Jane, Katherine and Mary Grey were the three sisters who, via their mother, were royal princesses of the house of Tudor. Jane, the eldest, is of course famous as the nine days queen, with her life ending on the executioners scaffold, the stories of her younger sisters are far less well known, despite their prominence at the royal court and the dramas that both women would go through. Today, I am pleased to welcome historian and author Leanda de Lisle onto the show for a discussion all about these three, fascinating sisters. What were their early days like, who did they marry, and why did these marriages result in both sisters spending time in prison?

Leanda Cave joins today's episode of the Endurance Cartel Podcast to talk about the reality of doing high-intensity endurance sports, and how running triathlons with her severe condition taught her a lot about handling the many aspects of human experience.   Leanda is a former British triathlete who was born on March 9, 1978, in Louth, England. She is the 2002 World Triathlon Champion, as well as the 2012 Ironman Triathlon and Ironman 70.3 World Champion, making her the first woman in history to win both championships in the same year. She represented Wales and the United Kingdom at the international level.   Cave won the European Under-23 title in 2001. A year later, she made her international senior debut by winning silver in the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester. She earned another silver medal at the European Championships before going on to win gold and the World Championship in Cancun, Mexico in November 2002. She was nominated for the Welsh Sports Personality of the Year Award in 2002. She was unfortunately injured in 2003 and was unable to defend her world title, although she did appear in the BBC program Superstars.     In today's episode:   (1:02) Our guest Leanda Cave Professional triathlete, coach, and Ultraman enthusiast. (38:08) Javier extracts some wisdom from his experience in triathlons. (40:50) Leanda shares her next projects regarding Ultraman and coaching.   Quotes:   “Sometimes we're not built the same way as other people and we have to accept that things in our bodies break down…There should be a constant revolving door of maintenance where we work on our issues in a way that lets us compete”   “It's hard often for an individual to recognize that they need to train within their personal parameters because most athletes, especially with the mindset that I have, want to do more than they should”   “Knowing your biological data when racing is probably more of a cue than it is anything else. I don't think it's a huge advantage seeing that data, it only gives you a cue to eat or drink water when you need to”   “It's not all about body type. You can be an athlete and be on the bigger side and not fit into this fitness stereotype. You don't have to be a certain body type to be a fantastic athlete”   “When we are kids boys and girls are basically the same, and then adolescence happens and boys become stronger. However, the endurance side never shifts, and as I got older…I did fine in long-distance runs and I could easily keep going when everybody was falling behind me. That's when I knew at a young age that I had more ability in endurance sports than short distance”   “The inspiration is not only in major sports like Baseball and Basketball. In these other small sports, a lot of kids take their role models from them too, and I think that's why I had this opportunity in Australia to find role models in sports that I wanted to and I enjoyed”   “I never gave up, and there were many times when I could have. I just kept going, and it doesn't just apply to sports, it applies to everything. Everything is so fast now and they see the here and now and forget about the process. There is a process to everything and good things take time.”   Links selected from this episode   Ultraman: The Ultraman World Championships is an athletic odyssey of endurance challenges. Covering a total distance of 320 miles (515 kilometres), on the Big Island of Hawaii, it requires that each participant complete a 6.2 mile (10 K) open ocean swim, a 261.4 mile (421 K)  bike ride, and a 52.4 mile (84 K) ultra-marathon run, the distances being determined by the size of the Big Island.   Follow Leanda:   Website Instagram LinkedIn Twitter Facebook Youtube   Follow Javier:   Website Instagram LinkedIn Twitter Facebook Youtube Linktree   Join our Patreon and support The Endurance Cartel Podcast

Leanda is a multi-time world champion, coach, an absolute legend in the sport of triathlon, and most recently, an Ultraman athlete. Leanda placed 2nd overall at Ultraman Canada, beating the first male overall by 11-minutes which means that women claimed the first two podium spots. So very, very cool. Leanda started competing in triathlon in 1993 at the age of 14, eventually leading her to become a Junior Elite in Australia. At age 21, she returned to her home country of Great Britain, where she pursued a professional career in multisport. In the early days of her professional career, she focused on Olympic distance draft-legal racing and, in 2001, became the European Under-23 Olympic Distance Champ. In 2002 she won a silver at the commonwealth games, silver at the European championships, and her first world title in Cancun. Five years later, she moved into long-distance triathlon, winning her second world title at the ITU long-distance world championship. And then, in 2012 became the first woman in history to complete the double when she won the Ironman 70.3 and 140.6 World Championships just five weeks apart. She is one of the greatest athletes to ever compete in the triathlon and BJ, and I have followed her career for a long time. So we are honored that she is sharing the mic with us, and we hope you enjoy the show. In this episode we discuss: - not scared of figuring things out - seeking the path with the most obstacles - singular focus vs having fun & enjoying life - the mental side of Ultraman - tricks to bring the mind back into focus - why pursue Ultraman? - racing for something bigger than yourself - injury is part of the job description as an athlete - cross training for Ultraman - how to train an athlete through injury - being intuitive vs fixated on data - race day is a dance floor - taking life too seriously - passions of being a coach - using training to dial in nutrition to fuel performance - mobility, stability, and strength training - focusing on what you can do, not what you can't do - the approach going into Ultraman World Championships - fueling advice for entering into long-distance triathlons Thank you to all patrons on Patreon for keeping this podcast commercial-free, we are grateful for you. Henrietta Maria, the French Catholic wife of King Charles I of England, Scotland, and Ireland in the 17th Century, was called a “Popish brat of France” by her British subjects, blamed for the English Civil War, and seen as a mannish and heartless mother. The reality is, of course, much more nuanced. Henrietta Maria fiercely loved Charles and their children and fought to protect them in any way she could during a time of upheaval and violence. In this episode we push past the caricature of Henrietta Maria to see the real, complicated, person she was. Joining me in this episode is historian and writer Leanda de Lisle, author of the new book, Henrietta Maria: The Warrior Queen Who Divided a Nation, which will be released in the United States on September 6, 2022. Visiting London can be overwhelming, with the list of must-see locations stretching as high as Big Ben. But my guest today, author Leanda de Lisle, takes us deep into a lesser-known but historically vital London locale: Banqueting House. We talked about how Banqueting House fits into the rich history of London, its famous architect Inigo Jones, and the gorgeous painting by Flemish artist Peter Paul Rubens. And because Leanda is the author of the fantastic book, The White King: Charles I, Traitor, Murderer, Martyr, you know we had to talk about Banqueting House's as an infamous historical site: the execution of Charles I. The origin story of Banqueting House Banqueting House in London is right in among many of the famous London landmarks but is easy to overlook. As Leanda told me, it was built by James I, father of Charles I, in 1619 because he needed a place to host and entertain ambassadors and foreign dignitaries. Charles I was only 19 years old at the time, but only a few years away from becoming king himself. Inigo Jones designed it in the Italian Palladian style, the first of its kind in England, with a striking appearance to greet visitors to England. The building was built of yellowish stone, through it was refaced in the 19th century with the gray stone visitors see today. The Real Royalty of London The construction of such an incredible building came at a fairly turbulent time for the Stuarts and Charles in particular. His mother had died in 1619, the same year Banqueting House was built, and not long after his brother had passed away. His sister had gone abroad to be married, so Charles was left alone in England. And there's an odd dynamic with Charles's father, James, having an intimate relationship with the Duke of Buckingham that was likely homosexual, and the duke trying to get in the good graces of Charles, the heir to the throne. Buckingham actually took on a mentor role for Charles, helping him as he transitioned to adulthood. And that friendship would become massively important when James died, and Charles took the throne. And given what was happening in England at the time, Charles would need to lean on that relationship heavily. The trial of Charles I When Charles ascended to the throne, the Thirty Years War was already raging in Europe. As Leanda says in this episode, the war was really a fight between Catholicism and Protestantism, and the Protestants felt they were losing. Charles had some “quite conservative” ideas about how to reform the Church of England, with an emphasis on ritual. That, along with a testy relationship with his Parliament, set up the climate in which the country and its leaders were divided in their support of Charles, setting up a Civil War. Charles was eventually put on trial for treason—which was ironic at the time because technically treason could only be committed against the king—and as we know, found guilty and sentenced to death. Leanda sets the tragic scene for listeners; from Charles's final meeting with his children to the walk to the scaffolding outside Banqueting House. It's a dramatic story, and one you'll want to hear from the woman who literally wrote the book about it. Banqueting House: The setting for the high drama of Charles's reign Leanda is full of colorful stories about Charles I and the Stuart monarchy, and the dramatic end of Charles's life. I asked her why she set out to write a book about Charles I, and you can hear her light up as she discusses the fascinating characters of the time. We talked about Charles's wife, Henrietta Maria, the Duke of Buckingham and someone she refers to as “the frenemy from Hell.” (You'll have to listen to find out who that is.) The backdrop to all of this, of course, is Banqueting Hall, an underrated tourist destination, but a spot of high drama in English history, which is, of course, saying something.
