Dread River is here! Our first episode in Alabama, and it doesn't disappoint. Dread River was founded by John Cubelic less than a decade ago. With founding partner Jeff (a doctor with Andrews Sports Medicine - the site of more Tommy John surgeries than I'd care to think about), they toured the country to find out what American distilleries were doing in different states. Along the way, they found an identity they wanted to achieve. Back in Alabama, they found a Tuscan-style villa for their building, started a cocktail bar with all in-house ingredients, and started distilling in a state that only legalized it a few years before. This is a hell of a conversation, and it's not over. Halfway through, we realized their new distiller should be part of the technical side, so we hit pause and rescheduled a second half. Thanks to John for coming on and for offering up Dread River for a second episode! ______________________________________________________ Before we jump into the interview just a few quick notes: The first WRP barrel pick is coming! I'm back from Tennessee after picking two barrels - that's right, two! - of Jack Daniel's Barrel Proof Rye. The $5 tier has access to the Patreon-only segment called “Under the Influencer”, where some of your favorite YouTubers/Instagrammers/Podcasters and more join me to talk whiskey, life, and influencing. This tier will also have priority access to upcoming barrel picks. The $25 tier - for people who really want to propel the pod and website forward - will have the same benefits as the $5 tier plus right of first refusal to join me on future barrel picks, access to bottles I'm sent to taste and review, and more. Only 1 spot remains! You can still support for as little as $1 a month if you'd like to stay up to date with these changes and news about what we've got coming up. Robotic Surgery is the movement of medicine. Dr. Jeff Davis of Andrews Sports Medicine believes the repeatability makes robotic surgery a better long-term option for the health of the patient. - iStock Photos Paint me a picture, what does robotic orthopedic surgery look like? Robot-assisted procedures Primarily used for the spine but as we progress more surgeries become an option. Total hip and knees are currently being done. There is imaging to “zero” the joint. Why Robotic Surgery? It is an imageless surgery so it reduces the radiation. The program runs based on preoperative planning. There is a learning curve and it does take a slight bit longer There is more opportunity for error if you do it manually The reproducibility of the surgery is improved How can Athletic Trainers be a part of the change? My MA is an AT with a lot of field experience There is not anything specific about the robot that an AT would benefit. Knowing about it and its advantages as a resource to the community. Do some people choose not to have Robotic surgery? There is some fear of who is controlling the robot, but the surgeon is in control of the robot. One patient would not get into the CT scanner so we could not do the surgery. Share some fun / cool stories Patients that have been in pain for a while have really benefited from the robotic surgery. The more difficult the surgery the better the outcome from the robot. With the robot, you can have a much better idea if previous surgeries will impact the current one. Since we use imaging and a computer plan we can prepare a little better than non-robotic procedures. Robotic Surgery questions from Twitter: Have you noticed a reduction in recovery times or improvements in outcomes? - ATScoop Decreased dislocation rate It is still the same surgery Who gets credit for mistakes? - 2thebrownbear Ultimately it comes down to the surgeon Contact Us Dr. Jeffrey Davis - 205-939-3699

Diana and Stephanie discuss Tommy John surgery, pitch counts and rest days, recommendations for parents to protect their youth players arm, and pitch count apps. Injuries! No one wants them, but just about everyone gets one once in a while. So this week, Katie and Sarah delve into injuries by discussing their own experiences and frustrations with them in the POWER-UP segment. Sarah breaks down her recent bout with plantar fasciitis, including the weird way it recently cropped up, the lessons she has learned after repeat flare-ups, and how she finally beat the pain to get back to running happy. Katie talks about how a stress fracture lead to a surprise celiac disease diagnosis that eventually lead her to building stronger bones and body. We continue the injury conversation in our POWERHOUSE segment, bringing on Dr. Michael K. Ryan, an orthopaedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist at Andrews Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center in Birmingham, Alabama. Not only does Dr. Ryan treats triathlete patients, but he also competed in Olympic distance triathlons, one full Ironman, two half Ironman, and seven marathons. We brought Dr. Ryan on because he fills that elusive role of a doctor who “gets” and can connect with runners and triathletes, and understands that we don't want to just be told to stop running to let an injury heal (as we've been told so many times). Or worse, that we'll never be able to swim, bike, or run again without pain. Thank you to Dr. Ryan for his time and amazing insight!
