In this episode, you'll meet Stacy Westfall from Loudonville, Ohio. Stacy is one of the most beloved trainers and clinicians across disciplines for her knowledge as well as her delightful personality. Horses have always been and continue to be her happy place, and it's where the world makes sense. You'll hear Stacy explain how one of the most humiliating rides of her life led to discovering bridleless riding. She later became an overnight household superstar after her bareback and bridleless ride on her special mare, Roxy. She changed career paths at the height of her successful public horse training career because she didn't want to lose an ounce of magic in her relationships with horses. You'll hear Stacy's powerful and unique take on the connection between horse and rider. She'll break things down into the rider's mind, and body, and the horse's mind, and body - with the rider's mind being in the driver's seat. I know you're going to love – and be enlightened by - what Stacy Westfall has to say. Guest Info Stacy Westfall grew up in South China, Maine, was taught to ride by her mother, and got her first pony, named Midnight Misty, at the age of six. Stacy went to college at the University of Findlay in Ohio, where she majored in equestrian studies. At the root of her technique is the principle to "think-like-a-horse”. In 1994, Westfall met her future husband, Jesse Westfall, at the Quarter Horse Congress. They married in 1997. Jesse Westfall is also a reining trainer and a judge for the National Reining Horse Association (NRHA). The couple settled in Mount Gilead, Ohio, have three sons, and run a horse training facility. Westfall gives clinics, trains horses, and competes in reining. In 2003 Stacy won the National Reining Horse Association Freestyle reining competition riding with no bridle, and in 2006, on the black American Quarter Horse, Whizards Baby Doll, aka “Roxy". She won twice while riding bridleless and bareback.

“Now so it was that after three days they found Him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both listening to them and asking them questions.”Luke 2:46Jesus was 12 years old and He was sitting in the midst of the teachers of the word of God. You and I need to spend time in good company. Jesus was only 12 years old and He was already spending time with the men of God. So much so that His mom and dad couldn't even find him. Now, remember bad company corrupts but good company builds up good character. We need to spend time with positive people who have got a vision, who are going somewhere, who are full of life and who are full of the love of God. You will never find an eagle flying with a flock of turkeys! That British prime minister, Lloyd George said once, “Education without Christ makes clever little devils.”Remember, it is the company that you keep. On the farm we breed the famous American Quarter Horse which specializes in working with cattle. The Association in South Africa often imports horse trainers from the USA, where the Quarter Horse originates from, to teach our men and women the fine art of herding and cutting cattle on horseback. So we bring in the best because we want to learn from the best. What is it that you are requiring from your children today? Do you want them to grow up as wholesome godly Christians? Well, then you need to make sure that they are learning godly principles at an early age. The school that they attend must be a school that believes in the ethos of Jesus Christ. Their friends, the company they keep, must be young people who love God. Their role models are most important - They must look up to people who are serving Jesus Christ in every aspect of society.Today, spend time with those who love the Lord Jesus Christ and you will find peace, hope and the love of God growing in your heart.Have a wonderful day and God bless you!

Justin Morgan DID have a horse.  And it was a beauty.  One of the quintesenntially American breeds, the Morgan horse sprang from the loins of a stallion named Figure, a.k.a. Justin Morgan(‘s) Horse.  And that was not the only Spring that Sprung, as anything that trots or drives in North America probably can thank Mr. Morgan, piano teacher and blacksmith on-the-side for participating in the cancellation of debt through livestock trading, leading to a subsequent horse breeding career (for Figure, not Justin, mind you).  Standardbred, American Quarter Horse, and Tennessee Walking Horses have all been influenced by Figure, not to mention the Hackney in jolly old England.  This little horse was cleanly-built muscle, but could pull all day and still not seem tired.  Logging?  Check.  Racing?  Check.  Trotting?  Check.  And boy, did those genes carry forward, for both temperament and looks.  Today is Part 2 of the Morgan Horse Story.  Well, Part 2 of what we now know might be 427 parts, but we'll save those for future podcasts.  We won't go down the lineage rabbit hole today, but will take a few minutes to talk about one line:  The Government Morgan.  We visited the historic barn at the UVM Morgan Horse Farm in Weybridge, Vermont, where we spoke with Sarah Fauver and Kimberly Demars about the goals of a Morgan Horse breeding program.  We also stood and admired the absolutely gorgeous Willoughby, in the stall and in the ring.  He patiently took time away from his busy beauty pageant and stud schedule just to meet with us (or we'd like to think so).  Just like a Morgan Horse – a cheerful disposition, no matter what kind of work he has to do.Links:https://www.uvm.edu/cals/morganhorsefarm/staff https://www.uvm.edu/cals/news/breed-apart https://www.uvm.edu/cals/news/historic-uvm-morgan-horse-farm-announces-new-leadership-and-new-opportunities https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/6690/justin_morgan http://afs.okstate.edu/breeds/horses/morgan/index.html/ https://www.storey.com/ https://livestockconservancy.org/index.php/heritage/internal/morgan https://www.uvm.edu/cals/morganhorsefarm/historySupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/agriCulturePodcast)

Clinton Anderson of Downunder Horsemanship Rebroadcast I began following Clinton Anderson and Downunder Horsemanship before he titled his program the Method.  It was 2005, I was 51 and was helping my wife get through a tough time with her horse.  I had never owned a horse of my own, but the techniques I learned through the DVD programs gave me the confidence to get my first horse.  Truth be told, I owned a stick and string, halter, and Gaining Respect and Control on the Ground, before I even began looking for my first horse. Because I'm a bit on the frugal side, I volunteered for and work at three Walkabout Tours.  One of them was the first Tour-cation event in Las Vegas.  After the last of the work was completed on Sunday night, I couldn't sleep and went down to the casino at the South Point.  Clinton came in later with a few friends at sat down to play Blackjack.  Moving quickly to his table, I had the best time losing $60 as Clinton kept the dealer, other players, and even the pit boss smiling.  (Well, I don't believe pit bosses are allowed to smile.) Later, I would document my progress with my American Quarter Horse, Jessie on our YouTube Channel and generate over a half a million views! You just can't say no to Larri Jo! Abigail and Kate interviewed Larri Jo Starkey, Senior Editor of the American Quarter Horse Association's flagship publication – The American Quarter Horse Journal. In this episode, Larri Jo shares what she looks for in a freelancer, her thoughts on the importance of a story's quality before edits, the difference between a single-story gig and a regular contributor, the helpfulness of developing an expertise as a writer, AQHA's policies on hiring freelance writers, the dynamics of an association magazine versus an independent publication, the best way to pitch to AQHA, faux pas to avoid as a freelancer, and advice on how to make yourself indispensable as a freelancer. You won't want to miss this episode—there are so many gold nuggets! Contact Larri Jo at: lstarkey@aqha.org. You can also find her chronicling her adventures at twitter.com/larrijo Here are just a few of the valuable insights shared by Larri Jo: Larri Jo learned during her time as an obituary writer for a newspaper that your goal as a writer is to be able to distill your story down to a five-word sentence. The angels sing when a freelancer delivers content packaged with a bow: story written in AP style requiring minimal edits, photos, cutlines, video, invoice and comp copy addresses. At AQHA Media, former interns have a distinct edge because they've been trained to write to the association's specifications. Abigail and Kate both did internships with AQHA. Here's more info about those internships . AQHA uses a trusted stable of freelancers, but if a journalist has a story perfect for one of the association's five publications: The American Quarter Horse Journal ,  America's Horse, Performance Horse Journal, Ranch Horse Journal, and Quarter Racing Journal , the company is happy to consider working with someone new. Each of AQHA's publications has a distinct way of highlighting the American Quarter Horse. Learn those angles before pitching a story to Larri Jo. The best way you can set yourself apart as a freelancer is by being a good storyteller. If you send a pitch to Larri Jo, be sure to include pertinent info such as a working title and deck, angle, potential sources, ideas for photography—and how you will acquire images—and graphic treatment. Ways to ensure you don't work with Larri Jo: -       Pester her incessantly about pitches -       Misspelled words, like names, classes and horses -       Tick off their sources -       Unprofessionalism -       Pitching stories that have run in the magazine recently -       Getting mad when your pitch doesn't get used Your best bet if you want to work with AQHA Media is to develop genuine relationships with the editors—whether that's striking up a conversation at AHP or tracking them down at an AQHA show, help them put a face to a name. If you've got a great story and you can write, there could be room for your article. Final advice: 1. Be a professional. Meet deadlines and act maturely on the phone with AQHA to prove you can be trusted with sources. 2. Be a good writer. 3. Be willing to work, to put in the hours and do the research. 4. Make the editor's life better. Listen on iTunes About The Freelance Remuda The Freelance Remuda is a podcast about navigating the equine media frontier.
