In this weeks episode: we talk Matt's Japan trip - specifically Ghibli theme park and the wonder of a park built on vibes. And then we get into Aonuma's take on game design. Eiji Aonuma is the game director behind much of the Zelda series. He's Miyomoto's protege in many respects. He is a great project manager. But is he creative? Recently he commented on game design, and how he doesn't think it is possible to think "narrative first" because it will limit game hook/loop ideas. Add these comments to some he made in years past and it presents a picture of a man who just isn't that creative. Japan traditionally put gameplay before narrative for most of its videogame history. So, this is mostly just a traditionalist view imo. But it does shed light on why Zelda has been rehashing the same story every game for 30 years or more.

This week we were treated to a gameplay trailer for Tears of the Kingdom, given to us by Aonuma. In this gameplay we got to see one of our first big enemies in TOTK, a construct, this construct drops a zonai charge, therby implying that they're going to have some kind of importance to the overall plot. So today I wanted to take a look at some other robots in the series, namely the Ancient Robots in Skyward Sword, and connect the dots to the point where I think the ancient robots are as good a guess as any as to WHAT these brand new zonai construct enemies could be. Il y a eu un avant et un après Ocarina Of Time. Et chez Nintendo l'après s'appelle Majora's Mask, un projet développé en à peine un an et demi qui reprend à son compte une immense partie des outils et ressources crées pour le jeu de 98. Le twist, c'est d'abord une ambiance beaucoup plus sombre : chaque minute qui passe rapproche Termina d'un destin funeste, que nous devrons prévenir en apaisant les maux qui rongent les différentes régions de ce monde (soit compléter des donjons et battre des boss). Mais c'est aussi une expérimentation autour du concept de boucle temporelle, qu'Aonuma et Koizumi conjuguent brillamment avec la formule Zelda. Malgré des résultats commerciaux mitigés, cette étrange aventure de Link reste totalement unique à l'aune de sa saga et du jeu vidéo en général.
