pastor, Director and Founder of the Pastorate, being interviewed by Joanna la Fleur. In this episode, they discuss the challenges and opportunities facing the Church in Canada today. They explore why healthy pastors matter, how churches can raise up new leaders, and why there is still real hope for renewal and spiritual growth across Canada. In this episode, Jason and Joanna discuss: Jason's faith journey and how a childhood surrounded by Christian influences eventually led him to personally follow Jesus. How people today are discovering Christianity without any Biblical background and why churches must rethink how they disciple new believers. The urgent need for healthy pastors and why pastoral leadership is essential for the flourishing of communities across Canada. Practical ways pastors can cultivate healthy rhythms, spiritual practices, and supportive friendships in ministry. How churches can raise up the next generation of pastors and encourage people discerning a call to ministry. Why Jason believes this is actually a hopeful moment for the church in Canada, and why many people are newly open to faith conversations. Read the transcript: https://biblesociety.ca/transcript-scripture-untangled-s12-ep12 =====Jason is a lead pastor at The Way Church in Vancouver, BC and the director and founder of the Pastorate, a Canadian ministry dedicated to strengthening Canadian pastors. Leadership isn't first about strategy — it's about the inner life of the leader. In this episode, Jason Ballard (Lead Pastor at The Way Church, Founder of The Pastorate) takes us deep into the work God does within a leader: emotional awareness, spiritual rhythms, honest self-audit, and learning to lead from presence rather than pressure.Jason shares vulnerable lessons from his own formation — moments where pain became his teacher, where his passion accidentally steamrolled others, and where slowing down saved relationships. We explore the three awarenesses every leader needs in every room: self-awareness, other-awareness, and awareness of the Spirit. He also unpacks the “lost hard drive” story — where one leader's calm, gracious response discipled a teenager more deeply than any Sunday production ever could. This conversation is for pastors, planters, parents, and anyone who senses God shaping “the leader within.”About Jason:Jason is a lead pastor at The Way Church in Vancouver, BC and the director/founder of The Pastorate, a ministry dedicated to strengthening Canadian pastors. Today's episode features a conversation between Tammy Giffen, Lead Pastor of Groundswell Church in Turo Nova Scotia and Shaila Visser, National Director of Alpha Canada and Senior Vice President at Alpha International. It's a recording of a conversation that took place live in front of our Lead Pastor Fellowship cohort, two weeks ago when they were gathered together in Vancouver for a city meetup. Over the course of that week together, the cohort, made up of 15 pastors from across Canada, spent time learning from local pastors and leaders, touring local churches, and enjoying quality time together. This conversation between Tammy and Shaila was one of the sessions of the week that was designed to help encourage our cohort members and sharpen their pastoral imagination, specifically around the themes of evangelism, prayer, and ministry to Gen Alpha and Gen Z. Shaila shares how a late-night encounter with the Holy Spirit reframed her entire sense of calling and how that moment has shaped Alpha Canada's vision for the next generation. In this conversation, Shaila unpacks the four questions God gave her in the middle of the night and how they've become a compass for her leadership. She reflects on what it looks like to hold a big vision while cultivating deep spiritual rhythms of prayer and fasting, and why people across Canada are uniquely open to the gospel during this time.Along the way, Shaila highlights:Why naming 4.4 million Canadian high school students has expanded Alpha's vision for youth ministry. How Made for This, a national prayer initiative, is mobilizing churches to cover schools across the country. Why she believes Gen Alpha is more spiritually open than any generation in decades. How equipping students to run Alpha for their peers strengthens discipleship and mission. This conversation will encourage pastors to think bigger about the next generation, lean deeper into spiritual dependence, and not grow weary in ministry. Shaila closes with a moving word of encouragement: to keep going, for the sake of those who do not yet know Jesus.Show NotesShaila's WebsiteGen Alpha Data and Resource PackMade for This CampaignAlpha Student Leadership Collective Coram Deo Foundation Joseph Chung Scholarship PartnersThe work of strengthening pastors across Canada is only possible because of generous partners like you. There aren't many who can say that in the wake of their life there is a 24/7 prayer movement that has impacted half the nations on earth - but Pete Greig can. And though Pete's resume has marked the world, he sits down with Jason in a self-effacing way, calling pastors with conviction and sensitivity towards a life walking out the way of Jesus. In this conversation, Pete and Jason discuss the bewildering origin of the 24/7 prayer movement, how Kingdom work needs to be tethered to the local church, how pastors can rise to meet the moment we're in & more. We hope you are inspired by this episode with Pete Greig. Bio | Pete is a best-selling author, pastor and bewildered instigator of the 24-7 Prayer movement which has reached more than half the nations on earth. He is also the Senior Pastor of Emmaus Rd, Guildford, England, an Ambassador for the NGO Tearfund, and teaches at St Mellitus Theological College in London. For 7 years Pete served with the senior leadership team at HTB and Alpha International. Pete's publications include ‘Red Moon Rising‘, ‘God on Mute‘, ‘The Prayer Course', and ‘Dirty Glory'.
