My impressions of the most affordable, practical robot from Amazon, the Astro after having Astro for 2 months.
Hello! Welcome to a new year and a new Sniffer ep!This time, Amazon's Astro home robot was at CES this month, though it's still invitation-only. That got Cathi Bond thinking about both the approachable design, and possible future implications of bots in the home. Watch Amazon's promotional video here. Read a detailed review here.Nora Young came across this article about one author's encounter with AI-generated, rip-off "summaries" of his memoir. With more and more machine learning-generated music, images, and text, it has her thinking about a possible future of automated culture, where human-created work sits alongside a slush pile of automated knock-offs. She mentions this excellent article about the IP implications. You might also be interested in Nick Cave's response to a Cave-esque Chat GPT-generated lyric. All good wishes for 2023!

“Astro is our first consumer robot. It's not going to be our last.” Ken Washington, the executive in charge of Amazon's first home robot, speaks confidently about the future despite mixed reviews and early skepticism about Astro's usefulness. A nuclear engineer by training, Washington was chief technology officer at Ford Motor Co., overseeing initiatives including autonomous vehicles, before joining Amazon as VP of consumer robotics last year. He sat down with us at Amazon re:MARS in Las Vegas. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Ken Washington, who leads Amazon's consumer robotics team, talks about the company's compact wheeled robot called Astro. Ken talked about Astro's evolution, it's popular and possible use cases, and what might be in store in the future.
It's going to be a long time before robots replace sports mascots, but it might be better for one of our GeekWire colleagues when they do. That's one of the more lighthearted takeaways from our return trip to Pittsburgh, where GeekWire co-founder John Cook somehow managed to make enemies with yet another pro sports mascot, but we also came away with some more fundamental insights into the state of robots, automation and artificial intelligence: Supply chain challenges and labor shortages are changing the national conversation about automation, and accelerating adoption of robotics especially in manufacturing and distribution. Amazon's ambitions for rapid delivery are boosting robotics and automation across the e-commerce industry by prompting competitors to follow suit with their own solutions to increase logistics efficiencies. Robotics startups and autonomous driving companies are finding success in business and enterprise markets, as evidenced by Aurora Innovation's work with Paccar and FedEx on a self-driving truck. Many consumer robotics companies are still trying to do too much in making multi-purpose robots, rather than focusing on doing one thing well, as illustrated by the initial reception to Amazon's Astro home robot. In this week's show we question whether or not we want Amazon's Astro home robot after seeing a few reviews. We then note that Google has introduced gaze as signal to wake up Google Assistant, which is one of the first uses of gaze as a wake-up indicator for the smart home. Then we talk … Continue reading Episode 367: What do you want in a home robot? The post Episode 367: What do you want in a home robot? appeared first on IoT Podcast - Internet of Things.

It's been six months since Amazon first showed off its robot Astro, but so far, it hasn't appeared to have made much of an impression. Early adopters usually like to post often about their new gadgets, but why is the buzz around Astro so lackluster? For more, KCBS Radio news anchor Rebecca Corral spoke with Mark Gurman, Bloomberg tech reporter.

About this time every year, Amazon announces a slew of new products. Some of them are fairly normal: new Echo devices, smart screens, video doorbells. But sometimes the company will roll out something truly bonkers, like a flying home security drone or a Roomba-like robot with an extending periscope camera that wheels around your house. Outlandish or otherwise, the company's output offers a look at where it's headed. And this year, Amazon seems increasingly intent on becoming a home security company. This week on Gadget Lab, WIRED senior associate reviews editor Adrienne So joins us to talk about Amazon's deluge of new products, including that absurd Astro robot. Show Notes: Read Lauren's story about Amazon's Astro robot. Check out everything Amazon announced at its September event. If for some reason you want to buy Amazon's Ring home drone, you'll have to get on the invite list. Here's Adrienne's story about the Amazon Halo fitness tracker that listens to your tone of speech. And here's Lauren's review of the Amazon Dash shelf. Also read Engadget's story about how Amazon is turning into a security company. Recommendations: Adrienne recommends the Back Bay Tempo 30 earbuds. Mike recommends the “Folk Fabrique” playlist on Spotify. Lauren recommends Anne Helen Petersen's column “The Counterintuitive Mechanics of Peloton Addiction” from her Substack newsletter, Culture Study. Adrienne So can be found on Twitter @adriennemso. Amazon's new robot called Astro is designed to track the behavior of everyone in your home to help it perform its surveillance and helper duties, according to leaked internal development documents and video recordings of Astro software development meetings obtained by Motherboard. The system's person recognition system is heavily flawed, according to two sources who worked on the project. The documents, which largely use Astro's internal codename "Vesta" for the device, give extensive insight into the robot's design, Amazon's philosophy, how the device tracks customer behavior as well as flow charts of how it determines who a "stranger" is and whether it should take any sort of "investigation activity" against them.
