On this episode of Discover Lafayette, we visit with Maureen Dugas Foster, founder of Designing Women of Acadiana, a collaborative network that has spent the past decade bringing together women interested in architecture, design, creativity, and community. What began as a simple idea during a challenging personal moment has grown into a vibrant organization that has hosted more than 100 events across Acadiana, connecting creative professionals and curious minds while highlighting the role design plays in our everyday lives. Maureen's inspiration for launching the organization came in 2016 during a time when she found herself unexpectedly unemployed and questioning the direction of her career. Having spent years working in architecture, she felt somewhat isolated in the local professional community. “I felt really alone in the architecture community in Lafayette,” she says. Women represent only about 20 percent of licensed architects nationwide, and she was seeking both connection and encouragement within the profession. Instead of waiting for someone else to create that community, Maureen decided to build one herself. “Thanks to a bottle of wine and courage, one night I made a Facebook page,” she laughs. She set a date for an informal meet-up at Pamplona Tapas Bar in downtown Lafayette, inviting women in architecture and design to gather for drinks and conversation. The response was immediate and surprising. “It was amazing because we had over 20 women show up.” Even today, she admits she still gets a little nervous before each event, but that first evening proved there was real interest in building a supportive creative network in Acadiana. In those early days, Designing Women of Acadiana focused largely on architects and interior designers. Over time, however, the organization evolved as more people expressed interest in participating—even those who didn't work directly in design fields. Maureen began to realize that creativity extends far beyond professional labels. “Everyone's creative,” she says. “It just gets like smacked out of you during regular schooling when you're young.” That philosophy led the group to broaden its mission to welcome creative women of all backgrounds. Today the membership includes professionals across many fields, from artists and entrepreneurs to healthcare professionals and business owners who simply enjoy engaging with creative ideas and spaces. As Maureen explains, sometimes the greatest benefit of attending an event is simply the energy that comes from connecting with others. “Show up if you're interested. You're going to get something out of it, whether it's new connections, deep conversation with some new person, or just energized with creativity.” Over the past ten years, Designing Women of Acadiana has hosted more than 100 gatherings, typically meeting once per month outside of the pandemic years. Events have ranged from architectural tours and home visits to creative workshops, networking socials, and community projects. One of the organization's most popular activities has been home tours featuring architect-designed residences. Early members, including local architect Lisa Bourque, opened the doors of newly completed homes so participants could see contemporary design up close. Homeowners would welcome the group with wine and snacks while sharing the story behind their home's design. For Maureen, those experiences illustrate how architecture can be deeply personal. “For the homeowner to show off this piece of architecture that they spent a lot of time on, it's like you're living in a piece of art that was made just for you.” Beyond residential tours, DWA members have also visited commercial spaces and historic buildings around Acadiana. When Bottle Art Lofts was developed in downtown Lafayette, the group toured the property to explore how historic structures can be transformed for modern use. Maureen notes that good architecture often involves re-imagining existing spaces rather than starting from scratch. “You can take any piece of architecture that's already there and scrape out all the insides and do something new,” she explains. “That's what you use your architect for because they've got the mind to do that.” Education has always been another important goal of the organization. Many events are designed to help people understand the value of thoughtful design, particularly for those outside architecture and construction. Maureen emphasizes that the spaces we inhabit every day, from homes to offices, have a direct impact on our mental and emotional well-being. In addition to tours and educational events, Designing Women of Acadiana has also participated in creative civic initiatives. One memorable project was Lafayette Consolidated Government's Parking Day, an international urban design event where participants temporarily transform parking spaces into miniature parks or gathering areas. DWA created parklets in downtown Lafayette that invited pedestrians to sit, draw, and interact with art installations. Their installations were so well received that they won awards both years they participated. These types of projects highlight another important element of DWA: fostering community connections. Over the years, the organization has collaborated with local businesses, artists, and property owners to create pop-up experiences and events that celebrate Lafayette's evolving cultural landscape. For Maureen personally, the organization has also become a source of mentorship and encouragement. Early in her career she often sought advice from mentors like UL architecture professor Michael McClure, who encouraged her to stay committed to her path even during uncertain times. Looking back, she realizes that Designing Women of Acadiana became the supportive professional network she had once been searching for. “I didn't even realize that's what I was looking for,” she says. “Starting DWA, I empowered myself and then created this community of other women who empowered one another.” Outside of her volunteer work with DWA, Maureen's own career has taken several interesting turns over the years. She earned her degree in architecture at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Aileen Bennett came with me and snapped this photo.“ Today she works in commercial lighting sales with Lighting and Electrical Associates (LEA), collaborating with architects, interior designers, and engineers on building projects. Her role often involves helping teams think carefully about how lighting shapes the experience of a space—from aesthetics to mental health. “Lighting can make or break a space,” she says. “If you go into a place and you're feeling icky, look around—it's probably 80 percent due to the lighting.” In 2026, Designing Women of Acadiana celebrates its 10th anniversary, marking a decade of creativity, friendship, and professional collaboration. The milestone will be celebrated at the group's annual anniversary party on March 26 at Basin Arts, where guests can enjoy art, raffle prizes from local artists and businesses, and interactive experiences designed to showcase the creativity of the community. Membership in DWA remains intentionally accessible. Individual memberships are $75 per year, corporate memberships are $150 for three participants, and student memberships are available for $25. Most monthly events are free or low-cost, making it easy for anyone curious about creativity and design to participate. For those interested in joining or attending an event, the best place to stay connected is through Designing Women of Acadiana's Facebook, Instagram, or LinkedIn pages, where the group regularly posts upcoming gatherings and announcements. As Designing Women of Acadiana enters its second decade, Maureen and her board are continuing to expand the organization's mission to embrace an even broader range of creative voices across Acadiana. The goal remains the same as it was on that first night at Pamplona: create a welcoming space where ideas flourish, friendships form, and creativity is celebrated. “Designing Women of Acadiana is a bold and collaborative network of women shaping the creative and professional landscape of Acadiana,” Maureen says. “Rooted in design and driven by connection, we create curated experiences that cultivate confidence, spark inspiration, and ensure women feel seen in their industries and communities.”

L'expression « patient zéro », aujourd'hui entrée dans le langage courant pour désigner la première personne infectée lors d'une épidémie, est en réalité née d'une simple… erreur de lecture. Une confusion typographique qui, par un étrange hasard, a fini par s'imposer dans le vocabulaire médical, médiatique et populaire du monde entier.L'histoire remonte à 1984, au tout début de l'épidémie de sida. À cette époque, les chercheurs du Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), aux États-Unis, tentaient de comprendre comment le virus — encore mal connu — se transmettait. Dans le cadre d'une vaste enquête épidémiologique, ils analysèrent les cas de plusieurs dizaines d'hommes homosexuels contaminés à travers le pays. Parmi eux figurait Gaëtan Dugas, un steward canadien d'Air Canada, qui voyageait beaucoup et avait eu de nombreux partenaires sexuels.Pour suivre la propagation du virus, les épidémiologistes avaient attribué à chaque patient un code : LA1, LA2, etc., pour ceux de Los Angeles. Dugas, lui, vivait à l'extérieur de la Californie : on le désigna donc comme “Patient O”, pour Out of California. Cette lettre “O” signifiait simplement qu'il n'était pas originaire de cet État. Mais lors de la rédaction du rapport, la majuscule “O” fut confondue avec un zéro : “Patient 0”.Cette petite erreur allait avoir des conséquences énormes. Les journalistes, découvrant ce mystérieux « patient zéro », y virent aussitôt le point de départ du sida, “l'homme qui avait apporté la maladie en Amérique”. Le terme frappa les esprits, car il offrait une image claire et dramatique : celle d'un individu unique à l'origine d'une catastrophe mondiale. Dugas fut injustement stigmatisé, présenté comme un “super-contaminateur”, alors qu'on sait aujourd'hui qu'il n'a ni déclenché ni propagé seul l'épidémie — le VIH circulait déjà aux États-Unis avant ses premiers voyages.Depuis, l'expression « patient zéro » s'est généralisée pour désigner le premier cas connu d'une infection, qu'il s'agisse d'Ebola, du SRAS ou du Covid-19. Pourtant, le vrai sens original de cette formule n'avait rien à voir avec le “premier infecté” : il s'agissait simplement d'un code géographique mal lu.Ainsi, ce terme devenu universel est né d'une erreur de transcription, amplifiée par la soif médiatique d'un récit simple et symbolique. In this week's episode, editor Reine Dugas takes over the podcast to talk to John Hoffman. The Shreveport-native is the new drummer for the band Primus. Les violences scolaires sont un phénomène complexe qui touche aussi bien les élèves que les enseignants, et qui a des conséquences profondes sur le climat scolaire et l'apprentissage. Pour mieux comprendre ces violences et envisager des solutions, il est essentiel d'adopter une approche interdisciplinaire. C'est dans ce cadre que l'on peut aborder l'importance du jeu, qu'il soit physique, numérique ou relationnel, comme un outil permettant de prévenir les conflits et de favoriser l'empathie entre les jeunes.Pour en parler, j'ai rencontré Éric Dugas, chercheur en sciences humaines et sociales. Ses travaux portent sur les violences, les discriminations et l'empathie, et il explore notamment comment la mise en jeu corporelle, à travers le sport ou les jeux entre pairs, peut contribuer à désamorcer les tensions scolaires. Il nous explique également l'impact de l'architecture et des aménagements d'espace sur le climat scolaire.

Pour développer nos compétences, la présence des autres est essentielle. Toutefois, même si nos interlocuteurs sont compétents et bien intentionnés, cela ne garantit pas que leur soutien sera réellement efficace. Le codéveloppement s'avère un outil précieux, car il fournit une structure qui favorise l'apprentissage et assure l'atteinte des objectifs. Non seulement la personne coachée en retire des bénéfices, mais les collègues qui jouent le rôle de coachs en profitent également. Dans l'épisode 69, j'avais déjà abordé ce sujet de manière plus théorique avec Nathalie Sabourin. Cette fois, j'ai voulu expérimenter le codéveloppement en pratique en me plaçant dans la position du coaché lors d'une séance complète avec des collègues consultants-coachs. Mon objectif ? Travailler ma compétence en prospection. Pour structurer cet épisode, nous avons d'abord enregistré une séance de préparation, appelée aussi l'étape 0, avec Nathalie. Ensuite, nous avons réalisé une séance de codéveloppement, animée par Nathalie, où j'ai pris le rôle du coaché aux côtés de trois collègues coachs : Ghislaine Demers, Marie-Michèle Dugas et Julie Lajoie. Dr. Edmond ("Ed") Dugas, Research Coordinator for the Athletic Network at UL – Lafayette, joins Discover Lafayette to discuss his career at UL - Lafayette and his lifelong dedication to athletics at the institution. In 2002, Ed was the driving force behind creation of the Athletic Network ("AN"), which showcases athletes/sports in UL's past. Mike Spears of Firefly Digital developed the website. AN provides an historical and educational clearinghouse of information about Louisiana athletics and the University spanning over 110 years. It also serves as a communications database for former athletes, support groups, faculty, administration and fans. Ed and his son, John Dugas, are volunteers who personally enter the data and take responsibility for accuracy of the site's materials. It is truly a labor of love and devotion to UL - Lafayette sports! Ed is a native of Evergreen LA (located between Bunkie and Cottonport). A graduate of Evergreen High School, Ed had intended to enter the Air Force Academy but his plans were short-circuited by health issues relating to his inner ears. Luckily, the Principal of his Evergreen High School was close friends and the college roommate with SLI (now UL - Lafayette) President Joel Fletcher, who convinced Ed that he should attend college in Lafayette. And as they say....the rest is history. When Ed started college in 1958, UL Lafayette was then known as South Louisiana Institute or "SLI." Its original name was SLII (South Louisiana Industrial Institute). In 1960, the university was renamed to USL, an acronym for University of Southwestern Louisiana, and an endeavor in which Ed was actively engaged. (The university was renamed to University of Louisiana at Lafayette in September 1999. Ed joking says that "We change our name every 39 years." Governor Mike Foster signing legislation renaming USL to University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Ed looks back upon his time at USL with fondness and shares how student workers worked hard, up to 100 hours per month, for the sum of $40 per month, while they still had to pay $16 per month to cover room and board! But the experience was invaluable and Ed taught tennis and coached basketball as he worked with Dave Fisher. Ed went on to graduate from USL in August 1962 and was mentored by USL's late, great basketball coach, Dutch Reinhardt. He earned a Masters and Doctorate in Physical Education and Education Administration. He looks back with admiration of the talented staff he worked with, including Dr. David Fisher, Fred Nelson, Clyde Wolf, Dr. Jim Kennison, and Al Simon. Ed served on the UL faculty in a variety of positions and ranks from 1967 until he retired in 2001. Administratively, he served in the following positions at USL: Coordinator, Men's Physical Education; Coordinator, Graduate Studies for the College of Education; Head, Department of Health and Physical Education; and Director of Student Teaching. He was the first Executive Director of the Louisiana Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. In 1988, Ed was one of three graduates selected as “Outstanding Graduates” from the USL College of Education in their 25th year after their graduation date. In 2001, he was awarded the Professor Emeritus title at UL -Lafayette. As you'll hear during this interview, Ed has been anything but a retiree in the past twenty years. Ed's life has been defined by athletics, both in teaching and reporting on the athletic history of UL – Lafayette through the Athletic Network, which provides a place for former University athletes and fans to connect and join support teams for their favorite sports. After a two-year hiatus, the Athletic Network went live again on December 13, 2023 thanks to a significant donation made to the Athletic Network by Edmond “Bruce”...

2004 - Waldoboro, Maine. In June of 2004, 39-year-old Mark Dugas was stabbed with a kitchen knife in his home by his wife, Amy Dugas in front of her son. Though she claimed the incident happened in self-defense, she was arrested and charged with his murder. Mark's family and friends were determined to bring the truth to light: that Mark's death was the result of escalating domestic violence. As the midcoast Maine community rallied together to bring awareness to a side of domestic violence not often seen, a contentious trial unfolded in the courthouse. In this episode, you'll hear from a member of the jury who said they didn't get the full story during the trial; and what they didn't know had a huge impact on the verdict. 2004 - Waldoboro, Maine. 39-year-old Mark Dugas, a loving father, was stabbed with a kitchen knife in June of 2004, during a heated altercation with his wife, Amy Dugas. He ran to a neighbor for help, but tragically died before first responders arrived. As news of Amy's murder charges spread, Mark's family and friends were determined to bring the truth to light: that Mark's death was the result of escalating domestic violence. The community grappled with the fact that a petite woman like Amy could be the aggressor, triggering a conversation state wide about how we look at relationship violence from all angles. Prosecutors sought to prove this murder was intentional after Mark told Amy that he was leaving her. Amy's defense team said she acted in self-defense.  But the state had its star witness.
